Arizona State holds off late Cardinal rally, wins 79-75

Arizona State held off a gallant effort by Stanford on Saturday, and the Sun Devils won 79-75 in Pac-12 men’s basketball played at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Ariz.

It was the second consecutive win for the struggling Sun Devils (6-8 overall, 3-5 Pac-12), and their first sweep in league play since defeating Oregon and Oregon State at home late last season.

The Cardinal (10-6 overall, 6-4 Pac-12) led 73-69 with 2:58 to play when ASU guard Joshua Christopher sank a 3-pointer. After a defensive stop, Arizona State took a 74-73 lead on a pair of Kimani Lawrence free throws at 1:46.

Michael O’Connell’s floating jumper put the Cardinal back in front at 75-74, but Lawrence put back an offensive rebound which was goaltended, and was fouled. He hit the free throw and ASU went back ahead 77-75.

Remy Martin was fouled after getting a steal, but the ASU point guard missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and the Cardinal had one more possession with eight seconds left. The Sun Devils defense forced a turnover, Alonzo Verge Jr. made a pair of free throws with 0.7 seconds left.

The Sun Devils forced Stanford into 20 turnovers – 13 in the first half. The Cardinal, meanwhile made 31 of 34 free throws to keep the game close. Stanford outrebounded ASU 34-24.

Jaiden Delaire led Stanford with 21 points, and Oscar da Silva finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Martin was ASU’s top scorer with 23 points, followed by Christopher with 15 points and 12 points each from Marcus Bagley and Jalen Graham.

Stanford has a busy week ahead. The Cardinal host USC at Maples Pavilion on Tuesday, travel to Berkeley to face California on Thursday, and host the Golden Bears on Sunday, Feb. 7.

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael final moments of the game on Thursday night the Arizona Sun Devils (5-8) pulled far enough away in the second half to grab a win 72-68 win away from the Cal Bears (7-11).

#2 After getting crushed Monday night by the Arizona Wildcats 80-67 the Sun Devils were out for some revenge and they had both offense and defense working against Cal in the second half after getting eclipsed by one point by Cal in the first half.

#3 One positive thing that came out of the game was that guard Matt Bradley has found his shot and led Cal with 26 points.

#4 The only other player for Cal who was in double figures was Andre Kelly who finished up with 16 points, how tough has it got to be for Cal head coach Mark Fox to get the rest of the offense to find the basket in a game like this?

#5 Cal’s task doesn’t get any easier they face the Arizona Wildcats (12-4) who just came off a Thursday night loss in Tucson to the Stanford Cardinal (10-5) 73-64 there is very little doubt that the Wildcats will be also taking their frustrations out on the Bears on Saturday afternoon.

Stanford uses late rally to defeat Arizona 73-64

Stanford rallied late to defeat Arizona 73-64 on Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball in Tucson, Ariz. The win marked Stanford’s first victory at McKale Center – and the first sweep of the Wildcats – since 2008.

Jaiden Delaire led the Cardinal (10-5 overall, 6-3 Pac-12) with 21 points, hitting 7 of 12 field goals and a 3-pointer. While tying his career high in scoring, Delaire scored 14 points in the second half.

Oscar da Silva was next with 17 points, Michael O’Connell scored 14 points and had four assists, and Spencer Jones added 10 points – including two 3s – and a team-high six rebounds.

Stanford outshot the Wildcats 49 percent to 41 percent, as Arizona saw a three-game win streak snapped while losing at home for the third time this season. The Cardinal outscored Arizona 34-14 in the paint.

Delaire, Jones and da Silva combined for 19 points in a 20-8 Cardinal run late in the game to pull away from Arizona.

Stanford made 7 of 9 of its field goals down the stretch, while the Wildcats were held to 2 of 12.

James Akinjo was the Wildcats’ top scorer with 17 points along with six assists, followed by Terrell Brown Jr. with 13, and Dalen Terry and Bennedict Mathurin with 10 pointd each. Arizona (12-4, 6-4) outrebounded the Cardinal 32-30.

Stanford’s southwest road trip continues Saturday, when the Cardinal visit Arizona State.

Cardinal reschedule games with USC

Stanford men’s basketball’s previously postponed contests with Southern California have been rescheduled for Feb.2 at Maples Pavilion and Feb. 22 in Los Angeles at Galen Center.

According to Stanford Athletics, “the change follows Santa Clara County’s updated Directive for Collegiate and Professional Sports, which allows for the resumption of training and competition involving contact, close proximity and equipment sharing – both indoors and outdoors – on Stanford’s campus.”

The game against USC on Feb. 2 will be Stanford’s first game on its home court this season. It’s been 338 days since its last game at Maples Pavilion on March 1, 2020.

Cardinal use last-second shot by da Silva to slip past UCLA in OT 73-72

UCLA thought it had secured an overtime win over Stanford on Saturday when Tyger Campbell converted a three-point play with five seconds left in overtime.

With no time outs, the Cardinal used those five seconds efficiently, culminating in a game-winning layup by Oscar da Silva that gave Stanford a 73-72 Pac 12 men’s basketball victory at its home-away-from-home in Santa Clara before a national television audience.

It was the Bruins’ first conference loss of the season, and it came after UCLA (12-3 overall, 8-1 Pac-12) took a 72-71 lead on Campbell’s layup-plus-1. Stanford moved the ball upcourt with no time outs, and after the Bruins’ Jalen Hill swatted a 3-point attempt by Jaiden Delaire out of bounds near the basket, 0.8 seconds remained.

On the inbound play, no one sealed off da Silva, who sliced through the lane unobstructed, took Michael O’Connell’s pass and converted a layup with 0.1 seconds showing.

Stanford and UCLA each had a chance to win in regulation. Da Silva missed a layup with 22 seconds left, and Campbell missed a jump shot from the left elbow.

Da Silva – Stanford’s leading scorer – finished with 26 points. The Cardinal (9-5, 5-3) played without starters Ziaire Williams, Daejon Davis and Bryce Wills. Dalaire added 19 points, including a steal-and-dunk with 1:39 to play.

Johnny Juzang, a transfer from Kentucky, led UCLA with 27 points, including the Bruins’ final 16 points of the first half. Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 14 points.

Stanford remains undefeated in five games at Kaiser Permanente Arena, home of the Golden State Warriors’ G-League team. The Cardinal are still unable to play at Maples Pavilion due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Cardinal hit the road for their next four games – at Arizona on Thursday and at Arizona State next Saturday; then at USC on Feb. 2 and at California on Feb. 4.

Cardinal, Trojans postpone Pac-12 contest

For the second time in its conference schedule this season, Stanford had to postpone a men’s basketball game.

The Cardinal’s Jan. 21 Pac-12 game against Southern California, scheduled to be played in Santa Cruz, was postponed due to a COVID-19 issue within the USC program.

The Pac-12 said it would work with both Stanford and USC to find a mutually agreeable date to reschedule the game.

The Cardinal (8-5 overall, 4-3 Pac-12) continue their season on Saturday against UCLA at Santa Cruz in a game to be televised by Fox. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. Pacific.

#1 Jerry two tough loses on the road in Buffalo (11-3) and in Utah (5-6) for the Stanford Cardinal (8-5) men’s team who now 6th in the Pac 12 how much did those two loses shave off their post season chances last week.

#2 Let’s take a look at last Thu Jan 14th’s game in Utah. The Cardinal were outmatched in both the first half 34-25 in the second half 45-40 as the Cardinal got out scored by the Utes 79-65.

#3 In Colorado on Sat Jan 16th the Buffaloes came out hitting baskets and in the first half came away with a 40-26 lead for the second half while the Cardinal defense improved and the Cardinal came close 38-37 it wasn’t enough as the Stanford took a 77-64, 13 point loss.

#4 Jerry, Oscar da Silva was doing a lot of the heavy lifting on Saturday leading the Cardinal in scoring with 22 points. da Silva no doubt has made the difference in some of the Cardinal victories this season.

#5 The USC Trojans (11-2) are at Stanford today for a 2:00pm tip off. The Trojans had a six game win streak going into Oregon State (6-5) on Tuesday night. They’ve been getting some great scoring help from Isaiah and Evan Mobley. Taking a look at the Trojans how do you see today’s match up in Santa Cruz for Cardinal.

Balanced Buffaloes attack sinks Cardinal 77-64

Stanford wound up 0 for 2 on its Rocky Mountain Pac-12 men’s basketball road trip, following a 77-64 loss to Colorado Saturday at Boulder.

McKinley Wright IV led the Buffaloes’ balanced attack with 14 points and eight assists, with Evan Battey scoring 13 points to go with 12 rebounds. Jabari Walker and Jeriah Horne added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Colorado, which is 5-0 at home this season.

CU freshman Tristan da Silva – younger brother of the Cardinal’s Oscar da Silva – hit his first career 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer.

The Buffaloes (11-3 overall, 5-2 Pac-12) had nine of their players in the scoring column in the first half. Stanford never got to within eight points in the entire second half.

Oscar da Silva led Stanford with a game-high 22 points along with 12 rebounds, his fourth double-double in five games. Ziaire Williams was next for the Cardinal with 17 points and five rebounds, and Jaiden Delaire added 13 points, 11 of them in the second half.

One bright spot for the Cardinal – they were a perfect 15 of 15 at the free throw line.

The Cardinal (8-5, 4-3) returns home this week to host Southern California on Thursday and UCLA next Saturday. Both games will be played in Santa Cruz, each with a 2 p.m. Pacific Time tipoff.

Utes snap four game skid at Cardinal expense 79-65

Stanford’s Thursday matinee at Salt Lake City didn’t go well, as Utah snapped a four-game losing streak with a 79-65 Pac-12 men’s basketball win over the Cardinal.

Timmy Allen led the Utes with 22 points and eight rebounds. Alfonso Plummer was next with 16 points for Utah (5-5 overall, 2-4 Pac-12), which had two games postponed since mid-December. Brandon Carlson added 12 points and four blocks, and Mikael Jantunen had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Daejon Davis was back in the Cardinal lineup after missing five games with an injury and scored a season-high 19 points. In the process, Davis became the 49th for Stanford (8-4, 4-2) to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Ziaire Williams scored 17 points, and Oscar da Silva was held to 11 points and two boards.

Utah used a 14-2 run at the end of the first half to surge ahead and spent most of the second half with a double-digit lead. The closest Stanford got was within nine points with less than four minutes remaining.

A 7-0 run, including five straight points by Jantunen, solidified Utah’s lead with 3 ½ minutes to play. The Utes shot 49 percent from the field, including 4 of 17 behind the arc and 25 of 30 free throws. Utah also outrebounded the Cardinal 37-26 and outscored Stanford 34-16 in the paint.

The Cardinal were 9 of 18 on 3-pointers, but shot only 29 percent (8 of 30) on 2-pointers.

Stanford’s Rocky Mountain road trip continues Saturday, when it travels to Boulder to face Colorado. Tipoff is scheduled for noon Pacific Time.

#1 Jerry, the Cardinal (8-3) are coming off a convincing win over the Washington State Cougars 75-60. The Cardinal’s Oscar da Silva continues his offensive success scoring 27 and 13 boards to lead to the Cardinal in the Jan 9th game.

#2 Jerry, 17 of da Silva’s 27 points came in the second half and for the Cougars defense da Silva was difficult to contain.

#3 The Cardinal had four players in double figures last Saturday including da Silva finishing second in scoring was forward Ziaire Williams whose been averaging in double figures at 11 points per game.

#4 Stanford improved it’s record to 4-1 in the Pac 12 and have won three consecutive games of those four wins their last three recent wins have come against Washington State(9-2) , Washington (1-9) and Oregon (8-1).

#5 This afternoon at 2:00pm at Utah the Cardinal face the Utah Utes (5-5). The Utes in years past had a reputation for having big men for their team success but this season their record shows that they’ve played around .500 ball. The Utes have lost four of their last five games and played on Wednesday against Utah Valley to get back in the win column and face today Stanford today with the home floor advantage.

Oscar da Silva’s hot shooting continued for Stanford on Saturday, as the Cardinal defeated Washington State 75-60 in Pac-12 men’s basketball played at Santa Cruz, Calif.

Da Silva scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while making 10 of 18 field goals and 6 of 9 at the free throw line. He scored 17 of his points in the second half, and also blocked two shots for the Cardinal (8-3 overall, 4-1 Pac-12) in their third straight win.

Ziaire Williams tallied 16 points and Jaiden Delaire added 10 for Stanford, which outrebounded the Cougars 36-29, and forced 17 turnovers – including 10 steals.

Stanford was 28 of 57 from the field (49 percent), and hit 3 of 17 from behind the arc, but also outscored the Cougars 42-14 in the paint.

Andrej Jakimovski led the Cougars (9-2, 2-2) with 19 points, including a career-high five 3-pointers, and Isaac Bonton was next for Washington State with 18 points and seven assists. Tony Miller came off the bench and contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for WSU.

The Cardinal held a 41-30 halftime lead, but Washington State surged ahead 55-53 on Efe Abogidi’s 3-pointer with 7:53 remaining. Da Silva countered with a 3 and Stanford never trailed again, finishing the game with an 11-0 run.

Next weekend, the Cardinal hit the road for afternoon games on Thursday at Utah and Colorado on Saturday.
