MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O: Dodgers in a world of pain; Nats Strasburg retirement announced prematurely; plus more news

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler will miss the rest of the 2023 as per the advice of his doctors and training staff and plans to return next season. (The Tennessean file photo)

On the MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

#1 The Los Angeles Dodgers are feeling the pain, two time All Star pitcher Walker Buehler is out for the rest of the season. Buehler hasn’t pitched since August 2022 after having his second Tommy John surgery. Buehler talked it over with his family, team doctors, front office staff and said it would be best if he waited until next season to return.

#2 Last week Sunday Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias 27, was arrested for domestic violence and was released on $50,000 bond. This was Urias’ second domestic violence charge his first time was in 2019. It’s unlikely that Urias will ever pitch for the Dodgers again as his contract expires after this season.

#3 The Washington Nationals regret that press reports say that pitcher Stephen Strasburg will retire and that such an announcement was premature and that the Nats really wanted to be the ones to make such announcement. Strasburg had been suffering from thoracic outlet syndrome, which is common for pitchers on the downside of their careers.

#4 More Dodger injuries on Thursday against the Miami Marlins Mookie Betts injured his foot after hitting a first inning pitch off his foot. The injury took it’s time to creep up on Betts as Betts realized it in the seventh inning and was seen leaving Loan Depot Park on crutches the good news is x-rays show Betts didn’t suffer a fracture.

#5 Schools over Stadiums is considered the last hope for the Oakland A’s to stay in Oakland. Schools over Stadiums is an organization working with the Nevada State Education Association who are planning to put a petition together which will stop the public funding that will pay for an Las Vegas A’s ballpark. Schools over Stadiums argues that money should be spent on education than funding a ballpark. Right now NSEA is looking for funding to cover contractors to go out and get the petitions signed. The estimated cost to run an anti public ballpark funding campaign would run nearly $2 million.

MLB podcast with Charlie O: Mets to honor Big Sexy with retirement send off on Aug 26 at Citi Field; Nats Strasburg still hurting this time nerve damage; plus more

Former New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon throws out the first ball on the seventh anniversary of his home run. Colon will be honored celebrating his retirement by the Mets when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Aug 26, 2023 at Citi Field. (AP file photo)

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Bartolo Colon the former Oakland A’s and New York Mets pitcher will get a great send off at Citi Field on Aug 26th. Colon 50 who retired in 2018 finally will get his well deserved retirement party. Colon pitched for 21 years and on 11 MLB teams.

#2 He came riding high and with all the attributes and predictions of being a big league superstar and someone who could nothing short of making the Hall of Fame ballot with the talent he brought as a big league pitcher. Stephen Strasburg was a 2019 World Series MVP and signed a seven year $245 million contract with the Washington Nationals since 2020 he’s pitched only eight times, two times in 2020 and has suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome in his pitching arm. It was reported that Strasburg could return soon but is still suffering severe nerve damage.

#3 Charlie O, the Los Angeles Dodgers Mookie Betts is doing it all and has been tabbed the “modern day Rickey Henderson” Betts whose in the leadoff role for Los Angeles is hitting .263, 57 hits, 45 runs, 15 home runs and 36 RBIs for this season. “It’s a pretty cool comparison, being compared to Rickey, but Rickey was a different breed,” said Betts.

#4 With the bases loaded for the Chicago White Sox in the bottom of the tenth inning the White Sox Tim Anderson at the plate and two outs with Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Jose Cisnero trying to work his way out of the inning Cisnero thought he got the signal to throw a sink when Tigers catcher Eric Haase called for a slider. The pitch didn’t sink and got away and hit home plate umpire Corey Blaser in the face mask knocking him to the ground. It was a live ball and it allowed the Sox Andrew Benintendi to score from third for the walk off wild pitch giving the White Sox the 2-1 win. Blaser is under observation and doctor’s care.

#5 Charlie O, the vote for relocating the Oakland A’s could come right down the owners vote during the week of Jun 13-15th. The A’s according to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will not be charged for a relocation fee. The other MLB owners have not objected at least to the media or sources about the A’s not having to pay a relocation fee. The A’s and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo have an agreement on the funding of the new ballpark for $1.5 billion contingent on the Nevada Legislature’s approval. To show you that the assembly is under pressure by residents mostly who oppose the new ballpark they’re haggling amongst each other on how to vote and the deadline is Mon Jun 5th in 24 hours to vote as the session is ending.

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1  How important is it now that the city of Oakland has dropped it’s lawsuit against the Oakland A’s regarding the sale of the Oakland Coliseum property?

#2 Will the dropping of the lawsuit clear the way for the A’s to build at Jack London Square?

#3 The Los Angeles Angels could very well be the next home for pitcher Gerrit Cole. Cole is from Orange County and the Halos are looking to contend in 2020.

#4 Stephen Stasburg could be a New York Yankee. The Angels and Padres have been mentioned in interests for Strasburg. The Nationals are trying to find a way to re-sign Strasburg.

#5 Madison Bumgarner’s name has been floated by the New York Yankees as someone they’d like to sign for the 2020 season. The Yankees consider Bumgarner a fit for their pitching staff.

Giants looking for a spark in D.C.

By Morris Phillips

August 12, 2013

According to Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy, the Giants’ bats are ice cold right now.

The temperature for first pitch at Nationals Park on Tuesday night in steamy Washington D.C. should be around 83 degrees.

Could this convergence of circumstances bring about a change of fortunes for the NL West’s last place club? Probably not.

After losing two of three to the Orioles at AT&T Park over the weekend, the Giants are 15 ½ games behind the first place Dodgers and thinking of next year. The lineups Bochy’s been running out with Roger Kieschnick getting a look and Jeff Franceour frequently featured aren’t fortune changers. Instead, they’re audition lineups as the veteran manager scours his 25-man roster for any signs of life.

A matchup of two teams that made the post-season in 2012 doesn’t offer the same snap that it did just a year ago. The Nationals are just three games under .500 but sit 14 games behind the first-place Braves in the NL East. Bryce Harper’s been terrific for the Nats, and Stephen Strasburg struggled to find his form, but the major theme out of Washington is that their offense is as bad as the Giants.

So on the surface Tuesday’s matchup between Madison Bumgarner and Gio Gonzalez might not allow the bats to break out. But if we watch, we’ll watch for that: any signs of life from the woeful Giants or the disappointing Nationals.

First pitch comes at 4:05pm.
