Verlander gets lit up in second inning still looking for first win; Blue Jays Bassitt was dealing shutout Giants 4-0

The San Francisco Giants (52-46) just could not get going despite 11 hits in game one of their series with the Toronto Blue Jays (56-41) losing 4-0 Friday night at Rogers Centre. The Giants consistently left runners stranded and Justin Verlander only lasted 2 2/3 innings giving up nine hits and four runs. It was not the way they wanted to get started after the All-Star Break. They will be back at it Saturday in game two looking to even the series.

Game recap: The Blue Jays got to work early taking a 4-0 lead in the second inning. San Francisco had opportunity to do some damage with six hits in the game but Toronto with nine hits was the team cashing in.

Joey Loperfido doubled to get the game going in the second and Addison Barger scored for a 1-0 lead. Will Wagner came to the plate and he also doubled driving in base runners Alejandro Kirk and Loperfido home for a 3-0 lead.

Nathan Lukes finished off the inning with a single and Wagner scored for a 4-0 lead. It was a brief showing for San Francisco starting pitcher Verlander who did not go very far into the game. He was relieved after 2 2/3 innings allowing nine hits, four runs, two walks with zero strikeouts. He was relieved by Tristan Beck.

San Francisco got a single out of Patrick Bailey in the fifth inning but that would be all they could manage. Dominic Smith flied out and both Mike Yastrzemski and Heliot Ramos struck out to end the top of the inning.

The game went into the sixth inning with the Blue Jays still holding onto the 4-0 lead. This was an important inning for the Giants to get something going. First at bat for the Giants was Rafael Devers who doubled deep into center field.

Matt Chapman grounded out and Devers advanced to third. With Jung Hoo Lee at the plate and two outs, San Francisco needed to bring Devers home. Lee grounded out and despite eight hits in the game the Giants still had not gotten up on the scoreboard.

San Francisco got a rally going in the sevent inning with Smith and Bailey both singling with one out and that was it for Toronto pitcher Chris Bassitt. He was relieved by lefty Brendon Little. Neither team was able to score in the seventh or eighth inning and the Blue Jays took the 4-0 lead into the ninth inning. San Francisco was down to their last three outs in the ninth.

Casey Schmitt struck out, Dominic Smith struck out and Bailey made it a threesome also striking out and that was the ball game 4-0 in favor of Toronto.

Game notes: The Giants have had a a four-day stretch during the All-Star break to rest and reset going into their series with the Jays. They now look forward to the remainder of the 2025 season as they battle to climb up in the standings of the National League West.

They are currently in third place one and a half games behind the second place San Diego Padres. The Blue Jays continue to hang onto first place in the American League East three games ahead of the New York Yankees in a loaded division.

Verlander got shelled early in the game and dropped his season record to a 0-8 win/loss record looking at another loss and still searching for that first win of the season. Bassett had an outing for the Jays in the starting role pitching 6.1 innings allowing ten hits but no runs and striking out five hitters.

San Francisco had numerous scoring opportunities but came up empty despite 11 hits in the game. Verlander got the game going in the wrong direction and it was all downhill from there.

Saturday at Roger Centre the Giants will be looking to even up the series in game two. First pitch is scheduled for 12:07 PM PT. The Giants will start RHP Logan Webb (9-6, 2.94 ERA). The Blue Jays probable pitcher will be Eric Lauer with a 4-2 win/loss record and a 2.78 ERA. The break that the Giants got over this week did not seem to help and they will hopefully have an improved effort in Saturday’s game.

#5 The San Francisco Giants return to action today, opening a series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Justin Verlander takes the mound for San Francisco, still looking for his first win of the season despite a 0-7 record and a 4.70 ERA. He’ll face Toronto’s Chris Bassitt, who is 9-4 with a 4.12 ERA. This is the first match between the two clubs this season, with the first pitch set for 4:07 PM.

#1 Michael, the A’s Brent Rooker had himself an All Star week we’ll start with the home run derby last Monday where Rooker tied with the Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh only to lose to Raleigh on a “Measure off” Raleigh’s last home run defeated Rooker by one inch to win the derby.

#2 Rooker also got a left center field three run home run off of San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Randy Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh inning.

#3 Further there was talk this week that the Giants could be interested in obtaining Rooker before this month’s trade deadline. Rooker is signed with the A’s through the 2029 season on a five year deal worth $60 million which includes a $22 million option for 2030.

#4 The A’s Jacob Wilson scored a run, had one hit for two RBIs so the A’s Rooker and Wilson showed up for this All Star Game and represented the A’s well.

#5 The A’s open the second half of the 2025 season this Friday in Cleveland for a three game set. Starting pitcher for the A’s LHP JP Sears (7-7 ERA 4.79) for the Guardians RHP Slade Cecconi (4-4 ERA 3.44) first pitch at 4:10pm PT at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Former Giants General Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer Bill Neukom passed away today at the age of 83

Bill Neukom first purchased a stake in the Giants in 1995, and then took over as Managing Partner and CEO for Peter Magowan following the 2008 season. Neukom was at the helm of the Giants’ organization for just three seasons, but they were far from uneventful for such a short stint.

Neukom took over after the Giants had suffered through four-consecutive losing seasons, and made a point to invest in the players and the team on the field. In Newukom’s first season as CEO in 2009, the Giants contended and had their first winning season in five years going 88-74, and missing the playoffs by just four games.

Of course in 2010, the Giants won their first world championship since moving out west to San Francisco in 1958. It was the franchise’s first title since 1954, which ended what was the third-longest championship drought in baseball at the time.

Unfortunately, as glorious as the magic of 2010 was, 2011 was the exact opposite for Neukom. The Giants had their third straight winning season, as they went 86-76, but they were marred by injuries, which caused them to miss the playoffs.

Throughout the 2011 season, tensions arose between Neukom and other owners about how to spend the championship revenue money. Neukom wanted to invest it in technology for the players, while other owners wanted to put it towards a rainy day fund.

On Sept. 14, 2011, it was announced that Neukom would step down from the team following the end of the season with Larry Baer taking his place as CEO. The Giants would win two more titles in 2012 and 2014 under Baer’s watch, but Neukom certainly planted the seeds for the Giants’ success from their entire run from 2009 to 2016.

Prior to becoming CEO of the Giants, Neukom enjoyed a long run with Microsoft, eventually becoming their Executive Vice President. In fact, Neukom started with Microsoft at the very beginning when they had just 12 employees.

Neukom was also a lawyer, and was even the President of the American Bar Association from August 2007 to August 2008. He also co-founded the World Justice Project in 2006, which works to advance the rule of law throughout the world.

#1 Morris, just wanted to get your prospective if you can see the Sacramento A’s Brent Rooker as someone who the San Francisco Giants might want to covet. Rooker came close to winning the Home Run Derby at the All Star Game literally coming within an inch of winning the derby but falling that short to the Philadelphia Phillies Kyle Schwarber. No doubt Rooker will be sought at the trade deadline.

#2 The Giants Logan Webb representing the Giants pitched for one inning gave up one hit and Randy Rodriguez pitched two thirds of inning giving up one hit, one earned run, and one walk. Two good outings for San Francisco at the All Star Game.

#3 It’s the first time the Giants have had three All Stars since 2021. The Giants have been getting great pitching from this season’s All Stars Robbie Ray, Rodriguez and Webb.

#4 Robbie Ray didn’t pitch for the Giants because he pitched on Sunday. Ray started out with strong beginning at 8-1. Ray right now is 9-3 and has been throwing heat.

#5 The Giants return to second half action as they open up a three game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Friday night. Starting pitcher for the Giants RHP Justin Verlander (0-7 ERA 4.70). The Jays will start RHP Chris Bassett (9-4 ERA 4.12).

#1 MLB ok’d the possibility for the Tampa Bay Rays to play at their temporary home park George M Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Bay if the Rays were to get into the post season. The park seats 10,000 fans and is sure to be sold out if the Rays make the post season. The other alternate was to have the Rays play at LoanDepot Park in Miami at big league park but the Rays and MLB will have the Rays play at the Minor League park.

#2 MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and the Players Association union head Tony Clark are exploring the idea of having MLB players in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. If agreed upon by both side and the Olympic Committee the game would be an extension of the All Star break. Manfred said it would be a great opportunity for baseball to be on the global stage.

#3 Jessica all the talk in baseball is surrounding the 2025 All Star Game in Atlanta where the National League’s Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies hit three home runs in the newly formatted Swing Off instead of playing extra innings it’s a home run derby to decide the winner of the All Star game.

#4 MLB and the All Star Game paid tribute to the late home run king Henry Aaron show a play by play video on the Truist Field baseball diamond of Aaron at the plate needing one more home to break Babe Ruth’s home run record. Aaron on a 1-0 count facing the Los Angles Dodgers Al Downing slugged a pitch that went into the Atlanta Braves bullpen at Fulton County Stadium April 8, 1974. It was a celebration that included pyrotechnics effects it lasted one minute and left you wanting more.

#5 Jessica, all the controversy surrounding Milwaukee Brewers sensation Jacob Misiorowski (4-1) with complaints that he pitched only five games and he gets an All Star selection and there were Philadelphia Phillies pitchers who pitched much more and had more wins. It was pointed out that by Phillies players that pitchers Ranger Suarez and Chris Sanchez were left out in favor of Misiorowski. Phillies Trea Turner said the idea was “terrible”, Nick Castellanos said the All Star Game is turning into the “Savannah Bananas”, and catcher JT Realmuto said “Nothing against the Misiorowski kid. But [Suarez and Sanchez] are deserving of being on the team in the first place. There’s no doubt.”

Atlanta Welcomes This Year’s All-Star Game; National League Wins In First Ever Home-Run Swing-Off 4-3

After nine innings, the All-Star Game was tied at 6-6. For the first time ever the winner was decided by a Home-Run Swing-Off. The hero of this game’s finish was Kyle Schwarber who hit three home runs to win the game for the National League.

All Star recap: Tuesday night the All-Star Game got underway, the 95th annual event being held at Truist Park home stadium of the Atlanta Braves in Cobb County. Starting the game for the National League for the second year in a row will be Pittsburgh Pirate Paul Skenes.

Taking the mound for the American League Cy Young winner Detroit Tiger Tarik Skubal got the honors. The two clubs will be managed by the Los Angeles Dodgers Dave Roberts (National League ) and the New York Yankees Aaron Boone (American League), the two skippers for the teams that reached the 2024 World Series. So the best of the best in the world of baseball took the field and this game got underway.

Second baseman from Detroit Gleyber Torres took the plate getting this game underway. Skenes breezed through the inning three up and three down. Torres and Riley Greener both struck out and Yankee great Aaron Judge grounded out.

The National League took the early lead in the bottom of the inning 2-0. Arizona’s Ketel Marte doubled the Braves Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dodgers Shohei Ohtani home. It was a great start for the National League with three hits to open this game.

Although all of these guys by nature are highly competitive, smiles abounded on both sides These guys were having the time of their lives as were the fans lucky enough to be able to attend the game. The Dodgers Freddie Freeman hit fourth in the inning drawing cheers from the fans after having played his first 12 seasons in Atlanta. He still remains a fan favorite here at Truist Park.

The Dodgers Clayton Kershaw took the mound to start the second inning all mic’d up which was a real treat for viewers. ( a bevy of players were mic’d in the game) the Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh lined out and Kershaw struck out Toronto Blue Jays Vladimir Guerrero before heading back to the dugout. The Padres Jason Adam closed out the inning with a Orioles Ryan O’Hearn strikeout.

San Francisco’s Logan Webb pitched the top of the third inning closing it out with a couple of ground outs, and a fly out giving up a single. The Mariners Bryan Woo pitched a three up, three down bottom of the third and the National League took the 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.

The National League extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. got the inning going with a walk, the Cardinals Brendan Donovan singled and the Mets Pete Alonso had a huge hit, a home run to right and three more runs for the National League. They would tack one more on off a the Diamondbacks Corbin Carroll shot a solo home run and going into the top of the seventh inning they had a 6-0 lead.

As the sixth inning came to an end the game was halted for a beautiful tribute to the Braves Hank Aaron and his legacy of excellence. The 25-time all-star who broke through unbelievable barriers, hatred and racism, was honored on the field in a memorable and unforgettable moment.

As the seventh inning got underway, this game would get very interesting when the American League finally got up on the board. The Athletics Brent Rooker hit a home run and base runners the Blue Jays Alejandro KIrk and the Rays Jonathan Aranda scored and the National League’s lead had been cut in half 6-3. They would score another run when the Royals Maikel Garcia scored on a Royals Bobby Witt Jr. ground out and we had a new ball game 6-4.

This game went into the top of the ninth inning with the National League hanging onto the 6-4 lead. The American League started a rally with a runner on second base with one out. The Twins Byron Buxton scored on a Witt Jr. double and the American league only trailed by a single run with only one out 6-5.

With two outs, the Guardians Steven Kwan was looking at a 1-2 count down to their last strike. He hit an infield single and this game was tied 6-6 when Witt Jr. scored. The game went into the bottom of the ninth inning and the National League was looking for the walk off. It did not happen and we all got to witness history.

History was made with the first home run swing off ever. Three players from each team would get three swings apiece. The two teams would alternate and the team with the most HR’s would win the All-Star Game.

The American League chose Rooker, the Rays Randy Arozarena and Aranda, For the National League Miami Marlins Kyle Stowers, the Phillies Kyle Schwarber , and Alonso took the plate.

After the first round, the American League led 2-1 when Rooker hit a couple out of the park. Arozarena added a third home run. for a 3-1 lead. Schwarber hit all three out of the park and the National League led 4-3.

Aranda missed all three pitches and the game was decided. It was history in the making and it was the National League who made that history with win 4-3 in a wild finish. MVP of the game was as expected Schwarber.

This game had everything that goes into an exciting All-Star Game with a little extra thrown in making it one of the most exciting and unique games ever, one to remember, one that will go down in history.

All Star notes: Monday night the All-Star Game got underway with the highly anticipated Home Run Derby. The favored Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh came within an inch of not moving on from the first round to win the whole shebang.

After the first round Raleigh was tied with the Sacramento Athletics Brent Rooker, each of them hitting 17 homers. Raleigh moved on in thanks to his longest hit of the round which surpassed Rooker’s by roughly an inch. Raleigh’s blast traveled 470.62 feet while Rooker’s came up just short at 470.54 feet knocking Rooker out of the derby. So the Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh took the tiebreaker and moved on to win the derby.

#1 Tampa Bay Rays owner Stu Sternberg has reached an agreement with Florida developer Patrick Zalupski in principle on a deal to sell the Rays for $1.7 billion. The deal keeps the Rays in Tampa Bay and is expected to close in September. Zalupski is a homebuilder in Jacksonville and was a buyer who strongly believes in keeping the team in Tampa Bay.

#2 Amaury, Sternberg bought the Rays in 2004 for $200 million. After last year’s Hurricane Milton tore the roof off of Tropicana Field the Rays were forced to play their home games at the New York Yankees spring training facility at George M Steinbrenner Field. Zalupski plans to build a new ballpark and keep the club in Tampa Bay.

#3 Sternburg basically could not go forward with owning the team. Before the Hurricane Sternburg planned to build a new stadium at the Historic Gas Plant District and was planning to design a recreational retail and residential area in St Petersburg replacing the old Tropicana. That was all shot down after Sternburg realized the excess costs in repairing the Trop and later tearing it down to build the new park.

#4 Meanwhile the Sacramento A’s development for their new ballpark is still in question as A’s owner John Fisher is looking for someone to buy the MLS San Jose Earthquakes for $600 million to cover part of the costs of his construction costs. K Pop star Suga and former MLB pitcher Chan Ho Park are putting together $70 million as an investment into the A’s. Yet in still that may not be enough to cover the balance of the construction costs for the Las Vegas ballpark.

#5 If Fisher can not meet the costs of building the Las Vegas park and he stated that the park costs could go up from $1.75 billion to $2 billion if that proves too much could you see the other MLB owners putting the pressure on Fisher to sell much like they did with Sternburg?
