In Oakland’s last away game of the season, the Oakland Roots faced the San Diego Loyal in regular season play at Torero Stadium in San Diego. Oakland currently sits in eighth place in the West, one point clear of the playoff line and they had hoped to keep their spot as they had this game in hand but it got away in a crushing 4-2 loss. The Roots do have one last game at home to close the season.

The first goal came on a sideline throw and was then headed to Bryan Tamacas who shoots on one touch past the goaltender and in for a nice goal and Oakland goes up 1-0, but that’s not new for them, can it be held? The answer is no as San Diego hit the equalizer three minutes after Oakland’s when Joe Corona hit a header past Paul Blanchette to make it 1-1.

Not even a minute later, San Diego scored their second goal when a beautiful attack led to a goal from Ronaldo Damus and the game felt out of hand early, 2-1 San Diego. The avalanche wasn’t over for San Diego as Damus hit his second goal, this time sneaking a one time shot past Blanchette and the frustration was visible on the Roots.

In the 44th minute, the SD Loyal delivered a fourth goal when Perez scored his first goal of the night and the energy was alive in San Diego, but Oakland’s energy was sucked out. The halftime whistle blew and it was clear who was on top and that was San Diego. Oakland needed to adjust, but momentum wasn’t in their favor.

The second half was Oakland desperately fighting for scorching opportunities, but no cigar. San Diego knew all they had to do was run this clock out and play the game that got them to this point. Oakland wasn’t going anywhere without a fight as they hit a quick goal to make it 4-2 and the Roots ran the ball to center to not waste any time, but the damage was already done.

With five minutes in stoppage time left, San Diego was clearly in control and Oakland fought hard, but not hard enough and when the final whistle was blown the game ended 4-2 San Diego and Oakland looked crushed.

How this affects Oakland’s playoff chances hangs in the balance, but with one more game next week against El Paso, the fate of the Roots is on the line as we close this season October 14th.

Oakland Roots Draw 2-2 Against San Antonio After Being Up 2 At Half

Oakland Roots couldn’t hold the 2-0 lead and came away with a 2-2 draw against San Antonio FC at CSU East Bay (@oaklandrootssc image)

Hayward, CA – Four games remaining in the season and Oakland is still fighting for a final spot in the playoff picture. Tonight the Oakland Roots face San Antonio FC at CSU East Bay in the final game of September.

The Roots started with an amazing goal to open the game nine minutes in as Guillermo Diaz hit a deep pass to Johnny Rodriguez where he hit a fantastic spin kick to score, 1-0 Oakland. A minute later Anuar Palaez stole the ball from a San Antonio player and immediately followed up with a laser shot to score the second goal for the Roots, 2-0.

The remainder of the first half was San Antonio trying hard to develop an offense and they let some shots go, but none hit the back of the net and when the whistle blew for a halftime, Roots were up 2-0.

The second half was the make or break half for Oakland. They needed to secure a W and lately they haven’t been able to do that in the second half conceding more goals than they’ve scored. San Antonio wanted to keep that streak going ten minutes into the second half, Santiago Patino scored the first goal for San Antonio off a gorgeous shot past Paul Blanchette making it 2-1.

As we proceeded through the second half, Oakland got more physical to hold off San Antonio and this strategy was successful all the way until stoppage time when a long pass was volleyed to Toni Oluwaseyei who scored off a straight shot past Blanchette for the equalizer. 2-2!!!

Oakland’s struggle to hold off opponents in the second half when they have a lead has been what has kept their playoff chances in limbo. The final whistle blew, but not without a little bit of controversy. On the last shot of the game, San Antonio claimed there was a foul to the point where a San Antonio player got in the ref’s face and was awarded a red card. Red card aside the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

With only three games left, Oakland is fighting for their playoff spot and the next game on their path to the playoffs is against Orange County Sporting Club in Irvine, CA on October 4th.

Ducks Stop Sharks Comeback 4-2; SJ at .500 in exhibition play at 1-1

San Jose, CA – A preseason game between San Jose Sharks (1-1) and Anaheim Ducks (1-1) and the Sharks are coming off a victory over the Kings and now look to keep developing this roster as they approach the season opener against the defending champion Golden Knights. The Ducks won at SAP Center in San Jose with a two goal 4-2 win. Both teams are at .500 in exhibition play at 1-1.

The Ducks and Sharks started off the first period with a back and forth pace, but then the Ducks got on the board first with a wrist shot past Sharks goalie Mackenzie Blackwood by Anaheim’s Brett Leason (assisted by Sam Carrick and Jacob Perreault), 1-0 Ducks.

Anaheim quickly followed up that goal with another one, but this one off a wrist shot right off the blue line and this goal was scored by defenseman Olen Zellweger (assisted by Ilya Lyubushkin and Sam Carrick). 2-0 Ducks and the avalanche wouldn’t stop for Anaheim.

A goal for Andrew Agozzino assisted by Pavol Regenda and Olen Zellweger to put the Ducks up 3-0 and at this point the game still had seven minutes on the clock to go. When the first period came to an end, the biggest takeaway for the Sharks was that the offense created opportunities, especially the Eklund/Strum/Halttunen line, but the defense letting the Ducks capitalize on opportunities they created left the offense playing from behind and playing from behind early.

The second period started with more intensity for the Sharks and more shots in less time. San Jose had half the shots they did in the first period and they did it before the period was halfway over. Playing a 4 on 3 powerplay William Eklund scored the first goal for the Sharks showing why he is one of the best young guys in the San Jose organization.

The goal was assisted by Kevin Lebanc and Shakir Mukhamadullin who has been showing a great display of passing in the first two periods. 3-1 being the score at this point in the second period. Penalties for Anaheim became a factor in the second period as they tallied up three within two minutes of each other and this gave San Jose some momentum to hopefully generate more offense.

Blackwood’s second period was a shutout, but a key point of this second period shoutout was the Sharks defense keeping Anaheim away from rebounding the missed shots. San Jose in both periods have accumulated six shots a period and compared to the Ducks’ 18 shots on goal, the Sharks seem to be still figuring out the system that they want to run, but it’s all coming together.

The final period started with the Sharks attacking and the feeling in the arena was that there would be another goal for San Jose and almost four minutes into the third, that feeling was justified as Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored on a breakaway with an assist from Nico Sturm and now it was 3-2 with a lot of game still left.

The gap on shots was closing between San Jose and Anaheim and so was the score. The chances the Sharks were getting were better, but they weren’t resulting in on goal shots which results in goals. With six minutes left in the third, the Sharks showed that they do well screening the net, but when no shots are actually close to the net, then it’s just bodies in the way.

The biggest penalty for the Sharks came in this last period by Vlasic (4 minute minor) with two minutes and 20 seconds left, so San Jose was on a penalty kill to end the game. Anaheim gets a penalty with a minute left making it a 4 on 4 as the Sharks approach the close of the game and San Jose also pulled Blackwood to make it a 5 on 4 in the last minute. After missing two shots, the Ducks recover the puck in open ice with an empty net and score one last goal. 4-2 Ducks.

The game comes to an end, both clubs will see each other Wednesday night in Anaheim for another preseason game. Face off 7:00pm PT at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Oakland Roots lose 1-0 to FC Tulsa to start home stand

Oakland Roots pose for a pre game team photo before their match against FC Tulsa on Sat Sep 16, 2023 (@oaklandrootssc photo)

Hayward, CA – The Oakland Roots face off against FC Tulsa to start a three game homestand with six games left in the season, four out of those six will be home games for Oakland. The Roots find themselves in 7th place of the West, three points clear of the playoff line.

Tulsa got on the board first 10 minutes into the game when Phillip Goodrum knocked a header in the net after receiving a short cross pass into the box and this header made it past Blanchette to put Tulsa up 1-0. The game plan for Oakland seemed more scattered than usual and Tulsa’s whole system was to take advantage of this scattered style of play.

The course of the first half was predominantly focused on setting up possible opportunities, but Oakland made the biggest mistake of the half right before stoppage time when Lindo Mfeka delivered a hard tackle that wasn’t just a clear foul, but resulted in a red card and the Roots had to play with ten men for the remainder of the game.

With only two minutes of stoppage time, the halftime whistle blew before anything could develop and Tulsa held the lead at 1-0, but with that red card on Oakland, Tulsa had the advantage.

The second half was a complete battle of possession, but the odds were evened out when Tulsa got a red card and now both teams were playing with ten guys. From there the rest of the second half played out and Tulsa never conceded.

As the final whistle blew, the game was just like how it started, 1-0 Tulsa and three points secured for Tulsa, which isn’t good for Oakland as they go into these final five games with a huge mountain to climb. The next game will be a home match for Oakland and it will be against Monterey Bay FC and the Roots need a win to secure them in the playoff picture.

Late Game Heroics LaMonte Wade Jr. Strikes Again; Giants Beat Rockies In Extras 6-5

San Francisco Giants’ Patrick Bailey, bottom, scores the winning run against Cleveland Guardians catcher Bo Naylor during the tenth inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wed Sep 13, 2023 (AP News photo)

Wednesday, September 13th, 2023

By Troy Ewers

San Francisco, CA – The series finale to this three game series with the San Francisco Giants (75-71) and Cleveland Guardians (69-78) comes in the form of a 66 degree day game in Oracle Park overlooking a beautiful McCovey Cove.

On the mound today starters, Kyle Harrison for the Giants and Logan Allen for the Guardians. The Giants win after a review that showed runner Patrick Bailey was ruled safe scoring on a sacrifice fly. Bailey scoring from third base that was hit by LaMonte Wade Jr. in the 6-5 win in ten innings.

The game Tuesday night snapped a four game winning streak by a 3-1 Cleveland victory and today’s game started exactly where last night’s game picked up. After a lead off Steve Kwan walk, Jose Ramirez would smack a 1-1 pitch to the left field bleachers for a two run home run and with no outs, Guardians 2-0.

The first inning rally for Cleveland wasn’t done yet as an error for Casey Schmitt off a hit by Gabriel Arias would lead to scoring both Josh Naylor and Andres Gimenez, 4-0 Guardians.

The Giants wouldn’t concede this early though as they jumped on Cleveland the same way Cleveland jumped on them. Luis Matos hits a single that scores Austin Slater and moves over Thairo Estrada. After Matos’s hit, Allen walked Patrick Bailey and loaded the bases, but that would be stopped and Guardians got out of the jam, but the score would be 4-1.

In the second inning the Guardians would add another one to their onslaught as Josh Naylor hit a single that scored Steven Kwan, making it 5-1 Cleveland.

The Giants took Kyle Harrison out in the fifth and he walked away with three strikeouts, seven hits, and five runs which he’d probably want to forget for his first career day game. From the third inning on it was a scoreless pitching duel, with the score still in favor of Cleveland, but San Francisco broke that stalemate in the seventh inning with a Wilmer Flores scored Thairo Estrada who got on with a double, 5-2.

The Giants were coming down to their final chances and to give themselves better chances, the Giants had Joc Pederson pinch hit and he was hit by pitch so the eighth inning started with Joc on base, but that was just the set up. Patrick Bailey followed him up with a single and moved Joc to third.

Then J.D. Davis erupted the crowd with a home run that Steven Kwan couldn’t snag in left field. This three run home run would’ve blown the roof off this place if it had a roof and just like that, the score was tied 5-5 with no outs. After a DeJong grounded out to second, Lamonte Wade Jr. who was the hero in Monday’s game, hit a single making him the potential go ahead runner on first base.

Estrada almost electrified Oracle Park with a deep fly ball to left, but that was the inning and we headed into the ninth inning with a tie game.

The Guardians scared the Giants fans with two hits on Tyler Rogers that put runners on second and third, but Camillo Doval came in and got the last out of the inning, now it was the orange and black’s turn in the ninth inning. Wilmer Flores started the inning at bat and singled to left.

Blake Sabol pinch ran for Flores and Mitch Haniger went to the box. Haniger would strike out, but Sabol would make it to second with a steal and Pederson next in the box. Joc would fly out to center and two outs Bailey was the one to possibly be the hero, but he would be struck out swinging and we have extra innings.

Cleveland’s go at the 10th inning was three up, three down from Doval and now the pressure was on the Giants. A lead off walk for Davis made it a runner on first and the extra innings runner in second and pinch hitting was Brandon Crawford and the crowd was on their feet.

Crawford would flash bunt majority of the at bat and got on base on balls and now the bases loaded with no outs and Wade Jr. at the plate. Lamonte hit the ball to left field and it was caught, but Bailey would tag third and go home, at first sight it looked like Bailey beat out the throw, but after further review Bailey was safe and the game was over 6-5 Giants!!!

The Giants walked away from this homestand 5-1 and won the series against Cleveland. The winning pitcher is Doval (6-4) and the losing pitcher is Xzavion Curry (3-4) who gave up the walk-off hit. No time to celebrate for SF as they play a brand new four game series against the Colorado Rockies in Colorado at Coors Field September 14th. It’s unknown who will start for the Giants in the first game of the series, but they know they will face Chase Anderson (0-5, 6.49) on the mound for the Rockies.
