Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer became the career coaching wins record holder for NCAA Division I women’s basketball Tuesday, when the Cardinal defeated Pacific 104-61 in Stockton.

It was win No, 1,099 for VanDerveer, passing legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt’s previous record of 1,098. VanDerveer received video congratulations from Billie Jean King, Steve Kerr, John Elway and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the ESPN telecast after the record-setting victory.

VanDerveer, 67, could have reached the milestone sooner if not for game cancellations and postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, VanDerveer’s win totals include two seasons at Idaho and five at Ohio State before taking over the Stanford program in 1985.

Her career win-loss record in 1,099-253 (.813), including NCAA D-I championships in 1990 and 1992. VanDerveer has led her teams to the NCAA tournament 31 times out of 34. She is a four-time national coach of the year and a 15-time Pac-12 coach of the year.

In 1996, VanDerveer took a year off from Stanford to coach the Olympic women’s basketball team to an 8-0 record and the gold medal. Thirty of VanDerveer’s Stanford players have played in the WNBA, 12 of them first-round draft picks, including Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Overall, VanDerveer tralls only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke for most D-I coaching victories. Coach K has 1,159 as of Tuesday.

On the women’s victory list, Geno Auriemma of Connecticut is next at 1,092.

Stanford, behind Oscar da Silva’s career-high 32 points, defeated Cal State Northridge 82-71 Tuesday in non-conference men’s basketball at Northridge, Calif.

Da Silva also pulled down nine rebounds, was 9 of 11 from the field, and sank all 14 of his free throws. It was the first time a Cardinal scored 30 points in a game since KZ Okpala did it on Feb. 3, 2019, against California.

Da Silva, who was averaging 17.3 points per game, scored 17 of the Cardinal’s 36 first-half points.

Ziaire Williams scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Cardinal (3-2), followed by Noah Taitz with 12 points and Spencer Jones with 10.

CSUN (3-2) was led by Lance Coleman III, who sank six 3-pointers and scored 20 points. TJ Starks was next for the Matadors with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.

Stanford, which held a 37- rebounding edge, has temporarily relocated out of Santa Clara County until Dec. 21 due to COVID-19 restrictions on practices and events.

On Saturday, the Cardinal open Pac-12 play against Arizona at Santa Cruz. CSUN, meanwhile, will face California.

The coronavirus pandemic strikes college sports again, as it has forced the postponement of Stanford’s scheduled men’s basketball game against Southern California.

USC announced in a statement that a confirmed case of COVID-19 has prompted the Trojans men’s basketball program to pause its team activities. This action forced USC to postpone its home game at Galen Center against Stanford less than three hours before tipoff.

The decision was made under the Pac-12’s basketball policy. The Trojans did not have the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for the game due to COVID-19 protocol.

The statement added that the Pac-12 Conference will work with both schools to find a date to reschedule the contest.

Jet Toner booted a 39-yard field goal with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter, giving Stanford 27-24 Pac-12 football win over Oregon State in its regular season finale at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

Beavers quarterback Chance Nolan was leading OSU upfield when the Cardinal’s Gabe Reid punched the ball as Nolan was falling and Stanford recovered at its own 25-yard line with 23 seconds remaining.

Oregon State kicker Everett Hayes kicked a 26-yard field goal at 7:37 of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 24-24.

The see-saw battle had three lead changes. One of them occurred at 13:34 of the fourth quarter when Davis Mills’ 6-yard touchdown run gave Stanford a 24-21 lead. In the third quarter, the Beavers took a 21-16 lead when Nolan connected with Tyjon Lindsey for a 30-yard TD.

Two minutes into the second half, the Cardinal (3-2) took its first lead of the game on a 1-yard plunge by Davis Mills.

Oregon State (2-4) opened the scoring at 10:30 of the first quarter on Nolan’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Lindsey. Four minutes later, the Cardinal responded with a 12-yard scoring pass from Mills to Tucker Fisk, but a 2-point conversion pass was incomplete, and the Beavers led 7-6.

The Beavers increased their lead to 14-6 on Nolan’s 8-yard TD pass to Zeriah Beeson at 12:42 of the second quarter. Toner’s 47-yard field goal with 1:27 left in the half pulled Stanford to within 14-9.

Austin Jones gained 126 rushing yards on 22 carries for Stanford, while Mills completed 21 of 29 passes for 292 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, but was sacked three times. Simi Fehoko led Cardinal receivers with six receptions for 110 yards.

Nolan completed 17 of 30 passes for 221 yards and three touchdown and no interceptions. Jermar Jefferson was the Beavers’ leading rusher with 80 yards on 18 carries. Tre’Shaun Harrison caught five passes for 91 yards.

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal women’s (3-0)  game for Friday night vs. UC Davis (1-0) has been canceled due to coronavirus protocols. Santa Clara County does not allow sports of any kind to be played there until early January.

#2 Stanford women’s head coach Tara VanDerveer’s who is one game away from tying the late former Tennessee Vol’s head coach Pat Summitt’s record for wins could have come Friday. As a result Stanford will play at Cal on Sunday and VanDerveer with a win over Cal could tie Summitt’s record.

#3 The Stanford Cardinal (2-2) in football win over the Washington Huskies (3-1) last Sat Dec 5th was huge it evened the Cardinal win loss record at 2-2  and it was the Cardinal’s second straight win 31-26.

#4 Stanford quarterback Davis Mills threw for 252 yards and one touchdown, running back Austin Jones carried twice for two touchdowns and running back Nathaniel Peat ran for one touchdown in the Stanford victory.

#5 Jerry, the Cardinal close out the season against Oregon State (2-3), the last time these two teams met it was last season as it will be the two clubs first meeting of 2020. The Beavers in their last game lost to the Utah Utes (1-2) in a close game 30-24 and the Beavers upset the Oregon Ducks (3-2) on Nov 27th 41-38 could you see this one being as close as the Big Game was when they edged out Cal by just one point?

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal shocks the NCAA world with huge upset over Oregon

In the first half of the game the Cal Bears receiver Makai Polk (17) gets caught from behind from the Oregon Ducks cornerback Mykael Wright (AP News photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 This had to be the shock of the NCAA on Saturday as Cal (1-3) a team considered a doormat in the Pac 12 a team no one would consider won their first game against the Pac 12’s best the Oregon Ducks (3-2).

#2 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox certainly relied on his defense after getting that lead in the first half and held onto it. They had Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough scrambling throughout the second half and he simply couldn’t convert  as the Bears shut the Ducks out in the second half.

#3 Morris Shough threw for 231 yards and a touchdown in that second half you can bet the Ducks coaching staff were trying to rearrange their playbook but would you say in the loss to the Oregon State Beavers (2-2) that film revealed a lot of holes that Cal could have learned from?

#4 For Cal quarterback Chase Garbers an evening he won’t forget a touchdown for Cal in each of the first three quarters good enough for the 21-17 win and Cal’s first win of the season. Garbers threw for 183 yards and a touchdown. He got touchdown help from running back Bradrick Shaw, receiver Nicco Remigio and Garbers carried one in himself.

#5 Cal now heads to Pullman to face the Washington State Cougars (1-1) for the final game of the regular season. If the Bears who just lost to the Stanford Cardinal (2-2) on Sat Nov 28th in the Big Game by a blocked field goal had won that game no telling what that would have done for their post season chances after a big win like this against Oregon.

#6 Morris the Cal men’s basketball game wasn’t even close on Sunday night at UCLA the Golden Bears were blown out at Pauley Pavilion 76-56. Cal head coach Mark Fox said that the Bruins were ahead every step of the way.

#7 Makale Foreman was one of two players who did not travel to the Southland on Saturday. Foreman and the unnamed player did eventually make to Pauley Pavilion but didn’t make practice on Saturday and the pre-game walk through. How much did that impact the results of their game against the Bruins.

#8 Fox said that the Bruins shot for 70% and the Cal defense wasn’t where they wanted them to be and the offense didn’t play with authority.

Stanford held off a late Washington surge Saturday and defeated the Huskies 31-26 in Pac-12 football at Husky Stadium in Seattle, using a dominant ground game to do it.

Austin Jones led the Cardinal charge with 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. Nathaniel Peat added 44 yards and a TD on seven attempts.

Quarterback David Mills threw for 252 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, completing 20 of 30 passes.

The Cardinal spent most of the week in Seattle after a Santa Clara County health order prohibited games and practices for contact sports on Monday. Stanford practiced at Washington’s indoor facility and at local high schools through the week, and held its Friday walkthrough at a public park.

Stanford (2-2) got off to a fast start, finding the end zone on its first three possessions. Jeff Toner’s 42-yard field goal put the Cardinal up 24-3 at halftime.

Washington (3-1) nearly duplicated its second-half comeback of last week against Utah. Sean McGrew scored from 6 yards out and quarterback Dylan Morris snuck over from the 1 pulling the Huskies to within 31-16. In between, Mills connected with Scooter Harrington on a 3-yard TD pass.

McGrew scored on a 2-yard run at 11:49 of the fourth quarter. The Huskies nearly had a fourth TD after recovering a Jones fumble at the Stanford 10-yard line. But two holding penalties moved UW back enough for the Huskies to settle for a 45-yard field goal by Peyton Henry.

The Cardinal was able to preserve a 31-26 lead by running out the clock with a drive that started at their own 12 with 7:47 remaining. A key catch on 4th-and-11 by Simi Fehoko and three first-down runs by Jones helped Stanford maintain possession.

Morris completed 15 of 23 passes for 254 yards, with no touchowns or interceptions. McGrew was the Huskies’ top ground gainer with 65 yards on 16 carries.

Next week, the Cardinal travel to Corvallis, Ore., to face Oregon State, a game originally slated to be played at The Farm.

Indiana rebounded from a lackluster semifinal loss and defeated Stanford 79-63 in the third-place game of the relocated Maui Invitational men’s basketball tournament, held this year in Asheville, N.C.

Sophomore Trayce Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers (3-1) with a career-high 31 points. He was 10-of-16 from the field and 11-of-14 at the free throw line, thanks to Stanford fouling him 11 times.

Race Thompson scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds for Indiana, Armaan Franklin scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and five assists, while holding Stanford freshman Ziaire Williams to four points.

Williams was 1-for-10 shooting, including 0-for-5 on 3-pointers, and fouled out with 6:06 remaining.

Daejon Davis and Oscar da Silva led Stanford (1-2) with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The Cardinal shot 36 percent from the field, including 5-of-20 behind the arc for the second straight day.

The Hoosiers never trailed after the opening minute and led 31-26 at halftime, but an early second half run gave iU a double-digit lead. Stanford cut that lead to four at 43-39, but a six-point spurt sparked by back-to-back 3’s by Rob Phinisee put Indiana up 49-41 at 12:09 of the second half.

In the next couple of minutes, Phinisee and teammate Trey Galloway each picked up their fourth personal foul. But Jackson-Davis scored 10 of Indiana’s next 11 points, helping the Hoosiers build a 15-point lead with 6:04 to play.

Stanford’s next two scheduled games against Cal Poly and Loyola Marymount are cancelled. The Cardinal’s next game is on Sunday, Dec. 13, in Los Angeles against USC.

The 14th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used a driving hoop from Leaky Black with 1:02 to play – along with a late free throw – to seal a 67-63 win over Stanford Tuesday in the relocated Maui Invitational semifinals, played in Asheville, N.C.

Freshman Caleb Love led UNC (3-0) with 16 points.

North Carolina won the game despite committing 24 turnovers, which the Cardinal converted into 22 points. Neither team led by more than three points over the last 6 ½ minutes until Black’s clutch free throw with 5.5 seconds remaining.

The Cardinal (1-1) shot 39 percent from the field, including 5 of 20 from behind the arc – 1 of 11 in the second half. Daejon Davis was the top scorer for Stanford with 18 points, followed by Oscar da Silva with 13 points and Ziaire Williams with 10.

North Carolina shot 50 percent in the second half, and outrebounded the Cardinal 43-23. UNC used that rebounding edge to score 18 second-chance points.

The game featured a reunion for UNC coach Roy Williams and Stanford coach Jerod Haase, who played and coached for Williams at Kansas. Haase beat his mentor years ago while coaching Alabama-Birmingham, but has lost the last such meetings.

On Wednesday, North Carolina moves on to face No. 17 Texas in the championship game, and Stanford meets Indiana for third place.
