MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O: Deion understands the chances of losing left foot; Ohtani on pace to hit 51 homers; plus more

Former Atlanta Braves star and current Colorado Buffaloes football head coach Deion Sanders says he understands about having his left foot amputated and wants to get ready for the football season for 2023.(AP News file photo)

On the MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Former Atlanta Brave star and current University of Colorado football head coach Neon Deion Sanders may lose his left foot due to circulation issues. Sanders had two toes amputated and can’t feel his left foot. Sanders said he knows the risks and has eight toes left and said he pretty much understands.

#2 The Los Angeles Angels Shohei Ohtani is on his way to setting records the two way hitter and pitcher is on a pace to hit 51 home runs and is on a 14 game hit streak belting out his 23rd home run on Saturday at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City.

#3 The Tampa Bay Rays when they set sail for this current road trip they probably had lot of confidence they could handle the Oakland A’s who split a four game series with them then the Rays went to San Diego and faced Padres pitcher Blake Snell who struck out 12 batters in a 2-0 shutout at Petco Park.

#4 On Pride night at Dodgers Stadium the main gate was blocked by protesters when Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were uninvited by the Dodgers because they received complaints from the Catholic Church that the sisters dressing up like nuns were sac religious and were invited back because of the protests. The Dodgers later received complaints from former vice president Mike Pence and Senator Marco Rubio for reinviting the sisters.

#5 We didn’t get a chance to ask you about MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and his remarks from last Thursday regarding the Oakland A’s saying the A’s had their Tuesday reverse boycott and got a crowd of 27,000 plus that was over their average attendance and that the City of Oakland never really had a plan to keep the A’s in Oakland.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: A’s show grit in splitting with Rays; Owners only ones standing in way for A’s move to Vegas

Oakland Athletics’ Tony Kemp dives safely into third on Esteury Ruiz’s single against the Tampa Bay Rays during the seventh inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Thu Jun 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 The Tampa Bay Rays Luke Raley belted the game winning 4-3 go ahead home run in the top of the eighth inning to hand the Oakland A’s their second loss and a split in the four game series Thursday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum.

#2 The Rays got help from their rookie starter Taj Bradley who struck out the first A’s six hitters and set the tone early in the contest. Bradley finished with 11 strike outs for the game. Bradley did give up a home run to the A’s slugger Seth Brown in the bottom of the fifth inning.

#3 Daniel, during their seven game win streak and even in their last two loses to the Rays to close out the four game series the A’s were always in the game. On Thursday down 3-0 the A’s came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game that was a character that the A’s lacked until reason.

#4 The Rays are going well with their win on Thursday they became the first team this season to win 50 games. Taking that in consideration the A’s got a split against the Rays for the A’s to battle back it’s been a real mind over matter series for Oakland.

#5 Daniel just to get some updates the owners are preparing to vote on the relocation of Oakland to Las Vegas. If eight owners vote to oppose that would stop the relocation how much does MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred have influence on the owners vote for the A’s move to Vegas?

#6 Daniel, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo who signed off on SB1 which moves the stadium forward for construction and the park would sit in a “sports and entertainment improvement district” put together by the Clark County Commissioners. The way the park would be paid off by tax increment funding that would use all tax revenues in the district to pay back the $380 million in bonds.

Oakland Loses 4-3 To Tampa Bay After Raley’s 8th Inning Homer; Rays and A’s split 4 game set

Oakland Athletics pitcher Paul Blackburn throws against the Tampa Bay Rays during the first inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Thu Jun 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On a sunny afternoon in Oakland, CA, at the Oakland Coliseum. The Tampa Bay Rays (50-22) and Oakland A’s (19-52) had their final game in this four game series and it was everything that fans expect from an Oakland game this season.

The scoring happened early for Tampa Bay as they opened the second inning with two singles from Harold Ramirez and Luke Raley, then a third straight single by Issac Paredes scored Ramirez. Right after that Taylor Walls hit a double and scored Raley, it was 2-0 before you knew it.

Paul Blackburn who started on the mound for Oakland took these two runs on the chin and struck the next three batters out to get out the inning, but the damage was done. The Rays were up two early in this game and it’d be a rough thing to come back from for Oakland.

Tampa even got themselves what they thought was a needed insurance home run by Manuel Margot to make it 3-0 Rays, Margot’s third home run of the season and all three have come against the A’s. Rays pitcher Taj Bradley was the highlight for the first five innings as he not only pitched four scoreless innings with only two hits, he struck out 11 out of the 13 batters he faced.

Bradley would’ve gone a couple innings more, but in the fifth the A’s had his number. Two walks put runners on base and an error got Estuery Ruiz on base and bases were loaded. A Ryan Noda single scored Smith and Seth Brown’s single would score Kemp and Ruiz which tied everything up at three a piece.

The next three innings were a battle of bullpens and no team had the upper hand, but by the eighth inning, the door was blasted open when Raley hit a one out, solo home run and the air was taken out of the park as soon as contact was made with the ball and the ballgame was over when Pete Fairbanks got his sixth save after returning from the 15-day IL with inflammation in the left hip.

Robert Stephenson got the winning decision for the Rays and Austin Pruitt was awarded the loss. Next game Friday at 6:45pm PT is game 1 of a three game series against the Philadelphia Phillies and on the mound for the A’s is JP Sears (1-3, 4.15) against Taijuan Walker (6-3, 4.67) for the Phillies.

The A’s are 19-52 so far this season and while the players battle on the field, the fans are battling the owner. The “reverse boycott” made headlines, but may not have made a dent in Fisher’s plans to move forward as he continues his talks with Vegas and the MLB.

OAKLAND–On this day in 1899, the Cleveland Spiders were drowned by the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-1, before somewhat more than 100 fans (at least at game time) in the Steel City. The Spiders now were 8-38, .174.

On this day in 1962, the New York Mets took a 10-2 shellacking deep in the heart of Texas at the hands of  the Houston Colt ’45s. Casey Stengel’s minions were left with a record of  16-40, .286.

On this day in 2023, the Oakland Athletics, riding a seven game winning streak,  not unexpectedly saw their streak end with a 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays that left the A’s with a winning. percentage  .210 with 17 wins against 51 defeats. Watching it was like watching Awakenings, Robin Williams’ about a group of catatonic patients who briefly recover their mobility only to loss it again,  this time permanently, we wanted to see Major League or Damn Yankees.

The A’s chose Luis Medina as their starting pitcher, who was 1-5, 7.53 at game time, a fair reflection of how the Athletics have been playing this season. Indeed, his most recent and best, start occurred  early in the A’s  winning streak, on June 9th in Milwaukee, where he held the

Braves to a couple of runs,, both earned, on three hits and as many walks in five innings of work.  Today, Medina held on for 4-1/3 innings, throwing 79 pitches, 49 for strikes, and surrendering four runs, all earned although one was posthumous, one eight hit and a walk. He was the losing pitcher, and now has a record of 1-6, 7.55.

Tampa Bay went with Tyler Glasgow, another right hander who didn’t get his first win of 2023 until June 9th. Unlike Medina, his ERA coming into this evening’s game was low, 2.87, to be precise. He also has eight years of big league experience between Pittsburgh and St. Petersburg.

The veteran pitched 5-1/2 innings tonight and gave up three runs, all. earned, on six hits one for all the bases, and four walks. He threw 94 pitches, 63 for strikes, and committed two pitch clocks violations. He got the win, and his record now stands at 2-0, 3.43.

The Rays got off to an early lead in the top of the second on a walk to Randy Arozarena, who went to third on a double by Isaac Paredes and scored on Christian Bethancourt’s sac fly to right.  But your fighting A’s came roaring back, going ahead, 3-1 on JJ Bleday’s  fourth round tripper of the season, a 409 foot blast off the State Farm sign in left center.

In  spite of garnering two hits, two walks, and three stolen bases over the next two frames, the A’s advantage stayed at only three runs  after four innings of play. But then Tampa Bay came up like thunder. Taylor Walls singled to center, stole second and advanced to third on Shea Langelier’s errant throw.

The Rays’ second baseman scored on Manuel Margot’s double to center. He, in turn, scored on a two bagger to left by Yandy Díaz, who moved up 90 feet on Wander Franco’s fly to center.

That  signaled the end of Medina’s start. Sam Moll gave up the tie breaking tally when Josh Lowe singled to center, but eventually got the third out without allowing anyone else to cross the plate. Nonetheless, the visitors now led, 4-3.

A lead off single by Brown and walks to Brent Rooker and Jonah Bride led to Glasgow’s departure with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Thompson replaced him on the mound. He ended the threat by getting Díaz to ground in to a 6-4-3 twin killing.

Lucas Erceg coughed up another run,  pitching in relief of Moll in the top of the seventh. Margot defeated The Curse of the Leadoff Double by going to third on Langelier’s second throwing error of the evening; it came on an attempted pick off. Tampa Bay’s center fielder promptly scored on a wild pitch, making it 5-3, Rays.

Sam Long came on to close out the Rays’ eighth with two outs and two on. He got the final out, keep the A’s within striking distance at 5-3.

Colin Poche retired the A’s in order in their half of the frame.

The visitors put the icing on the cake in their half of the ninth. Margot once more got the better of  The Curse of the Leadoff Double and scored on Díaz’s single to center.

Jason Adam came in for the Rays in the bottom of the ninth, looking for his 11th save.  Peterson touched him for  leadoff single to right. Bride sent a fly to deep center where Margot corralled it at the warning track.  Díaz took a controversial called strike three.  Bleday popped out to third, and the A’s winning streak was over.

The series will wind up tomorrow, Thursday, at 12:37.  Paul Blackman (0-0, 3.60) will start for Oakland; Taj Bradley (4-3, 4,19), for Tampa Bay.

Oakland A’s podcast with Titus Wilkinson: It’s a safe bet Fisher won’t sell; Senate passes the bill with Assembly next to vote on Vegas ballpark

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Titus Wilkinson:

#1 Tonight’s thriller is predicted to be close to a sell out for the “Sell” T Shirts A’s fans who are attendance before the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland A’s at the Oakland Coliseum. Fans are trying to make a statement tonight for A’s owner John Fisher to sell the team.

#2 That won’t happen anytime soon as Fisher is hoping to move his club to Las Vegas. That came a little closer tonight with the Nevada Senate voting in favor of building a park on the Vegas Strip.

#3 Back on the field the A’s brought a five game win streak to Monday night’s game at the Coliseum after return from winning two out of three in Pittsburgh and a three game sweep in Milwaukee and played a mostly scoreless game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday that later became a one run game.

#4 One of the keys during the A’s win streak is they were getting some much needed pitching once you have that in place they were able to stay ahead and not look over their shoulders.

#5 Titus, the Rays and the A’s match up tonight in game 2 of this four game series the Rays started Jalen Beeks (2-3 ERA 6.12) and for the A’s right hander Shintaro Fujinami (3-6 ERA 11.12) pitched an inning and was replaced by Hogan Harris a 6:40 pm PT first pitch at the Coliseum.

OAKLAND–On this day in 1899, the Cleveland Spiders lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3, in front of an estimated 100 paying customers in the Steel City’s Exhibition Park. The loss gave the Spiders a season’s record of 8-36, .182.

On this day in 1962, the New York Mets, dropped a 3-2 decision in Houston when their fellow first year expansion team, the Colt 45s, walked them off, 3-2, leaving the visiting Metropolitans at 16-39, 2.91.

On this day, the Oakland Athletics extended their winning streak to six, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in a tense 4-3 battle and winding up the day at 18-50, .265. The green and gold may yet escape the ignominy of winding up the season with the worst winning percentage in major league history and have to settle for only having the worst one in what’s called the modern era.

The A’s starting pitcher, James Kaprielian, came to work a 1-6, 7.21, but he pitched well in his last outing, getting the win in the Athletics’ 11-2 shellacking of the Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium on June 6 . He went six innings and threw 101 pitches and gave up both of Pittsburgh’s runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits and a walk.

Tonight, he pitched well for five shutout innings before melting down and yielding three runs, all earned, in the sixth. He allowed a total of five hits , one a homer, and three walks during his tenure, striking out four. His pitch count reached 93, 64 going into the books as strikes. His ERA fell to 6.89. He earned the win, making his won-lost record 2-6.

Tampa Bay’s opening moundsman was Zach Elfin, boasting an 8-1, 2.97 record over 11 starts in 2023. His last appearance also was on the sixth, when he held the Twins to three hits over 6-2/3 frames. The Rays won that game, 7-0, so you don’t have to ask about his runs or earned runs allowed.

The AL East leading Rays and the subcellar dwelling Athletics matched zeroes over and Jonah Bride opened the bottom of the fifth with walks. Jace Peterson followed with a single that Randy Arozarena bobbled in left, but Rooker stopped at third, which gave the A’s a golden opportunity but no cigar.

Tampa Bay looked as if they might escape the East Bay threat when Kevin Smith grounded into a 5-2 force out. But Shea Langeliers came through with a bases clearing triple to deep center, and Ryan Noda’s single to center brought him home with the home team’s fourth tally.

That spelled “el fin” for Elfin. He had lasted a mere 4-2/3 innings and surrendered four runs, all earned, on five hits, and two bases on balls. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes, and his ERA ballooned to 3.26. He was charged with the loss, his second against eight victories this season.

Kevin Kelly closed the door on the A’s in the fifth and put them down in order in the sixth

The A’s outburst didn’t keep Tampa Bay from narrowing their deficit to 4-3. Kaprielian yielded a bunt single to Luke Raley and a walk to Josh Lowe. both of whom scored on José Siri’s homer over the 408 foot sign in the top of the sixth.

Ken Waldichuk replaced Kaprielian on the mound for the top of the seventh and survived a runners on the corners with two doon threat to pitch a scoreless inninng.

Shawn Armstrong took over for the St. Petersburg crew after the intimate gathering finished singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” He set the Rays down in order, fanning two of them.

It was Robert Stephenson who pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth for Tampa Bay

Waldichuk stuck around to face the Rays in the top of the ninth. He struck out Taylor Walls on a checked swing called third strike., retired Christian Bethancourt on a ground out to short, and finished the job with a gr0under to second that earned Waldichuk his first career save.

A large crowd is expected for tomorrow, Tuesday’s, 6:40 game, in which the Rays will send Hogan Harris (1-0, 6.46) against an Oakland hurler yet to be named. The crowd is not expected because of the promise that the A’s will continue their recent winning ways but because tomorrow is the night of the counter boycott.

A’s win for fifth straight time 8-6 to complete three game sweep over Brewers

By Jerry Feitelberg

What’s going on with the Oakland A’s? The A’s started the nine-game road trip with a record of 12-46. They lost the first four games to fall to 12-50. Suddenly, the A’s won two from the Pittsburgh Pirates and three straight against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The A’s finished the sweep by beating the Brewers 8-6 Sunday afternoon at American Family Field in Milwaukee. The win took work. The A’s leading 5-3 after eight put three insurance runs on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth. Oakland thought they were going to coast to an easy win.

They rallied to put three on the board to lead 8-3. Reliever Trevor May retired the first two hitters she faced in the bottom of the ninth. All the A’s needed was one more out.

May could not do the job. May walked William Contreras on a 3-2 count. He gave up a single to Adames. He walked Yellich and Victor Caratini to force in a run. Mark Kotsay brought in lefty Sammy Long to finish the game. Long gave up a single to Abraham Toro to make it an 8-6 game.

The Brewers had men on at first and third with two out. All the Brewers needed was one swing of the bat, and they would have won the game, but Sammy Long retired Blake Perkins for the final out. A’s starter, lefty J.P. Sears, finally won his first game of the year.

The Brewers started the scoring in the bottom of the second. With one out, left-handed hitter Christian Yellich hit an opposite-field home run to give the Brew Crew an early 1-0 lead. It was Yellich’s eighth dinger of the year and the 14th home run allowed by Sears this year.

The Brewers added a run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Second Baseman Andruw Monistario led off the inning with a single. Monistario stole second and scored on Owen Miller’s double down the left field line. Sears regained focus and retired the next three hitters.

The Brewers’ started Freddy Peralta coasted through the game’s first three innings. His only blemish was a walk to Ryan Noda in the first inning. Things changed in the fourth. A’s first baseman Ryan Noda doubled to start the rally. Peralta plunked Ramon Laureano with a pitch to put two men on with no out.

A’s left Fielder Seth Brown engaged Peralta in an epic battle. On the twelfth pitch that Brown saw from Peralta, Brown connected and sent the ball over the wall in right field to give the A’s a 3-2 lead. It was Brown’s fourth home run of the year. A’s DH Brent Rooker didn’t waste any time as he sent Peralta’s pitch into the second deck n left field. The A’s lead 4-2.

Lefty Sam Moll was on the hill to start the bottom of the sixth inning. The Brewers’ shortstop Willie Adames singled, leading off the inning. Moll struck out Yellich for the first out. Moll hit Luis Urias with a pitch.

Right-fielder Brian Anderson hit a ball that appeared to head over the centerfield wall. Esteury Ruiz ran back to the wall and made the catch of the day as he leaped and carraled the ball before it left the park. Blake Perkins singled to drive in Adames with the Brewers’ third run. Lucas Erceg came in from the bullpen to get the final out of the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Kevin Smith, the A’s light-hitting shortstop, surprised everyone in the ballpark when he homered into the second deck in left field. It was Smith’s fourth home run, giving the A’s a 5-3 lead.

The A’s plated three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. As mentioned above, it appeared they were going to cruise to an 8-3 win. Trevor May was summoned from the bullpen. He retired the hot-hitting Owen Miller on a groundout to second baseman Tony Kemp.

He struck out Joey Wiemer for the second out. All May needed was one more out. That did not happen. The Brewers scored three runs. A walk, single, two more walks, and another single produced three runs for Milwaukee. A’s reliever Sammy Long got Blake Perkins to ground out to end the game and earn his second consecutive save and second career save. The A’s win 8-6.

Game Notes- With the win, the A’s are 17-50. The five-game winning streak is the first one since the 2021 season. The Brewers fall to 34-32.

J.P.Sears was the winning picture. His record is now 1-2. Freddy Peralta took the loss and is now 5-6.

The line score for Oakland was eight runs, six hits, and one error. The A’s hit three home runs in the game. The line for Milwaukee was six runs, ten hits, and one error. Christian Yellich had Milwaukee’s only home run.

The A’s won their second series in a row. They beat the Pirates two games to one and swept The Brewers three straight. The A’s finished the road trip with five wins and four losses. It was the A’s first winning road trip this year.

The A’s will be at the Oakland Coliseum to play four games against the Tampa Bay Rays starting Monday night. The Rays beat the Texas Rangers Sunday afternoon 7-3 to improve to 48-20. The Rays are in first place in the AL East Division and have the best record in baseball. The A’s will send James Kaprielian to the hill Monday night. Kap is 1-6, with an ERA of 7.21. His opponent will be Zach Elfin. Elfin is 8-1, and his ERA is 2.97. The game will start at 6:40 pm.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Nevada Legislature takes vote tonight on A’s ballpark

From left, lobbyists Alfredo Alonso and John Griffin, Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher, President Dave Kaval and lobbyist Jessica Ferrato inside the Legislature in Carson City on May 31, 2023. (Nevada Independent photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry the Nevada State Legislature met until midnight last night discussing the SB509 the public funds from the State to fund the possible Tropicana ballpark in Las Vegas. There are residents who voiced their opposition to the ballpark because they feel the A’s might not be the right team for Las Vegas and that maybe expansion or the Tampa Bay Rays might be a better option.

#2 Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has called his second special session to push for the Tropicana ballpark. The bill didn’t get pushed through on Monday night and had been in a second special session for the last two night Tuesday and Wednesday. As of midnight last night nothing has been decided. The Legislature will take a vote tonight on the ballpark bill where the future of the A’s moving to Las Vegas is on the line.

#3 A’s team president David Kaval was put in a spot when asked about the team paying and being obligated to pay the entertainment tax. Kaval was told by assemblyman questioning him that he was answering a direct question when Kaval said the A’s would pay the entertainment tax through profits from the ballpark but would not make a commitment.

#4 The fact that there still is no decision on the A’s Las Vegas ballpark and it’s Thursday does that basically say that Lombardo who wants a budget passed needs to get the ballpark through for this session and the legislature is trying to sell those who are opposed reasons to try and change their minds.

#5 Las Vegas residents who spoke at last night’s session emphasized that 81% of Las Vegas residents polled are against the Oakland A’s moving to Vegas and that John Fisher and David Kaval are not the right people to lead this campaign and that the legislature should vote no on funding the ballpark.
