San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Can Sharks stop the madness? They’ve been losers in nine of their last 10 games; They’re in Edmonton tonight

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 It’s not getting any better and the players in the dressing room knew it before it was over as the Sharks had a 2-1 lead disappear after the Canucks scored three unanswered goals in the third period for a 4-2 win at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

#2 The Sharks looked like they had things under control in the second period with neither team scoring and the Sharks holding a 2-1 lead.

#3 The three unanswered goals in the third period started with the Canucks’ Tanner Pearson, who didn’t waste anytime scoring at 11:18. The Canucks’ second goal was by Markus Granlund at 13:39, and then Troy Stecher came through with a short-handed goal.

#4 How much is this the defense’s fault or goaltender Martin Jones, who bears most of the responsibility for a loss like this?

#5 The Sharks try again in Edmonton and they just might have a shot at getting a win. The Oilers have lost their last four games with recent losses to the Avalanche, Knights, Ducks, and Stars.

Canucks score three in third period, defeat Sharks 4-2

By Pearl Allison Lo

San Jose had a 12-0-1 record versus Vancouver, but the Canucks were able to treat their fans in the home finale with a 4-2 win at Rogers Arena Tuesday.

After a scoreless second period, former Los Angeles Kings player Tanner Pearson had the first goal in the period again. With 8:42 to go, the score was initially waved off with a whistle, but was subsequently overturned. Pete DeBoer then followed the call up with a challenge for goalie interference, but the referee’s decision stood.

One goal later, the Sharks had a 6-4 power play in the final five minutes of the period for the third time, but it was the first time they were down during it. The scenario went quite the opposite way, as Troy Stecher scored at 18:30, shortly after goalie Martin Jones vacated his post.

San Jose fell behind early after Pearson scored at 1:28 of the first.

Kevin Labanc though, was able to tie the game at 5:09. It was his second goal in two games  and marked a six-game point streak

Then Joe Pavelski made a triumphant return, after missing a week’s worth of games which spanned over two weeks. He replied, “felt good to be back with the guys and the game.”

After being stuffed on the left side, he passed behind the net to Joe Thornton, who passed to Tomas Hertl and back to Pavelski, who scored the go-ahead goal on the man advantage at 10:47. Hertl continued a a five-game point streak and Thornton earned his second straight assist, matching him on the all-time assist list with Steve Yzerman (8th place). Thornton commented, “That’s the reason I wear #19. It’s pretty cool.”

San Jose outshot Vancouver 12-6.

In the second, Stecher passed up ice to Loui Eriksson, where Jones robbed him up close.

The Sharks’ Jacob Middleton earned his first NHL penalty, when he was called for tripping at 5:03. It was Middleton’s second game. He last played January 5.

With under five minutes to go in the middle period, Jones went post to post to block Brock Boeser.

San Jose’s Micheal Haley blocked Luke Schenn’s shot with his hand during the opening five minutes of the third and headed to the locker room.

Markus Grandland scored the game-winner at 13:30 off a deflection.

The Sharks had 35 shots on net after just 15 versus the Calgary Flames. San Jose has now killed ten straight penalties.

Despite the turn of events in the game, Thornton expressed optimism, “We got two kind of practice shots at this again and then the real season starts.”

Up Next: The Sharks finish their road regular season against the Edmonton Oilers Thursday at 6 pm.

Sharks Beat Canucks 3-2, Erik Karlsson Returns

By Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Saturday. The win matches Calgary’s Saturday win to keep the Sharks tied in points with the Western Conference leaders to the North. Sharks goals came from Timo Meier, Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski, who happened to be playing on the same line. Martin Jones made 32 saves for the win. Vancouver got goals from Antoine Roussel and Brock Boeser, while Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves in the loss. Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson made his return from injury with an assist and 24:44 time on ice.

Timo Meier put the first goal on the board at 3:45 of the first on a power play. The second power play unit of Meier, Evander Kane, Joe Thornton, Erik Karlsson and Marc-Edouard Vlasic moved the puck well all around the offensive zone for some time before Karlsson found Meier in front of the net. Assists went to Karlsson and Evander Kane.

Antoine Roussel tied it up for Vancouver 57 seconds later, when the Sharks lost track of him in the neutral zone and Alex Biega found him with a good pass. He broke away ahead of the Sharks defense and beat Martin Jones before anyone could catch up with him.

At the end of the first period, the Sharks had scored on one of two power plays, while Vancouver had not scored on either of their power play chances. The shot count was 11-8 for the Sharks and the Sharks had won 52% of the faceoffs.

The score remained 1-1 until Logan Couture scored for the Sharks 11:08 into the second period. the play developed after Erik Karlsson broke up a Canucks rush across the Sharks blue line. After breaking up the pass, he sent the puck the other way for Burns to move it through the neutral zone. He sent it to Pavelski, who got it across the blue line line and handed it off to Couture. Couture carried it to the net, waited for his shot and took it.

That goal was followed up by a fight between Barclay Goodrow and MacEwen at 11:10.

The Canucks out shot the Sharks in the second period 18-6. The Sharks killed almost two penalties, the second being cut short by a high sticking penalty to Vancouver. That 90-second power play for San Jose was the only penalty Vancouver had to kill in the second period. The Sharks faceoff win percentage improved to 58% by the end of the second.

The Canucks tied it up again at 4:31 of the third. Brock Boeser bought the puck out from behind the Sharks net and paused as if to make a pass. This lured Martin Jones into moving forward and away from his post. As no one prevented it, Boeser put the puck between Jones and the post. Assists went to Elias Pettersson and Derrick Pouliot.

The Sharks took the lead back with a goal from Joe Pavelski at 13:06. Timo Meier took a shot as he moved across in front of the net but Markstrom kicked that back out. Pavelski was in Meier’s wake and that rebound came right to him for the shot. Assists went to Meier and Logan Couture.

The Canucks pulled Markstrom for the extra skater with just under two minutes left in regulation. Final score, 3-2 Sharks. The Sharks won the faceoff battle 61% of the time, with Joe Pavelski and Tomas Hertl responsible for most of those.

Marcus Sorensen had to leave the ice for a spell after taking a stick to the face in the final five minutes of the second period. He returned to play for the start of the third period.

The Sharks next play on Monday in San Jose against the visiting Boston Bruins at 7:00 PM PT.

Thornton’s Historic Night Leads Sharks to 7-2 Win

By: Joe Lami and Marko Ukalovic

VANCOUVER, BC–Jumbo Joe Thornton made history on Monday night passing Gordie Howe for ninth all-time in assists notching the 1,050th of his career in Vancouver as part of San Jose’s 7-2 blowout of the Vancouver Canucks.

The record-breaking pass came at 17:30 of the second period, as Thornton led a 2-on-1 breakaway finding Kevin Labanc, who slapped it past rookie goaltender Mike DiPietro making it 6-1. On the play, Jumbo Joe also tied Teemu Selanne for 15th in all-time points in the same game he moved into 15th all-time in games played with 1,540.

“There’s no words to describe being in a dressing room with a guy that’s ahead of Gordie Howe now. It’s pretty crazy, he’s a special player” said Logan Couture.

“When you pass Gordie Howe on any list, I don’t care what list it is, that’s the story of the night. It’s an unbelievable accomplishment, unbelievable career and that’s something that should be celebrated, and our whole group is excited to be here to witness it” added Peter DeBoer.

The pair of Thornton and Labanc has been incredible of late as the two have connected for three of Labanc’s four goals in the last two games.

With the win, the Sharks have swept Western Canada and have extended their win streak to six games jumping into first place in the Pacific Division.

The Sharks dominance of Western Canada continued early, as they quickly went up 3-0 on Vancouver before the Canucks could even get a shot on net halfway through the first period.

Timo Meier welcomed DiPietro to the NHL by scoring on the first shot he would see for his 20th goal of the season. Meier became the fifth Shark to hit 20 goals this season, making San Jose the only team in the NHL to have five 20-goal scorers. In just their 57th game of the year, it’s the fastest San Jose has reached the mark in franchise history.

“Tonight, we knew they were in a tough spot starting [DiPietro] and we wanted to jump on him early. We scored on the first couple of shifts and were in control all night” mentioned Couture.

The Sharks continued their dominance with Evander Kane and Melker Karlsson finding the back of the net before the halfway mark. Kane’s 25th of the season came on a fluttering puck from the right point off the backhand that hit Ben Hutton before going in. Karlsson tipped a Brent Burns wrist shot at 8:48 to make it 3-0.

Vancouver finally got their legs going late in the first and registered their first shot at the 12:24 mark. They made it 3-1 right before the final buzzer thanks to a fantastic play by rookie sensation Elias Pettersson who gained the zone and threw a no-look pass to the top of the right circle finding Bo Horvat for an easy one-timer goal with six seconds remaining in the period. Horvat slapped his 20th of the season to the top right corner of the net.

The Sharks didn’t let the late first period goal come back to bite them as they completely dominated the rest of the way. With no backup available for Vancouver, they continued to pound the puck past the 19-year old with Kane scoring his second, Tomas Hertl, Labanc, and Joe Pavelski all jumping in on the scoring.

Vancouver jumped on the board once again in the third to make it 6-2, as Derek Pulliot slotted his third goal of the season thanks to a beautiful pass from Zack MacEwen, recording his first point in his first NHL game.

Pavelski netted his 30th of the season on a deflection play late in the third to make it 7-2. It’s the fifth time in his career Pavelski has hit 30 goals, as the captain continues his career pace.

Most impressively, the Sharks saw all four lines get on the scoring sheet as they dominated five-on-five. Their powerplay was the one weak spot going 0-for-3 and only generating three shots.

Martin Jones was steady in net for the Sharks stopping 25 of the 27 shots sent his way. He continues to lead all goaltenders since the start of December with a record of 18-5-1 and has allowed two goals or less in ten of his last 15 starts.

San Jose returns home as one of the hottest teams scoring at least five goals in the last three games, including four of the previous six. They host the Washington Capitals on Thursday to kick off a three-game homestand.
