Curry’s 62 point effort leads Warriors to victory over Blazers 137-122

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors, who were blown out by the Portland Trail Blazers on New Year’s day, bounced back to win 137-122. Stephen Curry had one of his best games ever in his fantastic career. Curry knocked down a career-high 62 points in 36 minutes of action Sunday night. The two-time NBA MVP recorded his seventh-career 50-point plus game.

The Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr had to think he saw the Warriors that won three NBA championships in five years. With Draymond Green back in the lineup, the Warriors excelled on defense.

Draymond also helped set up the offense as he was credited with eight assists. They moved the ball well, and that allowed Curry to make six threes in 12 tries. On defense, the Warriors outrebounded the Blazers 60-51.

They had four steals and seven blocks. The Warriors rookie sensation, James Wiseman, had his first career double-double. He kicked in with 12 points and eleven rebounds. The Blazers knocked 20 threes in Friday’s win over the Warriors. The Warriors’ defense held them to 14 Sunday night.

The Warriors, who were blown out in the first quarter Friday, wanted to get off to a good start Sunday night. The Blazers took an early 9-2 lead. Behind buckets by Curry, Kelly Oubre, Jr, and Andrew Wiggins, the Warriors rallied to tie the game.

Wiseman made a deuce, and Curry connected on a three to increase the lead to 17-12. The Blazers tied the game twice, 38, and 40 early in the second quarter. Eric Paschall made a bucket to put Golden Stae ahead 42-40.

Portland never regained the lead after that play. Curry, Wiggins, and Wiseman paced the Warrior attack from that point. The Warriors finished the first half with a 12 point lead 66-54. Curry scored 31 points to propel the Warriors into the lead.

The Warriors were able to keep the Blazers at bay in the third quarter. The Blazers’ all-star backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and C.J.McCollum started to connect on three-point shots. Steph Responded with threes of his own. The Warriors increased the lead to fourteen 97-83 at the end of the period. Curry had 45 at this point in the game.

The Blazers did not wilt. Lillard and McCollum had the talent to bring the Blazers back from a 14-point deficit. Curry had other thoughts as he recorded 17 points in the final stanza. The Blazers closed the gap to seven 113-106. Curry, Wiggins, and Oubre all made baskets to prevent the Blazers from getting any closer. The Warriors were able to cruise to victory by a final of 137-122.

Game Notes and stats: Curry was the man Sunday night. As mentioned earlier, Curry finished with a career-high 62 points. He took 31 shots and made 18. He was six for 12 from behind the three-point arc.

The one sour note was that he missed a free throw to end his team-record 80 consecutive free throws. Draymond Green, playing in his second game of the season, looked like the Draymond of old.

He did not score very much, he recorded only one point, but he had three rebounds and eight assists. Andrew Wiggins had 21 points, seven boards, and two assists. Kelly Oubre had, perhaps, his best game as a Warrior. Oubre had 17 points and five rebounds. He was a force on both ends of the floor to help the Warriors to the win. Eric Paschall had ten points and three rebounds. Wiseman 12 points and 11 boards.

Damian Lillard paced the Blazers with 32 points. He made six threes. C.J.McCollum finished with 28 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. The Warriors’ defense held Josef Nurkic in check. Nurkic had seven points and six rebounds. The Blazers’ backup center, Enes Kanter, played very well. He had a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony had 10.

With the win, the Warriors are 3-3 for the year. The Blazers drop to 3-3. The Warriors meet the Sacramento Kings at the Chase Center Monday night. The game will start at 7 pm.

49ers lose 26-23 to the Seahawks, finish season 6-10

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon breaks up a pass intended for Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf (14) in the second half Sun Jan 3, 2021 (Rick Scuteri / The Associated Press)

GLENDALE, Ariz — San Francisco’s defense held the Seahawks scoreless for 27 minutes before the Seahawks woke up, scoring three touchdowns in the final period to slip by the 49ers 26-23 on Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium to close out the regular season.

Seattle (12-4) sweeps the regular season series from the 49ers. The Seahawks will be the three-seed in the playoffs where they will face the Los Angeles Rams on Wild Card Weekend in Seattle. This will be the third matchup between the two NFC West foes, with both teams splitting the regular season series 1-1.

Entering the fourth quarter, the 49ers held a 9-6 lead over the Seahawks. 49ers running back Jeff Wilson Jr. would extend San Francisco’s lead to 16-6 on a 7-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

But Seattle responded behind quarterback Russell Wilson and wide receiver Tyler Lockett big fourth quarter. Wilson avoided a tough 49ers pass rush, finding Lockett for a diving 6-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone capping off a 8-play, 75-yard drive cutting San Francisco’s lead to 16-12. Seattle kicker Jason Myers missed the extra point.

Following a 49ers’ punt on the ensuing drive, Wilson marched the Seahawks 85 yards on 14 plays and scored the go-ahead touchdown on fourth down on Wilson’s 4-yard toss to Lockett. Wilson completed 20-of-36 passing for 181 yards. Lockett finished with 12 catches for 90 yards.

Running back Alex Collins for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:49 left in the game to push Seattle’s lead to 26-16

San Francisco (6-10) falls to 1-7 in home games played at Levi’s Stadium and at State Farm Stadium this season. The 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention a few weeks ago and have been based in Arizona for more than a month because of coronavirus restrictions in Santa Clara county.

C.J. Beathard completed 25-of-37 passing for 273 yards and a touchdown, but his fumble late in the fourth quarter would set up Collins’ touchdown. Tristan Vizcaino, making his first career start, booted his first three NFL field goals after signing with the 49ers earlier this week.

It was Beathard’s second-straight start, who helped the 49ers beat the Arizona Cardinals last week.

After rushing for a career-high 183 yards on 22 carries last week, Wilson rushed for 76 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. With the 49ers trailing 26-16, Wilson caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Beathard to make the score 26-23.

Wilson finishes the season with 600 yards rushing and seven rushing touchdowns on 126 carries, becoming the fourth different player to lead the 49ers in rushing under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He follows Carlos Hyde, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert.

When you add in his two receiving touchdowns, Wilson has scored a career-high nine touchdowns this year.

By Jeremiah Salmonson

On Saturday, the NBA community is mourning the loss of Paul Westphal. The legendary coach passed away at the age of 70. Westphal was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

The Sacramento Kings are set for another matchup in this young NBA season. Last game, the Kings were on the losing end against the Houston Rockets on New Year’s eve.The Kings battled through the whole game. Unfortunately, James Harden went off in the last few minutes of the game. The Rockets were able to defeat the Kings 122-119 in Houston.

The Kings didn’t fare much better on Saturday night in Houston taking a second loss to the Rockets 102-94.

However, unfortunate news for the Kings was revealed over the last couple of days. Standout rookie Tyrese Haliburton was not be available for the rest of the road trip. He has an injury to his wrist and his tests came back negative. Haliburton is going to be looked at whether he can play or not on Mon Jan 4th in San Francisco against the Golden State Warriors.

In the first half, the Kings kept things close with the Rockets. The Kings matched the Rockets in the first quarter scoring 36 points. Neither team played much defense and the offenses were getting all the shots they wanted. The second quarter was very similar. The Kings and Rockets both scored 28 points to go into halftime tied at 64 apiece.

In the second half, the Rockets pulled away from the Kings. The Rockets outscored the Kings 19-17 in the third quarter as the offense in the game evaporated. Neither team was able to get into an offensive rhythm and both teams played better defense. In the fourth, the Rockets sealed the fate of the Kings. They outscored the Kings 19-13.

De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 23 points in the game. John Wall led the way for the Rockets with 28 points.

Up Next: The Kings will continue this road trip in San Francisco at Chase Center against Golden State on Monday at 7 PM PST.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Superbowl Wayne: Carr’s miraculous comeback from groin injury to play close game last Sunday

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) confers with Raiders head coach Jon Gruden during last Sat Dec 26th, 2020 game against the Miami Dolphins at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Superbowl Wayne:

#1 Superbowl how impressive was it for Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to come back from a relatively serious groin injury and play a close game against the Miami Dolphins.

#2 Carr was supposed to be out for ten to 14 weeks but the idea that he was feeling better was really remarkable within itself.

#3 The Raiders just missed last Sun’s game against the Dolphins as the Dolphins scored 13 in the fourth quarter and it was just enough to get them over the top 26-25.

#4 Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa started the game throwing for 94 yards and touchdown and Dolphins back up quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick 182 yards and touchdown just enough to get by Vegas.

#5 The Raiders close out their regular season Sunday against the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium. The Broncos have lost five straight including their last game against the Los Angeles Chargers 19-16. The Broncos quarterback Drew Lock threw for 264 yards and two interceptions. Taking the two interceptions it’s remarkable that Lock and the Broncos were even in breathing distance from the Chargers losing by a field goal.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Matt Harrington: NHL to open two outdoor games in Tahoe; How the Sharks opening up first 10 games on the road will work

The San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau in this Feb 22, 2020 photo skating against the New York Islanders will be doing a long tour of duty as the Sharks will open their first of ten games of the season on the road starting in Arizona on Jan 14, 2021 in Glendale (AP News photo)

On the Sharks podcast with Matt:

#1 Matt, Welcome back to another addition of the NHL season and hope your off season was great. Just wanted to start with the NHL considering opening the season up with two outdoor games in Lake Tahoe that won’t involve the San Jose Sharks and with no fans.

#1 The San Jose Sharks are scheduled to open their first ten games on the road because of San Jose and Santa Clara County has a shutdown ban and a ten day quarantine for anyone coming in and out of the County.

#2 Matt, talk about the advantages and disadvantages of playing away from your home rink for the first ten games of the season.

#3 The first ten games to open for the season is none too easy as it would be for any NHL that would open it’s season on the road, the Sharks will play two sets of games Jan 14 and 16th in Arizona, 18th and 20th in St Louis, 22 and 24th in Minnesota, and the 26 and 28th in Colorado.

#4 Last season for the post season the NHL held a very successful bubble in Toronto and Edmonton they won’t be doing anything like that this season because they won’t be able to see their families for a good six months in a bubble format like that. However where safety is concerned will travel put games and players at risk this season?

#5 In terms of getting these games going and getting players on and off planes and all the physical contact with each other in games will this still be a bigger undertaking as opposed to the way things were handled in the bubble during post season in Canada?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Saleh most likely to end up as head coach in the NFL after season; A look at Seahawks-49ers match up

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh shares a hug with cornerback Richard Sherman (25). Saleh is vying for a head coaching job in the NFL. (file photo from USA Today)

On the 49ers podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, a lot of things to consider in the off the season for the 49ers starting with the 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh who is being sought after by a number of NFL teams to be their head coach.

#2 If Saleh leaves the 49ers the 49ers do have a short list as to who could replace him as defensive coordinator, DeMeco Ryans (49ers linebackers coach), Gus Bradley (Chargers defensive coordinator), Vic Fangio (Broncos head coach), Dan Quinn (former Atlanta Falcons head coach), and Raheem Morris (Falcons interim head coach).

#3 Head coach Kyle Shanahan had discussed possibilities in the event starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was to get hurt during the 2021 season and how they might look for a back up for Garoppolo and the Niners would have to free up some $26.9 million in cap room to shop for a viable second string quarterback.

#4 Quarterback CJ Beathard did have a good outing in his win against the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday at Glendale but for him to get some notoriety he’s going to have to out there again against the Seattle Seahawks and really is going to have to torch them on yards passing and getting the ball in the end zone and to keep that up going into camp next season.

#5 The Seahawks come into State Farm Stadium with a three game winning streak. The Seahawks are coming off a 20-9 win against the Los Angeles Rams. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 225 yards and one touchdown. Jeremiah taking a look at this Sunday’s last game for the 49ers how do you see this match to close out the season?

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Fidel Castro and Baseball – Never a Serious Prospect-

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro is the subject of That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary of what would have been if Castro played baseball instead of ruling Cuba (USA Today file photo)

Fidel Castro and Baseball – Never a Serious Prospect-

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

There is one thing that unites most men born in Cuba; baseball. For years there have been stories about Fidel Castro playing baseball (like that was something extraordinary) but in Cuba if you are born a male, if by the time you are ready for T-Ball as a kid and you show little interest for baseball, there is a good chance your family might take you to a psychiatrist.

Just like in Brasil, where fútbol/soccer is played religiously, same thing happens in Cuba, but with baseball. As a kid we played for hours after school in Havana, some played baseball for more hours than attended school.

It is part of the DNA of each of us Cubans. However, some write the story of Castro’s refusing a major league team contract, because he wanted to study law. That has as much truth as the promise he made when he took over Cuba, and told the people during a long speech that there will be free elections in the country.

Castro’s biographers and those that saw him “play” agree that as a pitcher he threw hard, but was wild. He never even made the Junior Varsity team of the University of Havana and the story that the New York Giants authorized Alex Pompez (their man in Cuba) to offer a $5,000 bonus to Fidel Castro was ridiculous since no Latin prospect were offered that kind of money in 1950.

In 1950 the average salary of a Major League Baseball player was approximately $13,000. In 1959 before a game between the Havana Sugar Kings and the Rochester Red Wings (AAA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) in Cuba, Fidel Castro took to the mound with Los Barbudos team (The Bearded Ones) for a two inning exhibition game against a military squad team.

He pitched the two innings, striking out two and grounding to shortstop for an out during his only at bat. And that was his whole “career” as a baseball player. No more, no less. Castro controlled and ruled Cuba, but the narrative about his baseball “career”, is one that he could not control.

Because, its very simple, he wasn’t good enough and was never a serious prospect. Until 1960 Cuba was heavily scouted by major league scouts of many organizations. The most famous scout in Cuba was Joe Cambria, aka “Papa Joe”.

Cambria worked for the Washington Senators and had a yearly-permanent residence on the island. Cambria signed Roberto Estalella, René Monteagudo, Roberto Ortíz and others who went on to play with the Senators at the beginning of their major league careers.

If Fidel Castro showed any serious promise you can be assured Joe Cambria would have signed him, because until that time, Cuba was “número uno”, sending their talent to the US. A year later, in 1961 Castro banned all professional sports in Cuba, including baseball.

Since then, all athletes in Cuba are basically property of the government. They cannot travel freely in or out of the island without the authorization of the government. Many Cubans currently playing in the Major Leagues have escaped the island, or defected while their team was playing an international tournament.

Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016 and according to Forbes, he had a fortune of at least $1 billion which was kept in shells slush funds around the world. For decades he blamed the US for just about everything under the sun, including Capitalism, however he was the biggest Capitalist in Cuba.

In that case he was consistent with politicians, his hypocrisy was palpable, even today we can see how hypocrisy and politicians go hand and hand. Yes, he did loved baseball, but as I stated before, in Cuba to love baseball is a given, is like asking any kid if they like ice-cream.

The fact remains that Fidel Castro never played any type of professional baseball in Cuba or outside the island. Today many Cuban baseball stars make less than $2,000 a year and some of them (Liván Hernández, plus others have told me) have other duties aside from just playing baseball, like driving the bus among their “requirements.”

Baseball is a game of failure, where even the most successful fail more times than none. For Fidel Castro, even as much as he loved the game he decided it was easier for him to become a communist dictator than a good baseball player.

Even Hollywood has never attempted to do a film on the topic of Fidel and his baseball “career”, which would have been a fantasy and that is a Hollywood specialty. My favorite quote on this topic, comes from Hall-of-Famer Monte Irvin, who played for the New York Giants and also for Alacranes del Almendares in the 1948-49 Cuban winter league in Havana, once said that is he had other Cuban leaguers of the late ’40s known that the young student Castro who hung around Havana ballparks had designs of being an autocratic dictator, they would have been well served to make him an umpire.

Happy New 2021. Stay tuned and stay well.
