#1 Bruce, what is your take away regarding all the criticism that 49ers quarterback Trey Lance had been receiving about his performance last Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

#2 Which Giant team will show up, the Giants before last night who lost 10-2 on Monday night or the Giants of last night who got some hitting and used four pitchers to get a 7-0 shutout of the Tampa Bay Rays.

#3 Bruce what do you make of the possibilities of the Baltimore Orioles relocating. It sounds preposterous but Orioles managing partner John Angelos said recently that the Orioles would never leave Baltimore but Orioles are looking for prime downtown property and although they would get $600 million for Camden Yards improvements Angelos whose wife owns a music entertainment company in Nashville makes the idea of moving all the more interesting.

#4 Bruce the Pac 12 reportedly will incur 11 teams from the ACC. It was first mentioned the four remaining Pac 12 teams Cal, Stanford, Washington State, and Oregon State would join the ACC but that has been reversed with the ACC planning to not charge 11 schools exit fees and move to the Pac 12.

#1 Jerry since last week’s Colorado Buffaloes announcement regarding leaving the Pac 12, Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has not made any statements regarding the Buffaloes and also with additional departures from Washington and Oregon.

#2 Washington State Cougars team president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun said that while it’s disappointing that up to five teams are leaving there is always a possible positive outcome that could unfold. They both are hopeful over the Pac 12’s deal proposal with Apple.

#3 Teams remaining after four teams that have left, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, Kliavkoff will have to do some quick work after this season in getting other schools to join the conference.

#4 In terms of how this works for the Cal the school you cover their alumnus and donors have to be concerned that they no longer will get to see the rival teams especially USC and UCLA.

#5 One interesting note is that Oregon and Washington will be entering the Big Ten on a reduced payout while USC and UCLA will get more than $60 million each for media rights. That’s the rewards of being in the second media market.

#6 Jerry you had a chance to cover two Stanford Cardinal appearances in the Rose Bowl how does this break up of the Pac 12 effect the Rose Bowl tradition.

#1 Jerry, the Cardinal (8-3) are coming off a convincing win over the Washington State Cougars 75-60. The Cardinal’s Oscar da Silva continues his offensive success scoring 27 and 13 boards to lead to the Cardinal in the Jan 9th game.

#2 Jerry, 17 of da Silva’s 27 points came in the second half and for the Cougars defense da Silva was difficult to contain.

#3 The Cardinal had four players in double figures last Saturday including da Silva finishing second in scoring was forward Ziaire Williams whose been averaging in double figures at 11 points per game.

#4 Stanford improved it’s record to 4-1 in the Pac 12 and have won three consecutive games of those four wins their last three recent wins have come against Washington State(9-2) , Washington (1-9) and Oregon (8-1).

#5 This afternoon at 2:00pm at Utah the Cardinal face the Utah Utes (5-5). The Utes in years past had a reputation for having big men for their team success but this season their record shows that they’ve played around .500 ball. The Utes have lost four of their last five games and played on Wednesday against Utah Valley to get back in the win column and face today Stanford today with the home floor advantage.

#1 Jerry how important was it that Stanford (19-9) was coming off two wins over the Washington schools and then facing a team they had trouble with the last time they met in the Utah Utes (15-3) and got the victory 70-62.

#2 Like your headline read last night the Cardinal led from wire to wire in this one and never looked back it looked like the Cardinal executed on defense to hold the Utes back just enough to get a eight point win.

#3 In the second half the Utes fought right back outscoring the Cardinal 40-36 and it was just a margin of error that could have cost the Cardinal in that second half

#4 Head coach Jerod Haase said the game was not a thing of beauty but the Cardinal hung on just enough to win it

#5 It doesn’t get any easier as the Cardinal host the Colorado Buffaloes (21-7) Sunday night at Maples Jerry tell us how you see this match up.

Cougars use big second half to blow away Cardinal, 49-22

Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon threw for 520 yards and five touchdowns on Saturday, leading the Cougars to a 49-22 Pac-12 football win over Stanford at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash.

The Cougars (5-5 overall, 2-5 Pac-12) had a 19-0 lead in the first half before Stanford could respond. Gordon threw two touchdown passes to Easop Winston Jr. and another to Davontavean Martin.

Stanford’s Davis Mills, who had an impressive passing game himself, rallied the Cardinal (4-6 overall, 3-5 Pac-12) to within 19-14 in the second quarter with touchdown passes of 28 yards to Simi Fehoko and 23 yards to Michael Wilson.

Blake Mazza, who missed two early PAT kicks, booted a 35-yard field goal to give WSU a 22-14 halftime lead.

Mazza kicked a 38-yard field goal at 6:35 of the third quarter, giving the Cougars an 11-point lead. But Stanford pulled to within 25-22 just over two minutes later when Mills connected with Fehoko on a 10-yard scoring pass. Cameron Scott added a 2-point conversion run.

That’s as close as the Cardinal would get. At 3:29 of the third quarter, Gordon’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Arconado ignited a 24-point run to pull away.

In the fourth quarter, a Mazza 35-yard field goal, Gordon’s TD pass to Max Borghi — his fifth of the day — and Borghi’s 4-yard touchdown run completed WSU’s scoring.

Gordon completed 44 of 60 passes with one interception and was sacked twice. Mills threw 50 times, completing 33 for 504 yards and three touchdowns with two picks and two sacks.

Stanford’s running game was nearly nonexistent, with 16 net rushing yards. Borghi ran 15 times for 111 yards, leading WSU.

Connor Wedington led Cardinal pass receivers with eight catches for 119 yards. Wilson caught five passes for 114 yards. Fehoko had 92 receiving yards on three receptions, and Colby Parkinson caught five passes for 80 yards.

Arconado had nine receptions for 148 yards to lead the Cougars. Winston Jr. caught a game-high 11 passes for 107 yards,

The Cardinal return home this Saturday (11/23) to host California for this year’s edition of The Big Game, Kickoff is at 1 p.m. PST.

Cardinal come from behind to upend Cougars 83-60

Thanks to a big night from Dorian Pickens, punctuated by timely shooting, Stanford traveled to Pullman, Wash., and defeated Washington State 79-70 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball.

Pickens bagged a career-high 28 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with 1:16 to play in the second half. Pickens also made 7-of-10 from behind the arc.

Freshman KZ Okpala was next for Stanford with a career-high 21 points and Daejon Davis hit 6-of-7 field goals and finished with 15 points for the Cardinal (9-8 overall, 3-1 Pac-12).

Malachi Flynn led WSU (8-8, 0-4) with 24 points, including seven 3s. Milan Acquaah was next for the Cougars with 10 points, and Drick Bernstine added eight points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Robert Franks, who came into the game leading WSU with 17.3 points per game, was held to eight points while committing six of the Cougars’ 22 turnovers.

With the Cougars leading 55-47, Washington State’s Kwinton Hinson committed a hard foul on Stanford’s Reid Travis, and the players had to be separated. From that point, the Cardinal roared to a nearly 10-minute, 21-3 run, taking a 68-58 lead with 6:26 remaining.

The Cougars pulled to within three points twice, but Pickens hit a pair of 3-pointers that helped Stanford hold on for its third straight win.

Stanford, which rallied for victories after being down 13 at UCLA and down 15 against USC, trailed Washington State 45-38 at the half.

A game official collided with a Cougars player in the second half, was injured, and had to leave the game.

The Cardinal travel to Oregon to face the Ducks on Sunday at 5:00 pm PT.

Cardinal bounce back with Pac-12 win at WSU, 78-66

Stanford earned a split of its Pac-12 road visit to the state of Washington Saturday, as the Cardinal defeated Washington State 78-66 at Pullman.

Daejon Davis led the Cardinal (9-9 overall, 2-4 Pac-12) with 15 points and six assists. Oscar Da Silva added 12 points and five rebounds, and Josh Sharma contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

WSU (8-10, 1-4) was led by CJ Elleby with 18 points and eight rebounds, with Ahmed Ali hitting 4-of-5 3-point field goal shooting, finishing with 14 points.

The Cardinal asserted themselves with a 3-minute, 13-2 first-half run that helped overcome an eight-point deficit and take a 19-16 lead. Marvin Cannon hit a 3-pointer, Jeff Pollard made a couple of inside layups, and from that point, the Cougars went scoreless over the next 3:09.

During that stretch, the Cardinal went on a 14-2 run. Though Washington State finished the first half with a 7-0 run, the Cardinal led 39-35 at halftime.

Though Stanford opened the second half with an 8-4 run, WSU answered with seven straight points in 32 seconds, closing the Cougars’ deficit to 47-46.

The Cardinal responded with three 3’s by Da Silva, Sheffield and Davis for a 9-2 run, giving Stanford a 58-46 lead at the 12-minute mark.

With 2:30 to play, the Cougars cut Stanford’s lead to 69-64 on a pair of Robert Franks free throws. But after WSU lost a possible defensive rebound out of bounds, a dunk by Willis sparked a 6-0 run over the final 55 seconds.

For Stanford, it was a much-needed conference win after being hammered by Washington on Thursday. The Cardinal return home on Thursday to host Utah. Game time set for 6:00 PM PST.

What can we learn about SJSU following Pac-12 laugher against WSU?

SAN JOSE, Calif. — As you should already know, the San Jose State Spartans had a rough road test against the Washington State Cougars, who blanked the visiting team 31-0 inside Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash.

SJSU, however, may endure a more severe beating this Saturday, September 15 by the No. 20 Oregon Ducks. This will be yet another Pac-12 opponent for the Spartans. The Spartans have already suffered a loss to the Cougars. Plus the Ducks come into Saturday’s game 2-0 with wins over the Portland State Vikings and Bowling Green Falcons. The Spartans enter Saturday’s game with an opposite record of 0-2.

I know I’ve predicted that SJSU will win five games this season, but there’s only so many losses the Spartans could suffer before deciding not to give a darn. Last year’s 2-11 (1-7 MW) record can speak for itself, but it’s 2018 and the Spartans must get at least three wins or else. I spoke to some Spartan fans and all of them told me the offense has to do something this coming Saturday.

So what can we learn about SJSU following their Pac-12 laugher against WSU? Scroll down for the latest with Spartans head coach Brent Brennan.

What can you say about the Spartans’ vanishing offense?
“Well, I hope I could make it un-vanish,” Brennan said. “That was us playing a group in Washington State. They did a great job mixing up the pressure. They did a great job mixing up the movement with the offensive line and the defensive line. Their moves gave us problems all day that gave us some penalties. … I think we’re working hard to put the finishes touches on the offensive line. … Hopefully, this will give us a better chance if we continue to go up from here.”

The Spartans won the turnover battle, came up with three interceptions and only gave the ball away once on a fourth-quarter interception. What else did they need in order to win?
“Well, I think we need to continue to re-define what our effort looks like on both sides of the football,” Brennan said. “I thought the thing that needs to make another really important push for us is just our effectiveness on third down. That has to change. And then we got to find a way to run around the football. That has been hit-or-miss, as we certainly struggled with that a week ago. But we need to find a way to move the football, and if we don’t, it’s going to be a long day.”

The Spartans’ offensive line had a rough night with penalties and pass protection at Washington State. Will Montel Aaron get help on the offense against Oregon?
“Well, I sure hope he does,” Brennan said. “That’s why we practice. Obviously, there were some things we weren’t getting. Washington State did a nice job making it hard on our o-line. … I really believe in coach (Kevin) McGiven and coach (Joe) Bernardi. Bernardi does a great job and he’s going to get those guys running. … If they continue to play together and continue to get some chemistry when they’re up there, I think we’ll get results.”

Three takeaways from SJSU at Washington State

In case you missed it, the San Jose State Spartans were shutout by the Washington Cougars 31-0. Okay, you didn’t miss much, unless if you were a Cougar fan. But seriously, the Spartan fans deserve better; and it doesn’t even have to be a pretty Cinderella story. It just has to be more than two wins this season.

3. Vanishing offense
If you follow SJSU, you should already know that the Spartan defense was there. Inside linebacker Jesse Osuna was one of the few bright spots for the Spartans, as he led their defense with 7 tackles and 1 interception at the half.

But where was the Spartan offense? That’s a question that may never receive a concrete answer. The offense was nowhere to be found in the first half and it certainly didn’t show signs of life in the second half. Moreover, quarterback Montel Aaron looked nervous during parts of the game and threw off his back foot countless times. Aaron just didn’t look like he was able to handle the inevitable pressure.

2. Lack of yards from scrimmage
The Spartans had just 109 total yards, as opposed to the Cougars’ 544 total yards. For the Spartans, 9 of those 109 yards were rushing. For the Cougars, 124 of those 544 yards were rushing. Those were major differences among the two teams, and SJSU has nowhere to go but onward.

1. No power of interceptions
The Spartans caught three interceptions, but were unable to capitalize on any of them. Sure, it was awesome freshman linebacker Kyle Harmon came away with an interception for his first career interception and third interception of the game, but the Freedom High School alum was unable to capitalize on it.

SJSU will take on No. 15 Oregon on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00 pm PDT on the Pac-12 Network along with KLIV 1590 AM and KSJS 90.5 FM.

San Jose State gets blanked 31-0 by Washington State

Following a depressing 44-38 loss to the UC Davis Aggies, the San Jose State Spartans were looking to flip the script at Martin Stadium against the Washington State Cougars on Saturday night.

The Spartans traveled to the Pacific Northwest in Blue and Gold gear. According to @SJSUSpartanFB, there was only one thing on the Spartans’ minds Saturday and that was to beat WSU. Most things, if not everything, had to go right for SJSU tonight.

Unfortunately, WSU got on the board first. Tay Martin scored a 15-yard passing touchdown off a throw by Gardner Minshew. Blake Mazza’s PAT kick was good. The Cougars led 7-0 at the 12:55 mark of the first quarter.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, Martin scored his second touchdown of the game–a 36-yard passing touchdown off a throw by Minshew–and Mazza’s PAT kick was good. The Cougars led 14-0 with 5:45 left in the first quarter.

The Cougars continued to get it their way, as Mazza’s 36-yard field goal kick put themselves ahead 17-0 with 5:48 left in the second quarter.

The Cougars got a down-to-the-wire touchdown–a 1-year rushing touchdown by Minshew–and Mazza’s PAT kick was good. WSU took a 24-0 lead to the locker room at the end of the first half. While the Spartans’ offense was nonexistent, the Spartans’ defense was a bright spot, as Jesse Osuna led with 7 tackles and 1 interception at the half.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Cougars capped off the scoring with a late touchdown with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter. James Williams caught a 3-yard passing touchdown off a throw by Minshew and then Mazza worked his magic one last time with a successful PAT kick. The Cougars blanked the Spartans 31-0.

Notes
Prior to the kickoff, the Cougars led the series with the Spartans 7-4-1. These two teams met for the first time since 1996, where the Cougars routed the Spartans 52-16 behind four touchdown passes from Ryan Leaf, who currently works as a program ambassador for the Transcend Recovery Community, a group of sober living homes in Los Angeles, Houston and New York. The Spartans won the previous meeting 20-13 over the Cougars in 1986.

Cougars head coach Mike Leake is in his seventh season at WSU, while Spartans head coach Brent Brennan is just in his second season at SJSU. Despite the wide gap in experience, both head coaches did whatever they could to make things interesting for their respective fanbases.
