Cal Bears guard Lulu Twidale (10) takes the ball up the floor against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Cassell Coliseum at Blacksburg Virginia on Sun Feb 23, 2025 (Cal Bears X photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Tough loss for Cal last Sunday at Virginia Tech a close game 87-84.

#2 The Hokies just wouldn’t bend in that crucial fourth quarter edging out the Golden Bears 23-21 was just a matter of Cal having an off night or the Hokies hit the books on Cal and studied film and were prepared?

#3 How surprising was it that the Bears who had the better record at 22-8 were turned back by a Hokies team that was 18-10. Sometimes those records just don’t matter on any given night in the NCAA.

#4 Morris hard as they tried lets take a look at some of Cal’s top scorers from Sunday’s game Marta Suarez 20 points, Ioanna Krimili 19, and Kayla Williams with 17 points talk about their efforts to try and keep up with the Hokies on Sunday.

#5 Next up for the Cal Bears the Georgia Yellow Jackets who aren’t no slouch at 21-8. The Jackets are eighth and are just one game behind Cal in the ACC for seventh place. Do you see the Bears regrouping and coming after the Jackets at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night which could be a real battle?

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (10-5, 2-2 ACC) ended their 3-game losing streak, while winning their Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) home opener, 70-59, against the Virginia Tech Hokies (6-9, 1-3 ACC), on a Wednesday Evening inside Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal overcame a 12-point deficit, and performed a 23-point turnaround during their 40-minute conference battle versus their new rival Hokies. VA Tech took the lead a little over three minutes into the game, after trailing by two twice.

Virginia Tech not only took the lead, they went on a 14-0 run, amassing their largest advantage of the contest, 12 points. They accomplished that margin midway through the first half. Stanford did chip away at the lead, and managed to get within single digits of the lead.

The Hokies managed to hold onto the lead going into recess, but felt the comeback momentum of the Cardinal. VA Tech led by five at the half, 30-25. They had one player reach double figures, while the home team had none, Senior forward Ben Burham led all players with 12 points, while Stanford’s leader was junior guard Qziyah Sellers with 9 points.

In the second half, the Cardinal made their move, with two 9-0 runs and finally taking the lead in just under five minutes into the final half. The second stanza had two ties and seven lead changes. After the 56-56 tie, Stanford put on the second 9-0 run and pretty much sealed the game.

Virginia Tech only managed to add three more points from that final tie, while the Cardinal put up 14 more tallies. Their defense was also a lot better during the second 20-minute block. VA Tech shot 50$ from 2 and 3 in the first half. Their percentages were 43% & 0% respectively in the second half. They also outrebounded their cross-country visitors 21:11 in the second stanza.

With all of those statistical advantages, VA Tech not only relinquished the lead, but essentially conceded the game. Stanford went on to win the conference contest by 11 points, 70-59.

Three Cardinal hoopers accomplished the 10+ points plateau. Senior forward Maxime Raynaud grabbed 14 rebounds and he and Sellers both led with game high 19 points. Senior guard Jaylen Blakes contributed 17 points and 6 assists to the cause.

As for the Hokies, Burnham finished with a team high 18 points, while his teammates Tobi Lowal chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds and Mylyjael Poteat offered 12 points to his squad.

Stanford will next be in action Saturday, January 11, as they host the Virginia Cavaliers, at 1:00 PM PT on ESPNU. Virginia Tech heads across the Bay to Berkeley to take on Cal on the same date, at 3:00 PM PT on the ACC Network.

Stanford Cardinal quarterback Ashton Daniels (15) runs for a first down against the Clemson Tigers linebacker Barrett Carter (0) and defensive tackle Payton Page (55) at Memorial Stadium in Clemson on Sat Sep 21, 2024 (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (2-2) will play their fifth game of the season against the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3). Stanford in it’s last two games won it’s first game against Syracuse 26-24 and dropped it’s second game against at Clemson by a huge score 40-14.

#2 Clemson right of the gate established themselves taking a 10-0 in the first quarter and you had to ask yourself how concerned was Stanford head coach Troy Taylor at that juncture.

#3 Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik was dominant throwing four touchdowns and the Stanford defense struggled to get some footing to try and even stopo Klubnik.

#4 The Tigers were in double digits in the first, second, and fourth quarters, Klubnik had all day and you had to be watching anyone on the line for Stanford trying get past the Clemson offensive line to even get a glove on Klubnik but Clemson whose playing excellent football right now is getting Klubnik all the time he needs.

#5 Stanford goes back to the drawing board again as the Cardinal host the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3). The Hokies lost a razer close game to the Miami Hurricanes 38-34. Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones was 19-33 for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Stanford needs a big day from quarterback Ashton Daniels can he provide? Kickoff Sat Oct 5 at Stanford Stadium 12:30pm PT.

South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston (4) holds up her piece of the net defeating Maryland in an Elite 8 college basketball game of the NCAA Tournament in Greenville, S.C., Monday, March 27, 2023. (AP News photo)

On the Final Four podcast with Michael R:

#1 Ayliah Boston of the South Carolina Gamecocks (36-0) led with 22 points and ten rebounds and Zia Cooke scored 18 points as the Gamecocks in the second quarter left the Maryland Terrapins (28-7) in the dust to advance to the Final Four with a 86-75 win on Monday night.

#2 South Carolina won for their 36th consecutive game in a row and once again head coach Dawn Staley’s game plan to have Boston and Cooke lead the way proved effective and Terrapins really didn’t have a chance at any offensive comeback.

#3 Michael, most schools who face who go in and face the Gamecocks know that they’re going to have their hands full in the case of the Terrapins did they just plain get beat or did they just lose focus on shutting South Carolina’s game down.

#4 The Virginia Tech Hokies (31-4) also advances to the Final Four with a ten point win over the Ohio State Buckeyes (28-8) in a ten point win Elizabeth Kitley led with 25 points followed up with Georgia Amoore who had 24 points.
