No. 7 Longhorns upend Cardinal men 72-62 in Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge

No. 7 Texas upended Stanford 72-62 Sunday in the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge, played at American Airlines Arena in Dallas.

Michael Jones led the Cardinal with 17 points, hitting 5 of 10 from the field, including two 3-pointers. Brandon Angel and Spencer Jones added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jones also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and had three blocked shots.

The game marked a homecoming for Dallas-area natives Harrison Ingram and Ryan Agarwal. Ingram contributed five points, six rebounds and four assists.

Max Murrell hit a 3 to give Stanford (4-7 overall) an 11-5 lead early in the first half, but the Longhorns (9-1) forged a run to build a 22-17 lead, eventually leading 31-28 at halftime.

Texas led 55-40 at 12:10 of the second half, but the Cardinal responded with a 15-4 run to pull to within 59-56 with 6:27 remaining. The Longhorns hit four jumpers late to put the game away.

Marcus Carr led the Longhorns with 17 points, followed by Timmy Allen and Sir’Jabari Rice with 15 points each. Tyrese Hunter added five assists.

Stanford shot 44 percent (20 of 46) from the field, while the Longhorns made 45 percent (28 of 62). Texas held a 33-32 rebounding edge, and forced 18 Cardinal turnovers.

The Cardinal return to action on Thursday, hosting Loyola Chicago in a home-away-from-home game in Santa Cruz. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried by Pac-12 Networks.

The Cardinal Extinguished UW-Green Bay on the Farm, 85-40

STANFORD, Calif.– The Stanford Cardinal (4-6, 0-2 Pac 12) prevented the visiting University of Wisconsin – Green Bay Phoenix (2-10, 1-1 Horizon) from rising inside Maples Pavilion and manhandled them 85-40.

Stanford jumped on their Midwest opponent quickly in dominating fashion, including a 15-0 run and a lead as lofty as 23 points.

Green Bay shot a dismal 29% from the field the initial 20 minutes of the contest, as well as turning the ball over a whopping 15 times at the behest of the Cardinal stout defense. 

Conversely, Stanford shot an impressive 65% from the floor and never trailed in the first half.

The second half Stanford did not rest on their laurels, they actually increased the insurmountable lead to 45 points, despite shooting a lower percentage in part two of the game.

The Cardinal continued the onslaught, forcing a total of 27 turnovers and holding them to a paltry 27% shooting for the game.

After the Phoenix were aggressively subdued, that large 45-point margin was also the difference in the final score, 85-40 Stanford.

Four players scored in double-figures for Stanford: Senior forward Spencer Jones (10): junior forward Brandon Angel (10) & five rebounds; sophomore guard Jarvis Moss (10) and freshman guard Ryan Agarwal led everyone (11). 

UW – Green Bay was led by junior guard Randy Tucker, with ten points and seven rebounds, while his sophomore teammate Cade Meyer also tallied ten points and grabbed six rebounds.

Stanford will head down to the Lone Star state to take on the Texas Longhorns in Dallas, Sunday December 18, which will be a homecoming of sorts for two players.  Sophomore forward Harrison Ingram (Dallas) and the aforementioned Ryan Agarwal (Coppell) are excited about the road trip.

The Phoenix will stay on the west coast and travel up to Corvallis, OR to take on the Oregon State Beavers, also Sunday December 18.

On the Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 Michael the Stanford Cardinal (3-6) are coming off a heartbreak loss against the Arizona Sun Devils (8-1) in a four point loss 68-64. The Cardinal lacked a couple of buckets to get a shot at the win column but the Sun Devils have been a tough customer all season long winners of eight games.

#2 Michael, one thing the Cardinal have been able to depend on is they are getting production from their shooters we’ll take each player at a time starting with Spencer Jones who finished at the top of the leaderboard with 13 points against ASU.

#3 There’s the always quick to the basket and accurate forward Harrison Ingram head coach Jerod Haase says he likes some of things that Ingram can do on offense.

#4 Guard Michael Jones finished second in scoring against the Sun Devils on Sun Dec 4th with 12 points, Jones is averaging 10.4 pts, 3.0 rebounds, with 2.2 assists. He’s been getting his share of shots of late.

#5 Michael, I know we talked about the Green Bay Phoenix (2-8) the Cardinal’s next non conference game slated for this Friday at Maple Pavilion. The Phoenix are a struggling team they’ve won only two games and Stanford has won only three. The Cardinal have the hone floor how do you see this game shaking out?

On the Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Michael R:

#1 Taking look at this week’s ESPN Invitational on the Memphis Tigers opened the first half with a slim lead in the opening minutes 4-0 but the Stanford Cardinal wasted not time in catching up and taking the lead mid-way through the first 20 minutes 14-9. The Tigers fought back tying the game at 14 and the teams traded leads for most of the opening half.

#2 At 15:42 in the second half, the Tigers took a double digit lead 31-21. The Cardinal continue to fight back but both Harrison Ingram and Brandon Angel were struggling in this game with three and two point efforts midway through the second half.

#3 Angel had 22 points in the Florida State game and Ingram had 24 against Ole Miss. It was a let-down that Stanford could not afford.

#4 Stanford showed the will to win in the final minutes but every time they got to within striking distance, Memphis answered and refused to let Stanford back into the game. The Cardinal had pulled to within four points at 2:12 50-46. Stanford just didn’t have enough to pull this game out. The final was 56-48.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel Dullum: Jones lone Cardinal to score double figures against Cougars on Thursday

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 Despite a game-high 24 points from Spencer Jones, Stanford fell to visiting Washington State 66-60 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

#2 The Cougars’ win avenged an earlier loss to Stanford on Jan. 13.

#3 No other player for the Cardinal (13-8 overall, 6-5 Pac-12) scored in double-figures. Jones made 4 of 8 3-pointers while notching his third 20-plus point game of the season.

#4 Washington State (13-7, 6-3) was paced by Michael Flowers, who scored 22 points, followed by Tyrell Roberts with 12. 

#5 The Cardinal continue their stretch of playing eight games in 17 days when they host Washington on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m.

On the Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, there was very little doubt that the Stanford Cardinal (10-6) were going to expect trouble out of the visiting Arizona Wildcats (15-1) at Maples Pavilion on Thursday night in a crushing 85-57 defeat.

#2 Daniel talk about the Wildcats leading scorer Oumar Ballo who was balling against the Cardinal with a team leading 21 points.

#3 After scoring a team high Arizona guard Azuolas Tubelis who had 32 points against the Utah Utes last Saturday got shutdown by the Cardinal allowing Tubelis with only four points but five other Wildcat players got into double figures.

#4 The loss is Stanford’s second in a row they lost to the Washington Huskies (8-7) and the Thursday night loss to the Wildcats. Should these two consecutive loses be cause of concern for Cardinal head coach Jerod Haase?

#5 Arizona State (6-9) has lost three of their last four games but won their last game they have played defeating Utah (8-10) by two points on Monday 64-62. ASU comes calling at Stanford this Sat Jan 22 for an 8:00 pm PST tip. Tell us how you see this match up?

#1 Daniel, the Stanford Cardinal (8-4) playing their last game on Thu Dec 23 at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu get a long lay off. Their game this coming Sun Jan 2 postponed due to Covid 19 protocols with their next game scheduled for Thu Jan 6 at UCLA (8-1).

#2 Daniel, talk about the long lay off is that an advantage for Stanford getting rest between games or a disadvantage becoming rusty and not seeing competitive action?

#3 The Cardinal have been playing great ball they have won five of their last seven games and getting great offensive support from Spencer Jones who scored 25 points in his last game against the Liberty Flames (8-5) on Thu Dec 23 in Honolulu. He was critical because the Cardinal won by just three points.

#4 Daniel, Jones has been passed the ball quite a bit which shows that the Cardinal have confidence in what he can do with it and pretty much lean on Jones to finish the job in front of the basket.

#5 Stanford faces the Bruins (8-1) Thu Jan 6 and the Bruins have lost only one game this season and that was to Gonzaga getting crushed by 20 points 83-63. Otherwise the Bruins have owned everyone else they’ve faced who do you like in Thursday’s game?

#1 Michael, Sunday’s game between the Stanford Cardinal (8-4) and the Cal Bears (9-5) has been postponed due to Covid 19 protocols. This will be the second straight game that Covid 19 protocols has postponed a game for Stanford the other was in Honolulu for the Diamond Head Classic vs. Vanderbilt on Thu Dec 23.

#2 Cal has been off for ten days since their last game against the Pacific Tigers (5-10) is that an advantage lots of rest before their next game or a disadvantage because they could come back rusty.

#3 In Cal’s last game against the Tigers, the Bears Grant Anticevich led with 25 points and has been a key scorer in some of these recent wins for Cal.

#4 Also in the game against Pacific Andre Kelly and Jordan Shepherd for Cal both finished second in scoring with 11 point they’ve been successful for the Cal offense.

#5 The Pac 12 has scheduled a replacement game for Sun Jan 2nd and the Arizona State Sun Devils will come calling at Haas Pavilion. The Sun Devils (5-7) in their last game Sun Dec 19 took a loss 66-65 to the USF Dons (11-1) in the City in a nailbiter. ASU has won three out of their last four and Cal has won three straight how do you see this match up Sunday.

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:

#1 For Cal Bears (9-5) head coach Mark Fox the first half of their game against the Pacific Tigers (5-10) on Wednesday is more a learning lesson than one of frustration. Fox said after the first half, “It was going to be an ugly Christmas at halftime.” The Bears were trailing the Tigers at the half 30-25.

#2 Fox got them turned around in the second half with the Bears improved defense and the Bears screening out the Tigers top scorers from the first half Jayden Byers (10 points), Jeremiah Bailey (8 points) and Sam Freeman (8 points).

#3 The Bears on offense poured it on with 48 points in the second half and outscored the Tigers 48-23. The Bears wound up getting the 20 point 73-53 win.

#4 Once again Cal’s Grant Anticevich led Cal with 25 points with three additional Cal scorers in double figures, Jalen Celestine (12 pts), Jordan Shepherd (11 pts), and Andre Kelly (11 pts).

#5 Cal is off to Stanford to face the Cardinal (8-4). The Cardinal who had their last game cancelled against the Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4) due Coronavirus protocols at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The Cardinal have won seven of their last 11 games while the Bears have won six of their last seven games. This one on Sunday could be one for the ages the way they’ve been playing.

Stanford Cardinal report: Tourney championship between Cardinal and Vandy cancelled

The Stanford University athletic department announced Saturday that the championship game of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic men’s basketball tournament in Honolulu between the Cardinal and Vanderbilt was cancelled due to “health and safety protocols” within the Stanford program. The game between the two 8-4 teams was declared a no contest. 

The contest was scheduled for a 4:00 pm Hawaiian time on Christmas Day. In addition to the Stanford-Vanderbilt cancellation, Hawaii and Northern Iowa was also called off due to Covid 19 protocols.

Stanford’s next scheduled game is a Pac-12 contest on Sunday, Jan. 2, against California. However, Stanford team-related activities have been put on hold, and the status of future games has yet to be determined.
