That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Shooting kills one just blocks away from A’s new ballpark site; Will Curry and Green seek the highest bidder to sign with? plus more

Authorities work the area near Oakland Police Headquarters precinct in downtown Oakland and Oakland Chinatown just blocks from Jack London Square the site of the Oakland A’s proposed new ballpark after a shooting killing one male. 20 spent bullet casings were found at 8th in Broadway on Mon May 24, 2021. (still photo from NBC Bay Area)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Fans, media, workers, front office staff and players could be concerned regarding the future of moving to downtown Oakland as downtown and Chinatown have seen it’s share of violence just blocks from Howard Terminal where the Oakland A’s hope to build their new ball park. A male was shot over 20 times just a block from Oakland Police headquarters in downtown and no suspects have been arrested or found in the Monday killing.

#2 The Golden State Warriors next move now that their regular season is over is to try and sign both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green during this off season. Amaury do you find it a no brainer for both Green and Curry to sign on with the Warriors or will they wait it out and see who the highest bidder is in the NBA.

#3 Amaury, talk about the hit by injury that A’s Mark Canha sustained getting hit in the elbow which caused swelling on Saturday. Canha made a quick recovery on Monday night with two hit and scoring a run, walked twice with an RBI.

#4 Former St Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa faced his old team at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago. LaRussa recently had been questioned about some of the remarks he made regarding the Sox Yermin Mercedes when he hit a 3-0 pitch for a home run against a position player, LaRussa in another game on May 5th used Liam Hendricks to pinch run at second base during the 10th inning on a double switch during the post game press conference LaRussa said he didn’t know he could have used Jose Abreau as a pinch runner. LaRussa has being under a lot of criticism this month but the White Sox still maintain first place in the AL Central.

#5 Japanese polls show that 60-80% of the public do not want the Summer Olympics to open for at least two months during a pandemic. International Olympics Committee vice president John Coates told a reporter “absolutely yes” that the Olympics will open July 23rd and will “safe and secure.”

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A Revolution in Baseball–  -Beam Me Up Scotty-

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner throws against the Miami Marlins on Tue May 11, 2021, Bumgarner was effected the new rules and no credited with a no hitter after throwing one for seven innings and had to throw for nine innings for an official no hitter (AP News photo)

A Revolution in Baseball–  -Beam Me Up Scotty-

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Six no-hitters in less than two months into the season!! One by Madison Bumgarner in seven innings, but that doesn’t count according to the new rules. Baseball is on a pace for more strikeouts than ever before in history, and a category-5 hurricane of home runs to go along.

Hitting .300 has become a novelty; various experiments in minor leagues are currently taking place. One going-on is moving the pitching mound one foot further from the plate to 61′ 6″. Doubleheaders of seven inning games, a “free” runner at second-base when you go into extra innings, the clock is taking over, baseball wants a faster pace (so they say) and not necessarily shorter games. Everyplace you look, you can see this is not the baseball of your father or grandfather.

For decades, the US government ignored reports of UFO’s, which the Pentagon refers now as unidentified aerial phenomena, are real. Maybe aliens have something to do with all this crazy stuff going in the game of baseball today. Technology collecting and analyzing massive amounts of baseball data. “Beam me up, Scotty”.

Launch Angle, nothing but a vertical angle on a swing that leaves the bat with one and only one purpose, to hit the ball over the fence. Round-trippers getting…boring? Today’s batting averages are 25 points under all-time averages in the history of the game.

The shift is old already. I have seen how many players starting to adjust (a favorite coach word) to the shift, the defense realignment that moves as many players to one side/or the other of the infield. Slowly but surely some hitters are beginning to find how to hit and beat the shift hitting to the weakest part of the infield. That is good news; it makes it more interesting and less robotic. At least that has a human factor, players can still think for themselves and that is good news.

During the first two months of this 2021 season we have already seen enough, to easily predict this year would be the most revolutionary year in the history of baseball, with records that will make your eyeballs pop out the sockets out of your head. Enough to make Abner Doubleday come out of his grave to die again instantly of a massive heart attack.

Disclaimer: I am not against change, when it makes sense and when you try to keep the game as much possible the way it was intended, but too much “tweaking” destroys the integrity of the game. Baseball is a great game, to me there is no other game like it on earth, it makes you think, there is (or used to be) a lot of strategy, one of the most difficult things was for a player to hit a home-run, a strike-out was something that a player would hate, most pitchers wanted to go all the way and not throw the towel when they reach 100 thrown pitches, the bunt was a way to manufacture a run which in many cases is enough for the win, since this is not fútbol/soccer, there are no tied games.

The clock was the only thing you did not have to look at a baseball game, just like in the gambling floors in Las Vegas casino’s there is no clock so you just gamble away, in baseball you enjoy a day at the park with family and friends and time becomes irrelevant.

Stay well and stay tuned.

Miami Marlins Celebrate Cuban Sugar Kings with Uniforms

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Let’s Celebrate!!!! The Miami Marlins are celebrating the Cuban Sugar Kings legacy and the influence of Cuba and baseball in Latin America as they will wear uniforms this coming weekend against the New York Mets at Loan Depot Park their home adjacent to Miami’s “Little Havana”.

The club announced they will also be celebrating Cuba’s Independence from Spain, which took place on May 20, 1902. El 20 de Mayo falls on a Thursday which the Marlins will celebrate this Saturday. About the uniforms, which are a collaboration with Nike and MLB, as Juan Martínez, Director of Events and Promotions from the Miami Marlins told me; “we are all very proud of taking the field with them this weekend and beyond for years to come”.

The Marlins will also wear the uniform at least once per month for the remainder of the 2021 season. The Cuban Sugar Kings were the first and only Major League Baseball franchise outside the United States; they played from 1954 to 1960 in Havana on the old Triple A International League, until 1960 when the communist government of Cuba eradicated all professional sports, including baseball.

Their motto was “un paso más y llegamos” trans- “one more step and we arrive”. Future stars as Octavio (Cookie) Rojas, Leonardo (Leo) Cárdenas and Tony González played for the Sugar Kings, which were also managed by Cuban-born and later the first manager of the San Diego Padres, Cuban-born Preston Gómez.

After being thrown out of Cuba by the government, the franchise moved to New Jersey in 1962 and Jacksonville, which today is the Marlins Triple A affiliate. The Marlins are the first team to celebrate the Cuban Sugar Kings and their heritage.

With some 25 Cuban players in the Major Leagues today, the largest island in the Caribbean was the pioneer as far as baseball talent is concerned coming to the United States. Esteban Bellán, born in La Habana, Cuba is recognized as the first Latin American player to appear at the big league level in 1871 with the Troy Haymakers of the old National Association, before it became the National League in 1876. Today, 150 years after Bellán played in the US, close to 30 percent of all major league baseball players are of Hispanic Heritage.

Stay well and stay tuned.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary:Albert Pujols a Dodger Not a Vanity signing

Albert Puljos on Thu Apr 22, 2021 swinging against the Houston Astros is now a Los Angeles Dodger after signing on Sat May 15, 2021. Keeping the future Hall of Famer in the Southland for the rest of this season. (AP News photo)

Albert Pujols a Dodger Not a Vanity signing

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Why the Los Angeles Dodgers did signed Albert Pujols? They had room for him. As simple as that. Plus they can use him, this was not a “vanity signing” because he is a Hall of Famer in waiting and the currently active player with the most home runs.

The Dodgers were hit by the injury bug; most recently they lost their great shortstop Corey Seager who fractured his right hand on a hit-by-pitch this Saturday by Marlins pitcher Ross Detwiler. That was a big blow to the reigning World Champs who are also without the services of starting pitcher Dustin May, out the remainder of the season with Tommy John surgery, pitcher David Price is expected to return this week, also out is young Edwin Ríos who can play first and third base among a bevy of other injuries to their players, including their star center fielder Cody Bellinger.

Yet, the Dodgers could still be the team to beat in that Western Division of the National League. Even without the services of Dustin May the Dodgers have a formidable pitching rotation with; Trevor Bauer, Walter Buheler, Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw The fortunes in baseball can shift very quickly.

The season began with a healthy Los Angeles Dodgers team, who right-of-the-gate, won 13 of their first 16 games and like in one of Sinatra’s many great songs, “That’s Life” says on its lyrics, “riding high in April, shutdown in May”. The Albert Pujols signing was a great deal for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Angels are on the hook for Albert Pujols $30 million this season while the Dodgers will only pay Pujols a prorated league minimum. Pujols stays in Southern California where he still has his permanent residence and gets a chance to go to a World Series again since his days with the Cardinals and something he couldn’t do in his tenure with the Angels.

His ex-team, the Angels, are now in the cellar and although a very good offensive team, they still lack the pitching to contend with the Astros and the Athletics. At the end, it could be a blessing for Albert Pujols that the Angels let him go. He said he still can play, he will get the chance with the Dodgers.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Oakland A’s Stadium Soap Opera – MLB to A’s “Build It or Relocate-“

The Oakland A’s could become the Las Vegas A’s if the Howard Terminal plan falls apart for a downtown stadium in Oakland. Vegas came up as one of the top cities the A’s could relocate to. The A’s have been in Oakland since 1968. ( photo from the Las Vegas Review Journal)

Oakland A’s Stadium Soap Opera – Built It or Relocate-

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–Major League Baseball instructed the Oakland Athletics to explore relocation options as the team tries to secure a new waterfront park in hopes of keeping the team at Oakland, where they have played since 1968. AP Reported that MLB released a statement Tuesday expressing its longtime determination that the current Coliseum site is “not a viable option for the future vision of baseball.”

A’s President Dave Kaval remains hopeful of a stadium deal, but there is beginning to be a time crunch; “we’re going to immediately start working with the league on exploring other markets and working hand in hand with them to identify which ones make the most sense and pursuing that right away,” A’s President Dave Kaval told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “We need to keep our options know. People know, we can’t even keep the lights on here at the Coliseum.”

The goal had been to inaugurate the Howard Terminal Park in 2023, but now, even if approved by the City of Oakland City Council this summer, it would not be ready until the year 2027. So, you can draw your own conclusions, but to me it seems the City of Oakland is more focus on giving their citizens a guaranteed salary than keeping the Major League franchise in their city.

Again, we see how local politics could kill another stadium proposal, a few years ago it was Fremont, here in the Bay Area. For us who have lived most of our lives in the Bay Area, if the Athletics leave, we should not be that surprised. Remember how long it took for the San Francisco Giants to get their new park.

Las Vegas would make the most sense, they could play at their AAA park where the Aviators play, until they finish the construction of their new park and they will still be in the Western Division, but there are other options if they move out of Oakland. Other cities that were mentioned for an A’s relocation Portland, North Virginia, Vancouver, Charlotte, and Montreal.

If you wonder if rebuilding at the Coliseum location was a possibility (like many have said in the past) MLB said in a statement today “it is not a viable option for the future vision of baseball.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Just a rough outing for A’s Irvin last Sunday; Angels Maddon says Pujols didn’t yell at him upon release

Oakland A’s pitcher Cole Irvin seen here throwing against the Toronto Blue Jays back on Tue May 4, 2021 took a tough loss on Sun May 9, 2021 against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Oakland Coliseum (AP News photo)

On That’s Amaury’s podcast:

#1 The Oakland A’s had Monday off and nearly swept the Tampa Bay Rays at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday but were edged out by the Rays who scored a tie breaking run in the top of the sixth that held up for the win.

#2 The frustrating part of Sunday’s game was the A’s got off to a early 3-0 lead but A’s starting pitcher Cole Irvin allowed three runs for the Rays in the top of the fifth. For Irvin was it a matter of his getting tired or were the Rays picking up on how to hit him?

#3 The A’s will start Chris Bassitt (2-2 ERA 3.70) who will be matched up against the Boston Red Sox’ Nathan Eovaldi (4-4 ERA 4.62) for a 4:10pm first pitch at Fenway Park. Amaury tell us how you see this match up of two of the American League’s best teams.

#4 Los Angeles Angels manager Joe Maddon said former Angel Albert Pujols didn’t yell at him as was reported by USA Today on Wednesday for leaving him out of the line up that ended with Pujols getting designated for assignment. Maddon also said he didn’t yell at either general manager Perry Minasian and club president John Carpino during a post game meeting upon Pujols learning of his release.

#5 Pujols had said upon leaving after his last day as an Angel that he still wants to play and that might happen if his former manager Tony LaRussa considers him for some role with the Chicago White Sox as a fill in DH or first baseman if Pujols would accept such a role.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Angels dismissal of Albert Pujols

The Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout (right) says it hit him a lot when he found out that Albert Pujols (left) was released for assignment by the Angels and some veteran players felt it wasn’t right what happened to Pujols (photo from the New York Post)

The Angels Dismissal of Alberto Pujols

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Last week the Los Angeles Angels designated for assignment/released the future Hall of Fame player (maybe unanimously) Albert Pujols. Logically, anybody that is following the Angels knows that with Japanese two-way superstar Shohei Othani, when he doesn’t starts a game on the mound, he is the team’s Designated Hitter and the resurgence of young first baseman Jared Walsh who is hitting over .300 with enough power to hit 30 or more home-runs this year, Pujols was not getting the playing time and at bats he wanted. That is a given.

However, to designate for assignment a player of Albert Pujols caliber, on the last year of his ten-year contract at the beginning of the month of May is not something you see every day and the team made the decision after only 29 games he had participated and them showed him the door.

Management is entitled to make their decision, that is what management in a front office does, but in my book the Angels did not show much grace to a man that played and who represented them very well since he signed ten seasons ago. In retrospect; could the Angels have spoken to him and told him of the possibility that he might be let go, depending how things worked as the season unfolded?

–More on this further down–This is a very emotional decision. The Angels want to win this year, they play in the same market as the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers who have won eight consecutive Western Division titles in the National League, plus the 2020 World Series and the Angels have not made it to the Postseason since 2014, and counting, with what many still consider the best player in the game, Mike Trout.

This looked (to me) like a decision that should had been made differently. It looked like it was not thought through. The LA Angels probably believe that a man that was hitting under .200 is “done” and they want to contend this year for a division title, so they dumped Albert Pujols so that Shohei Othani and Jared Walsh could handle the DH and 1B position, without interruption.

By the way hitting under .200 for everyday players at this time in baseball history should not be the main factor. If that is the reason. then most teams most release three or four players right away. Albert Pujols is one of the best players of this or any other generation. His ten-year $240 million salary ends this season, but the Angels are still responsible for paying remainder of his $30 million this year.

I called the 600th Home-run of his career one night at Angel Stadium for Fox Sport West (Español). Pujols is as dedicated to his craft as anybody I have seen in this game, Mike Trout (who himself is on his way to a Hall of Fame career) would always look to Pujols for hitting and guidance overall, not to mention many Latino players on the team. Pujols led by example, never a scandal, always on time for practice, always there for the team, always representing the Angels and the game of baseball as good as anybody.

Albert Pujols did not want to retire; he believes he still has something left in the tank. It would be interesting to see if another team would pick up Pujols. Tony LaRussa, back as manager with the White Sox has always been a big fan and friend of the Dominican-born player, when he played in St Louis and LaRussa was his manager, however, the Chicago White Sox are a young team with Yermin Mercedes, who is often a designated hitter and who is having a very nice season. If Albert Pujols gets the opportunity to play again if would be in the American League where he can DH. We can discount the National League.

According to reports five days after his release, Pujols wanted to be released if he could not get enough playing time. Anyway we look at it; it is not a good ending of a story. In reality, we might have seen the last of a Hall of Fame player.

Albert Pujols, 41 years old. three Time National League Most Valuable Player— Rookie of the Year— ten-Time All-Star– two-World Series Titles– two Gold Glove–six-Silver Slugger–Batting Title–National League Championship Series MVP– Among the Top Five players in MLB history in Home-runs 667, Runs-batted-in 2,100, Extra-base hits 1,352.

Why is Ted Williams in The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, was founded in San Francisco, California in 1999, registered by the State of California as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. Through the years at many of the exhibits, at different cities, baseball parks, libraries and community events, people ask why Ted Williams is inducted into the museum. Few people knew Teddy Ballgame had Mexican ancestry.

He just did not tell people about it. His father was Teddy Samuel Williams. Ted Williams was named after his father and Teddy Roosevelt. His mother May Venzor, was Mexican-American, born in El Paso, Texas, about 9 miles from Ciudad Juárez, México.

In that time in history (1940’s and 1950’s) Williams did not discussed his mother’s Mexican and Basque heritage. Williams wrote in his biography, ‘My Turn at Bat’, “If I had my mother’s name, there’s no doubt I would have run into problems in those days, with the prejudices people had in Southern California”.

But Williams also had credited his uncle, Saul Venzor, teaching him to hit and throw a baseball. It’s important to understand the era and circumstances when considering why Williams didn’t discuss his mother’s Mexican and Basque heritage. During an exhibit of the museum, at the San Francisco Main Library, in downtown San Francisco, a lot of people asked why Ted Williams is in this Hall of Fame.

Obviously many people still ignore his heritage and that is understandable, since the name Ted Williams is anything but Hispanic. Included in the purpose of the museum mission, is to inform the public in this regard about the great diversity that makes the large group of nations in Latin America as well as those born in the United States of Hispanic heritage.

There are 33 different countries in Latin America, with different cultures and traditions and even different languages. As a matter of fact in Brazil (the largest country in Latinamerica) Spanish is not the predominant language, but Portuguese. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world by territory, larger than Russia, Canada, US and China. Brazil is one of the great fútbol (soccer) powers of the world with a leading five (5) World Cup titles. But they also play baseball in Brazil.

Yan Gomes today is a catcher for the Washington Nationals. Other Brazilian-born players that have played in the Major Leagues: Paulo Orlando, Luis Gohara, Thyago Vieira and Andre Rienzo. Brazil has also participated in the World Baseball Classic.

The HHBMHOF is dedicated to recognizing the contributions made to baseball by Hispanic players. Since its inception, the HHBMHOF has inducted (74) players, coaches, broadcasters, Negro leagues Hispanic players, MLB Scorers, and Pioneer Executives. The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, respects the heritage of all players. The museum is proud to have the great Ted Williams in its Hall of Fame.
