Ducks roll past Cardinal in Pac-12 opener 35-14; Mills out due to positive Covid test

Oregon scored 28 unanswered points over nearly two quarters Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore., as the Ducks rolled over Stanford 35-14 in the Pac-12 football opener for both schools.

The Cardinal (0-1) were without starting quarterback Davis Mills, who was held out of the lineup after testing positive for COVID-19 and, according to the school, having to adhere to pandemic protocols.

Defensive end Trey LaBounty and wide receiver Connor Wedington were also missing from the Stanford lineup on Saturday due to COVID-19 protocols. Wedington tweeted that he tested negative, but was contact traced.

Jack West filled in for Mills and completed 13 of 19 passes for 154 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Austin Jones led the Cardinal rushers with 100 yards on 20 attempts and both Stanford touchdowns. Nathaniel Peat added 93 rushing yards on six carries.

Michael Wilson caught four of West’s passes for 35 yards, while Brycen Tremayne and Simi Fehoko each caught three passes for Stanford.

Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough completed 17 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Shough also carried 11 times for 85 rushing yards and a TD.

CJ Verdell was the top rusher for Oregon, finishing with 105 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Travis Dye ran six times for 78 yards.

Shough’s top targets were Johnny Johnson III and DJ Johnson. Johnny Johnson caught four passes for 60 yards and DJ Johnson snared five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Stanford scored first on Jones’ 4-yard TD run at 4:13 of the first quarter. From there, it was all Oregon (1-0).

The Ducks tied the game at 7-7 with 1:36 left on Verdell’s 10-yard touchdown run. Oregon surged ahead to stay late in the second quarter, when DJ Johnson caught a 5-yard TD pass from Shough.

Rushing touchdowns in the third quarter by Dye (14 yards) and Shough (9 yards) put the Ducks up 28-7. Jones’ 2-yard scoring run cut Stanford’s deficit to 28-14 at 8:27 of the fourth quarter, but Oregon’s Cyrus Habibi-Liko scored on a 4-yard run, extending the Ducks’ lead to 21 points with 4:12 left.

Stanford returns home next Saturday to host Colorado (1-0). Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.

#5 Oregon’s quarterback Tyler Shough is the probable starter against the Cardinal Saturday. Shough who was a red shirt is said to be in the lead for the starting quarterback job while Anthony Brown who was at Boston College transferred over to the Ducks is also competing for the quarterback job.

#1 Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garbers was asked how much it means to him to quarterback against his younger brother Ethan quarterback for the Washington Huskies on Nov 7th at Berkeley.

#2 Garbers did say if it’s safe he would be excited to see players parent but his own parents there for the game against his brother Ethan and the Huskies. Just to have family there Garbers said would be extra special.

#3 Right now fans are banned from Pac 12 games but last September 24th the Pac 12 Conference board voted for student athlete familes to be able to attend Pac 12 games.

#4 Stanford Cardinal quarterback David Mills family who live in Georgia got to see Mills on the last day of last season in Central Florida. Mills says his family is ready to travel see Mills for home games at Stanford this season family and fans permitted.

#1 The Pac 12 took the Big 10’s lead and have scheduled only conference games only.  The decision is not only for the football program but it extends to other college sports as well.

#2 Cal reported that 47 new cases of Cornoavirus has spread these cases were confirmed just last week  when the Cal Greek Club met and reported that they were infected. Which confirms that classes won’t be held on campus this fall.

#3 At the beginning of the crisis back in March there were 23 reported cases of Covid-19 on  the Cal campus but since the re-opening at the end of last May these 47 new cases and the spiking of the epidemic have the Cal campus scrambling not to have classes at the campus.

#4 Last week Stanford canceled 11 athletic programs and as SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey stated he highly doubts their will be a football season in the SEC and that extends to the Pac 12.

#5 Not only is Stanford cutting sports programs they reported that their starting to have budget problems. Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir shared his concerns stating that even before the pandemic Stanford was looking at a $12 million projected deficit for 2021.

#1 Jerry how much of an advantage was it for the Cal Bears (14-18) to beat the Stanford Cardinal (20-12) by 12 points in front of a practically empty arena with no screaming fans at the Pac 12 Tournament does that give a team an advantage to focus more?

#2 What does that say about the Cardinal defense who were dominated in the first half by the Bears 30-20?

#3 It seems like Stanford couldn’t get any offense going the second half was a half of catch up they fell behind the Bears 33-31.

Stanford falls in Pac-12 tourney, on the Big Dance bubble

After being dispatched in the opening round of the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament in Las Vegas, Stanford now plays the waiting game to see where it continues its season.

California knocked off the Cardinal 63-51 and advances to the second round. With the win, the Golden Bears took the season series; the teams split their conference matchups.

Stanford (20-12) is a bubble team for the NCAA tournament and could possibly be selected for the National Invitation Tournament. The Cardinal are trying to reach the Big Dance for the first time since 2014.

In what might have been the last game either team would play in front of a crowd this season, the contest went on, despite concerns about the coronavirus situation.

Prior to the game, the Pac-12 released a statement saying a decision was made to “only have essential staff, TV network partners, credentialed media, and limited family and friends in attendance” for the remainder of the tournament.

Earlier on Wednesday, the NCAA announced that its men’s and women’s tournaments would be played with similar stipulations.

Stanford trailed 30-20 at the half and never got much closer in the second half, as the Cardinal was held to 32.1 percent field shooting (17 of 53, 5 of 12 3-point), and 12 of 18 at the free throw line.

Daejon Davis topped the Stanford scoring column with 16 points, followed by Bryce Wills with 10. Tyrell Terry and Spencer Jones each score six points. Oscar da Silva, a first team all-Pac-12 selection, was held to 2 of 11 field goal shooting, but led the Cardinal with seven rebounds.

Payton Pritchard poured in a game-high 29 points for Oregon Saturday, as the No. 13-ranked Ducks defeated Stanford 80-67 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene in the Pac-12 regular season men’s basketball finale for both schools.

The Ducks (24-7 overall, 13-5 Pac-12) won the conference title and clinched the No. 1-seed in next week’s conference tournament. Oregon had clinched a share of the Pac-12 title earlier on Saturday when Southern California defeated UCLA. It’s the Ducks’ seventh league championship and third in the last five years.

Oscar da Silva led the Cardinal with 18 points and seven rebounds to go with an assist, a steal and a block. Spencer Davis was 4 of 5 from 3[point range and finished with 15 points. Daejon Davis scored 13 points, dished out seven assists and collected two steals, and Bryce Wills added 10 points.

The Cardinal shot 47.1 percent from the field (24 of 51, 7 of 16 3-point).

Helping out Pritchard was Anthony Mathis with 14 points and Will Richardson with 12. Shakur Juiston pulled down nine rebounds, as Oregon outrebounded the Cardinal 28-20.

The Ducks shot 56.9 percent (29 of 51, 10 of 19 3-point).

Oregon extended its five-point halftime lead to 40-31 early in the second half. A Pritchard 3-pointer sparked a 10-point run as the Ducks built their biggest lead at 57-42

The Cardinal battled back with a seven-point run, cutting Oregon’s lead to 57-49. Pritchard hit another 3, followed by a layup to build the Ducks’ lead to 62-49 with 6:38 to play.

Stanford (20-11, 9-9) plays Bay Area rival California Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. Oregon meets the Oregon State-Utah winner in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Record-setting night for Tinkle lifts Beavers past Cardinal 68-65

A record-setting night for Oregon State forward Tres Tinkle sparked the Beavers past Stanford 68-65 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

With the victory, Oregon State (16-13 overall, 6-11 Pac-12) is assured of a winning season, and completed a sweep of the Cardinal (20-10, 9-8) while snapping Stanford’s four-game winning streak.

Tinkle broke the OSU all-time scoring record with a game-high 23 points. He passed Gary Payton, who scored 2,172 points for the Beavers. Tinkle has scored 2,190 points (seventh in Pac-12 history) and has one game left to play.

In addition, Tinkle was 6 of 6 from the free throw line in the final 1:25 as the Beavers held on after rallying from a 30-26 deficit in the final two minutes.

Etan Thompson was next on the Beaver scoring list with 15 and Zach Reichle added 10. Thompson also had five rebounds and five assists, a steal and a block. Kylor Kelley contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the Beavers,

Bryce Wills led a balanced Cardinal attack with 16 points, followed by Oscar da Silva with 14, Tyrell Terry with 13, Daejon Davis with 10 and Jaiden Delaire with nine.

Terry also had 10 rebounds and five assists; Davis had five boards and three steals.

Oregon State shot 43.8 percent from the field (21 of 48, 8 of 20 3-pointers), while the Cardinal finished with a 44.6 shooting percentage (3 of 15 behind the arc).

The Beavers led 34-32 at halftime, and forged a 9-2 run to open the second half.

A Terry jumper put Stanford up 65-64 with 33 seconds to play. Two free throws by Tinkle put Oregon State back ahead at 66-65 with 17.6 left.

The Cardinal called a time out after advancing the ball to midcourt with 3.1 seconds remaining. Isaac White’s 3-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer.

Stanford needs a win at No. 13 Oregon on Saturday to help make its case for an NCAA tournament bid. The Cardinal haven’t played in the Big Dance since 2014.

On the Stanford basketball with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry talk about the Stanford Cardinal’s (20-9) Bryce Wills who scored 19 points on a sore ankle in the Cardinal win over the No.21 school in the country Colorado (21-9) 72-64.

#2 Wills was a game time decision to start the game and that decision helped the Cardinal get the eight point win past the Buffaloes last Sunday.

#3 Stanford head coach Jerod Haase said that it was a questionable decision to play Wills all the way through the game.

#4 Wills scored ten straight points after he got Stanford a 65-52 lead with 8:13 remaining in the game.

#5 The Cardinal are next up at Oregon State (15-13) for a 6pm tip Jerry sets this game up for us.
