Ziaire Williams earned Stanford men’s basketball’s first triple-double in 13 years on Thursday, as the Cardinal defeated Washington 91-75 in a home-away-from-home game played in Santa Cruz due to Santa Clara County enforced COVID-19 restrictions.

Williams, a freshman, scored 12 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out 10 assists. It was the second triple-double in Stanford men’s basketball history, and the first since Brook Lopez earned one in 2007.

Williams opened the night with a blocked shot, a rebound on the Huskies’ second shot, and an assist on Spencer Jones’s layup that sparked a 12-0 run to open the game for Stanford (7-3 overall, 3-1 Pac-12).

Early in the first half, Washington (1-8, 0-4) pulled to within 14-5 on a 3-pointer by Quade Green. Eighteen seconds later, Brandon Angel hit a 3 for Stanford, and the Cardinal lead remained in double digits for the rest of the game.

Oscar da Silva scored 17 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds, recording his second straight double-double. Jones led the Cardinal with 18 points, including four 3s.

Stanford made 34 of 66 from the field (52 percent) and held a commanding 47-31 rebounding edge. The Cardinal were without injured starters Daejon Davis (leg) and Bryce Wills (knee).

Marcus Tsohonis led Washington with 24 points – 19 in the second half. Green and Jamal Bey each added 15 points for the Huskies.

Up next, the Cardinal host Washington State on Saturday, again in Santa Cruz.

Oscar da Silva had a huge all-around game for Stanford on Monday. His 31 points, 10 rebounds and four assists sparked the Cardinal to an 81-71 Pac-12 men’s basketball win over Oregon State.

The game was rescheduled from last Thursday due to COVID-19 issues involving the Beavers’ program.

Da Silva shot 11 of 16 from the field while earning his eighth career double-double. Jaiden Delaire added 19 points and nine rebounds and was 7 of 9 at the free throw line, as the Cardinal (6-3 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) sank 73 percent of its 30 attempts.

Freshman reserve Michael O’Connell replaced the injured Bryce Wills early in the game and finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

A three-point play by da Silva capped a 12-2 run to open the second half and give Stanford a 10-point lead. OSU led by two points twice midway through the second half, but the Cardinal had a 10-point run – with da Silva and Delaire scoring all of the points – and took a 77-64 lead with 2:11 to play.

Jarod Lucas was Oregon State’s top scorer with 22 points while hitting five 3-pointers. Gianni Hunt added a career-high 17 points, including four 3s, and Ethan Thompson added 10 points for the Beavers (5-4, 2-1).

Stanford Extends Winning Streak Beating Bakersfield 63-50 in Santa Cruz

By Barbara Mason

Monday night the Stanford Cardinal were looking for a win to add to their three game winning streak as they took on the Bakersfield Roadrunners. The Cardinal are scoring an average of 74.3 points per game while the Roadrunners are close with an average of 72.8 points. Bakersfield expected to lean on Shaun William who is averaging 17 points a game while the Cardinals were looking to Oscar da Silva who comes into this game with a 20.3 average per game. They also have Dejon Davis and Ziaire Willams both double-digit scorers.

A predicted comfortable home victory came to be as the Cardinal dismissed the Roadrunners. The Cardinal are a legitimate Pac 12 contender and they lived up to that in this game. The Roadrunners struggle when they play above average teams and this game proved no different.

The final score was 63-50 as Stanford won both halves. The Cardinals dominated in the first half 30-22 and 33-28 in the second half, a more competitive half for the Roadrunners. Stanford got some nice points from Ziaire Williams with 17, Bryce Wills with 14 and Oscar da Silva with 10. It was a nice game for da Silva although it did break his three game stretch of scoring 20-plus points per game.

Midway through the first half the Cards took the lead for good and never looked back. It was a solid performance by the Stanford Cardinals extending their winning streak to four games.

The Cards are on a roll after beating the Arizona Wildcats Saturday night snapping a 20 game losing steak to the Wildcats in a wild 78-75 win. Stanford will be looking to extend their winning streak to five in their next game. The Cardinals will resume Pac-12 play on December 31 taking on Oregon State in Oregon.

Stanford won its home-away-from-home Pac-12 men’s basketball contest 78-75 over Arizona on Saturday. The game was played in Santa Cruz at Kaiser Permanente Arena, the home of the Golden State Warriors’ G-League team – seating capacity of 2,500.

This was the first time a Wildcat team coached by Sean Miller ever lost to Stanford, snapping a 19-game Stanford losing streak to the U of A and a 20-game losing streak overall.

It was the Cardinal’s first win over Arizona since Jan. 4, 2009.

Arizona (5-1) lost despite an outstanding night for Jemarl Baker, who scored 29 points, including 8 of 13 3-pointers – seven of them in the second half.

Stanford (4-2) led 30-23 at halftime while holding the Wildcats to under 30 percent shooting. U of A cut the Cardinal’s lead to 41-40 on a three-point play by Azuolas Tubelis with 13:51 to play in the second half.

But Ziaire Williams with a three-point play and Jordan Brown canned a 3-pointer for Stanford to stop the U of A rally. A Noah Taitz 3-pointer put the Cardinal up 59-53 with eight minutes left.

Arizona pulled to within 68-66 on a 3 by Baker and an Ira Lee basket at the 4-minute mark. The Wildcats took a 69-68 lead on Baker’s sixth 3. Oscar da Silva made a pair of technical free throws after a foul by Christin Koloko.

Arizona regained the lead at 72-70 on Baker’s seventh trey before Spencer Jones hit a pair of 3s that gave Stanford a 76-72 lead. Baker’s eighth 3 made it 76-75.

An offensive foul and two missed free throws by Akinjo over the final seven seconds allowed Stanford to maintain its lead. Da Silva a pair of free throws in the final five seconds.

Da Silva led the Cardinal with 21 points.

The game was played in Santa Cruz due to a Santa Clara County health order prohibiting games or practices at all levels until Monday.
