Sharks Rally to Defeat Maple Leafs 3-2 in Shootout; Win ends San Jose’s 8 game loss streak

The San Jose Sharks won 3-2 in a shootout against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jack Thompson and Tyler Toffoli scored for the Sharks. Toffoli and Fabian Zetterlund scored to win the shootout. Alexandar Georgiev made 25 saves and three in the shootout for the win. John Tavares and Matthew Knies scored for the Maple Leafs, and William Nylander scored in the shootout. Anthony Stolarz made 20 saves and two in the shootout loss.

The win ended an eight-game losing streak and, for the Leafs, it ended a five-game win streak. The Sharks not only won, but came back from a two goal deficit to start the third period. Also to the Sharks’ credit, the two goals they gave up came on the power play. The game was hard won for the Sharks.

John Tavares scored the first goal after a scoreless first period. At 8:28 of the second, Tavares tipped a shot from Mitch Marner on a power play. Assists went to Marner and Nylander.

Matthew Knies made it 2-0 at 19:55 of the second, again on the power play. Knies redirected Auston Matthews’ shot from the goal line. An assist also went to Tavares.

Jack Thompson started the Sharks comeback at 2:23 of the third. Alexander Wennberg sent the puck in from the blue line. The shot went off of the boards behi8nd the net and back up to Thompson for a shot form above the faceoff dot. Assists went to Wennberg and William Eklund.

Tyler Toffoli tied the game at 10:10. Wennberg carried the puck into the zone, around behind the net and then centered it for a waiting Toffoli. An assist also went to Shakir Mukhamadullin.

In the shootout, Georgiev stopped Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and John Tavares. William Nylander scored.

Stolarz stopped Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. Tyler Toffoli and Fabian Zetterlund scored.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday at 4:00 PM PT in Buffalo against the Sabres.

#1 Torben, the Buffalo Sabres Rusmus Dahlin had three points, a goal and two assists that helped edge the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 at the United Center in Chicago. Dahlin was elated after the game saying “we found a way to win. It wasn’t pretty but we found a way to win.”

#2 There seems no stopping the Philadelphia Flyers now they have won five straight games with Sunday’s defeat of the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The current win streak is the longest for the Flyers since they won nine in a row back on Feb 18 to Mar 7, 2020.

#3 The St Louis Blues goaltender Joel Hofer made 30 stops against the Anaheim Ducks in a 3-1 win on Sunday. The Blues had some of the weight of losing lifted off their shoulder they had been outscored in their previous two games 10-2. In their game Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings they lost 5-1.

#4 Alex Nedelijkovic made his return in goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins after suffering a lower body injury turning away 38 shots by the Vegas Golden Knights in a 3-0 win. This was Nedelijkovic’s first start since October 24th after being on the long term injured reserve list. Quite a game for Nedelijkovic after his injury and rehabbing in the AHL to return to the NHL.

#5 William Nylander returned to his native Stockholm and kept his point streak going at 17 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nylander scored and had an assist in the Leafs win over the Minnesota Wild 4-3. “It was pretty special to get the OT winner there.” said Nylander at the 2023 NHL Global Series.

#1 The Vancouver Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said that this is a playoff bound team but Rutherford feels not all the pieces are in place yet. Rutherford said to be a playoff team everything has to go right, the goaltending, special teams, and you can’t get a lot of injuries.

#2 Brad Marchand forward for the Boston Bruins has taken over as team captain, Marchand said that he’s proud to wear the C for the Bruins. Marchand takes over the captaincy for Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. Bergeron retired on July 25th and Chara was team captain from 2014-2020.

#3 Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele had 31 game season and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck are trying to focus on the coming 2023-24 season. Hellebuyck in his ninth season with the Jets this is the last year of his contract. Also Scheifele after this season becomes a unrestricted free agent. How important is it for the Jets to sign these two players?

#4 The Toronto Maple Leafs William Nylander has moved from right wing to center opening training camp on Thursday. Nylander according to Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is a high priority signing. Nylander is in the final season of his six year $41.4 million contract averaging $6.9 million a season.

#5 San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture is listed week to week with a lower body injury. Couture will miss the start of training camp and no doubt he’ll have to sit out some of the pre season games which starts Sep 24th. Couture was injured while training in the off season saying it frustrating and he’ll miss playing with the guys.
