Isiah Kiner-Falefa gets walk off hit for Bucs as Giants Lose to Pirates 5-4 in the ninth

It was looking pretty good for the San Francisco Giants (56-57) going into the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game of their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates (49-64). Despite it being a one-run game, San Francisco brought in their most successful closer Randy Rodriguez.

It was a surprising inning from Rodriguez who walked the first batter followed by hitting the next batter Jack Suwinski. Joey Bart tied up the game 4-4 with a single.

With only one out, Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded into a fielder’s choice Suwinski scored from third and that was the ball game with the Pirates coming from behind and winning 5-4. The Giants again fall under five hundred for the third time this season and the Pirates won the first game of the series after sweeping San Francisco at Oracle last week.

San Francisco scored two runs in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. Dominic Smith singled Willie Adames home and Casey Schmitt walked with the bases loaded bringing Francisco Devers home for the second run.

It was a horrible start for Pirates pitcher Oviedo who allowed two singles and three walks. He loaded the bases to start the inning giving up a single for the the first run and with the bases remaining loaded walked Casey Schmitt home for the second run of the inning.

The Pirates got up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a single run. Spencer Horwitz scored from second base . He reached second base on a fielding error from Heliot Ramos and scored on a Nick Gonzales sacrifice. They had cut the Giants lead in half.

Neither team was able to score in the second, third or fourth innings and going into the fifth inning the Giants were hanging onto a 2-1 lead. San Francisco had a few singles in the third inning but neither team had runners in scoring position for the next three innings.

Justin Verlander finished the game going five innings only allowing three hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. He was relieved by Carson Seymour in the sixth inning. Seymour pitched into the seventh inning.

Jung Hoo Lee had a monster hit in the fifth inning, a triple that brought both Willie Adames and Matt Chapman home taking a 4-1 lead.

When it looked like the Giants would take the 4-1 lead into the eighth inning the Pirates Jack Suwinski hit a two run home run and it was a one-run game, the Giants leading 4-3. Giants pitcher Carson Seymour unfortunately walked the first at bat that he faced to start the bottom of the seventh giving up the two runs.

Spencer Bivens took over on the mount in the bottom of the eighth inning looking to protect the Giants one run lead after San Francisco went three and out to start the inning. Bivens gave up a single and with two outs Randy Rodriguez came in to try and get the final four outs. The Giants were able to tag Nick Gonzales out at second for the third out and the Giants were three outs away from winning the first game of the series.

The top of the ninth inning got underway with the Giants looking for at least one insurance run. Pittsburgh pitcher Dauri Moreta carved up the Giants with a fly out, a strikeout and a lineout. It would be up to Randy Rodriguez to save the game for San Francisco.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Rodriguez had walked Andrew McCutchen and went on to hit Jack Suwinski putting two runners on base. After going hitless for the entire game Joey Bart got a hit to center field allowing McCutchen to score from second base tying up the game 4-4.

In a most disappointing finish to this game Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded into a fielder’s choice and Suwinski scored for the 5-4 walk-off. It was an especially tough loss for Giants closer Randy Rodriguez who had been dominant this season.

Game notes: After taking a series off the New York Mets over the weekend, the Giants took on the Pirates ( at PNC Park. The Giants had a blowout win over the Mets yesterday winning the game 12-6. In late July, the Pirates swept the Giants at Oracle and Monday night the Pirates continued on that path taking the first game of the series at PNC.

After winning the series over a very good Mets team the Giants looked to have turned a corner going forward and are hoping to finish strong in the next two months. Monday night Justin Verlander was looking for his second win of the season but didn’t get the decision as the Giants lost it after Verlander had left.

After a rough start in this three game series the Giants will be looking to even up the series in game two. Logan Webb will take the mound in Tuesday’s game. He comes into the game with a 9-8 win/loss record and a 3.31 ERA. The Pirates plan on starting Mike Burrows who has a 1-3 win/loss record and a 3.88 ERA. First pitch for this game is scheduled 3:40 PM.

Sacramento A’s podcast Barbara Mason:

#1 Arizona Diamondbacks Blaze Alexander hit a home run that help beat the Sacramento Athletics 6-4 on Sunday. After winning seven out of their last eight games the A’s dropped their last two games to the Diamondbacks dropping the series going 1-2.

#2 The Diamondbacks Alek Thomas and Geraldo Perdomo had three hits a piece and the Diamondbacks won the rubber game on Sunday.

#3 The Nick Kurtz is not one to give up on Saturday night he got up ended in collision with catcher and teammate Shea Langeliers when both were going for a pop up to right of home plate Kurtz got the worst of it but stayed the game. Kurtz on Sunday helped the A’s cut the Diamondbacks lead when he hit a two RBI single in the fifth inning.

#4 The Diamondbacks closer Kyle Nelson came in in the ninth inning and picked up his first save for 2025. It came with a little work as the A’s JJ Bleday hit a solo home run. Nelson later got the A’s Gio Urshela to fly out to centerfield and Max Schuemann struck swinging.

#5 The A’s are off on Monday and open a three game series in Washington DC on Tuesday. For the A’s RHP Luis Severino (5-11 ERA 4.83) for the Washington Nationals Taijuan Walker (3-5 ERA 3.82) first pitch 3:45pm PT.

Panthers eliminated from IFL Playoffs, after being upset by Knight Hawks 36-31, Sunday Evening inside SAP.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The #1 seeded Bay Area Panthers (13-3, 0-1) were de-clawed and escorted out of the Indoor Football League Playoffs, after an odds defying loss, 36-31 to #4 Vegas Knight Hawks (10-6, 1-0) in the Capital City of the Silicon Valley at SAP Center on Sunday night.

The Panthers were in trouble early and never led during the 60-minute postseason battle, Although the home team and favorite opened the game with the ball, they weren’t able to take advantage of having the primary possession.

The Knight Hawks took full advantage of their initial possession. Vegas QB Ja’Rome Johnson scored on a 1-yard keeper for an early lead. With the Nevada guests being up by seven points, they were on the verge of doubling their score.

Panthers’ QB Josh Jones was picked off by CB Elijah Blades on their second possession. Vegas followed the turnover with another visit to the endzone. Signal Caller Jayden De Laura performed a 25-yard scramble over the goal line.

The Knight Hawks were up 14-0 with four and a half minutes left in the first quarter. That lead held up until the end of the first 15 minutes of gametime, 14-0.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, Vegas lit up the scoreboard again with yet another touchdown. Wide receiver CJ Windham Jr, caught a scoring pass for six points, but the PAT was not converted by kicker Ben Derby. The guests from the Silver State went up by 20 points, 20-0.

The Panthers finally scratched the scoring column when running back Josh Tomas rushed into paydirt, bringing his squad within 13 points, 20-7. BAP recovered their own kickoff and was seemingly in business, with momentum.

However, Vegas CB James Ceasar performed a trifecta on the defensive side of the ball. He forced a fumble by Jones, recovered the ball, then ran it into the endzone. This feat put the team up by 19, with another missed PAT, 26-7.

Tosin Oyekonmi scored on a rushing play, closing the deficit to 12 points. During the kickoff, Axel Perez booted the ball through the uprights, garnering a “Deuce” for his accuracy, and narrowing the margin they trailed by to 10 points, 26-16.

After a huge defensive stop by the Panthers, the inhabitants of the “Jungle”: were activating a shift in energy of the contest. Tomas was able to score another rushing touchdown with nearly a minute and a half left in the half. Perez; drop kick put two more points on the board and placed BAP in the closest position to the lead during the entire game, 26-24 VKH.

Right at the recess bell/whistle, Knight Hawks’ Derby kicked a crucial FG with triple zeros on the scoreboard. At the half, Vegas was up by five, 29-24.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, Vegas was not done scoring. Wide receiver Quinten Randolph caught a TD pass, to put his team up by 12, 36-24. However, about four minutes later, Panthers’ WR Tyrese Chambers caught a TD pass to get the Panthers within single digits again, 36-31.

That advantage lasted until the end of the third quarter. The final quarter was a defensive standoff, as both teams made big stops against each other. With a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter, the Panthers could still earn a dramatic comeback win on a touchdown.

The Bay Area Panthers turned the ball over on downs while attempting a pass to a receiver in the end zone, They also had a forceful goal line stance, turning Vegas over on downs, saving their playoffs life.

At the One-Minute Warning, the Panther had a golden opportunity for an extraordinary win in the final seconds of round 1 of the playoffs, On 4th and 11, they only used up five seconds on the clock.

Vegas on the other hand, only used 16 seconds, then commenced to miss a field goal that would have put them up by 8. With 30+ seconds on the clock, the Panthers had one more chance. Unfortunately for them and the SAP faithful, that dramatic victory did not come to fruition for the top-seeded team.

After 60 minutes of regulation, and the final incomplete pass, the Bay Area Panthers’ season ended in the quarterfinals, Final score, Vegas Knight Hawks 36, Bay Area Panthers 31.

As the Panthers will go into the offseason looking for answers, the Knight Hawks will be taking on either the Arizona Rattlers or the San Diego Strike Force, on the road for the Western Conference title. In the Eastern Conference Championship, the Green Bay Blizzard faceoff with the Quad City Steamwheelers.

Mason Miller is closing in the World Series

Former Sacramento A’s and current San Diego Padre reliever Mason Miller, one of the top flamethrower closers in the game, lasted three seasons with the Oakland A’s from 2023-25. He pitched a total of 137 2/3 innings and saved 48 games.

Now he is closing for one of the best teams in baseball, the San Diego Padres, a serious contender for the postseason, with the possibility of making it to the World Series. This was not a surprise; the A’s develop their talent, but in the end, they do not pay them, because they are cheap.

A’s fans understood this. Some were very cynical, and yes, the A’s received a top Padres prospect. One A’s fan told me, “Yes, and when that prospect plays for a couple of years with the A’s and shows everybody he is a stud, the A’s will trade him to the Yankees, where he will get paid.

“The interest [in Miller and J.P. Sears] was very high,” A’s general manager David Forst said. “Ultimately, it took a player of the caliber of De Vries to get our attention and get us to the negotiating table. … In Mason’s case, we knew it would take something special. When the Padres suggested they were open to including Leo, that’s kind of when this got serious.” If the ATH Front Office were a reality show on television, it would be cancelled in its first season. They are boring and predictable.

Raining Three’s Propel Aces to Win Over Valkyries 101-77

LAS VEGAS–After their worst game this season Saturday, the Las Vegas Aces (15-14) took on the Golden State Valkyries (14-14) Sunday. What a difference a day makes. Las Vegas played with passion, with energy, showcasing their defense, ball movement and they controlled the flow of this game from start to finish for a 101-77 win.

Jewell Loyd had a banner game finishing with 27 points. The team collectively hit 18 shots from beyond the arc eight of them coming from Loyd. A’Ja Wilson had a double double, Jackie Young had 20 points and Chelsea Gray finished with 11 in an amazing effort offensively and defensively.

Game recap: What a difference a day makes. The Aces came out with great energy, impeccable ball movement, pinpoint passing and those missed open shots were history. The Aces got right down to business in the first quarter leading after the first ten minutes of play 27-14.

Las Vegas kept the pressure on in the second quarter outscoring the Valkyries 23-11 and leading at the half 50-25. The Aces were not only shooting at over 51% but they were almost at 54% from beyond the arc. Las Vegas had also hit seven three’s to the Valkyries three.

The Valkyries will have an added challenge in the second half losing starter Janelle Salaun just before the half. She was ejected on a flagrant two for a hit on Jewell Loyd. Not a single Golden State player was in double digits.

The Aces A’Ja Wilson had ten points and Jewell Loyd playing off the bench had 13 points. The Aces would need to keep the pressure on the Valkyries in the second half and continue to dictate the pace and flow they had in the first half.

The Aces took a 27 point lead in the third quarter but Golden State started to shave it down. The Valkyries cut the 27 point lead down to 19. With under three minutes left in the quarter, the Aces pushed their lead back out to 64-38.

Jewell Loyd really showed up for this game hitting six of from beyond the arc. As the third quarter came to an end the Aces had hit 13 shots from downtown. They led after three quarters 76-50.

How the Aces would respond after yesterday’s loss was answered loud and clear. Seven minutes into the fourth quarter Jewell Loyd hit her seventh three and seven Aces had made shots from beyond the arc.

They were playing with unparalleled passion. The decision to play Lloyd off the bench took so much pressure off her and we saw that in her play in this game Sunday.

Game notes: After what had to be their most disappointing game this season the Aces bounced back Sunday when against the Valkyries at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Saturday the Aces was pulverized by the best team in the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx, by a shocking 53 point differential the final 111-58.

Just about anything that they did in Saturday’s game was not repeated Sunday. With the season winding down, every game right now is critical. Las Vegas will wanted Sunday’s game and played with energy; Saturday there was close to none.

Fans just don’t see this from the Aces and just what was going on may never be known. The bottom line is that this team has to put the loss behind them and got back to playing Aces basketball. This is a huge win for the Aces to get them back on track against the Valkyries.

The Aces now move a half game ahead of them in the standings. Golden State drops to eighth place, the Aces in seventh place. Every game going forward is of the utmost importance.

The Aces will meet the Valkyries again on Wed Aug 6 this game at Golden State’s home the Chase Center. They will be looking to pick up where they left off and hand the Valkyries another loss.

It will be a tougher matchup for the Aces who will no doubt play in front of a packed house of Golden State fans. They will be looking to again control the flow of the game and show up offensively and defensively. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Giants Beat Mets Via Monster Offense Winning 12-4 and Taking Series

After getting crushed in Saturday’s game 12-6 the San Francisco Giants (56-56) came roaring back in the final game of the series Sunday for a 12-4 win. The Giants had monster third and fourth innings scoring seven runs taking a 7-1 lead with five innings still left in the game for more offensive fun at the expense of the New York Mets (63-49) at Citi Field in New York.

The finished off the game in the ninth inning scoring five runs winning the game 12-4. Rafael Devers had an amazing game scattered with RBIs, hits and a home run thrown into the mix. He was on fire. Jung Hoo Lee also had a monster game with four hits on four at bats.

The Mets took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning 1-0. Francisco Lindor who had a huge game yesterday hit a solo home run to left getting a good start for New York.

After a quiet second inning for both teams, San Francisco turned the heat up in the third inning scoring four runs. Patrick Bailey got the inning going with a single that allowed base runner Jung Hoo Lee to score. The Giants delivered a blow to the Mets courtesy of a Rafael Devers three run home run taking a 4-1 lead. Bailey and Heliot Ramos both scored on that long ball.

San Francisco went on another rampage in the fourth inning scoring three more runs and taking a 7-1 lead. Patrick Bailey grounded into a fielder’s choice and Casey Schmitt scored for the first run of the inning.

Heliot Ramos hit an infield single reaching first base and allowing Jung Hoo Lee to score for another run. Rafael Devers would hit yet another single in the inning and Bailey scored for the third run of the inning and the 7-1 lead.

It had been rough outing for Mets starting pitcher Frankie Montas made even worse by the multitude of boo’s coming from the fans in the stands. Montas was relieved after four innings allowing seven hits, seven runs, two walks and three strikeouts. He was relieved in the fifth inning by Austin Warren who was pretty spotless going four innings allowing two hits, no runs. one walk and five strikeouts.

The Mets did score one run in the fifth inning. Francisco Alvarez hit a double and Jeff MCNeil scored on a Giant’s throwing error.

The Giants starting pitchers Carson Whisenhunt finished 5 1/3 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. He had a great outing but seemed to fatigue slightly in the bottom of the sixth inning. He was relieved by Jose Butto who took it into the seventh inning. He finished with 1 hit, no runs, no walks and 3 strikeouts. San Francisco pitching was stellar in this game.

It was an uneventful sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Not much for either team in the final innings of this game although In the ninth inning San Francisco threatened to add more runs to their tally. They loaded the bases with two outs looking for more runs. They got those runs adding a couple more taking a 9-2 lead when Dominic Smith singled Rafael Devers and Heliot Ramos home.

With two Giants runners still on base Casey Schmitt brought the gang home for his sixth home run of the season. Matt Chapman and Smith both scored on that home run for 3 more runs in a five-run inning.

The Mets were not finished but it was far too little too late. They scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but that would be it. The final was 12-4 in a well-rounded effort offensively and defensively for the Giants. San Francisco started the game on fire and finished in the same manner.

Game notes: The Giants took on the Mets in the rubber game of their series Sunday afternoon. The Giants were looking for a little payback after getting beaten soundly Saturday 12-6. San Francisco starter Carson Wisenhunt pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts. For Mets starter Frankie Montas pitched four innings, allowing seven hits, seven earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.

Next stop for the San Francisco Giants will be a three-game series with the Pittsburg Pirates Monday night. The Giant’s Justin Verlander will have another go at it after finally winning his first start of the season. He has a 1-8 win/loss record and a 4.53 ERA. At the time of this post the Pirates were still undecided as to who will take the mound in game one. First pitch for this game is scheduled for 3:40 PM PT.
