On Pac 12 the podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 Michael, Cal, Stanford and SMU were close to getting that invite to the ACC but the vote was postponed last Monday due to a shooting on the UNC campus?

#2 There have been ACC teams that have complained about their TV deal which runs through the 2036 season ACC school is out $30 million less per year then the SEC and Big Ten.

#3 Do you see Cal and Stanford going into the ACC as a boost to the ACC’s TV package? Nothing like adding the fifth largest TV market to your repertoire?

#4 The Bears and the Cardinal are want the same revenue share, Stanford has a strong financial backing and Cal doesn’t have the same financial backing like a Stanford taking that in consideration would the ACC still add Cal to the conference?

#5 What about the non revenue sports do you see them being included in the ACC with football and basketball?

Pac 12 podcast with Michael Wagaman: Cal and Stanford to leave Pac 12 looking at ACC

California head coach Justin Wilcox encourages his players during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game on Oct. 15, 2021, in Eugene, Ore. Wilcox said Mon Aug 7, 2023 that the breakup of the Pac 12 is sad and disappointing and is contemplating the future of Cal football. (AP file photo)

On the Pac 12 podcast with Michael:

At some point it became very clear to everyone it wasn’t every man for himself but it was it was every school for itself. Once every other schools starting leaving the Pac 12 you can’t blame Cal and Stanford for leaving.

The plan isn’t to rebuild the Pac 12 there wasn’t another school to say “hey were here to replace the school that just left” that wasn’t going to happen and the media money that was going to be part of where they were going to go the Pac 12 had to get something done quickly.

So it’s not surprising that they’ve taken this move as I said as a longtime west coast guy of the Pac 10 that was my heart and soul growing up. It kills me because this is part of tradition not just for the schools but for the communities, Berkeley, Palo Alto, this is a long history of their players in and out of town.

Pac 12 podcast with Troy Ewers: It gets worse for Pac 12 with Oregon and Washington moving to the Big Ten

Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren played a big role in bringing in the Colorado Buffaloes, Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, UCS Trojans, and UCLA Bruins (USA Today file photo)

On the Pac 12 with Troy Ewers:

#1 The break up of the Pac 12 continues after Oregon Ducks trustees voted on Friday to accept the move to the Big Ten. The Washington Huskies also will be leaving the Pac 12 to join the Big Ten.

#2 The Big Ten presidents voted happily to vote in Oregon and Washington for the 2024 season and they see a great benefit for their TV coverage having the Ducks and Huskies in the confrence.

#3 Last year the Big Ten got UCLA and USC in the fold and that was the beginning of the crumbling of the Pac 12.

#4 With the Colorado Buffaloes, USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington leaving the Pac 12 the conference. At this rate the Pac 12 could be down to just four schools, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, and Washington State which pretty much would have to move them into other conferences.

#5 It was Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren who strongly urged Oregon and Washington to join the Big Ten. With UCLA and USC it gives the Big Ten a strong position for their TV contracts and recruiting for the schools.

Rebels’ stingy defense ends Cardinal tournament run 54-49

A highly successful women’s basketball season came to an end for Stanford Sunday, as the No. 1-seeded Cardinal fell to No. 8-seed Mississippi 54-49 in the second round of the Seattle 4 Region tournament in a game played at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford finished its season 29-6, while the Rebels improved to 25-8 as they advance to the Sweet 16. The loss snapped the Cardinal’s streak of 14 consecutive years reaching the regional round.

“I thought our team really battled in the second half,” Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer said in the postgame media session. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole, but you know, we battled back. We tied it up and we had an opportunity to win the game.

“I think Mississippi is a very experienced and very determined team. They made plays down the stretch that we didn’t make.”

Cameron Brink missed the Cardinal’s NCAA tournament opener against Sacred Heart with what was described as “a non-COVID-19 illness.” She played 34 minutes, scoring a team-high 20 points along with 13 rebounds, seven blocks and two steals. Brink also hit 10-of-10 free throws.

“I think I just – I felt sick,” Brink said. “I think I’m still getting back to my normal self but I definitely got a little winded throughout the game, but I tried my best.”

Senior Haley Jones had 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals in her final game for Stanford.

“I think Ole Miss is a great defensive team,” Jones said. “And we heard them say that they prided themselves on their defense. They packed it in their suitcase, and they were going to come in and execute that plan. I think they did a great job.

“They (Mississippi) were contesting shots in a great way. But we missed a lot of shots that we usually make, which is disappointing.”

Angel Baker was the top scorer for Ole Miss with 13 points, followed by Marquesha Davis with 12 and Madison Scott with 11. Davis had four of the Rebels’ nine steals, and Rita Igbokwe grabbed eight rebounds in 17 minutes.

The Rebels, who led 29-20 at halftime, never trailed and scored 24 points off 21 Stanford turnovers. After Mississippi built a 49-41 lead with 5:47 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal used an 8-0 run, capped by two Brink free throws, to tie the game at 49-49 with 1:15 left.

Scott sank a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining to put the Rebels back in front at 51-49. Three seconds later, after Jones turned the b ball over, Davis hit two free throws to increase the Ole Miss lead to 53-49. Myah Taylor stole the ball from Jones with 15 seconds remaining and sank 1 of 2 foul shots.

Mississippi will face 4-seed Texas or 5-seed Louisville in the regional in Seattle on Friday. The Longhorns and Cardinals play on Monday.

Stanford built an early lead and maintained it until the final horn on Wednesday, as the 10th-seeded Cardinal upended 7th-seed Utah 73-62 in the opening round of the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Cardinal led 34-27 at halftime. Utah pulled to within 58-48 on a Stefanovic 3-pointer with six minutes left in the second half. Jones responded with a 3 for the Cardinal. A basket by Carlson closed Utah’s deficit to 70-60 at 1:20, but Angel sank a pair of free throws and Ingram hit one of two at the line.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson: How Stanford will shake off last two loses going into March Madness

Cameron Brink (22) center Stanford Cardinal skilled at the block shot but it just wasn’t enough against the UCLA Bruins at the Pac 12 Tournament on Sun Mar 5, 2023 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael, when you look at the Stanford women’s last two loses out of their last three games to Utah and UCLA how much do you define that as ending their season in a negative way or it was just a learning experience and they’ll get em in March Madness.

#2 Do you believe that losing the last two games out of three actually makes the Cardinal sit up and pay attention of some of the things they need to work on before the big dance.

#3 In the Pac 12 Tournament this will be the first time in years that the Cardinal will not go in as a contender a finalist as it were. Does that play on the Cardinal psyche going into the rest of March.

#4 After two loses like that do you see Cardinal head coach Tara VanDerveer making adjustments, some changes before they get into their next game?

#5 Talk about a few of the key players that had made a big difference going into the big dance this month and how they’ll be an impact Hannah Jump, Haley Jones and Cameron Brink?

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 The 19th ranked UCLA Bruins pulled off an upset defeating the Stanford Cardinal on Friday night at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas 69-65 getting eliminated in from the tournament.

#3 The Bruins made a comeback on the Cardinal in second half play scoring 18 points in the third quarter and 29 in the fourth quarter to over come a 35-22 first half deficit.

#4 Kiki Rice led the way for the Bruins with 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, and made 12 of 13 free throws. Emily Bessoir was next with 14 points and six rebounds, Charisma Osborne had 12 points.

#5 The Cardinal had faced a number of upsets against USC, Washington, Utah, and UCLA in Pac 12 conference play. How surprising were these loses to coach Tara VanDerveer and the UCLA loss in particular?
