Poole and Wiggins Shine In Warrior Win 119-104

Despite an off night for Stephen Curry Jordan Poole picked up the slack along with teammate Andrew Wiggins. Poole had 33 points and Wiggins turned in 32 for the 119-104 win.

Sunday night the Golden State Warriors (15-2) took on the Toronto Raptors (8-10) at Chase Center. The Warriors returned from a four game road trip in which they went 3-1, the single loss at the hands of the Charlotte Hornets.

They say there is no place like home and Golden State would be in full agreement having won eight games at Chase with a single loss this season. They are looking to continue their winning ways tonight with Curry, Draymond Green, and Otto Porter Jr. all back on board.

Toronto is better on the road so they will looking for another upset after beating the Sacramento Kings 108-89 on Friday night. It will be a treat to watch Toronto’s rookie Scottie Barnes who is without doubt the most impressive newcomer in the league with a 14.9 shooting average and 8.1 rebounds per game. The Warriors cannot get careless with the ball because the Raptors are very good converting turnovers into points.

The Warriors got the quick start that they wanted in this game leading after one quarter 36-24. After two quarters they had eight turnovers, only three of them coming in the second quarter. The half time lead for Golden State was 61-47.

The Warriors were handling Toronto but the Raptors remained just within striking distance in the half. The Raptors bottled up Curry in the half but no Curry, no problem. This team is so deep that if any one player is taken out of the game, there is a whole string of players to pick up the slack.

In the third quarter, the Warriors held onto their double digit lead. Chris Chiozza was having a great game, getting a chance to play considerable minutes shooting 11 points in 12 minutes. After three quarters the Warriors were in control of the game leading 92-77.

The Raptors continued to hang around in the fourth quarter but could never get close. The final was 119-104.

It was an off day for Curry who shot 12 points with two rebounds. Teammates Andrew Wiggins had 32 points and Poole had the high for the game with 33. Off the bench Otto Porter Jr had 15 points.

This is such an amazing roster with the incredible depth that we see every night. When one player struggles there is always the next guy up who will pick up the slack. Everyone of the guys on this roster is capable of helping his team win and we saw that tonight.

The Warriors have a couple of well-earned days off before they are back in action Wednesday taking on the Philadelphia 76ers. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

 On a night when Stephen Curry had the worst shooting night of his illustrious career, the Warriors found a way to withstand Toronto’s furious fourth-quarter comeback to win 106-105.

In every game in which Curry scored 30 or more points, Golden State finished with a win. Curry put just 13 points on the board. The Warriors won the game with great defense and six players scoring in double figures. The bench helped out with 46 points. As the fans around the NBA know, there is more to Curry’s game than scoring. He was credited with six assists, and he pulled down nine rebounds.

The Warriors led for the first three quarters. They won the first quarter 31-24. They led 10-1 to start the game. Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, and Kelly Oubre, Jr. paced the Warrior offense.

The Warriors second unit of Eric Paschall, Brad Wanaker, and Damian Lee helped the Warriors finish the first half leading 61-49. Curry has three points in the first half. Wiggins 11, Wiseman 10, Paschall 8, and Lee 8. Pascal Siakam had 16 for the Raptors. Fred VanVleet 10, and Chris Boucher 10.

The Warriors continued to dominate play in the third quarter. They increased the lead to fifteen 87-72 and appeared to be cruising to a victory. However, in the NBA, teams have to not take things easy in the fourth and final period of play.

Eric Paschall made a bucket to put the Warriors up by seventeen. It was at this point in the game that things went south for the Warriors. Toronto went on a 21 to five-run to make it a one-point game 94-93.

Kelly Oubre connected on a three to give the Warriors some breathing room 97-93. Toronto scored the next five points to go ahead by one 98-97. They hit a three to lead by four 101-97. Curry knocked down a three to make it 101-100. Toronto answered with a bucket to lead 103-100 with 1:45 left.

Baskets by Curry and Kent Bazemore put the Warriors ahead 104-103. Toronto scored to lead 105-104 with 7.6 seconds left. Damian Lee was fouled attempting a three-pointer. Toronto coach Nick Nurse challenged the call. After the review, the referees determined that Lee was fouled before the shot.

He would not get three free throws. Since the Raptors were over the foul limit, Lee was awarded two free throws. He made both to give the Warriors the advantage 106-105 with 4.3 seconds left to play. Toronto got the ball into Pascal Siakam’s hands. His shot at the buzzer failed to go down. The Warriors held on to win 106-105.

Game Notes and stats: With the win, the Warriors improved their season record to 6-4. The Raptors fell to 2-7. 

Draymond Green had his best game of the season. He just missed a triple-double. He kicked in with ten points, nine rebounds, and ten assists. Wiggins had 17, Wiseman 10, Oubre 12, Curry 11, and Eric Paschall 15. For Paschall, it was his eighth game in a row with ten or more points. Damian Lee had 13, Bazemore nine, Wanamaker 7. 

The Warriors bench outscored the Raptors bench 46-25.

Pascal Siakam led the Raptors with 25. Fred VanVleet had 21, Chris Boucher 15, and he was a force on defense with six blocked shots. Kyle Lowrey had 17, 16 of which came in the fourth period. 

The Warriors finish the seven-game home stand against the Indiana Pacers Tuesday night at the Chase Center. The game will start at 7 pm.

San Francisco- The Warriors superstar, Stephen Curry, returned to action after missing 58 games due to a broken hand. His presence on the court electrified the fans.

The Warriors, with the worst record in the NBA, had to play the defending NBA champion Toronto Raptors. Many people around the NBA thought the Raptors would not have a good season as their star player, Kawhi Leonard, left the team to play for the LA Clippers.

Under the tutelage of their coach, Nick Nurse, the Raptors own the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors entered the game with a record of 43-18. Stars such as Serge Ibaka, Kyle Lowry, Norman Powell, and Pascal Siakam are the new nucleus of the Raptors. Neither Marc Gasol or Fred Van Vleet was available to play Thursday night. The W’s Draymond Green and Kevon Looney did not play.

The Raptors entered the game as prohibitive favorites. The Warriors, on the other hand, felt that they could compete with the champs. They had won two of the last three they played, and Curry was back. Head coach Steve Kerr said that Curry would play about 25 to 28 minutes.

The Warriors had a 9-7 lead early in the first quarter.  Curry played for about six minutes and did not score. The Raptors led 18-12 about midway through the period. The Warriors stayed with them for the rest of the period. Eric Paschall, Damion Lee, and Mychal Mulder led the Warriors offense. The quarter finished with Toronto leading 32-27.

In the second quarter, the Raptors increased the lead to 10 39-29. Curry scored his first points of the night when he made a bucket and was fouled on the play. The Raptors, behind Norman Powell’s hit hand, increased the lead to 14 49-35. Curry hit a three-point shot that sent the crowd into delirium. The Warriors clawed their way back.

The Warriors behind Curry and Damion Lee cut the lead to five 56-51. The Raptors went on a 7-0 run, but Andrew Wiggins knocked a three to end the second quarter. The Raptors won the period 30-28 and led the W’s 62-55 at the end of the first 24 minutes of play.  Steph Curry, in his 14 minutes of playing time, recorded 11 points, three rebounds, four assists, and he connected on two three-point shots Damion Lee had 12, Marquese Chriss nine, Eric Paschall eight, and Andrew Wiggins six. Toronto’s Norman Powell knocked down 17 points in the second quarter and finished the half with 23. Kyle Lowry was second with ten.

In the third quarter, The Warriors ambushed the Raptors. Over the past few seasons, the Warriors owned the third quarter. This season, it has been the reverse. Opponents have killed them this year. Thursday night, the Warriors looked like the Warriors of old. They won the quarter 33-27 to finish trailing 89-88, heading into the final stanza.

Damion Lee and Curry led the charge. Curry was making magic for Golden State once again. He made behind-the-back passes to his teammates for scores. He made another three and drove to the basket. The Warriors had the lead 85-83. Toronto regained the lead as Powell knocked down two -three-pointers to put them back in the lead.

In the fourth quarter, it sounded like the days of old at the Oracle Arena. The fans were chanting “Warriors, Warriors.” The Warriors did the best they could, but Toronto started to pull away. The Warriors tied the game at 95.

Toronto forced three straight turnovers, and they increased the lead to five 100-95. The Raptors were leading 111-102 when Curry re-entered the game. The Warriors rallied to close the deficit to two 113-111. The Raptors’ Pascal Siakam scored to make it 115-111.

Curry countered with a bucket to make it 115-113. The fans were chanting MVP, MVP, MVP. The Warriors would not score again. The fans, with 1:34 to play, were on their feet as they gave the Warriors a rousing, standing ovation. It is rare to have fans shaking the house, knowing the team is about to lose. The Raptors scored the last six points of the game to win 121-113.

Game Notes and Stats- With the loss, the Warriors went 14-48.  Curry was on the floor for 27 minutes. He scored 23 points, had seven rebounds, and seven assists. He made three threes in ten tries. Damion Lee had 23 points. five boards, three assists, and he made five threes.

Wiggins tallied 21 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three threes. Marquese Chriss had a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. Eric Paschall finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and eight assists. The Warriors shot 42% from the floor. They connected on 14 threes in 50 attempts. They moved the ball well as they recorded 34 assists. The W’s outrebounded the Raptors 52-39.

Norman Powell had a career-high 37 points to lead the Raptors. Kyle Lowry had 26, Siakam, 15, Og Anunoby 14, Serge Ibaka 13, and Terrence Davis 10. It was the seventh win in a row for Toronto.

The Warriors host the Philadelphia 76ers Saturday night at the Chase Center. The game will start at 5:30 pm.
