Bay FC can’t find the Bat Signal against Gotham FC get clobbered 5-1 at Red Bull Arena

Bay FC’s push for the playoffs continued as they went on the road to take on Gotham FC at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. Gotham had only lost once so far this season at home, meaning Bay was going to have a difficult fight to walk away with three points. Difficult indeed as the Bay were defeated 5-1 by Gotham FC.

Bay FC Starting XI: Rowland, Malonson, Menges, Dahlkemper, Dydasco, Boade, Pickett, Bailey, Oshoala, Kundananji, Hill

Gotham Starting XI: Berger, Nighswonger, Sonnett, Williams, Stevens, Martin, Davidson, Lavelle, Sheehan, Ryan, Carter

In the 7th minute, Gotham appealed for a potential handball inside the box. As a result, the video assistant referee advised the official to review the play. Upon review, it was clear that the ball hit the extended arm of Asisat Oshoala and Gotham was awarded an early penalty.

Jenna Nighswonger stepped up to take the penalty, and scored after hitting the post as the ball bounced into the net. Katelyn Rowland went the wrong way, giving her no chance to make a save. After the goal, Bay FC was clearly frustrated causing them to play overly aggressively.

Gotham meanwhile was creating more chances offensively looking to extend their lead. Ann-Katrin Berger saw her first action of the night when Dorian Bailey attempted a chip pass to Rachael Kundananji, but the Gotham goalkeeper came out to play the ball.

Oshoala got the equalizer in the 18th minute when a perfectly timed through ball from Kundananji got her behind the defense, leaving her with only Berger to beat. Oshoala had now scored Bay’s last four goals, and had four in five games.

Gotham’s dangerous attack immediately started generating more offensive opportunities, but Bay FC was able to contain them for the most part. Bay had another strong scoring chance in the 32nd minute, but a bit of a broken play led to confusion resulting in Bailey not firing a shot on what would’ve likely been a clear goal.

Around that point in the match, Bay was bringing more offensive pressure than they had all night. Kundananji in particular was creating a lot of chances, but her runs weren’t being finished off by her teammates. In the 38th and 39th minutes, Gotham was trying to overload the box which led to chaos in front of Bay FC’s goal.

Although they weren’t able to score on the sequence, it definitely caused some scary moments for the defense. Ella Stevens and Oshoala collided in extra time, but after a short delay both would get back up with no issues.

Tess Boade immediately started the second half with an attack for Bay FC, but her centering pass didn’t find anyone in front of goal. The first 15 minutes of the half would feature quite a bit of end-to-end action, highlighted by Bailey nearly giving Bay a 2-1 lead when her shot went just over the crossbar.

Oshoala went down in some discomfort around the 60th minute. After getting some attention from the training staff, she remained in the game. Bailey had another chance from in close in the 67th minute, but once again got a little too much on the shot.

Stevens and Caprice Dydasco got tied up in the 68th minute, giving Bay FC a very dangerous free-kick opportunity. They were unable to convert, and Gotham gained possession launching an attack of their own. The ball would end up on the head of Rose Lavelle who gave the home team a 2-1 lead.

In the 72nd minute, Gotham would score another making it 3-1. This time, it was Esther Gonzalez who put it away. Esther got a second less than two minutes later, extending the lead to 4-1. It took less than five minutes for things to completely fall apart for Bay FC in a game that had otherwise been even.

It was very reminiscent of a few games from earlier in the season, and with a playoff push in full swing, these types of mistakes cannot happen. CeCe Kizer would add a fifth goal in the 84th minute. Kundananji left the game in the 88th minute and she was clearly upset and went directly to the locker room rather than remaining on the bench with her teammates. The game would ultimately end in a 5-1 defeat for Bay FC.

STANFORD, Calif. — A blazing 89 degrees was a contributing factor why the Stanford Cardinal (2-3, 1-2 ACC) realized hosting the inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference game at Stanford Stadium was Too Hot to handle, and lost to the Virginia Tech Hokies (3-3, 1-1 ACC), 31-7.

The visitors from the Old Dominion State won the coin toss, but graciously deferred the ball to the hosts. Unfortunately Stanford did not cherish the benevolent gift. They failed to convert any points on the scoreboard.

As the Cardinal took the snap on the first drive of the game, there was a chang under center. Backup junior QB Justin Lamson was the starter, as Ashton Daniels was out with an ankle injury, reportedly from the game last week at Clemson.

Lamson was sacked on a crucial 3rd down play, around the 10 minute mark, resulting in a field goal attempt To the team’s dismay, senior kicker Emmet Kenney missed a 53-yarder.. Despite good intentions during the initial possession, the Cardinal ended up with a “Goose Egg, 0-0.

The Hokies on the other hand, were determined to reach paydirt. More than midway though the first quarter, redshirt-junior QB, Kyron Drones hit graduate WR Stephen Gosnell for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Virginia Tech scored first and put seven points on the board and led 7-0 late in the quarter, However, Stanford still had time to deliver the equalizer.

Lamson tried a QB keeper with :12 left in the first 15; he was hit at the goal line with the opportunity to tie the game, consequently fumbling and turning the ball over to theards into the end zone, doubling their score. Two scoring opportunities thwarted for various reasons. After one quarter of play, 7-0 Virginia Tech.

In the second stanza, the Hokies went on a nearly 7-minute drive, culminating in another score just under the 2-minute timeout before halftime. Senior running back Bhayshal Tuten scampered seven yards into the end zone, doubling their score midway through the game, 14-0. That was their third halftime shutout of the year.

The third quarter provided the Hokies the opportunity to triple their original score in only four plays and just under two minutes. Drones launched a 55-yard TD pass to graduate WR Da’Quan Felton, to give VA Tech a commanding 21-0 lead with almost 3/4 of the contest being over. However, the Cardinal had something to say and do before quarter’s end.

On a trick play, freshman running back Micah Ford tossed a 19-yard TD to redshirt sophomore WR Elic Ayomanor, with a minute remaining in the third quadrant, 21-7 VA Tech. That was all the scoring for the Cardinal, as the Hokies tagged on 10 more points in the final quarter.

Lawson threw an interception early in the quarter, in which the Hokies capitalized on the turnover. A few minutes later, Drones scores on a QB keeper for a 2-yard TD. The Hokies were up 28-7 and capped off the blistering afternoon five minutes later with a 46-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore kicker Josh Love. After 60 minutes of scorching heat, the Virginia Tech Hokies won the conference game, 31-7.

Stanford will next be in action Saturday October 12 in South Bend, IN to take on Notre Dame at 12:30 PM EST. on NBC. Virginia Tech goes back to Blacksburg Thursday October 17, to host Boston College at 4:30 PM EST on ESPN.

When I first arrived in the United States as a young teen in 1961, I remember people saying, “In America, everybody deserves a second chance.” Well, Pete Rose, as a player, never got that chance by the MLB Hall of Fame.

Charlie Hustle was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling on the Cincinnati Reds team he managed; that makes a lot of sense. As a manager, he made the moves; some of them could win a game, and some could not, but he had absolute control throughout any match. Common sense tells us that for baseball, it was correct to ban him for life as a manager. But as a player?

In the United States of America, even criminals, big-time felons, go to prison, serve their time, rehabilitate later, and join society again. Example: O.J Simpson, and we know that story.

As a player, Pete Rose is the all-time Hits King, with 4,256 hits. #2 in Ty Cobb, 4189 hits; if we used today’s standards, Ty Cobb should lead a new Hall of Fame, “The Racist Hall of Fame, and ‘trust me’ he will have competition, even managers.

Today, the Hall of Fame’s various committees elect participants other than recently retired players. The most active is the Veterans Committee. I hope that for the sake of the great game of baseball and future generations, Pete Rose could be elected to the Hall of Fame as a player. Why?

Because he was one of the best baseball players ever to wear a uniform. Whether or not you like his personality, you do not elect people for their personality flaws but for the merit of their performance. With 4,256 hits, who could argue with a career of such magnitude, especially during this time in baseball history when the average batting average in baseball is a paltry .240. I covered Pete Rose as a player, and he should be in the Hall of Fame. Period.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa: Askarov might be on shelf until regular season gets underway

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 How surprising is that the San Jose Sharks have demoted their goaltender Yaroslav Askarov and was assigned to the AHL affiliate San Jose Barracuda.

#2 On Friday Askarov skated with the Barracuda during the Friday morning skate but did not travel to Bakersfield for the Barracuda’s first pre season game.

#3 The Barracuda have one more pre season game on Sun Oct 3 against Bakersfield before they open the regular season on Sat Oct 12th in Ontario. It’s quite possible without risking injury to Askarov he could see action once the regular season gets started.

#4 Askarov who was with the Nashville Predators last season asked for a trade after goaltender Jusse Saros was given an eight year extension and Scott Wedgewood would be the back up goalie which would most likely equate to Askarov having more bench time.

#5 There has to be very little doubt that Askarov looks at being in the San Jose organization as a second opportunity to get a chance to see more time and work his way up back to the Sharks.

#1 It had to be special for the New Jersey Devils who faced off with Buffalo Sabres in Prague. New Jersey goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots in the 4-1 win Friday night at the 2024 NHL Global Series Czechia presented by Fastenal. The game drew 16, 913 so the NHL is a hot commodity in Prague as well.

#2 Clayton Keller was named the first captain in Utah Hockey history Oliver Eckman Larsson was the Arizona Coyotes beginning Sep 13, 2018 and later was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on July 23, 2021. Keller was the alternate captain on the Coyotes for the last two seasons, he also led by example leading the Yotes in goals with 33 goals, assists with 43, and 76 points.

#3 While Edmonton Oilers Kris Knoblauch is still trying to decide whose going to work the blue lines with just six days left until the regular season starts. But there is no doubt that the Oilers will be starting Stuart Skinner in goal for this season. Stuart started in 57 games last season. Knoblauch said of Stuart, “You look at how well he’s handled adversity throughout the year. After a bad game, he’s always responded.

#4 Len, Austin Matthews comes into this season as the 26th named captain in Toronto Maple Leafs history. Matthews succeeds last season’s captain John Tavares. Tavares had been team captain for the Leafs since October 2019. Tavares will continue to bring a veteran presence. One of the big reasons for Matthews becoming the captain was given by team president Brenden Shanahan, “Over these past eight seasons, we’ve witnessed first-hand Auston’s trajectory and evolution as a player and a person,”

#5 The San Jose Sharks and NHL’s number one draft pick Macklin Celebrini is still nursing a nagging lower body injury. Celebrini was able to skate for the first time on Friday since his injury during Tuesday’s pre season game against Utah. Sharks head coach Ryan Warosfsky said “He skated on his own today, so I think we’re trending in the right direction. But again, it’s still very early in the process, and we’ll see how he is tomorrow and evaluate.”

San Jose Adds Another Loss in Dramatic Fashion

SAN JOSE, CA –– Time flies by, and so does the NHL Pre-season.

Back in action for the final time, at least for pre-season at home, the Sharks host for the third time during these warm-up games to the Anaheim Ducks. The Sharks last played against Anaheim a week ago where the local team managed to take the win home with a 3-2 score in Overtime.

Things have not gone well since that Friday night for the Sharks. The Teal added another loss against Utah and lost something more than just a game, Mac. Celebrini was injured in the second period, and the young star did not return to the game. The good news is that. The injury is nothing serious and is clear to play.

This time, The Sharks played well but simply couldn’t maintain the pressure that playing in life-or-death situations requires. The team showed good chemistry and fighting, but in. these instances, the team that plays better wins

Throughout the first period, both teams were fairly evenly matched, dominating strategy and playmaking more than execution, so the first period passed without much news with a score of zero to zero.

The Sharks came out onto the ice with a different DNA, showing a more aggressive game, especially on the offensive side, recovering pucks and closing down opportunities for Anaheim to score goals.

All of this paid off, and at minute 19:07, with an assist from W. Smith and J. Walman on a deflected slap shot, Klim Kostin scored the first goal for the home team.

San Jose maintained the lead for a long time until minute 12:06, when Anaheim’s Frank Vatrano tied the game for Anaheim.

The second period was plagued by penalties, power-plays, and a close game.

Everything seemed to be setting up a good third period, Anaheim managed to counterattack, starting with a play by L. Carlsson, A. Killorn, and a goal by Cutter Gauthier. During the third period, Anaheim maintained the lead for the rest of the game, and San Jose seemed to add another loss in regulation time.

San Jose’s Henry Thrun took charge of tying the score at 3-3 with a powerful slap shot assisted by W. Eklund.

The game went to overtime, and there was not much new, but the latest thing about the game was that the game went to a penalty shootout for the first time this season.

The first to score in the shootout was Anaheim star Trevor Zegras, who failed to get the puck into the net, and then Will Smith for San Jose, who also failed to score.

That’s how the second shootout went, neither team scored. San Jose’s D. Gushchin had a good performance tonight but couldn’t give any hope in the shootout.

The game was decided on the last goal as Anaheim’s Cutter Gauthier scored again for Anaheim and gave itself the lead and the chance to win.

San Jose’s F. Zetterlund failed to score, and thus, the Sharks added another loss in the pre-season.

San Jose will travel to Las Vegas to finish its pre-season commitments against the Vegas Golden Knights and thus begin the long-awaited opening night next October 10 against the Blues.

San Jose will once again host the Ducks on Hispanic Heritage Night on October 12 at home.

Aces Beat Liberty For First Time This Season 95-81; Vegas cuts New York’s lead to one; Aces can tie series Sunday

With grit and determination, the Las Vegas Aces (1-2) beat the New York Liberty (2-1) for the first time this year. This game was a win big or go home for Las Vegas trailing 0-2 and the Aces starters could not have picked a better time to turn things around.

Playing at home was a plus but it was the defense, the lack of turnovers and some brilliant offense that won this game. The first half was back and forth with 18 lead changes but the second half was a different story with the Aces totally dominating winning the game 95-81.

All four of the Vegas starters had double digits and A’ja Wilson had another double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Aces were protecting the ball well Friday night with only six turnovers through three quarters.

Game recap: It was a wild first half of basketball with 18 lead changes the most in WNBA playoff history. The Aces led after the first ten minutes of play 26-23 in a close contest. Another back and forth quarter ensued with the both teams scoring 26 points in the second.

Las Vegas led at halftime 52-49 with the promise of two more crazy quarters before this game was all said and done. The Aces had contained Sabrina Ionescu who had not scored at all in the first half. The Liberty’s Jonquel Jones was in a bit of trouble with three fouls.

Mid-way through the third quarter, New York was forced to call a time-out when Las Vegas led 61-53. The Liberty missed 12 shots in a row in the quarter and Jones had her fourth foul. Las Vegas really got going in the quarter leading 66-53 with 2:51 left in the third quarter.

The Liberty were committing some uncharacteristic fouls and turnovers. The Aces had a 13-0 run going with 1:31 left in the quarter leading 73-53 and Las Vegas had taking control of the third.

They outscored the Liberty 21-6 in the quarter and New York had gone eight minutes without scoring. The Aces took a 73-55 lead into the fourth quarter. Ionescu had still not scored and with Jones in danger of fouling out, New York had a lot of work to do and it seemed unlikely that Las Vegas was slowing down in any way.

The Aces did not back off leading by 25 points at one point in the final quarter. The final was 95-81 Aces. With under three minutes left in the game the starters took the bench. Jackie Young had the team high with 24 points.

Kelsey Plum was on point with 20 points and A’ja Wilson finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds. The Las Vegas defense was lights out and kept the Liberty out of the paint. The Aces totally contained Sabrina Ionescu allowing only four points from the talented guard.

Game notes: Friday night, the Aces faced a win or go home situation as they beat the Liberty in game three and are now 1-2 with the win. It is a major long shot but if any team in the league is capable of not only winning Friday night but taking the series it is the Las Vegas Aces.

With unanimous MVP of the season A’Ja Wilson on board and a great supporting cast in Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young plus Tiffany Hayes off the bench who just won the WNBA 6th person of the year award this team will fight to the end.

It’s a lot of pressure and every one of these players brought their A game in this all-important daunting task. They got some solid defense and it all started with Jackie Young who is one of the strongest guards in the league.

Plum, Young and Gray are a great combo providing defense that were all clicking in game 3. The unfortunate truth is that all three were not clicking in games one and two. Of the three, Gray has struggled and has been strangely sloppy.

The Liberty have clogged the paint a favorite location of A’ja Wilson and the missed layups in games one and two had head coach Becky Hammon enraged on the sidelines. The bottom line is that Las Vegas met the Liberty five times this season and they lost all five games this was different on Friday they beat New York for the first time all season.

Sunday afternoon, the Aces will be looking for a win in game four and tying up this series. Sunday’s matchups gets underway at 2:30 ET. The Las Vegas Aces are not done yet.

#1 The Sacramento Kings have exercised the four year option Keegan Murray’s contract. Murray was a key offensive component for the Kings last season averaging 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 77 games.

#2 Murray spoke with the media and is noted for being a quiet type and said he’s just being himself. No doubt his playing does the talking.

#3 Murray says he gets a lot of passes and that his teammates realize he’s on a roll with his ability to score.

#4 Mason Jones who played last season in Europe now with the Kings for this season said it was something that he needed to experience. Jones said it was something God was showing him that one year can change his life.

#5 The Kings open the pre season Wed Oct 9 against the Golden State Warriors. It’s time as a team the Kings look forward to getting the pre season started.

#1 For Cal ESPN is hosting a Game Day visit which features lots of celebrities for a first time ever appearance at UC Berkeley coming this Saturday. This no doubt has to be exciting for Cal and alumnus.

#1 The Miami Hurricanes the Cal Bears next opponent. The Hurricanes are living up to their namesake and blowing away the competition at 5-0 in their last game they played a tight game with the Virginia Tech Hokies 38-34 but have been dominant against their opponents this season.

#2 Hurricanes quarterback Cameron Ward is throwing the football with much accuracy in his last game against the Virginia Tech Hokies went 24-38 for 348 yards with 4 touchdowns and was picked off two times.

#3 Cal dropped to 3-1 taking their first loss of the season against a struggling Florida Seminoles who picked up their first win. Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 22-36 for 303 yards but didn’t throw for any touchdowns. Do you see him getting those kinds of yards once again but completing passes for scores will that be a question for this week as well?

#4 Miami has a very good pass rush against Virginia Tech but the Hokies also countered with putting pressure on the quarterback as well. Do you seeing Cal focusing on protecting the quarterback from the Hurricanes pass rush this Saturday.

#5 Morris, just wanted to get your prediction on this upcoming game as Miami comes calling this Saturday at Cal Memorial in Berkeley in ACC action between the Miami Hurricanes and the Cal Bears with that 7:30pm PT?

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (2-2) will play their fifth game of the season against the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3). Stanford in it’s last two games won it’s first game against Syracuse 26-24 and dropped it’s second game against at Clemson by a huge score 40-14.

#2 Clemson right of the gate established themselves taking a 10-0 in the first quarter and you had to ask yourself how concerned was Stanford head coach Troy Taylor at that juncture.

#3 Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik was dominant throwing four touchdowns and the Stanford defense struggled to get some footing to try and even stopo Klubnik.

#4 The Tigers were in double digits in the first, second, and fourth quarters, Klubnik had all day and you had to be watching anyone on the line for Stanford trying get past the Clemson offensive line to even get a glove on Klubnik but Clemson whose playing excellent football right now is getting Klubnik all the time he needs.
