#1 Bruce, what is your take away regarding all the criticism that 49ers quarterback Trey Lance had been receiving about his performance last Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

#2 Which Giant team will show up, the Giants before last night who lost 10-2 on Monday night or the Giants of last night who got some hitting and used four pitchers to get a 7-0 shutout of the Tampa Bay Rays.

#3 Bruce what do you make of the possibilities of the Baltimore Orioles relocating. It sounds preposterous but Orioles managing partner John Angelos said recently that the Orioles would never leave Baltimore but Orioles are looking for prime downtown property and although they would get $600 million for Camden Yards improvements Angelos whose wife owns a music entertainment company in Nashville makes the idea of moving all the more interesting.

#4 Bruce the Pac 12 reportedly will incur 11 teams from the ACC. It was first mentioned the four remaining Pac 12 teams Cal, Stanford, Washington State, and Oregon State would join the ACC but that has been reversed with the ACC planning to not charge 11 schools exit fees and move to the Pac 12.

#1 Jerry since last week’s Colorado Buffaloes announcement regarding leaving the Pac 12, Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has not made any statements regarding the Buffaloes and also with additional departures from Washington and Oregon.

#2 Washington State Cougars team president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun said that while it’s disappointing that up to five teams are leaving there is always a possible positive outcome that could unfold. They both are hopeful over the Pac 12’s deal proposal with Apple.

#3 Teams remaining after four teams that have left, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, Kliavkoff will have to do some quick work after this season in getting other schools to join the conference.

#4 In terms of how this works for the Cal the school you cover their alumnus and donors have to be concerned that they no longer will get to see the rival teams especially USC and UCLA.

#5 One interesting note is that Oregon and Washington will be entering the Big Ten on a reduced payout while USC and UCLA will get more than $60 million each for media rights. That’s the rewards of being in the second media market.

#6 Jerry you had a chance to cover two Stanford Cardinal appearances in the Rose Bowl how does this break up of the Pac 12 effect the Rose Bowl tradition.

Washington State edges Stanford 34-31; Cougars get fifth straight win against Cardinal

Washington State Edges Stanford 34-31

Saturday afternoon the Stanford Cardinal (3-4) took on Washington State Cougars (4-3) at Washington State in Pullman. With two similar records to start the game WSU faces a team that has celebrated two upsets this season. The first against USC by the score of 42-28 and the second a stunning win over 9th ranked Oregon 31-24 in overtime. WSU has won it’s last four games against Stanford which included a 49-22 victory the last time they met. WSU continued their winning way with it’s fifth straight win 34-31 in a comeback on Saturday.

WSU has two of the best receivers in the Pac-12, Calvin Jackson Jr. and Travell Harris. These two players rank third and fourth in the conference. Stanford will have to keep both of these players under wraps. The Cardinal defense will have their hands full containing WSU quarterback Jayden de Laura who has been having a banner year.

Stanford came out strong in the first quarter. Quarterback Tanner McKee threw for a 45 yard touchdown to Benjamin Yoroek. Stanford would add a couple of field goals; a 45 yard and 32 yard strike to lead 13-0 at the end of the quarter.

WSU would come roaring back as Jayden de Laura threw three touchdowns in the second quarter. Travell Harris had the first touchdown, a 32 yard pass. De Laura would hit Calvin Jackson Jr. for 31 yards and the third for ten yards to De’Zhaun Stribling. WSU led by the score of 20-13. The Cardinal would block the PAT on the second touchdown. Stanford would kick a 31 yard field goal as the half came to an end. At the half the score was 20-16 in favor of WSU.

WSU had the ball to open the second half. The Stanford defense was able to hold and put the ball back into the hands of their offense. Penalties hurt Stanford on their first drive of the third quarter putting WSU back into the drivers seat. De Laura went right to work driving downfield culminating in a six play drive for 66 yards and their fourth touchdown of the game. The Cougars had extended their lead to 27-16. Stopping De Laura was proving a major challenge for the Stanford defense.

A pass interference called on WSU coupled with some nice play by McKee was huge for Stanford setting them up with a first and goal on the WSU one yard line as the third quarter came to an end.

Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee would rush for the touchdown. The two point conversion was successful and Stanford trailed by a field goal 27-24. McKee was not finished. On Stanford’s next drive he would complete an 8 yard pass to Austin Jones for a touchdown taking the lead 31-27 with 3:42 left in the game. The WSU offense had really cooled letting Stanford back into this game.

Jayden de Laura got back on track in the latter minutes of the fourth quarter and moved his team downfield. Max Borghi rushed for a two yard touchdown giving WSU the lead and the win 34-31. The small window that Stanford had closed completely when McKee fumbled and WSU recovered with 1:30 left on the clock.

It was almost a great finish for the Cardinal but they just could not hold the Cougars at the end.

Next up for Stanford will be the Washington Huskies on Saturday October 30 at Stanford Stadium. The time for kickoff is TBD.

NCAA Football podcast with Michelle:

#1 Michelle, No.2 Georgia Bulldogs (5-0) continue to roll and got a crushing 37-0 victory over the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks (4-1) on Saturday. It was the Razorbacks first defeat of the season and Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett relied mostly on his running backs to score throwing 7-11 for only 72 yards.

#2 Michelle, Stanford Cardinal (3-2) got the best of Oregon Ducks (4-1) on Saturday with a 31-24 overtime win at Stanford Stadium, Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns.

#3 Michelle, talk about ABC Newsman, NFL Fox analyst, and former New York Giant Michael Strahan donating funds to pay for helmets for Texas Southern. Texas Southern broke in the new helmets vs. North American University in Saturday’s game.

Stanford Cardinal Sunday game wrap: Late free throws by Austin lifts Golden Bears past Cardinal 52-50

Paris Austin sank two free throws with 3.2 seconds to play, giving California a 52-50 Pac-12 men’s basketball victory over Stanford at Haas Pavilion.

Austin led the Golden Bears with 15 points, followed by Matt Bradley with 14, and Kareem South with 13. Cal (9-10 overall, 3-3 Pac-12)

For Stanford, it was the Cardinal’s second straight loss as they dropped from first place in the conference. Oscar da Silva led the Cardinal (15-4, 4-2) with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Bears trailed by 11 with 12 minutes remaining in the second half before going on a 6 1/2-minute, 17-2 run. During that run, Austin had six points. Before his game-winning free throws, Austin had made one of two at the line and a 3-pointer.

Stanford nearly regained the lead on its final possession. Bryce Wills nearly scored at the buzzer, but his basket was waived off by the officials. A brief review convinced officials to uphold the original call, and Cal had its third straight home win.

It’s the fifth consecutive season that Cal and Stanford split their two games. The Cardinal lost despite holding a 30-18 advantage in scoring in the paint and a slight 33-32 rebounding edge.

This Thursday, Stanford hosts Oregon State at Maples Pavilion, while Cal hosts No. 12 Oregon at Haas Pavilion.

#3 Houston Cougars (14-4) got a win over the Wichita State Shockers (15-3) 65-54. For the Cougars Fabian White Jr (14), Dejan Jarreau (12) and Marcus Sasser and Quetin Grimes (10).

#1 March Madness is in full tilt: Bears vs. Bears and the Cal women (20-13) lost a tough one at Baylor (33-1) 102-63. It was Cal’s hopes to get this one at Baylor it was too much Baylor who ran off 39 points on Cal. The Lady Bears have had an awesome year.

#2 Duke’s Zion Williamson got a crucial basket on Sunday to help beat Central Florida 77-76 by just that much.

#3 Talk about the Stanford Cardinal women (30-4) and visiting BYU (29-5). This has been another unforgettable season for both teams, who shared identical records before Monday night’s game. Stanford who had the home floor advantage made it pay off with a 72-63 win to advance.

#4 Turning to baseball, the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants concluded their Bay Bridge series to conclude the exhibition season. The A’s will continue their regular season on Thursday afternoon at the Coliseum.

#5 The Giants open their regular season against Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres on Thursday at Petco Park.

#2 Gonzaga Zags got a big win over the Baylor Bears 83-71, Brandon Clarke led the Bears with 36 points.

#3 Wofford stood no chance as Kentucky dominated with a 62-56 win. Former Stanford Cardinal Reid Travis led the Wildcats with 14 points.

Stanford falls to UCLA 79-72 in first round of Pac-12 Tournament

Stanford shot just 35.5% from the field as the UCLA Bruins beat the Cardinal 79-72 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Cardinal shooting woes continued from their last two games of the regular season in which they shot a combined 40% from the field.

“We’ve shown over the last, I guess, three games a pretty anemic shooting display”, said Stanford head coach Jerod Haase.  “And that was certainly a big part of not making shots and not just threes but around the rim.  And we struggled to score the basketball to that level.”

Senior Josh Sharma led the Cardinal with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Marcus Sheffield came off the bench to add 18.

He’s a heck of a player and a heck of a person”, said Haase about Sharma.  “When I first got the job and wanted to play more minutes, and he was a fantastic ambassador to the program and the university. And this year he flourished.  Always tried to do what I asked him to do and did it at a high level.  And it will mean a lot not just for today but for a long time.”

“Obviously it was a disappointing year, especially the last couple of games”, said Sharma.  “But a lot to do with Coach Haase and the rest of the coaching staff, I think my confidence playing the game and my love for the game has never been greater.  And obviously still disappointed that we lost, and that hurts a lot.”

Stanford trailed the entire game, but rallied late in the second half to cut a 14 point halftime deficit to just seven points at the end of the game.

Sheffield on shots falling late in the game, “I think we just started getting a few stops, our energy increased. And once the shots started falling, they just started falling.  So, yeah, we just tried to compete to the end, really.”

With the loss, the Cardinal fell to 15-16 on the season.

“We’re certainly disappointed”, said Haase on the season.  “At this point, though, we’re probably looking back to the entire year and trying to find some of the positives and understand some of the negatives, as well.”

Game Notes:

  • Stanford is now 17-21 all time in the Pac-12 Tournament
  • Stanford lost to UCLA last season in the Pac-12 Tournament 88-77 in the quarterfinals
  • The Cardinal won their only Pac-12 Tournament championship with a 77-66 win over Washington on March 13, 2004
