#1 Stanford Cardinal kicker Joshua Karty who booted a come from behind field goal with 6:28 left against the Arizona State Sun Devils to help the Stanford with a come from behind victory 15-14.

#2 Karty did all the scoring for the Cardinal with five field goals kicking two in the first quarter, one in the third and two more in the fourth quarter.

#3 The win snapped a ten game conference losing streak the last time the Cardinal beat a Pac 12 team was against Oregon 31-24 on Oct 2, 2021 much to the relief head coach David Shaw as Stanford picks up their third win of the season.

#4 Michael, coach Shaw says that the Cardinal are finding their groove by playing hard and having the ball bouncing their way. The win was the Cardinal’s second straight win.

#5 The UCLA Bruins (6-1) will be the next opponent for the Cardinal in Los Angeles. The Bruins recently had a six game win streak snapped by the Oregon Ducks (6-1) in a 45-30 loss. Talk about how you see this game Saturday at UCLA for Stanford.

#1 Michael it wasn’t even close last Saturday at the Washington Huskies made work of the Stanford Cardinal (1-2) 40-22 at Husky Stadium in Washington.

#2 Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr 22-37 for 309 yards. Penix didn’t throw for a touchdown but yet there was a lot of offense by the Huskies.

#3 Huskies running back Wayne Taulapapa rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown and Will Nixon with only 4 carries and 21 yards scored one touchdown.

#4 Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee didn’t get much protection getting sacked eight times and the Huskies forced two fumbles was it a matter of McKee just couldn’t get away from the Huskies’ blitz package or the Cardinal offensive line just couldn’t stop the Huskies pass rush?

#1 Cal Bears (9-10) are on a five game skid and fell behind the eight ball in their last game against the Arizona Wildcats (16-2) last Sunday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley in a 96-71 loss.

#2 Cal couldn’t get past Arizona all game long and they pulled it off without one of their top scorers Azuolas Tubelis who was out with a upper body injury. The Wildcats got top scoring from Christian Koloko with 19 points.

#3 The Bears Jordan Shepherd led Cal with 21 points the only Cal player to score in double figures.

#4 Michael, talk about Cal head coach Mark Fox he tries to set the offense as all but Shepherd were in single figures what can coach Fox do to spruce things up on the offense?

#5 Cal opens up a two game Southland series starting on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion against UCLA (14-2). The Bruins are going well as they beat the Wildcats on Tuesday 75-59 in a game that wasn’t even close. The Bruins beat the Bears the last time the two teams met on Jan 8th in an eight point win 60-52.

On the Cal basketball podcast:

#1 Morris from wire to wire the Arizona Wildcats (16-1) were just having their way with the basketball and the Cal Bears (9-10) for a 96-71 win. On offense Benedict Mathurin led the Wildcats in scoring. Mathurin like most of his teammate was getting some nice chances today.

#2 On the Cal defense frustrating getting them to stop the Wildcats inside game hence the kind of success led by Mathurin getting his way on many of his shots.

#3 Morris during the game you mentioned Jordan Shepherd had a tough time getting out of the gate he eventually led Cal in scoring but for most of the game was the only player in double figures.

#4 Morris, talk a little bit about the Cal offense try as hard as they may guys like Andre Kelly and Joel Brown were in single digits for most of the game and Arizona knew about guys like these to shut their game down.

#5 Cal head coach Mark Fox got a pair of technicals and ejected from the game talk about the ejection and how much that impacted Cal’s game.

#6 It’s back to the drawing board for Cal as it’s onto the Southland and the UCLA Bruins (13-2) on Thu Jan 27th at Pauley Pavilion. The last time Cal faced the Bruins in Berkeley on Jan 8th the Bruins were the clear winners 60-52. After getting a dose of the Wildcats on Sunday can Cal come back and make a game of it on Thursday night?

On the Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 The Washington Huskies (7-7) Terrell Brown was well defended by the Cal Bears (9-8) on Wednesday night in the first half of the game and came back scoring 18 of his 21 points in the second half.

#2 Brown led the Huskies in just impressive offense he worked the inside to get shots, worked the boards and wasn’t afraid to take the outside shot.

#3 For the Bears It seemed like anyone that head coach Mark Fox put out on the floor was getting extinguished everyone finished in a single digit except Jordan Shepherd who scored 12 points.

#4 The Huskies led Cal by seven at the half and got the win by 66-54. In both halves of the game the Huskies and Brown just out hustled Cal every step of the way.

#5 Cal will be at it again when they try to get back in the win column against the Washington State Cougars (9-6) at Pullman which could be a very tough place for the Bears to try and snap a three game losing streak.

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:

#1 It wasn’t much of a contest as the Cal Bears (9-7) went down to defeat for the second time to a LA university this time to the UCLA Bruins (10-1) 60-53 a eight point win as the Bruins controlled the offense from wire to wire.

#2 Once again Cal guard Andre Kelly did most of the heavy lifting coming away with 22 points. Kelly executed inside the paint and had a multiple dunk show with one displaying some hang time but regardless Cal came up short.

#3 Morris, knowing what the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins would bring in this week to Haas Pavilion it really wasn’t a surprise for Cal head coach Mark Fox but from what you saw did the Bears leave that best effort out on the floor this week.

#4 The Bruins had two players in double figures with heavy NBA potential guard Tyger Campbell with a team leading 17 points and coming right behind him guard Jaime Jaquez Jr with 14 points to contribute to the Bruins tenth win of the season.

#5 It’s off to Seattle and the Washington Huskies (6-7) in Cal’s next contest. The Huskies have won four of their last eight games and got a six point win over the Utah Utes (8-7) 74-68 on Thu Jan 6 in Utah. Morris after getting a double dose of loses this week the Bears are certainly looking to get back in the win column in their visit to Washington on Wed Jan 12th.

#1 Daniel, the Stanford Cardinal (8-4) playing their last game on Thu Dec 23 at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu get a long lay off. Their game this coming Sun Jan 2 postponed due to Covid 19 protocols with their next game scheduled for Thu Jan 6 at UCLA (8-1).

#2 Daniel, talk about the long lay off is that an advantage for Stanford getting rest between games or a disadvantage becoming rusty and not seeing competitive action?

#3 The Cardinal have been playing great ball they have won five of their last seven games and getting great offensive support from Spencer Jones who scored 25 points in his last game against the Liberty Flames (8-5) on Thu Dec 23 in Honolulu. He was critical because the Cardinal won by just three points.

#4 Daniel, Jones has been passed the ball quite a bit which shows that the Cardinal have confidence in what he can do with it and pretty much lean on Jones to finish the job in front of the basket.

#5 Stanford faces the Bruins (8-1) Thu Jan 6 and the Bruins have lost only one game this season and that was to Gonzaga getting crushed by 20 points 83-63. Otherwise the Bruins have owned everyone else they’ve faced who do you like in Thursday’s game?

Bears close out football season with 24-14 home win over Trojans

California wrapped up its 2021 football season on a winning note Sarturday night at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, as the Golden Bears upended Southern California 24-14, completing the Pac-12 slate for both schools.

The Bears’ offense wasn’t overwhelming, but good enough. Christopher Brooks led the Cal ballcarriers with 41 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns. Chase Garbers completed 18 of 21 passes for 183 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and was sacked three times for 15 yards. Trevon Clark caught five passes for 65 yards, and Kekoa Crawford caught four passes for 22 yards.

Vavae Malepeai was the Trojans’ top rusher with 107 yards on 18 attempts. Quarterback Jaxson Darr completed 17 of 26 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and was sacked once. Michael Jackson III caught six passes for 73 yards, Kyle Ford snared five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, and Tahj Washington caught five passes for 57 tards.

Cal (5-7) opened the scoring late in the first quarter, when Dario Longhetto booted a 27-yard field goal. The Trojans (4-8) took a 7-3 lead at 9:46 of the second quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Darr to Ford.

The Golden Bears surged ahead to stay at 10-7 on Brooks’ 1-yard scoring run at 4:54 of the second quarter. Just 48 seconds later, Cal extended it’s lead with a stroke of luck. After Darwin Barlow gained two yards and fumbled on a 3rd-and-2 from the Bears’ 47, teammate Trey Paster picked up the loose ball and ran 55 yards for a Cal touchdown, giving the Bears a 17-7 halftime lead.

Cal extended its lead to 24-7 at 6:30 of the fourth quarter when Brooks scored his second touchdown of the night, a 2-yard run.

USC cut its deficit to 24-14 on a 30-yard Miller Moss touchdowbn pass to K.D. Nixon with 1:53 remaining in the game.

Dart was knocked out in the third quarter due to an apparent concussion. The loss ended the term of interim coach Donte Williams, who took over after Clay Helton was fired earlier this season. Lincoln Riley was recently hired to get the one-time power back on track.

UCLA blows out Golden Bears 42-14, ends Cal’s bowl hopes

California’s slim hopes of playing postseason football were dashed Saturday night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., when UCLA used a big second half to bury the Golden Bears 42-14.

The Pac-12 Conference loss eliminates the Golden Bears (4-7 overall, 3-5 Pac-12) from bowl eligibility. UCLA (8-4, 6-3) ended its regular season tied with Arizona State for second place in the Pac-12 South. Cal is assured of its second straight losing season, and a losing Pac-12 record for the 12th straight season.

Bruins quarterbaack Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 19 of 28 passes for `64 yards and three touchdowns, while not being intercepted or sacked. He also gained 102 rushing yards on 13 carries. Zach Charbonnet led the Bruin rushing attack with 106 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts.

Charbonnet, Greg Dulcich and Kyle Phillips each caught six passes for UCLA.

Cal signalcaller Chase Garbers had a tough evening, being picked off twice and sacked four times. He finished 16 of 31 for 125 yards and no touchdowns. Christopher Brooks ran 12 times for 61 rushing yards, and Kekoa Crawford and Marcel Dancy each caught five passes for the Golden Bears.

The Bruins gained 282 rushing yards against the top run defense in the conference. Cal was held to 91 total rushing yards.

UCLA opened the scoring with a 41-yard field goal by Nicholas Barr-Mira at 9:47 of the first quarter. The Bruins extended their lead to 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter, when Phillips hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Thompson-Robinson.

The Bears broke through six minutes later, when Brooks scored on a 14-yard run, and, at 7:34 of the second period, Garbers ran in on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, giving Cal a 14-10 lead,

But the Bruins responded with a 64-yard scoring drive that consumed 6 minutes and 29 seconds. With 32 seconds left in the first half, UCLA surged back ahead to stay at 17-14 on Kazmeir Allen’s 8-yard touchdown run.

From there, the Bruins scored 25 unanswered points throughout the second half to blow the game open. Dulcich snared a 29-yard scoring pass from Thompson-Robinson, and Barr-Mira kicked a 46-yard field goal, giving UCLA a 27-14 lead after three quarters.

Early in the fourth quarter, Charbonnet’s 1-yard TD run, and Phillips’ second scoring pass reception from Thompson-Robinson – this time for 4 yards – gave the Bruins a commanding 42-14 lead.

Cal closes out its season next Saturday, when the Bears host Southern California in a game that was postponed from an earlier date due to Cal’s team COVID outbreak. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
