Cardinal triumph at Pauley Pavilion for first time in 15 years 74-59

For the first time in 15 years, Stanford has won a men’s basketball game at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

Tyrell Terry scored a career-high 24 points for the Cardinal in their 74-59 Pac-12 victory over UCLA Wednesday. It was Stanford’s first win over the Bruins at Pauley since 2003-04, and its first conference road win of the season.

Terry was 6 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers. He was also 8 of 10 at the free throw line.

Spencer Jones added 14 points for the Cardinal (15-2 overall, 4-0 Pac-12), which has won three straight conference games, and eight of their last nine.

Leading the Bruins was Jaime Jaquez Jr. with 15 points, followed by Jalen Hill with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Bruins (8-9, 1-3) are in the midst of their second three-game losing streak of the season.

UCLA had won 13 straight home games against Stanford since 2005-06.

After the Bruins closed to within one point early in the second half, Stanford went on a 12-2 run to go up 50-39.

The Cardinal’s Oscar da Silva – who was averaging 16.5 points – scored only six points, plagued by four personal fouls.

Stanford opened the game with an 18-9 run, connecting on 7 of 10 shots while the Bruins missed seven of their first 10 attempts.

But UCLA put together runs of 9-0 and 11-0 to take its first lead at 29-22. At one point during the 20-4 scoring run, the Bruins had seven different players score.

The Cardinal regrouped and forged an 11-2 run to end the first half leading 33-31.

Stanford shot 51 percent (24-47), including 8-17 on 3-pointers. UCLA made 21 of 53 field goals (39.6 percent) and was 5 of 16 behind the arc.

Stanford continues its road trip on Saturday, visiting Southern California.

Stanford continued its dominance over Washington State in Pac-12 men’s basketball on Saturday, as the Cardinal romped to an 88-62 win over the visiting Cougars at Maples Pavilion.

Freshman Tyrell Terry popped in a season-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds, as the Cardinal (14-2 overall, 3-0 Pac-12) beat WSU for seventh time in eight meetings. The Cougars have lost three of four games to open league play after a six-game nonconference winning streak.

Washington State last won at Stanford in 2011, and the Cougars’ losing streak against the Cardinal goes back to Jan. 31, 2015, when WSU edged Stanford 89-88 in Pullman, Wash.

Carlos da Silva added 15 points – all in the first half – and Isaac White scored 11 points while Bryce Wills chipped in with 10. Though da Silva was 7 of 8 from the field, he didn’t see much action in the second half due to foul trouble.

Isaac Bonton led the Cougars (10-7, 1-3) with 15 points; it was Bonton’s sixth straight game of double-figure scoring. Daron Henson was next for WSU with 12 points, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers, and Jeff Pollard pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

WSU’s CJ Elleby was held to single-digit scoring for the second time this season with a season-low six points. Elleby missed his first seven shots.

Stanford jumped to a 46-18 halftime lead, eventually building a 59-26 lead early in the second half. The 18 points allowed in the first half was the Cardinal’s second-best effort of the season, next to the 16 points allowed to Maryland-Eastern Shore in November.

The Cardinal hit the road on Wednesday, traveling to UCLA. Next Saturday, Washington State will retire Klay Thompson’s No. 1 jersey when UCLA visits Pullman. Thompson, a starter on three NBA championship teams with Golden State, is the Cougars’ second all-time scoring leader (1,756 points).

Davis leads Cardinal to win over Cal in Pac-12 opener 68-52

Stanford took advantage of a poor shooting night for California Thursday, as the Cardinal won their Pac-12 men’s basketball conference opener 68-52 over the Golden Bears at Maples Pavilion.

Cal (6-7 overall, 0-1 Pac-12) shot 32 percent (18 of 57) – including 4 of 15 from 3-point range. The Golden Bears lost despite having a 35-28 rebounding edge.

Forward Daejon Davis continued his strong season for Stanford (11-2 overall, 1-0 Pac-12), hitting 7 of 15 from the field, along with 3 of 6 3-pointers, for a game-high and season-high 20 points. He also had three steals, five assists and six rebounds.

Tyrell Terry was next in the Cardinal scoring column with 14 points, including 3 of 4 behind the arc. Jaden Delaire and Oscar da Silva each added eight points for Stanford.

The Cardinal made only two of its first 12 shots before making 11 of their next 19 attempts, a run that was capped by a Delaire 3-pointer with four seconds to play in the first half. Stanford led 32-21 at the break.

Defensively, the Cardinal held the Bears’ top two scorers – Matt Bradley and Kareem South – to a combined 2 of 17 floor shooting for eight points by the early stages of the second half. Bradley led Cal with 13 points.

One area of concern for Stanford is turnovers. The Cardinal have averaged 13.7 turnovers through their first nine games before committing 19 miscues in their previous four games.

The win snapped a streak of three losses in conference openers, and put Stanford back on the winning track after suffering a 72-56 home loss after winning its first eight games at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford has a week off before hosting Washington next Thursday.

Slow-starting Kansas heats up in second half, defeats Cardinal 72-56

No. 5-ranked Kansas paid a visit to Maples Pavilion on Sunday, and emerged with a 72-56 non-conference men’s basketball victory over Stanford.

Isaiah Moss had 17 bench points for the Jayhawks (10-2), and Udoka Azubuike pulled down 13 rebounds, as Kansas won despite turning the ball over 21 times.

Azubuike, a 7-feet, 270-pound center, had a rough day offensively, scoring only two points (0-5 on free throws) and committing five turnovers while playing much of the game in foul trouble.

Ochai Agbaji and Devon Dotson contributed 14 points apiece, as Kansas won its fourth straight meeting with the Cardinal. Stanford Coach Jerod Haase, a Kansas alum, said after the game that the series has concluded for now.

Oscar da Silva led the Cardinal (11-2) with 19 points.

The Jayhawks started out slow with their long-range shooting, eventually making 6 of 8 3-pointers in the second half. Kansas took an early 7-0 lead while the Cardinal missed its first 14 shots. Stanford didn’t score until da Silva sank two free throws at 12:11, and Isaac White made the Cardinal’s first basket at 8:12 of the first half.

Kansas led 28-18 at halftime.

Stanford shot only 22 percent in the first half, including 1 of 9 on 3-pointers. The Jayhawks outrebounded Stanford 44-25, while the Cardinal committed 19 turnovers.

The Cardinal are off until Thursday, Jan. 2, when they host California in their Pac-12 opener.

Cardinal uses big second half to upend USF 64-56

Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis each scored 18 points for Stanford Tuesday, as the Cardinal overcame the absence of injured point guard Tyrell Terry and slipped past San Francisco 64-56 in non-conference men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

Bryce Wills and Spencer Jones added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Cardinal (10-1), who trailed 23-18 at halftime. Jones, da Silva and Wills each had five rebounds; Davis added four assists.

Terry was held out of the Cardinal lineup due to what Stanford called “an upper body injury” sustained during the pregame shootaround. Afterward, Stanford personnel said they didn’t think the injury was serious.

Terry’s absence affected the Cardinal offense, which totaled only six assists while committing 19 turnovers. Stanford compensated for the lack of ballhandling by shooting 48 percent from the field while holding the Dons to 39 percent shooting.

Stanford outscored USF 46-32 in the second half. San Francisco averaged 84.6 points per game going into Tuesday’s contest.

Charles Minlend led the Dons (9-3) with 18 points, and Jamaree Bouyea added 15 points, while Minlend and Josh Kunen each grabbed seven of USF’s 29 rebounds.

The Dons are 1-2 against Pac-12 opponents this season. USF lost to Arizona State two weeks ago and earlier defeated California.

Next action for the Cardinal is on Saturday, when they face San Diego in the Al Attles Classic at Chase Center. The Dons play UC Davis on Saturday.
