#1 Joe takes a look at San Jose Sharks Joe Pavelski, who will not play in Game 1 on Friday night, after getting cross-checked and knocked out in Game 7, against the Colorado Avalanche. Pavelski had his teeth knocked out in game one to start the series. How soon do the Sharks expect Pavelski to return?

#2 The Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues opened up their series on Thursday night. The Blues took the first game 3-2 on home ice with goals from Robby Frabbri, and two goals from Vladimir Tarasenko — one in the second period and one in the third.

#3 The Boston Bruins got a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 1 of the second round. The Bruins’ Noel Acciari, and talk about Charlie Coyle, a goal that help tie the game at 2-2 in the third period and Coyle got the game-winner in overtime.

#4 The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders face off tonight for game one in the second round. The Hurricanes are coming off a 4-3 series win over the Washington Capitals, which is not an easy task knocking out the champs. The Islanders got a 4-0 sweep over the Pittsburgh Penguins in round one.

#3 The Colorado Avalanche advanced to the next round. The Calgary Flames who came in with their backs to the wall 3-1 in the series just couldn’t hold off the Avalanche and were eliminated on Friday night

#4 Series is tied between the Stars and Predators 2-2. The Stars have Tyler Seguin, who led the team with goals and the Preds leading scorer with Viktor Arvidsson, during the regular season. How do things shape up for Game 5 for Saturday night?

#5 The St. Louis Blues lead the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 going into Game 6 on Saturday night. The Jets’ Mark Scheifele has been leading on offense and paving the way for the Jets to stay alive in this one and for the Blues’ Vladimir Tarasenko, who has led the Blues in scoring, did some damage in the first round.

On the NHL Stanley Cup Playoff with Matt Harrington:

#1 The Columbus Blue Jackets are explosive. They have taken the first two games of the first round from the best regular season team the Tampa Bay Lightning. Can the CBJ’s repeat the same performance on the Bolt’s ice in game three?

#2 For the Jackets’ Matt Duchene had the hot hand with a goal and three assists and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 23 shots in the 5-1 win in Columbus.

#3 The New York Islanders’ Jordan Eberle and Josh Bailey scored a goal each in the third period against the Pittsburgh Penguins to take a 2-0 lead. The Isles goalie Robin Lehner stopped an amazing 32 shots.

#4 The St. Louis Blues have already jumped to a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference first round with another win over the Winnipeg Jets. The Blues’ Pat Maroon and Ryan O’Reilly scored big and goaltender Jordan Binnington stopped 26 shots in the 4-3 win. Jets have their backs to the wall.

#5 The San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer called a interference call a travesty and the reason for the loss of the game to the Vegas Golden Knights 5-3. Was it more the interference call or the ability of the Knights to be able to come back tie and add two more insurance goals to win and tie the series?

#1 Friday night’s NHL action: The Columbus Blue Jackets clinched for the postseason as they defeated the New York Rangers 3-2. Jackets netminder Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 25 of 27 shots and the Jackets. The Jackets’ Ryan Dzingle and Artemi Panarin had a coach goal each in the third period to put the CBJs over the top.

#2 In a game that was not even close, the Chicago Blackhawks poured it on the Dallas Stars 6-1. The Hawks’ Patrick Kane scored twice, Dominick Kahun, Chris Kunitz, Dylan Strome, and Slater Koekoek all scored a goal each for Chicago.

#3 The Anaheim Mighty Ducks got a mighty win over the Los Angeles Kings by three goals on Friday night 5-2. The Ducks’ Carter Rowney started things off with a goal in the first period, Korbinian Holzer and Daniel Sprong had a goal each in the second period, Sam Steel and Jakob Silfverberg scored one a piece in the third period for Anaheim.

#4 Saturday, the Tampa Bay Lighting (62-16-4) and the Boston Bruins (43-24-9) in the NHL Game of the Week. These two titans have been battlers all season long. The Bolts are the winningest team in the NHL and the B’s have been one of the top teams all season.

#5 The Vancouver Canucks are in St. Louis later Saturday night. Elias Pettersson likes to light the lamp. At 20 years old, he leads the Canucks with 65 assists and 27 goals for the Blues’ Ryan O’Reilly leads the team with 75 points and Vladimir Tarasenko leads St. Louis with 32 goals.

#1 The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Phil Kessel scored his 24th goal of the season. Brian DuMoulin, Patric Hornqvist, Nick Bjugstad (11), Jake Guentzel (36), all scored in the Pens’ win over the Buffalo Sabres 5-0.

#2 The New York Islanders got a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens as the Isles’ Adam Pelech (5) and Anders Lee (25) scored for New York.

#3 The Washington Capitals’ Brett Connolly scored two goals–#18 and #19–to help lead the Caps in a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

#4 The Ottawa Senators got a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Blues. The Sens got goals from Christian Wolanin (4) and Chris Tierney (9). Jake Allen started in goal for the shutout for Senators.

#5 The red-hot Tampa Bay Lighting (54-13-4) defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The Bolts’ Nikita Kucherov scored twice for #34 and #35 of the season.

Sharks Beat Blues 3-2 in OT, Move to 1st in West

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime at SAP Center Saturday. The win nudged the Sharks up to first place in the Pacific Division and the Western Conference. Two goals came from Timo Meier and the overtime winner came from Kevin Labanc. St. Louis goals came from Pat Maroon and Brayden Schenn. The Sharks’ Martin Jones made 17 saves, while the Blues’ Jake Allen made 30 saves in the loss. Joe Thornton tied Stan Mikita on the NHL’s all time points list with his assist on Timo Meier’s first goal of the game. Meier also set a record for the most NHL goals in a season by a Swiss-born player.

After the game, Meier said:

It took us 60 minutes and some extra to win this game but our team, full four lines, all the guys showed up today. It was a tough battle, you know, they didn’t give us a lot of room out there. They’re a good forecheck team so it took our full lineup tonight and our best game to win this one.

Speaking of how the team has been performing, Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said:

It’s that time of year, there’s 15 games left or less, we’re trying to catch Calgary, we’re trying to win the division and important games. I think everyone has adversity, we’ve had some flu, and some injuries and things but guys have taken it as a challenge and really stepped up. I think we’ve had some gutsy wins here.

Both teams were missing significant pieces from their lineups. The Sharks were still without Erik Karlsson and Evander Kane, while the Blues were missing their leading goal scorer Vladimir Tarasenko.

The Blues scored first with a power play goal. Pat Maroon was in the right place to take advantage of a puck that came off the glass and landed by the goal post. It was his fifth of the season. Assists went to Colton Parayko and Vince Dunn.

The Sharks answered with their own power play goal at 16:23. With the power play winding down, Meier caught a pass from Joe Thornton and took a shot behind him. The puck went under goalie Jake Allen for Meier’s 25th of the season. Thornton and Tim Heed got the assists.

Meier added another in the final minute of the first period at 19:33. Logan Couture was in the corner when he made a backhand pass to Meier right in front of the net. Meier found an opening and put it away. Assists went to Couture and Tomas Hertl.

The Sharks led in shots in the first 10-8. Each team scored on a power play and each team killed one penalty. The Sharks had the edge in the face off circle as well, winning 53% of the time.

The second period was almost uneventful, up to the final two minutes. The Blues got a power play when Tomas Hertl was called for hooking. They tied the game at 19:57 of the period. Barclay Goodrow had the puck on his stick and was about to move it away from the goal mouth. Instead, Brayden Schenn came in and knocked it off of Goodrow’s stick and into the net. It was Schenn’s 13th of the season.

The Sharks lost their edge in face offs in the second. The Blues won an impressive 73% of them. The teams were even with six shots each.

Neither team scored in the third, but the Sharks outshot the Blues 15-4. The Blues won 60% of the face offs. The Blues continued to win those face offs in overtime.

Kevin Labanc scored the overtime winner with the team’s second shot of the period. Tomas Hertl gave him the puck in the neutral zone and, after carrying it across the line, Labanc passed it to Couture on the left wing. Couture gave it back quickly, just as Allen moved to block a shot from Couture. Labanc was able to get the shot off before Allen could move back across. The assists went to Couture and Hertl.

The Sharks next play on Monday in St. Paul, Minnesota against the Wild at 5:00 PM PT.

#1 The San Jose Sharks continue to dominate the Montreal Canadiens with a three-goal win on Thursday night 5-2.

#2 The Sharks haven’t lost a home game to the Habs since Nov. 23, 1999, winning 12 straight over Montreal during that span. It was also San Jose’s eighth straight win overall in the series.

#3 For the Sharks’ Tomas Hertl, he scored his 30th goal, which is a career high and he’s having himself a great offensive season.

#4 The Sharks’ goaltender Marty Jones allowed two goals, but stopped 37 Montreal shots.

#5 The Sharks host the St. Louis Blues Saturday night at SAP Center. The Blues have been playing .500 hockey, winning four of their last eight games. Is St. Louis’ cup half full or half empty?
