Stanford Overwhelmed In Season Finale 45-14

By Barbara Mason

The Stanford Cardinal (3-9) were completely overwhelmed by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-1). The Fighting Irish scored in every quarter to easily dismiss Stanford 45-14.

Saturday the Cardinal finished up their 2021 season against the #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame comes into this game with a 10-1 record while Stanford has a 3-8 record having struggled for most of this season. While the Fighting Irish do not have home field advantage they do have a 20.5 point advantage in the spread.

Stanford is coming off a pretty good thumping at the hands of the California Bears losing 41-11. Notre Dame is sailing through this season after most recentlyr beating Georgia Tech in a blowout 55-0.

The first two quarters featured the Fighting Irish at their finest. In the first quarter Notre Dame took a 7-0 lead when quarterback Jack Coan found Braden Lenzy for 16 yards and the first touchdown of the game.

Notre Dame was saving their best for last scoring two more touchdowns and tacking on a field goal in the second quarter to lead at the half 24-0. Notre Dame was in full control of this game. Quarterback Jack Coan had a great half.

Coan had thrown 18-23 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. On the other hand Stanford was rendered helpless with Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee 6-9 for a horrendous nine yards. They were outplayed at every turn. The closest that Stanford got in this game was an attempted field goal that had the distance but just missed. It was all Notre Dame in the first half.

Stanford got a real boost to start the third quarter. McKee marched his team downfield culminating in an Austin Jones five yard run to get up on the board 24-7. While this was a great start in the second half for Stanford, their defense was unable to contain Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish answered the Cardinal score with one of their own. Four plays for 75 yards and quarterback Jack Coan rushed for a one yard touchdown and a 31-7 lead.

The Fighting Irish had scored in every quarter in this game. They extended their lead in the fourth quarter when Tyler Buchner had a 33 yard romp for Notre Dame”s fifth touchdown of the game. Trailing by the score of 38-7 the Cardinal hopes of a major upset were dashed.

The Cardinal did score a second rushing touchdown but it was just too little too late. It was the longest play of the game for Stanford. A McKee pass to Benjamin Yurosek for 49 yards and the touchdown. The Cardinal trailed 38-14.

Notre Dame would score one more time before the clock ran out for the 45-14 final score. This has been a nightmare season for the Cardinal. It is the worst year they have had in 15 years and it was a miserable ending to a disappointing season.

It was very hard on the players as well as the coaching staff headed by David Shaw.. This is Shaw’s 11th year as Director of Football, and he is the winningest coach in Stanford history. This had to be a real punch in the gut season for Shaw. So the season is over and the program looks ahead to 2022 and a new start.

Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel Dullum: After Crushing win against Stanford last week Bears face a tough Bruins offense Saturday in the Southland

Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garber (7) throws against the Stanford Cardinal defense in first half action on Sat Nov 20, 2021 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto (AP News file photo)

Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 Daniel, the Cal Bears (4-6) last Saturday in the Big Game crushed the Stanford Cardinal (3-8) 41-11 after Cal has won three of it’s last four games do you view this game as one more brick in the wall a good push toward getting a bowl game birth?

#2 Daniel, Cal quarterback Chase Garbers threw 17-26 for 246 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. It was his first game back since the two week hiatus when over 24 players were out for Covid 19 protocols forcing Cal to play red shirts and call ups against the Arizona Wildcats (1-8) in a game they lost Nov 6th 10-3 and to cancel the following week’s game and win the Big Game last Sat Nov 20th.

#3 It was pretty much landslide game for the Bears last Sunday getting scoring 14 points in the second quarter, 13 points in the third quarter, and 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal defense just couldn’t stop Cal on their home field.

#4 One of the luxories that Garbers had last Saturday against Stanford was he had time in the pocket to throw and he was able to find a target just about every time dropping back.

#5 Cal takes on the UCLA Bruins (7-4) the Bruins have done their own crushing on offense in their last two games taking out the Colorado Buffaloes (3-7) 44-20 and the USC Trojans (4-6) 62-33. UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson threw for 349 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions against the Trojans.

Golden Bears enjoy a big day for offense and defense in 41-11 win over Cardinal

By Daniel Dullum
Saturday, November 20, 2021

California benefitted from a strong defensive effort, along with the offense hitting on all cylanders as the Bears won the 124th annual Big Gane 41-11.

The Bears (4-6 overall, 3-4 Pac-12) stopped the home team twice on downs inside their own 5-yard line. The Csl offense, was back to making big plays – three of them for 75 yards or more,

The second time Stanford failed to score from inside the Cal 5 early in the second quarte, the game remained scoreless until four plays later, when Chase Garbers fired an 84-yard scoring pass to Trevon Clark for Cal’s first touchdown. It was also the longest scoring pass play in Big Game history.

Altogether, the Bears rolled up a Big Game-record 636 yards of total offense, breaking the old Big Game record of 603 yards that the Cardinal accumulated in 2013. And, the 41 points was the most Cal has scored in the annual rivalry game since 2009.

It’s difficult to select a single player of the game, but you could split this one five ways and give it to the Cal offensive line.

Garbers, back after missing two weeks due to COVID-19 protocol, had plenty of time to in the pocket, and was not sacked. He completed 17-of-26 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns and was picked off once. Garbers also ran for 59 yards and tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Christopher Brooks to make it 14-0 with 5:38 to play in the first half, and the rout was on.

Cal had its running game going as well. Brooks rushed for 131 yards and Marcel Dancy added 92 more – 76 of them on a third-quarter touchdown run – as the Bears gained 352 yards rushing.

The Bears even used a little razzle-dazzle in the third quarter when wide reciever Kikoa Crawford took a lateral from Garbers and connected with Clark on a 34-yard gain, putting the ball on the Cardinal 6, setting up a Dario Longhetto 24-yard field goal. Clark finished the game with 135 recieving yards on three catches.

With the win, the Golden Bears still have a slim chance of playing in a bowl game, but have to win out against UCLA and USC to do it.

Not much fun on the farm for Stanford in 41-11 loss

Not Much Fun On the Farm For Stanford In 41-11 Loss

By Barbara Mason

Saturday afternoon the age old matchup between the Stanford Cardinal (3-8) and the California Bears (4-6) took place at Stanford stadium. Last year the Cardinal took the “Big Game” the 123rd by the score of 24-23 passing the Axe to Stanford. In 2019 the Bears won the game 24-20 and Cal made it two years in row with a convincing 41-11 win at Stanford Stadium on Saturday.

This game had a start that neither team wanted to see. Stanford’s Tanner McKee threw an interception on their first possession and in the next possession, the Bears fumbled the ball deep in their own territory. Stanford had the ball first and goal and was unable to convert on fourth down giving the ball back to Cal.

Mid-way through the first quarter California got a great drive going. Cal Quarterback Chase Garbers completed one pass after another driving deep into Stanford territory. Following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Garbers threw his second interception of the game undoing a textbook perfect drive.

The first quarter was a symphony of errors for both teams. In four possessions there had been three turnovers.

The final minutes of the opening quarter saw Stanford drive downfield deep into Cal territory with another first and goal. For the second time in this game Stanford went on fourth and goal and failed again. It was another great defensive effort by the Cal Bears. Cal struck first in this game. Garbers found Trevon Clark for 84 yards and the Bears took a 7-0 lead. With a lot of game left to go, Cal was having an extraordinary defensive game.

The Bears continued their relentless onslaught offensively as Garbers drove downfield mixing it up running and through the air finding Christopher Brooks in the end zone for one yard and the touchdown. The Bears had extended their lead to 14-0. Just before the half Stanford would kick a 31 yard field goal to get up on the board 14-3.

California would pick up in the third quarter where they left off in the first half. They did have a first and goal but had to settle for a 23 yard field goal and a 17-3 lead. The Bears would tack on a second field goal , this one for 33 yards and Cal kicker Dario Longhetto was perfect for the game.

As this game wore on it became very evident that the Bears came to play exploding with one great offensive play after another As the clock began to wind down on the third quarter Cal running back Marcel Dancy scampered for 76 yards and another Cal touchdown. Cal now led 27-3 rendering Stanford helpless and unable to get much going.

Going into the fourth quarter Stanford had an insurmountable mountain to climb and the Bears showed no sign of letting down. The Cardinal put together a nice drive to score their first touchdown of the game in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. Stanford would attempt a 2-pt conversion which was good cutting their deficit to 27-11 with 12:48 left in the game.

Cal’s Marcel Dancy rushed for two yards to extend the Bears lead to 34-11. This was his second touchdown of the game. The Bears got a slow start but once they got going there was no stopping them. With ten minutes left in the game Cal had 590 total yards to Stanfords 276 total yards.

With five minutes left in the game California was on the Stanford five yard line first and goal. Chris Street scored his first career touchdown and it became evident that Cal came in to inflict some real pain and take back the Ax. This was Cal’s best game this season on both sides of the ball. With the Bears leading 41-11 and five minutes left this game was one for the history books as well as some stunning records.

With 3:35 left in the game the Bears nailed the coffin shut with another interception. Students began to line up for the ceremonial passing of the Ax which went to the Ca Bears this year.

Cal had a team total of an amazing 636 yards to Stanfords 290. The Bears simply outplayed Stanford offensively and defensively. Despite their season this game will be the highlight for Cal no matter what happens moving forward and for Stanford the game was a real low that will continue until these two teams meet again in 2022 for the 125th “Big Game” looking to take back the Ax.

Stanford will take on 10-1 Notre Dame next Saturday Nov 27. At the time of this post, kickoff is still to be determined.

Baylor uses big second-half to run past Stanford 86-48

The Baylor Bears (4-8) used a big second half to show why they’re ranked at No. 9 on Saturday, as the undefeated Bears blew past the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 86-48 in non-conference men’s basketball at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.

Stanford (3-2) trailed by four on a layup by Jaiden Delaire with 45 seconds left in the first half, but a James Akinjo jumper gave the Bears a 34-28 halftime lead.

However, Baylor (4-0) went on a tear to open the second half, outscoring the Cardinal 29-3 in an 11-minute stretch. In that run, the Bears converted nine steals into points. Stanford shot 29 percent in the second half, while the Bears forced a total of 22 turnovers.

LI Cryer topped the Baylor scoring column with 21 points, followed by freshman Kendall Brown with 15, and 11 points apiece by James Akinjo and Jeremy Sochan. Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua added nine points and seven rebounds.

Spencer Jones and Jaiden Delaire each scored 10 points to lead the Cardinal, followed by Noah Taitz with eight. Stanford did have a 30-24 rebounding edge.

This was the first meeting between the two schools in 34 years, and Baylor’s first win over the Cardinal in their four games. It was also Stanford’s first-ever visit to Waco.

Stanford returns home to Maples Pavilion on Tuesday to host North Carolina A&T.

Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cal ready to battle Stanford for Axe in the Big Game Saturday

On the Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, last week’s game against the USC Trojans (4-5) postponed due to Covid 19 protocol issues with over 24 Cal Bears (3-6) players infected with the Bears coming off a 10-7 loss to the Arizona Wildcats (1-8) on Nov 6th and canceled last Sat Nov 13 would you look at last week’s postponement a good rest period or a game that the team wanted to get out battle USC and try and get back in the win column.

#2 The Wildcats had had such a horrible season they went in against Cal 0-8 have won a game all season and starting quarterback Will Plummer had been struggling under center all season with a low ratio of completed passes but with Cal coming along using most of their bench the Plummer and the Wildcats were able to get some daylight and get in the win column.

#3 The game in Arizona offensively for the Bears was one of their worst outing on offense the Bears in the first half just couldn’t get any offense jelling. Bears starting quarterback Chase Garbers was missed and back up Ryan Glover couldn’t get in the end zone getting shutout in the first half. Glover threw for 94 yards and no touchdowns.

#4 The Bears have their whole team back after being quarantined since that Nov 6th game in Arizona and have Garbers and the starters back. Talk about how much of a relief that has to be for head coach Justin Wilcox.

#5 The Big Game for the Axe is on deck as the Golden Bears head to Stanford University to play the Cardinal (3-7) at 4:00 pm PST. Daniel it seems no matter how bad or how great either team is doing it’s always like a grudge match a real rivalry when these two teams face each other.

Stanford Loses Fifth In A Row to Oregon 35-14

Stanford Loses Fifth In A Row to Oregon 35-14

By Barbara Mason

The Oregon Beavers (6-4) scored in all four quarters beating the Stanford Cardinal (3-7) 35-14 with relative ease becoming bowl eligible with the win.

The Cardinal are still reeling from a devastating loss last week to Utah 52-7. This was Stanford’s worst loss in the last 18 years. Last weekend two coordinators one from Washington and one from Oregon State were fired for poor performances but they did not make any staff changes.

Stanford was on a four-game losing streak and was looking to turn that around when they played Oregon State (6-4) in Oregon this afternoon.

Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee was forced to miss a second week of action. He was seen on the sidelines leaning on a crutch in the Utah game so it was not a surprise when it was announced that he would be unavailable for the Oregon State game. Head Coach David Shaw started freshman quarterback Ari Patu in the game. At 6’3” the dual-threat Patu has a quick release and a strong arm.

Because of the Stanford quarterback injuries as well as struggles on the line of scrimmage, the Cardinal are close to a two-touchdown underdog. This could be another tough game for Stanford.

The Beavers would score at 6:30 in the first quarter taking a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Chance Nolan would rush for four yards and a touchdown. The Everett Hayes kick was good and so Oregon drew first blood. Stanford would come up empty in the first quarter.

Stanford was trying to open up the run game not having much passing success in the second quarter. Trying to force a pass, Patu threw an interception. At 6:24 Stanford quarterback Patu began to heat up completing two passes in a row driving close to Oregon territory. Up to that point Patu was one of six for a mere two yards.

Stanford now had some momentum going with both the running and their passing game. The Cardinal would try a 55 yard field goal that was blocked by Oregon. As the second quarter began to wind down the Beavers would score a second touchdown extending their lead to 14-0 at the half.

Oregon would score again in the third quarter now leading 21-0. Chance Nolan would find Trevon Bradford for 67 yards and the touchdown. At 10:24 the Cardinal would find the end zone via an Ari Patu pass to Benjamin Yurosek for eight yards and their first touchdown of the game. Trailing 21-7, Stanford had a lot of work left to do in this game.

When Oregon went on a fourth down deep in Stanford territory, the Cardinal defense held fast and took over on downs. They had a terrific scoring opportunity that they squandered away when Patu threw another interception. With 14 seconds left in the third Stanford fumbled setting up another Oregon score. The three Stanford turnovers would not win very many football games.

The Beavers would start the fourth quarter with a Nolan pass for five yards to Teagan Quitoriano and Oregon kept racking up those scores now leading 35-7. Mid-way through the final quarter Stanford was again driving deep in Oregon territory. This time the Cardinal cashed in on the opportunity scoring a rushing touchdown. Nathaniel Peat rushed for 18 yards and the Joshua Karty kick was good now trailing 35-14. It was too little too late for Stanford once again scoring late when trailing by a lot.

So it was a story of fumbles, interceptions, missed tackles and missed opportunities for Stanford. This was their fifth loss in a row.

The Big Game is on the horizon for Stanford as they take on their rival, the California Bears Saturday November 20th. Kickoff will be at 4:00 PM.

Hot-shooting Broncos defeat Stanford 88-72 on opening night

A big shooting night for PJ Pipes and Jalen Williams sparked Santa Clara to an 88-72 non conference men’s basketball win over Stanford Friday.

Pipes finished with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Williams was next for the Broncos (2-0) with 19 points. Keshawn Justice contributed 14 points, along with a career-high 13 rebounds to go with four assists and two steals. Josip Vrankic had a career-high eight assists along with 15 points.

Stanford (1-1) took an early 5-0 lead after the Broncos missed their first three shots, but Santa Clara caught fire from the perimeter, hitting 11 of its next 12 shots while forging a 21-0 run to take the lead for good.

A 13-2 Cardinal run, sparked by six points from Maxime Raynaid, cut Stanford’s deficit to 30-24 at 6:32 of the first half. Santa Clara responded with a 10point run that prevented the Cardinal from getting any closer.

Harrison Ingraham led the Cardinal with 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Raynaid finished with his first career double-double, as the 7-foot-1 freshman center tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while hitting 7-of-9 field goal attempts.

The Broncos hit a blistering 60 percent from the field (34-of-67), including 12-of-24 from behind the 3-point arc. However, Santa Clara struggled at the free throw line, hitting 8-of-15.

The Cardinal host San Jose State on Monday, and Valparaiso visits Maples Pavilion on Wednesday.

Cal Bears Football podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cal-USC postponement gives Bears a week to prepare for Stanford

Cal Bears head coach Justin Wilcox stands on the sidelines with his players against the Oregon State Beavers on Sat Oct 30, 2021photo. Wilcox said the team followed all the Covid 19 protocols but nonetheless Sat Nov 13, 2021 game against USC has been postponed to Dec 4, 2021 (AP News file photo)

On the Cal Bears Football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Whose dumbfounded the most in the Cal Bears (3-6) Covid 19 situation head coach Justin Wilcox who said the team followed protocols or the other head scratcher how did the team contract Covid 19 that forced them to postpone this Saturday’s game with USC (4-5).

#2 Either way Daniel the Bears get a week off after that grueling game in Tucson where Cal quarterback Ryan Glover just couldn’t get any offensive traction going against the struggling Arizona Wildcats (1-8).

#3 The key thing in the game against the Wildcats the Bears who were missing over 24 players due to Covid 19 protocols coach Wilcox had a rough time getting second stringers, practice squad players and back up to jell in what some would call a thrown together situation.

#4 How important will this week be for the Bears to regroup from last week’s loss in Arizona get a week off and prepare for the Big Game against the Stanford Cardinal (3-6) at Stanford Stadium next Sat Nov 13. The Cardinal are coming off that horrendous loss to the Utah Utes (6-3) 57-7 and are looking for a better game. How do you see the Bears and Cardinal matching up next week?

#5 Lastly Cal quarterback Chase Garbers will have had two weeks off the first week against Arizona where he sat out for Covid 19 protocols and this Saturday for the same reasons. Enough time to recover from the Covid issues and start throwing the rock in preparation against the Cardinal.

Moments later, a layup by Isa Silva put the Cardinal up 37-35 and sparked a six-point run that gave Stanford a 43-35 advantage. The Cardinal led by as many as 15 with just under five minutes remaining en route to their first win of the season.

Harrison Ingram led Stanford with 16 points, followed by Delaire with 14 and Lukas Kisunas with 12. Silva had four assists, while Ingram grabbed seven rebounds. Delaire and Maxime Raynaud each had six boards as the Cardinal outrebounded Tarleton State 36-25.
