Sacramento A’s Relocation podcast Daniel Dullum:

#1 According to reports Sacramento A’s owner John Fisher still hasn’t spent the money for the Las Vegas ballpark at the old Tropicana so he could get the $380 million in Nevada State public funds. SB1 was approved to pay for part of the A’s Vegas park going on two years now.

#2 Fisher said after the A’s ground breaking at the Tropicana that the cost of construction for the new park will now run up to $2 billion and according to reports Fisher doesn’t financially have anything near $1 billion despite being worth $3 billion.

#3 John Fisher and his family are not going to spend their own money namely the $1.75 billion out of pocket for the ballpark project but are trying to confirm loans from US Bank, Goldman Sachs, investments from K Pop star Suga, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Chan Ho Park and sale of his MLS team the San Jose Earthquakes.

#4 It was also reported at the ground break this month in Vegas that the two cranes that were pictured behind Fisher while he was speaking to the media there were rented cranes as props and they were never going to be in use that outside of moving dirt around there is nothing really seriously happening at the old Tropicana property in terms of getting a foundation started.

#5 Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred who was at the groundbreaking holding a shovel and putting it in the dirt held in a baseball diamond tray said he was confident that the project would go through but critics after the ground breaking said that Manfred should have made sure everything was covered before committing the A’s to Las Vegas but that didn’t happen and the ground breaking looks like a farce.

Does Anybody Care about the A’s in Sacramento?

Let’s say you have your eyes on that brand new car you dream of, and you are “almost sure” you are going to buy it in 2028 because you just put your other car (Soccer Team)for sale, but in the meantime, you need another vehicle.

For the A’s owner, West Sacramento Sutter Health Park, it’s like leasing an Avis car for a couple of years, hoping to buy a brand-new car in a few years in Las Vegas. You do not care much for maintaining the Avis lease; you are only interested in being practical, since you are not going to buy it anyway.

Sacramento’s 15 minutes of Major League fame have been cut to 5 minutes, all the hype a month before the season was more “sizzle than steak:”, in the stadium, they call it “all foam no beer” and in the cattle areas of California, “All hat no cattle”.

The A’s announced in January that Opening Day tickets were sold out, despite offering $25 lawn seats the night of the game. The team announced a sold-out crowd of 12,119 fans at the home opener. However, team officials said Sutter Health Park’s total capacity is 13,416.

The Oakland A’s fans in Sacramento (the number is unknown) are disappointed by the team’s temporary move to Sutter Health Park, expressing feelings of betrayal and a sense of disconnection from the team in its new temporary home.

They miss the Oakland atmosphere and feel the team is not embracing Sacramento. Some Sacramento fans, however, are excited to have a Major League team in their city, even if it’s just for a temporary period, but the team also couldn’t care less about Sacramento.

To the best of my knowledge, the A’s are not even recognized by the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, or the Sacramento Asian Chamber of Commerce. Neither did the A’s approach them.

#1 Lots speeches made at the Sacramento A’s and future Las Vegas A’s ground breaking at the former Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

#2 Amongst some of the speakers John Fisher who stated that he was excited to get this far to having shovels in the ground and that he thanked MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred for help making the relocation of the A’s a reality.

#3 Fisher was asked about the sale of his MLS soccer team the San Jose Earthquakes and how that sale will make the difference in paying for the new A’s Las Vegas stadium and help make up for Fisher’s share of the construction costs at $1.75 billion.

#4 Was there any questions raised regarding regret that the A’s had left Oakland or was this a total turn the page event and it was never brought up and it’s onto the next step in developing the Las Vegas ballpark and bringing Major League Baseball.

#5 Manfred had a chance to speak and wanted address what he wanted in getting the A’s a new ballpark something he had been working on since he took over as baseball commissioner.

#1 Daniel, the Athletics groundbreaking will be held at the old Tropicana Casino and Hotel on Monday June 23 at 8:00AM. Some question the time of the ribbon cutting being unusually early by press conference standards.

#2 Some said it could be a tactic to keep the amount of press away that will ask about A’s owner John Fisher’s construction costs and if he paid his share of the $1.75 billion yet?

#3 Do you look at this groundbreaking as a closer step to getting the stadium constructed or is this ceremony being done to keep the pressure off of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority when questioned when are there going to be shovels in the ground.

#3 A’s president Mark Badain said that construction for the Vegas ballpark started back in April and the A’s wanted to make Mon Jun 23rd ribbon cutting a celebration for the A’s and local officials.

#4 VIPs expected to attend the groundbreaking Mon Jun 23rd, A’s owner John Fisher, Badain, Las Vegas Stadium Authority president Steven Hill, Nevada State Legislature, members of the Clark County Commission and Governor Joe Lombardo.

#5 The Stadium Authority report says the construction of the park will take 32 months and is expected to be ready opening day 2028.

#1 This week it was reported the A’s will pay $1 billion into their Las Vegas ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip at the old Tropicana site. Golden Sachs and US Bank also are contributing another $300 million in loan money towards the project. The $1 billion from the A’s is funded from owner John Fisher and his family.

#2 Fisher had tried to find investors to buy minority portions of A’s ownerships and tried to find local investors in Las Vegas as well going on a good portion of the year since December 2024 when the MLB owners approved the move to Vegas to find minority investors. Not having success in finding partners Fisher has teamed up with his family to pay the $1 billion.

#3 With the rising appreciation of Major League teams who have their own park and amenities Fisher convinced his family that this would be an investment that will no doubt have big returns. The A’s could appreciate their current worth from $1.5 billion to $3 billion once they are at their new Las Vegas digs.

#4 A meeting scheduled with the Las Vegas Stadium Authority headed by Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce CEO Steven Hill for December 5th to put the final vote for final approval and towards breaking ground at the Tropicana for the ballpark. Construction is expected to begin in March and the ballpark should be finished with a opening day target date of 2028.

#5 Long shot: Schools over Stadiums has hardly given up hope to stop the public funding of SB1. Alexander Marks Schools over Stadium spokesman who has attended many of the ballpark meetings at the Las Vegas Stadium Authority has spoke many times against the funding of public money being used when it should be used for public education. Marks hopes to get enough signatures to put an initiative on the Nevada ballot to stop the public funding of the A’s Las Vegas ballpark. If successful the A’s would be forced to find private money instead of Nevada State money or SB1 funding for the $350 million the A’s said they would use out of the $380 million.

#1 Steve Hill the president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said on Thursday that the three key documents that was needed to start construction on the Las Vegas A’s ballpark would most likely be approved by December 5th.

#2 So confident was Hill he said that the ballpark construction was rounding third and headed for home. Hill said that the three approvals should make it by a schedule October 17th meeting and had scheduled a December 12th meeting as a “safety valve.”

#3 The three documents that Hill was referring to are the lease, non-relocation and development agreements. No vote was taken for the lease agreement on Thursday.

#4 The lease agreement starts out at 30 years but could extend out as long as 99 years. The football Las Vegas Raiders have a 30 year agreement with no language after their lease runs out.

#5 The A’s are in their final season in Oakland and will be playing in Sacramento for the 2025 season. The A’s said they are financing $300 million for the stadium cost and the private costs at $850 million will come from a private equity. Hill said that the A’s could present their financing plan at the October meeting.

As the Oakland A’s prepare to end their over half-century playing at the Oakland Coliseum this 2024, things in Las Vegas are moving with Bally’s corporation. And according to Bally’s Corp CEO Soo Kim, “It’s business as usual.”

So what does this mean? According to the Las Vegas Business Journal, which has been the best source of information regarding the proposed A’s relocating to Las Vegas, Kim (who managed the hedge fund) bought out Bally’s in an announced $4.6 billion deal.

With this deal, Bally’s owns the rights to develop the 35-acre Tropicana site. Thursday’s announcement moved the A’s closer to the potential move, as the Tropicana is now scheduled to be demolished in October.

Bally’s owns the rights to develop the 35-acre site for the proposed A’s ballpark. According to the Las Vegas Business Journal, the A’s are negotiating and finalizing a trio of agreements with the Las Vegas Stadium Authority that would make up to $380 million in public funding available to the team to finance a portion of the stadium’s costs.

Steve Hill, the Stadium Authority Chairman, said last week that he expects the work of those agreements, the development, lease, and non-relocation, to go until about December when they will be approved as the A’s enter into a contract with Clark County.

Once those agreements are approved, the A’s must also spend the first $100 million on the ballpark project before the public money is available. According to the Las Vegas Business Journal, the A’s will likely use just $350 million of the available $380 million in public funds.

Plans call for the construction of the A’s stadium to begin in April and be completed in time for the 2028 MLB season. Meanwhile, the A’s are scheduled to play the interim year of 2025-2027 at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, as their tenure at the Oakland Coliseum ends September 26 against the Texas Rangers.

Like everything in a free enterprise capitalist Democracy, money rules, and like one: “philosopher” said, “money talks and BS walks”. Which is paraphrasing corrupt Democrat Congressman Michael Meyers in the 1980 Abscam probe.

It means, pay me a bribe or go for a walk, i.e., I’m not listening to you. It is similar to the “Pay to Play” corruption scheme in various parts of the country. “Pay to Play” is also why the FBI has investigated the Mayor of Oakland Sheng Thao.

#1 Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority are not commenting regarding the $100,000 sponsorships that the Las Vegas Aces players received. They were presented the sponsorship from Steven Hill president from the LVCVA when he spoke to the players in the dressing room on a video that took the players by surprise. There had been questions of the validity of the sponsorship if this puts the Aces over the salary cap space but the Aces head coach Becky Hammonds said that the Aces had nothing to do with the sponsorships and that the $100,000 shouldn’t go against the salary cap. The Aces are two time WNBA Champions and have brought good business in for the city of Las Vegas.

#2 The Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis is trying to return for game 4 against the Indiana Pacers on Monday night Porzingis is suffering from a soleus strain of his right calf. Porzingis has been doing exercises to improve the calf and some on court workouts.

#3 From a top notch college player from Iowa to signing with the Indiana Fever to getting some great endorsement deals Caitlin Clark signed with Wilson. Clark’s signature appears on three different Wilson basketballs  titled Threes Up, Record Breaker and Crowd Maestro.

#4 The Philadelphia Phillies Ranger Saurez continues to baffle opposing hitter striking out ten hitters over seven innings pitched and improved to 9-0 with a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers. The win gives the Phils their 35th win of the season a big league best so far.

#5 The Celtics Jayson Tatum scored 36 points and scored ten points in overtime. Jaylen Brown tied up the game in regulation with 6.1 seconds left as the Celtics beat the Indiana Pacers in game 1 of the third round of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals 133-128 at TD Garden in Boston. Game 2 is tonight at 5:00pm at the Boston Garden.
