Karlsson Sets Career High in Assists, Sharks Lose 5-3 to Flames; Ninth straight loss for San Jose

The San Jose Sharks lost their ninth consecutive contest Saturday Afternoon, falling to the Calgary Flames 5-3 from Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Erik Karlsson picked up a pair of assists notch a single-season high in assists and Nico Sturm, Logan Couture and Martin Kaut scored, but the lone good news from the Sharks (19-39-15) this weekend was via the signing of college prospect Henry Thrun out of Harvard.

Tyler Toffoli scored twice for the Flames to surpass the 30 goal mark and tie a career high for the Flames (33-26-15) who now sit four points pack of the Winnipeg Jets for the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

Nazem Kadri scored 5:45 into the third period, netting his 23rd of the year, to put Calgary ahead 4-3. Tyler Toffoli added the empty netter with 1:10 left in play for the final score. The Sharks had led 3-2 late in the second period after trailing 2-1 after the first period.

MacKenzie Weegar and Toffoli scored in the first 10 minutes of the first period but Logan Couture’s netfront drive put the Sharks on the board at the 14:25 mark of the period. Karlsson took a pass from Andrew Agozzino and drove down the right wing, pulling Jacob Markstrom to the post before feathering a pass to a crashing Couture for a deflection goal, his 25th score of the year. Karlsson picked up his 67th assist, a single-season career high on the play.

Nico Sturm tied the game 4:52 into the second period, backhanding a Noah Gregor shot pass by Markstrom for his 14th goal of the year. Karlsson assisted on the goal as well, his 90th point of the year with nine games left to play. Martin Kaut added his third goal of the year and second with the Sharks since coming over at the trade deadline just 22 seconds later.

The Flames responded at the 5:39 mark of the period, tying the game just 25 seconds after the Kaut goal. Trevor Lewis intercepted a failed Sharks clear and passed it to Walker Deuhr, open to Kaapo Kahkonen’s right on the far post. Deuhr ripped it home for his fifth goal of the season. Kahkonen made 25 saves on 29 shots in the Sharks net.

The Sharks return home Tuesday night looking to snap their losing skid. They’ll face the Winnipeg Jets, the team directly above the Calgary Flames in the standings. After that, the Vegas Golden Knights await a Thursday night tilt at home for the Sharks. The possibility that the loss streak will be at 11 by the time the Sharks face the Coyotes in Glendale on Saturday remains real given the quality of opponents ahead.

Sharks Fold Late in Sin City, Slip to Vegas 2-1

Thursday night’s 2-1 loss against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena could be representative of the San Jose Sharks season as a whole. Get severly outshot but still hold the lead for a time; check. Punch up against a superior class team for a majority of the game; check.

The Sharks lead into the third period but give up the advantage late; check. The only thing missing for San Jose (17-28-11) was an Erik Karlsson point or two (or three or four as this season has gone).

Alexander Barabanov scored his tenth goal of the year and Kaapo Kähkönen played brilliantly once again, making 36 saves on 38 shots but a Vegas (33-18-4) goal tied the game early in the third period and finished off the Sharks on a William Carrier goal with 18 seconds left in regulation to pick up their fourth consecutive win.

The Sharks were outshot 38-26, thanks largely to seven Golden Knights power plays, but killed off all the opportunities and survived a 14-4 first period shot differential to lead the Pacific Division leaders after 40 minutes.

The game-winner came on an offensive faceoff win for the Golden Knights and was a result of Matt Benning and Nick Bonino both getting tied up with Nicolas Roy in the slot.

Two defenders on one man allowed Carrier to sneak into the far post unmarked. Chandler Stephenson was able to make the connection and Carrier was able to hammer home the tap-in for his 15th of the year. Bonino drew an abuse of officials misconduct for arguing Roy’s entanglement.

Vegas tied the game on another Sharks miscue after Tomas Hertl wiped out in the offensive zone, with Jack Eichel spring Paul Cotter on a two-on-one. He elected to shoot rather than pass through Karlsson, beating Kähkönen from the face-off dot 6:22 into the third. Cotter has goals in three-straight.

Barabanov stayed hot for the Sharks, picking up his eight point in six games when he scores on the rebound with 2:56 left in the second period. His tenth goal of the year came off a Marc-Edouard Vlasic shot, with Logan Couture picking up the secondary assist. Kähkönen has allowed just eight goals over his last four starts.

The Sharks return home Saturday night to face the Buffalo Sabres. It kicks off a seven-game homestand filled with teams struggling to make the playoffs or fully entrenched in the Connor Bedard sweepstakes, a welcome sight after the grueling road trip of late January and early February.

The San Jose Sharks embarked on a tough four-game road trip that realistically could have resulted in four losses given how the season started. Instead, San Jose is on a three-game winning streak, having beaten stout competition in Dallas, Minnesota and their latest triumph, a 5-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights

Luke Kunin picked up his 100th career NHL point, Timo Meier scored the game-winner on the power play and James Reimer made 24 saves to lead San Jose (6-9-3) past the Pacific Division Leaders after trailing 2-1 after two periods. Erik Karlsson had a pair of assists, Logan Couture had a goal and an assist and Matt Nieto scored his second goal of the year.

Jack Eichel scored his 10th goal of the season for Vegas and Jonathan Marchessault lit the lamp in the loss for Vegas (13-4-0). The Sharks went 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off all 3 Golden Knights power plays.

Nieto tied the game 2-2 1:03 into the third when four Vegas skaters all seemed to be deked out by Alexander Barabanov below the goal line. They expected Barabanov to rim the puck around, opening the slot for Nieto for an easy unmarked goal. Timo Meier gave the Sharks the late lead on the power play at the 17:12 mark, his 8th goal of the year.

The Sharks had just killed off a high-sticking minor at the 14:10 mark before Reilly Smith was sent off for tripping. Couture, who assisted on the Meier goal, also scored an empty netter. Mario Ferraro scored the second empty-netter for the blow out win.

Vegas got on the board first, with Jack Eichel continue his superstar turn in 2022. He was wide open for a cross-crease pass with just 4 seconds left in the first period to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead. The goal was a result of a turnover from Nick Cicek who was making his NHL debut with Radim Simek out with an upper body injury.

Kunin scored his milestone goal 8:05 into the 2nd period to tie the game 1-1 after picking up a Karlsson rebound and ripping a shot home. The play was kept alive by Nico Sturm’s forechecking effort to force a Vegas gaffe, good for a secondary assist.

Marchessault beat Reimer with 4:07 left in the period for a 2-1 lead, but he’d be stellar otherwise. After entering the season in a goalie share system, Reimer has emerged as the team’s starter, manning the pipes for all three wins.

The Sharks return home 6 points richer to welcome the emerging Detroit Red Wings Thursday night. After that, they’ll welcome the New York Rangers Saturday and the Ottawa Senators Monday in a three-game homestand.

Historic night for Kessel as Golden Knights upend Sharks 4-2

Vegas’ Phil Kessel scored his first goal of the season while establishing an NHL record for durability on Tuesday, as the Golden Knights defeated San Jose 4-2 at SAP Center.

The NHL Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights improved to 6-2, while San Jose is in sixth place in the Pacific with a 2-7 mark.

Kessel – who broke in with the Boston Bruins in 2006 and also played for Toronto, Pittsburgh and Arizona – has played in 990 straight games, breaking the old record held by Keith Yandle. He hasn’t missed a game since 2009, playing 12 consecutive seasons without missing a contest.

Kessel’s goal, the 400th of his career, came at 15:51 of the first period, assisted by Brett Howden.

San Jose came back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead in the second period. Nico Sturm’s fourth goal of the season at 5:53 was the equalizer, and Matt Nieto scored his first goal of the season at 19:25, assisted by Tomas Hertl.

55 seconds into the third period, Vegas tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Shea Theodore. William Karlsson’s third goal of the year put the Golden Knights ahead 3-2 at 13:13. Mark Stone tacked on the fourth Vegas goal at 14:15.

Only three penalties were called in the game – one against Sturm for interference at 15:14 of the second period, and two against Vegas in the third period.

James Reimer stopped 27 of 31 shots for San Jose, while the Golden Knights’ netminder Adin Hill faced 31 shots, stopping 29.

The Sharks host Toronto on Thursday, with a 7:30 p.m. opening faceoff.

#1 Charanbir, to get this show started a 5.1 earthquake shook the South Bay 11:42 am followed by a 3.1 shaker just four minutes later at 11:46 am despite the shaking Sharks fans weren’t intimidated as they host the Vegas Golden Knights at SAP Center tonight.

#1 San Jose Sharks (2-6-0) Nick Bonino has been sidelined with an upper body injury and is expected to be out of action for tonight’s game against the Golden Knights (5-2-0).

#2 It will be the second straight game that Bonino will miss but the Sharks say he could be back on Thursday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs at SAP Center.

#3 Charanbir it’s a been a tough go for Bonino he hasn’t scored in seven games for the Sharks and the Sharks are hoping to see him make a strong comeback on offense.

#4 Tonight Charanbir is the first of six throw back sweater nights for the Sharks who will be wearing their California Golden Seals throw back jerseys. The Seals were the Bay Area’s first NHL team from 1966-1976. The Bay didn’t have an NHL team for 15 years until the Sharks came along in 1991.

#5 The Sharks went 2-2 on this last road trip and are 2-6 are hoping to defeat the Golden Knights who defeated the Maple Leafs in their last game on Monday night 3-1. Charanbir how do you see these two teams matching up tonight?

Sharks Win 5-4 in SO Over Vegas, Bordeleau Scores Shoot Out Winner; SJ’s third win in last four games

The San Jose Sharks won a nail-biter in Las Vegas Sunday, winning 5-4 in the shootout. Thomas Hertl, Nick Bonino (2) and Timo Meier scored for San Jose, and Thomas Bordeleau scored the shoot-out winner. James Reimer made 42 saves for the win. Chandler Stephenson, Max Pacioretty, William Carrier and Nicolas Roy scored for Vegas. Logan Thompson made 25 saves in the loss.

Thomas Hertl gave the Sharks a lead by cleaning up a rebound at 11:43 of the first period. Assists went to Alexander Barabanov ands Jaycob Megna.

Chandler Stephenson tied it at 14:23 on a power play, cleaning up a rebound from a Max Pacioretty shot. Assists went to Pacioretty and Alex Pietrangelo.

Pacioretty gave Vegas a 2-1 lead with a shot from the right circle at 7:46 of the second period. An assist went to Shea Theodore.

William Carrier made it 3-1 at 9:59 with a one-timer off a pass from Keegan Kolesar. Assists went to Kolesar and Nicolas Roy.

Nick Bonino cut the lead back down to one at 18:55, redirecting a Jaycob Megna shot. Ab assist also went to Matt Nieto.

Nicolas Roy made it 4-2 for Vegas at 6:35 of the third period with a shot off a William Karlsson pass. Assists went to Karlsson and Shea Theodore.

Nick Bonino scored his second of the night to make it 4-3 at 17:54 with a shot from the point.

Timo Meier tied the game 4-4 with one second left. Brent Burns took and initial shot from the blue line and Couture and Meier took turns trying to knock it into the net.

The game went through a scoreless overtime and into the shootout. The only skater to score was Sharks rookie Thomas Bordeleau, the sixth and final shooter.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday at home against the Anaheim Ducks at 7:30 PM PT.

#1 The Tampa Bay Lightning’s (43-18-6) Ross Colton found the back of the net twice on Friday night in helping the Bolts defeat the Chicago Blackhawks (24-35-10) 5-2 at the Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay. The Lightning’s Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point both scored a goal each.

#2 The Anaheim Ducks (28-30-12) Trevor Zegras helped end the Ducks 11 game loss streak with a sound 5-0 shutout over the Arizona Coyotes (21-42-5) at Gila River Arena in Glendale on Friday night. Zegras scored his 17th goal of the season at 9:42 in the first period. Ducks goalie Anthony Stolarz a shutout saving 22 shots.

#3 The Vegas Golden Knights (38-28-4) Jack Eichel scored twice to help the Knights pick up a three goal win over the Seattle Kraken (21-41-6) 5-2 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

#4 New York Islander (31-27-9) goaltender Semyon Varlamov stopped 27 shots in a 3-0 shutout over the New York Rangers (44-20-9) at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was Varlamov’s second shutout this season and his fourth straight over the Rangers at MSG.

#5 The Buffalo Sabres (25-33-11) Tage Thompson scored two times and was good enough as the Sabers edged the Nashville Predators (39-25-4) at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. The Sabers Peyton Krebs and Victor Olofsson scored a goal each in the Sabers 4-3 win.

His teammates goaltender Robin Lehner, two defencemen Brayden McNabb and Alec Martinez and three forwards Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty, and Reilly Smith are all on the injured list. Inspite of that the Knights snapped a five game losing streak with a win over the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Thursday night.

#5 Matt, just to name a few of the players who are trade deadline as of this morning maybe you could update us, the Vancouver Canucks Brock Boeser, New York Islanders Cal Clutterbuck, Andrew Copp Winnipeg Jets, Jake DeBrusk Boston Bruins, and Marc Andre Fleury Chicago Blackhawks. #1 Len taking a look at the Vegas Golden Knights and their head coach Peter DeBoer and their win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday 3-1. The win was DeBoer’s 500th career win as a head coach and it had to be sweeter to get it against his old team the Sharks.

#2 DeBoer was fired as Sharks head coach Dec 11, 2019 and the Knights hired DeBoer Jan 15, 2020. Looking back on the DeBoer firing did the Sharks fire him prematurely or they made the right decision to let him go at the right time.

#3 DeBoer also got his 499th win over the Sharks on Feb 20th and it was just as good as 500 said DeBoer, “San Jose, that experience is fresh enough with me that that still gets the juices flowing.”

#4 Len, on Sharks goaltender James Reimer after 12 straight games he got a lower body injury against the Knights and is listed as week to week and the Sharks now will have to depend on Adin Hill, Zachary Sawchenko and Alex Stalock how do you see this tandem going into tonight’s game at SAP Center.

#5 Next up for the Sharks the Nashville Predators (30-19-2) who have lost five of their last eight games and lost their last game to the Tampa Bay Lightning last Saturday 3-2. How do you see the Sharks and Predators matching up at SAP Center tonight?

Sharks Lose 3-1 to Golden Knights, Reimer Injured

The San Jose Sharks fell to the Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 in Las Vegas on Tuesday. It was the eleventh loss in row for the Sharks against the Golden Knights. Keegan Kolesar and Reilly Smith scored for Vegas, with two goals from Smith. Robin Lehner made 16 saves for the win. Noah Gregor scored for San Jose. James Reimer made 10 saves in the first period. Zach Sawchenko made 18 saves in the second and third periods.

While admitting that some of the Sharks’ top players may be fatigued after six games in ten days, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner saw few positives in the loss:

“There wasn’t anything I could really say positive about our game tonight. Only thing I’d say is we found a way to keep it a one-goal game for a long time. And that’s an opportunity on the road no matter how you’re playing. You can come up with ten good minutes and find a way to win but we couldn’t muster anything up tonight.”

Sharks forward Andrew Cogliano was equally glum about the team’s lackluster performance: “That’s on us, we know the game plan. The game plan was set in stone, and obviously the game plan against these guys is to try to take away the rush. They’re very good on it and they stretch guys behind you and for whatever reason we didn’t want to do that.”

James Reimer played to the end of the first period but did not return for the second, due to a lower body injury. There were no updates on his status in the post-game.

Keegan Kolesar scored first for Vegas, just 2:16 into the game. Brett Howden carried the puck in, two-on-one with Kolesar. Just before jumping over a prone Brent Burns, he made the cross-ice pass to Kolesar for the shot.

Noah Gregor tied it 1:53 into the second period. Andrew Cogliano, below the goal line, made a pass to Nick Bonino up in the circle, and he found Gregor on the other side of the slot for a quick shot.

Reilly Smith scored his first of the game at 13:56. Jonathan Marchessault brought the puck in and made a quick cross-ice pass to Smith for the shot. Assists went to Marchessault and William Karlsson.

Smith scored his second 4:45 into the third period. Karlsson made a touch-pass off of Marchessault’s shot to get the puck to Smith. It was so quick that it looked like a double deflection from one stick to the other.

The Golden Knights out-shot the Sharks 31-17. They also beat them in the face-off circle, 29-21. There was only one power play in the game, to Vegas. The Sharks penalty kill gave up just two shots.

After the game, Andrew Cogliano explained that he had been out because his infant daughter was hospitalized over the weekend. With her improved and out of the hospital, he was able to return to the team.

Defenseman Erik Karlsson and goaltender Adin Hill may be available to rejoin the team soon.

The Sharks next play on Saturday at 5:00 PM PT in San Jose against the Nashville Predators.
