Stanford Cardinal game wrap: Cardinal overtaken by Runnin Rebels 75-74, Sunday Afternoon on the Farm

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (7-2) were unable to halt the visitors’ rebellion, in a 75-74 loss to the University of Nevada – Las Vegas Runnin’ Rebels (4-5) inside the friendly confines of Maples Pavilion.

Senior guard Benny Gealer got the Day Party started with a 3-pointer to open the scoring advantage, in a tightly contested first 20 minutes of play.  The Cardinal never trailed, although there were several (5) ties along the way.  Both teams had significant runs: 5-0 for UNLV and 9-0 for Stanford.

The Cardinal parlayed that 9-0 run to their largest lead of the first half 9; 33-24).  UNLV was not finished with their push, as they performed an additional 7-0 run, putting them within one, (37-36) with less than a minute before recess.  Gealer converted two free throws to extend the lead to three.  However, the Runnin’ Rebels had an answer to that, when sophomore center Emmanuel Stephen ended the half with a dunk, to cut the deficit to a lone point again, 39-38.

Redshirt-junior guard Ryan Argawal led the cardinal with 10 points, while as a team, they shot 41% from the floor and 33% from beyond the arc.  The Runnin’ Rebels shot an impressive 53% from two, and 40% from Threeland.

At the midway point of the game, the Cardinal had a slim 1-point lead clutched by their branches, 39-38.

The second half had a huge momentum shift, as Stephen had consecutive baskets to end the first, and begin the second stanza.  That bucket gave the Runnin’ Rebels their first lead of the game, and a great deal of confidence.

That was the first of nine lead changes for the Golden and Silver States’ battle.  The game was also tied 13 times, to give the crowd of nearly 4,000 a nail-biting finish.

During the second 20 minutes of play, UNLV had a high of  a three point lead, while Stanford was able to go up by as much as four, but they exchanged their advantages like a hot potato.  The three point shooting for both teams was 30%; however, the equivalent fractions were at a different clip.  UNLV was 3/10, while Stanford was 9/30.  Same percentage, but an 18 point difference..  the Runnin’ Rebels made up for that disadvantage from deep, with 20 points (48:28) margin in the paint.

The free throw % was close, as both squads attempted 27 FTs, with Stanford’s 17 being one more than their Sin City opponent.  Unfortunately for the Cardinal one free throw advantage was not enough when the final buzzer sounded.

With several crucial misses from the charity stripe on both sides, the game was in balance throughout the closing minutes.  Clutch layups, jumpers, rebounds, and steals, made the ending so dramatic.

Less than 18 seconds left in regulation, Stanford tied the game at 74, on a Ebuka Okorie FT.  With absolute irony in the Palo Alto air, UNLV was on the free throw line with 3.8 seconds left on the clock.  Senior forward Kimani Hamilton stepped to the line, with all kinds of pressure on his shoulders.  The crowd wanted him to miss for a dual reason.  If he missed both, Stanford would not only have a chance to win in regulation or go to overtime, but they’d also get a food prize.

Whenever an opposing player misses consecutive free throws, the fans win a free hamburger from a popular nearby restaurant.  Hudson really got the audience fired up when he missed the first FTA.  To the dismay of the Cardinal faithful, he converted the second shot, which eventually became the GWFT.

With the Runnin’ Rebels up by one (75-74) with seconds left in the contest, Okorie’s desperation shot came up short, and the team from the entertainment desert got the upset win in the Bay Area.  After 40 minutes of basketball action, UNLV won by the score of 75-74.

Stanford had three players reach double-digits scoring.  Freshman sensation Ebuka Okorie led with 18 points, while Ryan Argawal chipped in 13 points, and Benny Gealer added 11 points.  UNLV presented four double-figure hoopers.

Emmanuel Stephen topped the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn contributed 15 points and 5 rebounds, Kimani Hamilton offered 15 points and 4 rebounds, while Tyrin Jones put up 11 points for the team’s total.

The Cardinal is next in action Saturday, December 13 in the Capital City of the Silicon Valley, as they take on the San Jose State Spartans at 4 PM CT on CBSSN.  UNLV returns to Las Vegas on the same date, to host Tennessee State Tigers at 6:30 PM PT at the Jack Jones Classic.

Spartans fall to Rebels 77-71, Uduje 23 pts

SAN JOSE–Coming into today’s game, the last time the Spartans faced the UNLV Rebels was in Nevada on January 4th where they fell 79 to 73. UNLV is riding a 3 game win streak while San Jose is riding a one game win streak, coming off of an 82-73 win over Wyoming. Both teams will be looking to extend their streaks.

Going into the half down 53-31, there were many aspects that the Spartans could improve on to have a better and a more successful second half. Free throws was a factor in the score difference, UNLV going 5-7 and San Jose State going 0-2. The Rebels excelled in points in the paint, outscoring the Spartans 20-18. Both teams had a problem with ball control, each team with 8 turnovers. SJSU took advantage scoring 12 points in comparison of UNLV’s 4 points.

During the first half, NgaNga led the team in points (7) coming from one three and two FG’s. For the Rebels, Jaden Henley led the way with 12 points coming from one three and four FG’s. Henley also led the team in assists being 3.

The injury bug struck again with Donovan Yap.Jr leaving the first half at 4:37 and not returning.

The second half was a battle. Being down by two, the Spartans had to come out with energy and they did. They went 5-15 from the three point line and had a 35% FG percentage. The Rebels figured out their system going 3-7 from the three point line having a 48% FG percentage.

Josh Uduje led the team in points with 23 points in the second half alone. NgaNga led with assists (3), and also tied with Uduje for rebounds (4). For the Rebels, Jeremiah Cherry led UNLV in the second half with 10 points. Jaden Haley led the team in assists (2) and Jalen Hill led in rebounds (5).

With the win, UNLV has now extended their win streak to 4. “We have a buy weekend and the first thing I told them is to rehab. Get your bodies right.” Said HC Tim Miles

The Spartans will be back in action on March 4th traveling to Colorado State to take on the Rams. Previous to this, these two teams faced off on New Years Eve, falling 72-50 at home.

SJSU MBB extend losing streak, falling 85-78 to Utah State

SAN JOSE–Coming into today’s game, San Jose State was fighting against a losing streak losing their last two, most recently on the road against UNLV, a 79-73 loss at Provident Credit Union Center.

After the 1st half, the Spartans went into the locker room trailing the Aggies 45-36. In the first half, it was all Utah State with a 46.2% 1st FG going 12-26 while San Jose State went 13-34 with a 38.2%. “Ultimately I think our first half defense let us down, it was too easy for Utah State” said HC Tim Miles.

When asked about if there was a message given to the team between halves, Miles put it simply. “It’s not repeatable”, then after chuckling he responded, “I just think we had to commit to playing harder, just effort level, and intensity, and defensive edge. I just think we didn’t have that and I let them have it at halftime”

Coming out of the gates strong, Yap Jr started the second half with a steal, drew a charge, and shot a three. That really fueled the bench and set the tone for how the rest of the game was going to go after going into the locker room down. “That was a big momentum boost for us as a group so you know, we could have that type of energy in the second half every game” said Teammate Josh Uduje.

San Jose State was able to stay in the game because of a career-high night by Donovan Yap Jr. He registered 22 total points, four assists, one steal, and went 6-10 on three pointers, his best offensive game of the season. “Coach was really preaching for us to come out playing harder defensively and I just wanted to set the tone for my team, make sure I was doing what it took to try to come out and win the game.”

Their record now falls to 7-10 but although their record isn’t the best, it doesn’t define the type of team that they are. “I feel like we’re better than the record displays, we’ve had some up and downs throughout the season but I do feel like we should have won some of those games for sure” said Yap Jr.

The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday January 11th traveling to Colorado to take on the Air Force.

#3 This is the first time the Rebels have won 11 games since they joined the FBS Bowl.

The Runnin Rebels of UNLV host the San Jose State Spartans in the final away game of this regular season for the Spartans. Last game San Jose State lost to No. 20 San Diego State. – Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. produced a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead San José State(9-20, 2-14 Mountain West) in a 72-64 loss at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

A low scoring first half, neither team shooting more than 40% from the field. UNLV started the game with a 13-2 run eight minutes in and even though SJSU would bring it close at points in the half, the Spartans couldn’t string together a good enough run to take the lead. UNLV with the lead at halftime 33-18.

Second half it was clear San Jose State couldn’t get a bucket at all. Shooting better than the first half, but not so much better as they only could generate 17-53 from the field. Neither team was hitting well from three, but UNLV shot well enough from the field to hold a commanding lead.

Spartans leading scorer Alvaro Cardenas delivered 17 points to try to get the Spartans to close the gap, but Runnin Rebels Dedan Thomas Jr. led UNLV in points with 18 points and it was a big part of UNLV’s lead here. The clock ran out and it was forsure over at this point as UNLV beat the Spartans 68-50.

Next game for San Jose State is tier final game of the season in San Jose at the Provident Credit Union Event Center and it’s against Utah State, Wednesday night March 6th.

The San Jose State Spartans host UNLV in a conference game. The Spartans won both contests against the Runnin’ Rebels last season, including an overtime win at home and a nine-point victory in Las Vegas.

Tibet Görener scored 11 points in both games while Trey Anderson registered a game-high 19 points in the win on the road. The Spartans couldn’t hold the Runnin Rebels back and went down to defeat 77-65 at Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose.

Starting off hot, the Spartans shot 90% from the field and 100% from three in the first nine minutes and gained a controlling lead early. UNLV closed the gap by shooting proficiently from the field, 24 points in the paint, but were scoreless in the final three minutes of the half which kept SJSU on top. SJSU held the lead at half 39-32.

Tibet Gorener and Alvaro Cardenas both led the Spartans with 10 points and SJSU’s largest lead was 12 points. The Spartans have held leads in the past, but they haven’t had a great track record of holding leads.

The second half was a complete breakdown for the Spartans as they lost the lead to the Rebels halfway through the second half. UNLV went on a 14 of 14 run to end the game and put a dagger in the heart of the Spartans and pop the balloon of energy in the Event Center. UNLV wins 77-65 decisively. Keylan Boone led the Rebels with 18 points and was a huge deciding factor in this game.

The Spartans couldn’t hold this lead and it’s another loss on the season, most importantly another loss in the Mountain West Conference. The next game for SJSU is against Utah State in Utah on January 30th and the Spartans look to regain some momentum going into February.

The San Jose State Spartans won its fifth straight game and earned a shot at the Mountain West Conference title by beating the UNLV Rebels 37-31 in this final week of the season. Thanks to Chevan Cordeiro’s two touchdown passes and Kairee Robinson’s two touchdown rushes the Spartans made a big statement headed into the championship week.

This loss for UNLV leaves a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain West between them SJSU and Boise State and computer rankings will determine which two teams will play in the conference championship game. Updates coming soon.

SJSU took control early in this game and didn’t let up. Cordeiro’s 56 yard passing TD to Sam Olson was the fourth play from scrimmage and grabbed the lead. A UNLV fumble on the following kickoff that Jay’Vion Cole recovered at the 23 yard line set up a Spartans field goal. 10-0 SJSU.

Robinson scored a 25 yard touchdown making it 17-0 Spartans, but UNLV responded with a rushing TD of their own thanks to Jai’Den Thomas that put them within ten points at the end of the first quarter.

Each team hit a field goal in the second quarter making it 20-10 Spartans at halftime. In the third quarter UNLV was able to cut the deficit with another Thomas rushing TD early in the third quarter, but Cordeiro came right back with a toss to Isaac Jernigin, and then another field goal by SJSU made it 30-17 by the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter started with Robinson scoring on a 40 yard touchdown giving the Spartans a three score lead. UNLV in back to back drives was able to score and cut the lead to 37-31 with 1:27 left in the game. Spartans ran the clock down and ended the game with 37-31 and now the rankings have to decide which one the three teams in this tie will play in the conference championship game next week.
