The San Francisco Giants, the Houston Astros, the Pittsburgh Pirates, five or six teams that are friendly towards Hispanic players. The Hispanic Heritage Hall of Fame Museum is exhibited here in San Francisco and over at the Oakland Coliseum when the A’s used to play there and the A’s always had a great connection with the Giants.

It’s great day to celebrate the Hispanic players. Celebrating guys like Roberto Clemente more than 33% of the players are Hispanic players and it’s a great day to be at the ballpark. The Museum ended up picking last year’s Hispanic player of the Year. The Giants Willy Adames has had a great season hitting .231, 28 homers, and 67 RBIs.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Guardians Cecconi loses no hit bid in eighth; Phils Turner expected back for post season from hamstring injury; plus more

Cleveland Guardians pitcher Slade Cecconi tips his cap to the Cleveland crowd after nearly throwing a no hitter against the Kansas City Royals at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Mon Sep 8, 2025 (Chronicle-Telegram Cleveland photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1  Monday night Cleveland Guardian pitcher Slade Cecconi went into the eighth inning against the Kansas City Royals pitching a no hitter but Royals lead off hitter Michael Massey hit a lead off single and broke up Cecconi’s no hit bit which could have been the first one of the season. It also would have ended Cleveland’s four decade long wait for a no hitter but the wait continues.

#2 Philadelphia Phillies Trea Turner who is out with a strained hamstring for the rest of the season is expected back for post season in October. Phils manager Rob Thomson that Turner’s MRI results are better than expected and that the strain is not as bad as expected. Turner is in the third year of his 11 year $300 million contract.

#3 Milwaukee Brewers Christian Yelich is back in the line up on Monday night after he was scratched out of the line up and missed five game due to lower back pain. Yelich on Monday got one hit in four at bats in the Brewers 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. Yelich this season has played in 132 of the Brewers 144 games hitting .268 with 27 home runs and 92 RBIs.

#4 The Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe is on the seven day concussion IL after getting hit in the head by the Sacramento A’s Jacob Wilson’s backswing. The Angels Jo Adell was out of the line up due vertigo. O’Hoppe was removed after being hit in the head in Sunday’s game.

#5 Times are getting rough for the A’s after taking the first two games from the Angels on Friday and Saturday and then turning around and losing to the Angels on Sunday and getting crushed by the Boston Red Sox on Monday night 7-0 at Sutter Health Park. The hopes of getting out of the cellar are dimming for Sacramento.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A’s 2025 Reprise of 2024

Sacramento A’s pitcher Jefferey Springs is the only pitcher on the A’s staff to have double digits for wins with a record of 10-9 (AP News photo)

A’s 2025 Reprise of 2024

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Beginning September 1, the last month of the regular season, the A’s have 24 games left, currently with a 63-75 record. The 2025 version appears to have a much more explosive lineup than the 2024 version; with much less talented pitching, nevertheless, they are very close to ending with the same record, albeit with a very similar one, and have an outside (and although unlikely) shot at ending exactly as they did last season, which was a 69-93 record. Like the legendary Yankee broadcaster Mel Allen would say, “How about that!”

The 2025 version, as of the conclusion of August, has Brent Rooker with 27 home runs, rookie Nick Kurtz (probably AL Rookie of the Year) also with 27 home runs, and catcher Shea Langeliers with 29 home runs, with an excellent opportunity to reach 30-plus HR this season for the first time in his career. Mathematically, all three, Rooker, Kurtz, and Langeliers, could each finish with 30 home runs or more.

The team signed Luis Severino to a 3-year deal for $67 million (the biggest in franchise history) back in December 2024 to be the #1 starter and leader with his experience helping a young pitching staff; however, from the beginning, he complained about the park and was not happy at all in Sacramento.

As of today, Severino’s record is 6-11 with a 4.82 ERA. Since pitching is the most mentally demanding of all positions, I believe his negative feelings at the beginning of the season were detrimental to his mindset, which affected him and ultimately led to his inability to straighten out his season.

Jeffrey Springs is the only A’s hurler to have double-digit wins; 10-9 with a 4.17 ERA. In 2025, prior to his trade to the San Diego Padres on July 31, JP Sears had a 7-9 record with a 4.95 ERA for the Oakland A’s (or, the temporary “The Athletics”) over 22 starts and 111 innings.

He was the team’s second-leading winner at the All-Star break. Sears (La Tienda, in Spanish for The Store), as I nicknamed him during our Spanish broadcast, could find himself in the 2025 World Series, with a Padres team that is super-loaded with talent.

The Padres are so deep and have one of the best bullpens anywhere. They do not have to use Mason Miller to close every game; that is how deep this San Diego ballclub is today.

Starting Labor Day, these are the teams Los Atléticos will play during the home stretch: Cardinals, Angels, Red Sox, Reds, Pirates, Astros, and the Kansas City Royals. Only Houston, Boston, and Kansas City are teams playing over .500 with a good chance of advancing to the postseason. Will they finish in penultimate place, like last season, or in last place, like in 2023?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Raleigh setting records joins Mantle for most HRs by a switch hitter in a season; Cards Contreas ejected in wild argument; plus more news

St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Willson Contreras (40) is held back by manager Oliver Marmol (37) after he was ejected by umpire Derek Thomas (53) during the seventh inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium Mon Aug 25, 2025.Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Seattle Mariner catcher Cal Raleigh is setting records on Monday night he belted his 50th home run of the season against the San Diego Padres at T Mobile Field in Seattle. Raleigh has the most home runs hit by a catcher in a single season. Raleigh also joins Mickey Mantle as two of the only switch hitters to hit 50 or more home runs in season. Mantle hit 52 1956 and 54 1961.

#2 It was a wild argument by St Louis Cardinals designated hitter Wilson Contreas who was called out on a third strike that was inside the lower part of the imaginary box. Cards manager Oliver Marmol was also thrown out but had to restrain Contreras who almost made contact with plate umpire Derek Thomas and Contreas threw his bat at Cards hitting coach Brant Brown which was intended for the umpire. Umpire crew chief Jordan Baker said that Contreras was saying vulgar stuff to Thomas and that’s why he was tossed.

#3 After having quadruple bypass heart surgery Los Angeles manager Ron Washington said on Monday night that he feels great and said he was looking forward to recovering in New Orleans where he lives. Washington who was known to be a long time smoker and since quit said that doctors told him he could start doing light work in about eight weeks. Washington rejoined the Angels in Arlington to be with the team but he wasn’t there to work but to have fun with the guys.

#4 For the third straight game the Cleveland Guardians were shutout this time by the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night 9-0. The Guardians had not been shutout in three straight games since the 1991 season. “Everyone’s frustrated,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “We need to hit. We need to score more runs. We need to get things going on offense, and we’re all aware of it. We’re all working through it, and it’s going to take all of us individually doing our best.”

#5 The Sacramento A’s continue to roll winning their seventh in their last ten games this time at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night 8-3. The A’s win puts them just two games out of climbing out of the AL West cellar for a tie with the fourth place Angels.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A’s Best of Last Place Teams

A’s Best of Last Place Teams

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The objective is to win, but there can only be one champion. When all is settled, only one of 30 will get the trophy. In the Big Leagues, unlike Little Leagues, there is no “participation” award, and the closest thing to that is the Wild Card, which has been in place since 1995.

You always have the elite teams, such as the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and a few others, ‘the regular suspects’, but what about if we start from the bottom and see what’s happening there, with under 40 games left for most teams?

That could be interesting, and these are the ones at the bottom. The Cellar. These are the teams that, if the season ended today, would finish last in each of the six divisions. Orioles, White Sox, Athletics, Pirates, Nationals, Rockies.

In this group of non-contenders, the Rockies and White Sox have the best chance of reaching the dreaded 100 games lost. By the way, the White Sox established the new record for most games lost with 121 last season.

The Athletics and the Orioles had been evenly matched for most of the season. However, there is a big difference here, while the O’s were expected ‘in some way’ to be contenders, maybe as a wild card, nobody picked the A’s to do much, but to try to survive another year, they are the most criticized franchise in recent memory (thanks to his owner, who was brutally booed by fans at their home park a few days ago) they were expected to finish, like last season out of the cellar.

I could analyze this until the cows come home, but I will make it easier. Oh yes, there is another difference between the O’s and the A’s, the Orioles’ payroll is $154 million, while the Athletics is $77 million. The A’s lineup is a young and aggressive one.

The first in MLB this year to have three guys with 25 home runs: Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers, and the Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz. If the A’s retain the same nucleus of players and can improve their pitching from starters to closer (they traded one of the best in Mason Miller), and perhaps spend a little money??? In the off-season, they could be very interesting in 2026, possibly challenging for a wild card.

For the Orioles, it is even more interesting; they play in a tough division with the Jays, Rays, Yanks, and Red Sox, and it could be much more difficult to be relevant next season.

However, there are always trade possibilities; they have already traded veteran Cedric Mullins to the contending Mets, and I expect the Orioles to be busy in the trade and free agent markets this winter. Players on last-place teams often struggle to stay motivated when playoff hopes are lost and fan energy is low, highlighting the importance of professionalism.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: That’s Bananas! No Attendance Problem for these guys

That’s Bananas! No Attendance Problem for these guys

By Amaury Pi-González

Unlike the Athletics, Rays, and Marlins, or any of the other 27 Major League teams, the Savanah Bananas can draw between 50,000 and 80,000 fans at any given time. They are not in Major League Baseball, but these bananas are ripe and ready for entertainment every game, pleasing thousands of people and lots of families who enjoy their antics.

It reminded me of the first time I watched a game between the Harlem Globetrotters and the Washington Generals. This is a unique type of baseball featuring acrobats and comedians in uniform, some more athletic than others, but it’s entertaining nonetheless

The Savannah Bananas played in stadiums all across the country, including Major League Park. Most recently, August 10-11 at Coors Field, Denver, home of the Colorado Rockies. They often sell out venues. The Savannah Bananas drew 81,000 people to Clemson’s Memorial Stadium on April 26, 2025, as part of their Banana Ball World Tour as they played against the Party Animals.

The game was a sellout, with 81,000 fans in attendance. They also sold out Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on March 15 of this year, a crowd of 65,000. At the time, the sold-out game in Tampa was a record and also the first time the players played in an NFL stadium.

The Bananas are about to draw the same amount of fans (or close), maybe a little less than the A’s and Rays and That’s Bananas!

The Athletics at Sacramento are last among all 30 MLB teams in attendance, averaging just 9,000 per game. With fewer than 20 more home games this 2025 season, they will likely end short of 600,000 in total attendance.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Why is the A’s owner hated?

Athletics owner John Fisher announces the A’s will have a “Las Vegas” logo on players uniforms during a press conference announcing a marketing partnership with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority at the Las Vegas Convention Center Friday, March 7, 2025. (K.M. Cannon/Las Vegas Review-Journal)

Why is the A’s owner hated?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

We have all heard this phrase: “The customer is always right”, emphasizing the importance of customer satisfaction and prioritizing their needs. Many fans believe that A’s owner John Fisher has unfairly blamed the fans for the team’s struggles, thereby fostering considerable animosity. Baseball is a business; the A’s product is baseball, and the fans who attend the games and purchase their merchandise are the customers.

The A’s fans are correct to have certain expectations about the team; they pay to see the team play, and they expect to have a cohesive plan by management that, after a few years, you can finally have a team that performs well enough to be a competitive team, maybe worthy of a playoff birth, but not this season, as they looked like they will finish last, this would be the third time in the last five years they finish in last place.

While the phrase “the customer is always right” originated in the retail sector, it’s widely applied to various industries to encourage businesses to focus on meeting customer expectations. In September 2024, Mr. Fisher apologized for the team’s departure from Oakland in a letter addressed to fans. This letter was appropriately issued one day before the A’s open their final home series in Oakland, where they spent 57 years. That letter was not a hit with the fans; actually, it was more of a strikeout, with many fans believing it was an insult.

During the games in Oakland, after completing my preparation for the broadcast, which includes gathering statistics, reviewing starting lineups, and conducting interviews, I walk from the broadcast booth down to the seats and start conversations with fans.

The anger toward Mr. Fisher was evident to me from many fans during the last home stand in Athletics history at Oakland, September 2024.  I have spoken to A’s fans through the years at the park before games, and I would be conservative to say that 98% have shown great displeasure and animosity for the A’s departing Oakland and their desire for the owner to SELL.

From those who told me “How can we build a winning team, when he trades the good players, because he didn’t want to pay them,” to others who told me “he doesn’t care for Oakland, so Oakland should not care for him”. Other comments, I heard, would not be prudent for me to write here; let me say, it is the type of language you can see every day on social media. Where the “F word”is commonly used, before the owner’s name. I am not a fan of the “F” word, but it seems the youngest generation uses it with great frequency in our culture today.

KTVU CH 2 FOX Bay Area (FOX News) which is frequently cited as a top-rated news station in the San Francisco Bay Area, reported along with other news sources, the team is promising a $1 million fund for Coliseum workers impacted by its departure.

However, there have been reports from some workers who say they haven’t received assistance from this fund. reports indicate that some of the workers who expected to receive assistance from this fund were denied, leading to disappointment and anger among some former employees.

The A’s stated that the fund was created to provide meaningful support during the transition for the team leaving town. There is nothing like stiffing people that work very hard by the hour. In my world this is “immoral” some would call it “unethical”, dishonest, just pick one, they all fit very well..

The Oakland A’s relocated their entire broadcast operation this season, encompassing both radio and television, from Oakland to Sacramento, which included play-by-play announcers, commentators, producers, broadcast coordinators, directors, and other personnel.

However, they did not take their Spanish crew that they had for years in San Francisco, on station KIQI 1010AM, which also has a repeater station in Sacramento, 990AM. The Spanish crew consisted of three people. The only broadcast people that the A’s did not take to Sacramento were the Spanish broadcast crew. The team decided to “outsource “the Spanish to another station in Sacramento.

My friends at the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce note that over 560,000 residents in the greater Sacramento region (including El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba counties) identify as Hispanic.

Someone in the A’s organization never gave Mr. Fisher the memo that California is not like Maine or Vermont, where there are no Spanish speakers.  During the first of three years in Sacramento, the new digs have not been a great success for the ATH, selling just over 9,000 tickets per game, with approximately 20 home games left this season. Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento is a minor league park, with 14,000 capacity.

According to the website DIMERS, John Fisher is today the most hated owner in baseball.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Bad idea to play World Series as late as Nov 5th? O’s Eflin and Bautista on IL; plus more MLB news

Pete Alonso (right) and the New York Mets if they make the 2025 World Series could be forced to play in cold and wet conditions as late as Nov 5th as MLB scheduled the World Series to start Oct 24 and end Nov 5th. (AP News photo)

#1 Amaury, How bad of an idea is it that MLB has scheduled the World Series to start on Oct 25 with the possibility of the New York Mets hosting in cold weather that could drop in the 40s at night. Further the World Series could run as long as Nov 5th. Some critics are calling this a really bad idea playing in possible freezing conditions that could bring rain or snow.

#2 A Hawaiian real estate investor and broker are suing Los Angles Dodgers two way star Shohei Ohtani and his agent Nez Balelo for getting developer Kevin J Hayes Sr and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on Hawaii’s Big Island that they wanted Ohtani to endorse. The lawsuit reads, “Balelo and [Ohtani], who were brought into the venture solely for [Ohtani’s] promotional and branding value, exploited their celebrity leverage to destabilize and ultimately dismantle Plaintiffs’ role in the project — for no reason other than their own financial self-interest,”

#3 The Baltimore Orioles have lost two pitchers for the rest of the season. Right hander Zach Eflin will be getting a lower back procedure and closer Felix Bautista is suffering from a significant shoulder injury. Bautista is scheduled to see the doctor to get an update this week.

#4 San Francisco Giants lose another one this time to the San Diego Padres 4-1 the loss drops San Francisco to 4.5 games for the last and coveted NL Wild Card spot. The Giants have one more game with San Diego Wednesday and three coming up with Tampa Bay starting Friday.

#5 Houston Astro closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15 day IL due to a left shoulder strain. Hader could not pitch on Monday night and was experiencing shoulder discomfort prior to the game against the Boston Red Sox. Hader had a workout before Monday’s game and said he did not feel right.

Odds to Win the World Series

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

Players can get into big trouble if they bet on baseball games, particularly active players. Tucupita Marcano (one of my old-time favorite baseball names), a former infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was banned from attending Major League Baseball games, including those with the Pirates while he was on their roster.

Marcano placed bets totaling more than $150,000 on baseball games. including 25 bets on Pirates games while he was on the team’s injured list. Legal sports betting, including baseball games, is permitted in a growing number of U.S. jurisdictions following the Supreme Court’s 2018 decision to overturn the federal ban.

The specific regulations and availability of online vs. retail betting vary significantly from place to place. With some 45 games left this season for most teams, below are the teams that have the best odds to win this World Series come October.

I have taken an average of all oddsmakers as of today. According to most oddsmakers, these are the Top Twelve with the best chances of winning this next October Classic. From the best at the top, to the last in number ten.

Any of these 12 could end the postseason with the World Series trophy. 1-Los Angeles Dodgers 2-Philadelphia Phillies 3-Detroit Tigers 4-New York Mets 5-New York Yankees 6-Houston Astros 7-San Diego Padres 8-Seattle Mariners 9-Chicago Cubs 10-Milwaukee Brewers 11-Toronto Blue Jays 12-Boston Red Sox. These are the 12 best; the other 18 teams will have to wait until next year.

On a personal note: I condone gambling. Gambling can be highly addictive, impacting lives similarly to substance use disorders.

#1 Arizona Diamondbacks Blaze Alexander hit a home run that help beat the Sacramento Athletics 6-4 on Sunday. After winning seven out of their last eight games the A’s dropped their last two games to the Diamondbacks dropping the series going 1-2.

#2 The Diamondbacks Alek Thomas and Geraldo Perdomo had three hits a piece and the Diamondbacks won the rubber game on Sunday.

#3 The Nick Kurtz is not one to give up on Saturday night he got up ended in collision with catcher and teammate Shea Langeliers when both were going for a pop up to right of home plate Kurtz got the worst of it but stayed the game. Kurtz on Sunday helped the A’s cut the Diamondbacks lead when he hit a two RBI single in the fifth inning.

#4 The Diamondbacks closer Kyle Nelson came in in the ninth inning and picked up his first save for 2025. It came with a little work as the A’s JJ Bleday hit a solo home run. Nelson later got the A’s Gio Urshela to fly out to centerfield and Max Schuemann struck swinging.

#5 The A’s are off on Monday and open a three game series in Washington DC on Tuesday. For the A’s RHP Luis Severino (5-11 ERA 4.83) for the Washington Nationals Taijuan Walker (3-5 ERA 3.82) first pitch 3:45pm PT.
