#1 Matt, how important was it to delay the Holiday shutdown one more day as NHL action returns on Tuesday night instead of Monday night.

#2 The NHL Discover Winter Classic is on target to be played between St Louis Blues (17-9-5) and Minnesota Wild (9-19-2) at Target Field is still scheduled to be played on Sat Jan 1 barring no further Covid interruptions.

#3 According to former NHL great Wayne Gretzky said that Washington Capitals (18-6-7) Alexander Ovechkin will pass him up for most goals scored. Ovechkin could do it with 143 goals remaining. Ovechkin has 22 goals in 31 games this season. Gretzky said he’s on his way to 40-50 goals this season there is no he will break the record.

#4 It’s really no surprise that the NHL called off it’s players from participating in the Beijing 2020 Winter Olympics due to the surge in positive tests for Covid 19. The Feb 6-22 Olympic schedule now scratched the league will use those dates to make up games that were postponed.

#5 The Boston Bruins (14-10-2) surprisingly are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division three points out of a playoff spot. The Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy said that there is a lot of hockey to be played yet and their looking for some consistency to get right back in the hunt again.

#1 Not since the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic in March 2020 has the NHL seen so many games postponed. The NHL has postponed two more teams all games for the Colorado Avalanche (17-8-2) and Florida Panthers (18-7-4).

#2 The Calgary Flames (15-7-6) have shutdown their operations extending it from Dec 24-26. The Flames announced that they have had no further positive tests today. The Flames next scheduled game is against the Edmonton Oilers (17-11-0) on Dec 27th.

#3 Winnipeg Jets (13-11-5) head coach Paul Maurice resigned on Friday saying the team needs a new voice. That new voice was found when Jet’s general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff called new interim head coach Dave Lowry to take over on Thursday. Lowry is the father of Jets forward Adam Lowry.

#4 The Vegas Golden Knights (19-11-0) Jonathan Marchessault got the game winner in round three of a shootout against the New York Rangers (19-7-4) at Madison Square Garden for a 3-2 win. The win was the Knights third straight win.

#5 The St Louis Blues (17-8-5) picked up a home and home sweep against the Dallas Stars (13-12-2) 4-1 on Friday night in St Louis. The Blues Vladimir Tarasenko scored two goals and goaltender Charlie Lindgren stopped 26 shots.

#1 Mary Lisa the San Jose Sharks (8-6-1) Timo Meier has had a strong start getting a goal and an assist against the Minnesota Wild (10-5-0) he had a good outing against the Wild and he’s been coming on strong offensively.

#2 James Reimer was key in goal with 26 saves holding the Wild to just one goal in the 4-1 win how would you evaluate him in goal he’s had the hot hand of late.

#3 Sharks team captain Logan Couture said the effort against the Wild was great and that their now playing their style of hockey.

#4 Mary Lisa talk about the Sharks jumping right out of the gate in that first period opening up the period with two goals which is crucial when your jumping on top of a good team like the Wild who have won of late.

#5 Sharks are in St Louis to face the St Louis Blues (8-5-2) the Blues are on a four game losing streak and just recently lost to a struggling Arizona Coyotes (2-13-1) have the Blues had injuries and might have their hands full when they get to San Jose on Thursday night at SAP.

#1 The last two goals in the third period made all the difference for the San Jose Sharks (6-3-0) to get a two goal win over the Buffalo Sabres (5-3-1) on Tuesday night at SAP Center for the 5-3. All things considered with seven Sharks players and head coach Bob Boughner out for Covid 19 protocols.

#2 The Sharks grabbing two goals in the first period certainly set the tone with Jonathan Dahlen at 7:25 and Ryan Merkley at 12:49.

#3 In the third period the Sharks got two goals one each from Mike Ferraro at 6:02 and Tomas Hertl scoring his fifth goal of the season at 11:46

#4 Last night’s game was the Sharks all time lowest attendance in their franchise history 10,059 still a lively crowd as San Jose has now won two straight games in spite of drawing such a small crowd.

#5 The St Louis Blues (6-1-0) are coming to SAP Center on Thursday night. The Blues edged the Chicago Blackhawks (1-7-2) on Saturday night 1-0. The Blues are on a roll winning six of their last seven games how do you see this match up between the Blues and the Sharks.

#1 The Seattle Kraken’s Haydn Fleury picked up his first two goal game of his career as Seattle won it’s third game of the season against the Minnesota Wild 4-1.

#2 Carolina Hurricanes get a 3-0 shutout and win their first six games the best start in their team history at 6-0-0. The Canes goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 33 shots by the Boston Bruins. The Hurricanes are doing so well that Andersen became the seventh goaltender in NHL history to win each of the Hurricanes first six games to start the year.

#3 The Colorado Avalanche edged the St Louis Blues 4-3 at the Enterprise Center in St Louis. The Aves got help from J.T. Compher who scored two goals. It was the first time the Blues have lost a game this season.

#4 The Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom saved 45 shots against the Pittsburgh Penguins for a shutout at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh for the Flames fifth win of the season. The Flames are in first place in the Pacific division getting a 4-0 win.

#5 The resignation of former Florida Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville sent shockwaves throughout the NHL. Quenneville was head coach in 2010 of the Chicago Blackhawks when Kyle Beach made claims of being sexually assaulted by assistant coach Brad Aldrich. Aldrich threatened Beach that if he reported the assault his NHL career would be over. Beach went ahead and made the complaints and nothing really was done about it as the Blackhawks were focusing on winning the Stanley Cup at the time.

#1 The San Jose Sharks longtime veteran Patrick Marleau is hoping for the San Jose Sharks to get enough wins to get into playoff position before the NHL trade deadline on April 12th so he might have a shot at breaking former late great Gordie Howe’s games played record at 1767, Marleau has played in 1751 games and has a 882 consecutive game streak going.

#2 Marleau said he would like to do it as a Shark as they Sharks are 11-13-4 7th in the NHL west the Sharks have their work cut out for them if they want to get into playoff position.

#3 The Sharks battled hard with the St Louis Blues (15-10-5) on Friday night but couldn’t hold on in a 2-1shootout loss. The Blues in fourth place in the NHL west snapped a five game losing streak with their win over the Sharks on Friday.

#4 Matt taking a look at other NHL news the Boston Bruins had four players enter the NHL Covid protocol on Friday. The Bruins games for Saturday vs. the Buffalo Sabers and Tuesday vs. the New York Islanders were postponed.

#5 Talk about the Bruins practice facilities shuttered and the Bruins players Sean Kuraly, David Pastrnak, Jake DeBrusk, David Krejci, and Craig Smith all are on the Covid list. The Bruins are expected to open up their practice facilities on Wednesday.
