Cardinal women use fourth-quarter comeback to beat Tennessee 77-70

In a nationally-televised non-conference game that featured 15 lead changes and seven ties, No. 2 Stanford pulled away in the fourth quarter and held off Tennessee 77-70 Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

The Lady Vols (7-6 overall) had a 58-50 in the third quarter, until Stanford’s Cameron Brink made a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter. From there, the Cardinal (outscored Tennessee 24-12 in the fourth quarter.

Brink scored four points in a 6-0 Stanford run that gave the Cardinal a 59-58 lead with 7:58 remaining. Jump hit a 3 to extend the Cardinal lead to 62-58. After Tennessee’s Jasmine Franklin hit a jumper at 6:35 of the fourth, Stanford went on an 8-1 run.

Brink led Stanford (11-1) with 21 points, 17 rebounds and six blocked shots, as she combined with Haley Jones and Hannah Jump to combine for 59 points. Jones and Jump each finished with 19 points. Jones also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Jordan Horston topped the Lady Vols with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rickea Jackson was next for Tennessee with 14 points, Sara Puckett had 11 points – all in the first half.

Stanford hosts No. 16 Creighton Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

#1 MBB the Cardinal (3-6) lost a close contest 68-64 to the Arizona State Sun Devils (10-1) in their last game Sun Dec 4th. The Cardinal got good efforts from Spencer Jones 13 points and Harrison Ingram and Michael Jones both scored 12 points.

#2 The Cardinal face the Green Bay Phoenix (2-8) who are struggling in their own right this Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal have won only three games and have the home floor advantage.

#3 Stanford women (10-1) have won four straight games, five of their last six games including a win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (7-2) in their last game 84-63. The Cardinal are getting offense and defense on both sides of the basketball and it might be safe to say look for this team to be a huge threat when March comes rolling around.

#4 The Cardinal match up against the Tennessee Vols (6-5) who have won four of their last five games. Tip is a 12 noon at Maples Pavilion how do you see this match up on Sunday.

#5 On Monday the Cardinal football team announced a new head coach Troy Taylor who comes from Sacramento State. Taylor help bring three Big Sky titles after taking over the Hornets football program in Dec 2018. Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir said “Troy’s credentials stood out”

Michelle could you walk us through what this will mean for bowl games versus playoff games?

#2 Michelle, it was learned before Washington State Cougars head coach Nick Rolovich was fired had seen a Immunologist who tried to “educate” Rolovich about the benefits of taking the double vaccine shot which Rolovich ended not taking and later getting fired by WSU. Dr. Guy Palmer the Immunologist said that Rolovich asked him if Bill Gates was involved in the vaccines which Palmer told him he was not. Rolovich had a number of theories why he didn’t need the vaccine and ended up getting fired from the university.

#3 Michelle, talk about bad sportsmanship the Tennessee Vols fans threw garbage and other debris on the field at Neyland Stadium in Tennessee on Sat Oct 16 after losing to the Ole Miss Rebels 31-26. 16 students and nine fans have been banned until next spring meaning their football season is over. Fans got unruly when Vols running back Jacob Warren on 4th and 24 was ruled short for a first down and the ball was turned over to the Rebels and the garbage came raining down on the field.

#1 No.8 Kentucky made it no contest with a 70-55 win over the No.19 Tennessee Vols. Four Kentucky players in double figures Isaiah Jackson led with 16 points and Davion Mintz followed up with 15 in the not even close contest.

#2 San Diego (3-8) didn’t have a chance they got landslided by Gonzaga (22-0) 106-69. The Zags Drew Timme led with 21 points and Jalen Suggs with 17.  Gonzaga remains undefeated.

#3 Michigan (16-1) and Ohio State (18-5), 92-87 Wolverines win it, Michigan high scorers Hunter Dickinson 22 and Eli Brooks 17 and Chaundee Brown had 15.

#1 Boise State left little doubt in their game against Air Force 30-19, Boise State quarterback Hank Backmeier threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns for the win. Boise State improved their perfect record to 4-0.

#2 The Wisconsin Badgers #13 defeated the Michigan Wolverines #11 35-14. It was the Badgers who wasted no time jumping way ahead of Michigan 28-0 in the first half. The Badgers quarterback Jack Coan threw for 128 yards, while running back Jonathan Taylor scored twice and ran 203 yards.

#3 The Florida Gators (3-0) just ran all day over the Tennessee Vols (1-2) all day 34-3. The game wasn’t even close and Gators quarterback Kyle Trask threw for 298 and two touchdowns. The Gators are going places.
