Syracuse uses big first half to upend Cal 75-66

Lucas Taylor scored 19 points and J.J. Starling bagged 18 for Syracuse Saturday, leading the Orange past California 75-66 in Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball at Haas Pavilion.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Orange (10-12 overall, 4-7 ACC).

The Golden Bears (11-11 overall, 4-7 ACC) were led by Jeremiah Wilkinson and Jovan Blacksher, who each scored a game-high 20 points. Rylis Petraitis was Cal’s leading rebounder with eight, to go with two assists, two steals and 13 points.

Syracuse opened the game with back-to-back layups by Starling, followed by a Taylor jumper and Elijah Moore’s 3-pointer, giving the Orange a 9-0 lead. The Orange never trailed.

Chris Bell hit a short jumper and a 3 to cap a 10-1 Syracuse run that put the Orange up by 13 with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Taking advantage of poor shooting by Cal (17 percent on 4 of 23 shots), the Orange build a 40-23 at the break.

The Golden Bears battled back with two 11-0 runs to pull within seven in the second half. Petraitis scored seven points during a 9-3 Cal run, pulling the Bears to within 67-61 on Blacksher’s layup with 1:14 remaining. The Golden Bears got no closer.

The Golden Bears were without Andrej Stojakovic, their leading scorer. Stojakovic averages 18.9 points per game – third in the ACC.

Cal hosts N.C. State on Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m PST.

#1 Stanford Cardinal (15-6) Maxime Raynaud scored 21 points and had 15 rebounds with his national leading 17th double double. Stanford had a 17-0 run to open the game on Wednesday night against the Syracuse Orange (9-12) 70-61.

#2 Syracuse failed to convert it’s first seven shots. Raynaud hit two 3 pointers and scored eight points. As Stanford had the 17-0 lead. The Cardinal were up 25-2 but the Orange came right back with a 12-1 run and also closed the gap by seven points twice with a 33-24 Stanford lead at the half.

#3 Midway in the first half the Cardinal scored four three pointers more than Syracuse had two baskets. The Orange shot 8 for 15 in the last ten minutes of the first half. The Cardinal went three for 13.

#4 Raynaud had a double double before the first half was over. Raynaud had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.

#5 The Cardinal visit the SMU Mustangs in Dallas on Sat Feb 1 for a 3:00pm PST tip. SMU are in fourth place and are 12-3 at home. Stanford is 3-3 on the road so far this season. How do you see this match up.

Cardinal Squeezed the Orange 70-61, on a late Wednesday Night inside Maples

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (15-6, 7-3 ACC) Peeled the Syracuse Orange (9-12, 3-7 ACC) 70-61 all around the Farm, and remained unbeaten at home (Maples) and the Bay (Haas) in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

ACC Player of the Week, Maxime Raynaud started the bi-coastal contest with his own personal 5-0 run. He hit a shot clock buzzer-beating 3-pointer, then scored another bucket shortly thereafter. The Cardinal added 12 consecutive more points, to perform a 17-0 run, before Syracuse could even affect the scoreboard.

After a 7:35 scoring drought by the visitors from the Empire State, they finally got into the scoring column on a layup by senior guard Jaquan Carlos. Even after getting off the “Goose Egg,” they trailed by as much as 23 points midway through the first half.

From that point on, Syracuse went on a 22-8 run by intermission. During that push, the Orange cut the deficit to seven twice, and trailed by nine after 20 minutes of action, 33-24.

Raynaud was the only player in double-figures at the half. He compiled a double-double, with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In the second half, the Cardinal put the lead pack in double-digits right away, on an Oziyah Sellers Trey. However, Syracuse relentlessly showed they still had juice inside of them and continued to cut into the Cardinal’s impressive lead.

Syracuse was able to get within six , but no closer than that because Stanford turned up the defense and recovered crucial and timely rebounds. The Oranged ended the game with five more turnovers than their counterpart, and gave up 10 more points than they were able to score off of Stanford’s miscues.

All other statistics were close, but the 10 point difference in turnover was the difference, as the extra 5 were converted to two points each. Winning by nine, 70-61, was a direct result of that margin of victory.

Raynaud improved on his halftime double-double, by garnering a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds. Jaylen Blakes joined him with 14 points and 6 rebounds, while both Oziyah Sellers and Benny Gealer offered 10 points apiece.

Jaquan Carlos led the way for the Orange with 16 points, and his teammate Eddie Lampkin chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Stanford will next be in action in Dallas, TX, Saturday, February 1, as they take on the Southern Methodist Mustangs 5:00 PM CT, on the ACC Network. Syracuse crosses the Bay on the same date to take on the California Golden Bears 7:00 PM PT, on ESPN2. The aforementioned Carlos led the Orange with 7 points and 3 assists.

#1 It was a hard fought effort by the Stanford Cardinal (14-6) against the Florida State Seminoles (13-7) as the Cardinal came away with a seven point win over the Seminoles 78-71.

# 2 The Cardinal have now won 11 of their last 12 games at home and this season is the first time the Cardinal have gone 11-1 in their first 12 games since the 2020 season. Against the ACC teams the Cardinal are 4-0 for a perfect home record.

#3 Stanford’s Oziyah Sellers led with 27 points and shot 10-16 from the field and was four for six outside the three point line. Benny Gealer and Jaylen Blakes both in double figures and scored 13 points each. Maxime Raynaud had eight point and grabbed a season high of 14 rebounds.

#4 Stanford’s Ryan Agarwal scored the first five points of Saturday. Stanford led early in the game 18-10 and Agarwal had a 7-0 run from Sellers in the middle of the first quarter. Sellers also was hitting the three pointers with three 3 pointers in the first 20 minutes. Chisom Okpara hit a shot from behind the arc with 20 seconds half heading into the half.

#5 The Cardinal face the Syracuse Orange (9-11) on Wed Jan 29th. The Orange lost their last game 77-73 to Pittsburgh Panthers (13-6) 77-73. The Orange are 12th in the ACC. The Orange have lost their last two games. The Cardinal have the home floor and a three game win streak going into this game against the Orange on Wed Jan 29 at 8:00pm.

#1 Morris talk about how the two interceptions by the Syracuse Orange defenders helped protect Syracuse’s lead and did it at all play with Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza psyche.

#2 The Orange did have a dominating defense stopping the Bears ground game and that made a difference in winning by an eight point edge.

#3 The Bears had a tough time getting to Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord who was 29-46 for 323 yards. The Golden Bears defense had a tough time trying to stop Syracuse running back LeQuint Allen who ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

#4 Much respect in spite of the Bears struggle Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said that Mendoza was tough to figure out at times, “Mendoza, he’s very crafty,” said Brown. “He’s got a strong arm and a quick trigger finger, so we knew we had to switch the picture up a lot for him.”

#5 Morris, it’s the Big Game this Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The Bears (5-5) and the Cardinal (2-8). The Bears have won two of their last four games and the Cardinal snapped a six game losing streak after winning last Saturday 38-35 against the Lousiville Cardinals.

#1 Stanford had a tough time shutting down NC State Wolfpack on Sat Nov 1st in Raleigh as NC State crushed the Cardinal 59-28. The Cardinal defense was left on the field for most of the game and just couldn’t stop the NC State offense who had a big day in scoring.

#2 Not only were the Cardinal steamrolled by NC State this last loss marks Stanford sixth straight loss in a row.

#3 The win for the Wolfpack ended their two game home losing streak. The Cardinal just couldn’t stop the Wolfpack run and in third quarter the Wolf Pack exploded for three touchdowns that pretty much put the game of reach for Stanford.

#4 For Cardinal quarterback Justin Lamson only 3-8, 103 yards passing, one touchdown, and one interception. From all intense and purposes Lamson didn’t get enough time because it was four and out in most of Stanford’s offensive series.

#5 Up next for the Cardinal the Louisville Cardinals (6-3) this Sat Nov 16th. The Cardinals have won three of their last five games. The Cardinals won in their last game 33-21 against Clemson on Sat Nov 2. It’s the Cardinals vs. the Cardinal at Stanford Stadium a 12:30pm PST.

#1 Morris talk about how big of a day was it for Cal Bears (4-3) quarterback Fernando Mendoza who threw two touchdown passes against Wake Forest in Cal’s 46-36 win last Saturday?

#2 For Mendoza 40-56 on passing for 385 yards threw only one interception and for the most part was getting good protection up front.

#3 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox had to be relieved as this was Cal’s first road win since Sep 7 after beating Auburn 21-14. Wilcox said that the team kept after Wake Forest the whole game long, “Really proud of them for finding a way to win. Just proud of them for staying in the moment.”

#4 Talk about how valuable Liam Johnson’s interception was and how huge it was to keep Cal three points ahead of Wake Forest late in the game.

#5 Next up for Cal the Syracuse Orange come calling. Syracuse (6-3). The Orange have won four of their last six games. Syracuse in their last game last Saturday lost a tough one to Boston College 37-31 in Boston. Cal has home field at Berkeley Memorial coming off the win against Wake Forest. How do you see this match up this Saturday?

#1 Michael, we’ll start off with Stanford kicker Emmet Kenny’s 39 yard field goal in the last few seconds as Stanford defeated the Syracuse Orange by just two points on Fri Sep 20 26-24.

#2 It was something special for the Cardinal getting their first ACC win and to get it on the road against the Orange who are considered a force in the ACC.

#3 “I felt really confident out there mainly because I have the best snapper, holder and line blocking in the country,” Kenney said.

#4 Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels was 23-28 for 178 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and got the win.

#5 The Cardinal face the 2-1 Clemson Tigers. The Tigers last Sat Sep 21st smashed the NC State Wolfpack 59-35. Lots of offense and Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik was 16-24 for 209 yards and three touchdowns.

Stanford Kicks Field Goal In Final Seconds to Best Syracuse 26-24

The Stanford Cardinal (2-1) were not favored Saturday as they took on the Syracuse Orange (2-1). Not by a long shot. They shocked the close to 50,000 fans at the JMA Wireless Dome in fact the Cardinal led for most of the game.

The Orange led once in the fourth quarter with three minutes left in the game. Stanford put together a great final drive which was almost stalled due to a penalty but kicker Emmet Kinney sent a 39 yard field goal through the uprights for the 26-24 win.

Game recap: It was Stanford on the board first when quarterback Ashton Daniels found Elic Ayomanor for 17 yards making a one-handed grab in the end zone for the touchdown and the Cardinal had the early lead 7-0.

It was a great start for Stanford. The Cardinal made their second defensive stop in the first quarter taking back possession and the Stanford offense was back on the field. A roughing the passer Syracuse penalty gave Stanford great field position. A Stanford touchdown was nullified when holding was called and the first quarter came to an end with Stanford leading 7-0.

The Cardinal would start the second quarter on the Syracuse 32 yard line, 2nd and 19. The Cardinal were forced to settle for an Emmet Kenney field goal, which was good for 38 yards and a 10-0 Cardinal lead. The Stanford defense had done a great job so far in this game.

Syracuse intercepted the ball their first of the evening and threatened to turn the tide of this game. They had a first down deep in Stanford territory but the Cardinal defense held them to a 30 yard Brady Denaburg field goal.

Syracuse so far wasn’t able to take advantage of field position and making big plays when they needed them. The Cardinal defense continued to harass the Syracuse offense and with 2:00 minutes left in the half, Stanford was in field goal range.

Once again the Cardinal could not advance the ball but successfully kicked a 51-yard field goal taking a 13-3 lead. When it seemed as if Stanford would take the 13-3 lead into the locker room lightning struck.

Syracuse scored quickly with less than a minute left on the clock. Quarterback Kyle McCord connected with Umari Hatcher for 67 yards and a touchdown and Stanford was hanging onto a three point lead 13-10 at halftime.

Stanford would extend their lead in the third quarter thanks to their defense. A Kyle McCord pass was intercepted by Stanford’s Mitch Leigber returning it for 71 yards and a touchdown. The Kenney kick was good and the Cardinal had a 20-10 lead.

Syracuse again scored with under a minute left in the quarter when quarterback Kyle McCord rushed for 19 yards. The Orange had fought from behind for the entire game now trailing by a field goal 20-17.

A little over five minutes into the fourth quarter Stanford had a great opportunity to score a touchdown but again had to settle for a field goal Kenney’s third attempt which was good from 35 yards giving the Cardinal a 23-17 lead.

The Stanford defense had fought to keep Syracuse from taking the lead but they needed more from their offense. The Cardinal defense had come up with stop after stop and a couple of interceptions.

With three minutes left in the game, Syracuse scored their second touchdown of the half taking a 24-23 lead. McCord connected with Jackson Meeks for 13 yards and their first lead of the game.

Stanford answered driving deep into Syracuse territory. The Cardinal were on the Syracuse 21 yard line and Emmet Kinney was looking at a 39 yard field goal for the win. The final possession was a great drive and Kinney finished it off with his fourth successful kick. What a win this was for Stanford, the final 26-24 in a gutsy gritty game.

Game recap: The Orange sought to extend their winning streak to three in a row when they took on newcomer to the ACC the Cardinal Saturday night. Stanford had made the long trip to New York for their first ACC game the first of many cross-country ACC trips.

Stanford joined the conference coming from the Pac-12 over the summer. This was the third game in a four-game season opening home-stand for the Orange and they wanted to stay on course. Syracuse has a lethal offense passing at nearly 60%.

Orange quarterback Kyle McCord amassed 350 yards against Ohio last Saturday in their first win 38-22 and 380 yards against Georgia Tech in their second season win 31-28. They are an elite passing offense.

The Cardinal were expected to finish last in their first year in the ACC and making this long trip for a Friday night game was certainly expected not help their cause as they played their third game of the season. Stanford does have a duel-threat quarterback in Ashton Daniels and Justin Lamson.

Stanford was thought to not have enough to keep up with the Syracuse offense. The Cardinal lost to TCU 34-27 in their opener and then crunched Cal Poly 41-7. Everyone loves an underdog so don’t count Stanford out. They shocked Orange Nation on Friday night.

Next up for Stanford will be the Clemson Tigers on Saturday September 28th at Memorial Stadium in South Carolina. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

#1 Stanford Cardinal head coach Troy Taylor had a press conference on Monday and talked about making the cross country trip to Syracuse University in the State of New York saying, the Cardinal left around 1:00pm PT on Wednesday and got into Syracuse that evening got some sleep and will get ready on Thursday for meetings, practice and get adjusted to the East Coast time change.

#2 Coach Taylor said it’s not an early kick on Saturday at 4:30 PM PT and 7:30 PM ET. The plan is to get out to Syracuse a little bit early and get adjusted. Coach Taylor said that he’s talked to other coaches and players who have made the cross country before saying their going out there earlier and that they could always adjust if they don’t feel right about it.

#3 Coach Taylor talked about Fran Brown head coach for the Orange and was asked about his credentials part of the staff that won two times at Georgia. Coach Taylor said that he has a good history of being around winning programs. There is little doubt that Coach Brown wants to bring a little of that to this game this coming Saturday.

#4 Coach Taylor talked about the Orange being a 2-0 team coming into this Saturday being a physical group and being explosive on offense. In short time that Coach Brown has been there Coach Taylor said that he’s done a great job of putting together a really good football team.

#5 Lastly Michael, Coach Taylor was asked about quarterback Ashton Daniels saying that Ashton is a tremendous person first and foremost and that Daniels is a great kid and that Daniels is an incredible competitor. How do you see his task against the Orange this weekend?
