Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson: Cardinal coming off loss will try and pick up the pieces at Washington Sat 24th

USC Trojan quarterback Caleb Williams (13) is on the run to avoid Stanford Cardinal defensive end Stephen Herron at Stanford Stadium on Sat Sep 10, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast:

#1 Michael, it was just too much USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams for the Stanford Cardinal last Saturday. The first half Trojans showed what kind of offense they had with Williams under center.

#2 Williams went 20-27 for 341 yards and four touchdowns no doubt the Cardinal line had trouble trying to figure out how to stop the Trojans.

#3 Two of Williams passes went to receiver Jordan Addison with seven receptions for 172 yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinal coverage on Addison was hard to keep up and he got some open looks to help the Trojans score.

#4 Cardinal head coach David Shaw said the Cardinal on defense had just too many bad positions and on offense they could have kept the ball a little longer.

#5 The Cardinal for week 3 will have a bye and will face the Washington Huskies on Sat Sep 24th. The Huskies are grounding and pounding they have won their last two games and left little doubt. The Huskies beat Kent State 45-20 in week 1 and crushed Portland State 52-6. Taking those games into account how do you see Stanford faring against the Huskies.

10th Ranked USC Trojans Attack the Farm and Manhandle Stanford Cardinal in Last Conference Visit 41-28

USC quarterback Caleb Williams (13) runs for some daylight as defensive edge player Stephen Herron (15) gives chase at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on Sat Sep 10, 2022 (AP News photo)

STANFORD, Calf.–The #10  “Men of Troy” from the University of Southern California did not need a Trojan Horse to invade Stanford Stadium, as they say Goodbye in dominating fashion, 41-28 over the Cardinal in front of a national television audience, 43, 813 fans and a few Stanford sports legends

As in the Cardinal game against Colgate, there was a quick score within the first minutes of play; however, this time it was the now conference foe getting into the endzone.  Stanford’s junior captain quarterback, Tanner McKee, threw an interception to USC’s junior free safety, Max Williams.

The Trojans turned that gift into a touchdown in less than three minutes of game play, on a five-yard touchdown pass by sophomore sensation, quarterback, Caleb Williams, to freshman tight end, Lake McKee.

Nearly five minute later, Stanford and the Cardinal faithful thought the game was all tied up at 7, but the TD was overturned after review.  After a defensive penalty on Stanford’s field goal attempt, the Cardinal brought the offense back on the field for a fourth down attempt to score a tying touchdown.  That turned into a disastrous scenario, as McKee threw another interception in the endzone.

“So two tipped interceptions, both in scoring position, and then fumbled the ball inside the 5 yard line. I mean, that’s the ballgame. You don’t come back from that against a good football team. You’re taking away 21 points. At the minimum those are two touchdowns inside the 5 yard line and a field goal; at minimum it’s 17 points.”  Said Stanford Head Coach David Shaw.

“Now we could’ve put 17 points on the board in the first half, a different ballgame.  So those are momentum killers, and those are the fastest way to lose a football game is to turn the ball over,” added Shaw.

USC parlayed that miscue into another touchdown pass by their quarterback, this time on a 22-yard connection to junior wide receiver Jordan Addison.

After going down 14-0, still in the first quarter, Stanford gets on the scoreboard, on a 3-yard touchdown pass by McKee to junior running back, E.J. Smith, with less than a minute left in the initial quarter.

That was too much time for the Trojans, as they scored on a 75-yard bomb from Williams to Jordan Addison, for the second time.  After one, 21-7 USC.

The second stanza opened on a downer for the Cardinal, because EJ Williams fumbled nearly three minutes into the quarter, and USC capitalized on this turnover too.  Caleb Williams threw his fourth touchdown, this one to sophomore receiver, Mario Williams.

EJ Smith scampered into the endzone, redeeming himself, and cutting the Trojans lead in half, 28-14.

USC was not finished scoring, when Trojans’ senior running back, Travis Dye, ran into the endzone on a 26-yard carry, with about two and half minutes to go in the half.  After 30 minutes, 35-14 Trojans.

The third quarter had less action, with the only scoring coming from Southern Cal’s freshman place kicker, Denis Lynch, converting 2/3 of his attempts, adding six more points to the Trojans tally.  41-14, USC.

The final fourth of the game, Stanford scored twice (two 2-yard TD’s), by junior Casey Filkins and McKee with a QB sneak.

After the final whistle, the Trojans from the South were the victors, with a 13-point margin over the Cardinal of the North. USC 41, Stanford 28.

Cardinal Running back E.J. Williams didn’t have the explosive game he had last week, but did gain 88 rushing yards and 26 receiving, while scoring a touchdown in each format; however, he fumbled twice in crucial possessions.  QB Tanner McKee threw for 220 yard and scored on a passing TD and rushing TD, but gave the opponent two interceptions.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams dominated the game with gaudy numbers: 341 passing yards and 4 touchdown tosses.  His favorite target was receiver Jordan Addison 8(7) targets for 172 yards and two touchdowns

Stanford has a bye next week, while USC hosts Fresno State.

USC and UCLA will be leaving the PAC 12 for the Big !0, so this marks the last visit for the Trojans on the Farm and/or Stanford Stadium as a member of the Pacific 12 Conference.  A great deal of history was halted today, although they may still meet in non-conference games.

Cardinal greats, such as former quarterback, Andrew Luck, current Women’s basketball coach, Tara VanDerveer and former forward, Nneka Ogwumike were honored during the game.

Luck is going into the College Football Hall of Fame, while Ogwumike and VanDerveer are inducted into Stanford University Athletics Hall of Fame.

#1 The Stanford Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee threw for two touchdowns to his favorite target wide receiver Michael Wilson as Stanford left no doubt about it with a 41-10 win over the Colgate Raiders last Saturday at Stanford Stadium.

#2 Head coach David Shaw very happy with McKee’s performance saying that’s the reason why he’s team captain and was the team leader even during the off season.

#3 McKee’s had an impressive line against Colgate Saturday throwing 22-27, 308 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

#4 The Cardinal had the game in hand in the first half, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter and scoring three times in the second quarter coming away with a 28-7 first half lead.

#5 The Cardinal got some great help from running back EJ Smith who ran for 118 yards on 11 carries scoring two touchdowns with the Cardinal hosting the USC Trojans this Sat Sep 11th a 4:30 pm PDT kick off at Stanford Stadium can the Cardinal run on the Trojan defense?

Stanford Brushes Off Colgate in Home Opener 41-10

Stanford wide receiver Michael Wilson (4) makes a catch to score a touchdown against Colgate defensive back Asauni Allen (7) and defensive back Jackson Price during the second quarter at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on Sat Sep 3, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calf. — Stanford (1-0) opened their 2022 season with a bang, by handling visiting Colgate 41-10 on the Farm. Junior running back, E.J. Smith got the party started off immediately (:15) with an 87-yard TD run on the initial play of the Cardinal’s opening drive.

The Cardinal was able to hold on to that early lead for the next 14+ minutes, with the help of Colgate’s place kicker, Spencer Biscoe, as he missed two (33-yd & 45-yd) first quarter field goals, approximately five minutes apart.

As what happened in the initial quarter, a touchdown was scored within the first minute. Stanford sophomore, Casey Filkins muffed a punt, in which Colgate’s sophomore cornerback, Asuani Allen, recovered in the endzone, tying the score at seven, after the obligatory PAT.

The Cardinal ended the half by scoring three consecutive touchdowns in that quarter’s next 14+ minutes. This included another rushing touchdown (1-yd) for Smith, and Junior quarterback, Tanner McKee and Senior wide receiver, Michael Wilson, connected on two touchdown combinations (26-yd & 13-yd).

At the midway point, EJ Smith was over 100 yards rushing and Tanner McKee surpassed 200 yards passing yards. Stanford led 28-7.

The third was pretty uneventful, except for the Raiders’ Biscoe, as he finally connected on a a 25-yard field goal on his third try. Now Colgate was only down by 18.

With the big guns for Stanford on the bench, the Cardinal still managed to get 13 more points on the scoreboard. Casey Filkins made up for his earlier mistake by rushing for a one-yard touchdown, and sophomore quarterback, Ari Patu connected with freshman wide receiver, Mudia Rueben for a seven-yard touchdown, although the extra point was missed by sophomore place kicker, Emmet Kenney.

After 60 minutes of play, Stanford had a 31-point victory over the guest Raiders from New York, 41-10.

Despite the impressive victory, Coach David Shaw wasn’t pleased about the turnovers:

“Yeah, the hard part is both. We emphasize so many things. We talked about taking care of the football. We did not do that tonight.”

E.J, Smith tallied 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Tanner McKee threw for 308 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Both players only played three quarters.

The Cardinal will next be in action, Saturday, September 10, 2022, as they host the USC Trojans

#1 Pac 12 college presidents and chancellors Friday gave the Pac 12 the nod to “explore all expansion options” after UCLA and USC decision to move to the Big Ten.

#2 The Pac 12 presidents said they are committed to upgrading the Pac 12 for the excellence of the students athletes. With UCLA and USC leaving there is no doubt it leaves a huge void.

#3 LA is a huge TV market second in the nation it’s a big task to replace a USC and UCLA and the Pac 12 as of yesterday are not sure where to start looking.

#4 As of Friday’s announcement the Pac 12 colleges are not only scrambling to replace USC and UCLA but Washington and Oregon are also considering joining the Big Ten what impact will that further on the Pac 12 to lose the Huskies and Ducks.

#5 The loss of USC and UCLA not only impacts the football and basketball programs but all the other sports as well and some of the rivalries as well. The Pac 12 has also suffered in it’s TV Network as well in recent years.

Stanford gave top-seed Arizona all it could handle in Thursday’s quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament in Las Vegas. The No. 2-ranked Wildcats held off an inspired Cardinal team to win 84-80.

Christian Koloko topped the U of A scoring with 24 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists, followed by Bennedict Mathurin with 20 points and seven rebounds, as the Wildcats (29-3) struggled with Stanford for the second time this season before prevailing, Azuolas Tubelis added seven rebounds and five assists, and point guard Kerr Kriisa had 10 points and five assists before leaving with an injury in the final minute.

The nine-seed Cardinal opened the tournament with a last-second win over Arizona State on Wednesday and opened Thursday’s game with a barrage of 3-pointers, going 11 for 20 behind the arc while shooting 54 percent against the league’s top defense.

Spencer Jones bagged a game-high 28 points – 13 in the first half – followed by Harrison Ingram with 16. Jones was 12 of 18 overall from the field, including 4 of 7 3-pointers. Ingram and Michael O’Connell (11 points) each had four assists.

Arizona led 49-37 at halftime and outscored the Cardinal 44-43 in the final 20 minutes. The Cardinal were 6 of 8 behind the arc in the first half and never allowed the Wildcats to build a big lead.

Down the stretch, Arizona took an 82-77 lead on a Koloko dunk, but the Cardinal (16-16) responded with a 3-pointer by Ingram, cutting Stanford’s deficit to 82-80 with 13 seconds remaining, The Cardinal fouled Pelle Larsson, who made a pair of free throws with 8.5 seconds to play, accounting for the final score.

The Wildcats will face Colorado in the semifinals, while Stanford awaits a possible postseason invite to a tournament other than the Big Dance.

Last-second shot by Keefe helps Cardinal stun ASU 71-70 in Pac-12 tourney

The good news for Stanford: It gets to continue in the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament in Las Vegas. The bad news: The Cardinal get to play top seed and No. 2-ranked Arizona in the quarterfinal round.

Stanford stopped a late-season nosedive on Wednesday when James Keefe converted a short jumper as time expired, providing the Cardinal with a stunning 71-70 opening round win over favored Arizona State.

Going into the tournament, Stanford (16-15) had lost five straight and seven of its last eight games in the regular season. The Sun Devils (14-17) came into the tournament on a roll, having won four straight and seven of their last eight.

Keefe’s shot, which bounced around the rim and backboard as time elapsed, capped a 16-1 run that erased a 14-point Cardinal deficit. The Sun Devils were up 50-33 at 13:35 of the second half before a 13-3 Stanford run pulled them to within seven at 7:47.

Two more 3-pointers and a dunk by Kimani Lawrence put the Devils back up by 14 with three minutes remaining.

Spencer Jones sank a 3-pointer that pulled the Cardinal to within 70-69 with 37 seconds to play. Stanford chose not to foul, and after Harrison Ingram got the rebound off a miss by ASU’s Jalen Graham with nine seconds remaining, he headed up court but had the ball stripped in the lane.

Keefe picked up the loose ball about ten feet away from the basket and hoisted a desperation floater with a half-second showing on the clock that found the mark.

Jones made six 3s while scoring a career-high 26 points for Stanford. Keefe finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while making seven of eight from the field. Brandon Angel added 15 points.

ASU lost to Stanford for the first time this season despite tying the Pac-12 tournament record of 15 3-pointers, set by Stanford against Arizona State in an overtime game in 2013. The Sun Devils were also 11 of 33 on 2-point field goals and three of seven at the free throw line.

DJ Horne led the Sun Devils with 21 points, including five treys. Marreon Jackson had 14 points, including three 3s, and Jay Heath made four 3-pointers for 12 points.

As the tournament’s top seed, Arizona drew a first-round bye and will tip off with the Cardinal Thursday at 12 noon PST.

For the second straight game, Stanford took a halftime lead but couldn’t sustain it, as the Cardinal fell to Arizona State 65-56 Saturday at Tempe, Ariz., in the Pac-12 men’s basketball regular season finale for both schools.

Senior Marreon Jackson netted 18 points in his final home game, as the Sun Devils (14-16 overall, 10-10 Pac-12) finished their conference schedule with four straight victories and seven wins in their final eight games.

Stanford closed out the Pac-12 slate with five consecutive losses, dropping seven of its last eight games.

Jackson was eight of 15 from the field, along with six assists, six steals and six rebounds. Jalen Graham was next for ASU with 16 points on five of six field goals, and DJ Horne added 12 points and four assists.

Spencer Jones and Brandon Angel each scored 14 points to lead the Cardinal. Jones connected on three of five behind the arc, and Angel made four three-pointers. Harrison Ingram grabbed nine of the Cardinal’s 36 rebounds to go with four assists and three steals.

Stanford (15-15 overall, 8-12 Pac-12) led 32-30 at the intermission. Alonzo Gaffney hit a jumper to tie the game to open the second half, and followed with a 3-pointer at 16:41, putting the Sun Devils up 35-32.

Jaiden Delaire responded with a 3-pointer for the Cardinal, but Graham converted a three-point play, Horne and Jackson hit baskets, and ASU had a 43-37 lead.

Brandon Angel sank a three–pointer with 6:13 to play, putting the Cardinal up 52-51, but the Sun Devils responded with a 10-0 run and didn’t look back.

Stanford and ASU will meet in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

Pac-12 champion No. 2 Arizona defeats Stanford 81-69

Stanford guard Michael O’Connell (5) drives on Arizona guard Bennedict Mathurin at McKale Memorial Center in Tucson on Thu Mar 3, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Daniel Dullum
Thursday, March 3, 2022

Fresh off clinching the Pac-12 regular season title, No. 2 Arizona returned home to McKale Center in Tucson and held off inspired Stanford 81-69 in men’s basketball Thursday.

Bennedict Mathurin led the Wildcats with 24 points, followed by Christian Koloko with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as U of A (27-3 overall, 17-2 Pac-12) remained undefeated at home in its first season under Coach Tommy Lloyd. Kerr Kriisa added seven assists and Azuolas Tubelis chipped in with 11 points.

Arizona also clinched its first conference championship in four years.

After defeating No. 16 Southern California on Tuesday in Los Angeles, Arizona came out sluggish against the Cardinal (15-14 overall, 8-11 Pac-12), shooting poorly while Stanford built a nine-point lead in the first half, eventually whittled down to a 39-37 Cardinal lead at halftime. Stanford made more baskets in the first half (12) than they did in their entire loss to California.

But the Wildcats pulled away after the intermission, outscoring the Cardinal 44-30, as Stanford’s late-season tailspin continued with its sixth loss in seven games. Mathurin had a personal 8-0 run against the Cardinal to open the second half that put U of A up 67-58.

Arizona stayed close by making 16 points off 11 Cardinal turnovers. Things didn’t go much better for Stanford in the second half, making 3 of 9 from 3-point range while finishing the game with 17 turnovers.

Spencer Jones led the Cardinal with 22 points, followed by Michael O’Connell with 16 points – all scored in the first half. Maxime Raynaud added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Harrison Ingram led the Cardinal with nine boards.

Stanford made 15 of 28 in the first 20 minutes, including 7 of 10 behind the arc.\

Stanford finishes the regular season in Tempe on Saturday, visiting Arizona State.
