OAKLAND–On his return from the Soviet Union in 1919, San Francisco born muckraking journalist Lincoln Steffens proclaimed, “I have seen the future, and it works.”

The Oakland A’s returned last night from Texas, where we saw a glimpse of their future. Newcomers David MacKinnon and Shea Langeliers made their Athletics debut in Arlington during the team’s recent series against the Rangers, in which each team won two games.

MacKinnon, who had hit .189 in 37 at bats with the Angels, went 0 for 5 in his two games for Oakland, while Langeliers went 3 for 12 in his three with the Athletics.

26 rookies have played for the Athletics so far this season; with the addition of right handed pitcher Norge Ruíz, promoted today from Las Vegas, there currently are 15 of them on the roster. Three days ago, the A’s had four first year players in their batting order plus one, JP Sears, on the mound as the starter.

We know that Steffens was wrong about the Soviet Union, but at least he knew where the future he prophesied would occur.

We don’t even know where the newly incorporated members of Oakland’s active roster will play if and when they reach their peak years. How will they work out? We shall see what we shall see, although we might have to travel to Las Vegas to do that.

There were six rookies in the A’s starting lineup for tonight’s overwhelming 10-2 win by Seattle. They were, in addition to MacKinnon and Langeliers, Nick Allen, Jonah Bride, Skye Bolt, and Sheldon Neuse, who just sneaked in under MLB’s definition of “rookie,” 130 or less at bats in a previous season or seasons.

Tonight, Allen went 1 for 4 and had trouble with his baserunning and fielding. Bride went 1 for 3 and scored a run. Langeliers was held hitless in three ABs but drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Both Neuse and MacKinnon went 0 for two, and the latter made some pretty nifty plays at first.

A’s starting pitcher was Cole Irvin, in his first appearance against the Mariners this season. Last year, he went 0-5, 8.69 against them. He began the day at 6-10, 3.13 for 2022 but 0-3, 3.60 for August. Tonight Irvin left after six innings, in which he gave up six runs, five of them earned, on six hits, two of them homers, and two walks. He took the loss and now stands at 6-11, 3.33.

Irvin’s mound opponent was Marco González, the 30 year old one time first round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals. He brought a lifetime mark 58-45, 4.08 and a season’s record of 7-12, 4.18, with him to the mound.

This was his fourth start of the year against Oakland. In the three that preceded it, he went 2-1, 4.42. His best performance in that trio of games came on June 21, when he went seven innings at the Coliseum, allowing two runs, both earned, on seven hits, on way to an 8-2 win over the home team. González lasted six innings tonight.

He held the A’s to a pair of runs, one of which was earned, on a half a dozen hits and two walks. He struck out seven on his way to eighth victory against 12 defeats and an ERA of 4.08.

Seattle jumped to an early lead in their first turn at bat. Julio Rodríguez led off by dropping a Texas League single to right. Ty France sent him to third with a solid single, also to right. With the infield conceding the run by playing at double play depth, the A’s pulled off a 4-6-3 twin killing that emptied the bases before Irvin got Mitch Haniger to. fly out to Bolt in left center to end the inning.

Oakland took advantage of Seattle’s mistakes to come back in their half of the first. With one out, González plunked Bride with an 85 mph cutter. A walk to Sean Murphy put men on first and second.

Chad Pinder followed with an RBI single that plated Bride and sent Murphy to second. Both Murphy and Pinder moved up a base on left fielder Sam Haggerty’s errant throw home. That paved the way for Langleliers sacrifice fly to center, the third RBI in his short major league career, and put the Athletics on top, 2-1.

That lead lasted until the top of the fourth. With one down, Haniger pulled a single to left. Then Eugenio Suárez hammered a hanging curve 307 feet to left for his 21st home run of 2022 and 3-2 Mariner lead.

The green and gold almost tied it up in the home fifth. Alllen sent a two out double down the first line. It looked like he got a late start running, as if he thought the ball was foul, but he made it safely to second, and it wasn’t a close call.

When Bride drove a sharp single to left, Allen seemed a cinch to score. But Haggerty atoned for his first inning error to snab the Oakland shortstop with a perfect throw to the plate for the third out of the frame.

Allen’s troubles carried over into the top of the sixth. Up to then, he had fielded his position with grace and distinction. But he had trouble with the transfer after fielding Haniger’s one out grounder with Winker on first.

Allen recovered the ball, but his throw arrived late at first. The A’s challenged the call, but the verdict from New York was “the call stands.” It was a bad time for Allen’s lapse to have occurred; Suárez smacked his second round tripper of the night, this one 416 feet to center field, to stretch the Mariners’ lead to 6-2.

By the time Irvin got Frazier to pop out to second to end the frame, he already had thrown 92 pitches. He didn’t come out for the seventh, being replaced by the newest A of them all, Norge Ruíz.

González also made an early exit. He allowed singles to Murphy and Pinder and a walk to Brown to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame.

Righty Matt Brash relieved him, a move that the A’s countered by sending Vimael Machín to the plate to pinch hit for Neuse. After he struck out, Tony Kemp batted for MacKinnon. He grounded out to short for a force out of Brown at second.

Ruíz, like Irvin, suffered from a faulty defense. After Haggerty beat out a bunt to open the visitors´seventh, Rodríguez sent Brown to the warning track with a towering fly, which he dropped. Ty France and Jesse Winker followed with sacrifice flies that scored Haggerty and Rodríguez.

Neither run was earned, but Seattle now led 8-2. Diego Castillo hurled the seventh for the M’s, striking out Bolt and Allen in the process.

Seattle continued beating up on Ruíz in the eighth. JP Crawford started it by beating the shift, going to the opposite field for a single to left. Cal Raleigh sent a seeing eye single up the middle to move him to second, and Jake Lamb hit another seeing eye single, this one to left that brought in the ninth Mariner tally.

Ty France sent a bouncer that just eluded Allen’s glove to go into left for a single that scored Fraziere and put Lamb on third. That was it for the 28 year old right handed Cuban rookie. Southpaw Sam Moll replaced and induced a foul out to left from Jesse Winker. It now was 10-2, Seattle.

Penn Murfee was given the none too arduous task of holding onto this lead in the home eighth. He did it in 1-2-3 fashion. Chris Flexen was given the ceremonial task of keeping the A’s in check for the final three outs. It took him all of nine pitches.

The A’s and M’s will go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 4:15. James Kaprielian (3-7, 4.33) will pitch for the hosts and Logan Gilbert (10-5, 3.51) for their guests.

A’s lose to Mariners on Toro’s 9th inning single 2-1 at T Mobile

Tony Kemp (5) slides into third base before he was to score on a Sean Murphy sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. It would be the only run the A’s would score all game long against the Seattle Mariners at T Mobile Field in Seattle on Sat Jul 2, 2022 (@Athletics photo)

A’s Lose To Mariners in a Walk Off 2-1

By Barbara Mason

After winning Friday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners (38-42) the Oakland A’s (26-54) were looking to take the series lead with a win on Saturday as they started Saturday’s game with the series tied at 1-1. It was not to be as the A’s couldn’t hold a 1-0 lead and lost it in the eighth and ninth innings 2-1 at T Mobile Field in Seattle.

The A’s got on the board in the first inning when Sean Murphy hit a sacrifice fly and Tony Kemp scored giving Oakland the early 1-0 lead. The A’s would not score again through nine innings.

Oakland starter Paul Blackburn had an excellent outing going 6 1/3 innings, five strikeouts and no walks. Domingo Acevedo came in to relieve Blackburn in the seventh inning. The A’s ended the inning with their second double play of the game and the Seattle threat was thwarted for a second time in this game.

The defense for the A’s had been spectacular all afternoon as Oakland hung onto the slim 1-0 lead going into the eighth inning.

Seattle would tie up the game 1-1 in the eighth off a Justin Upton home run and this game took on an ugly turn.

Seattle would load the bases in the ninth inning with Marcus Wilson, Carlos Santana and Cal Raleigh aboard. The Mariners would register the walk off when Abraham Toro hit a single and Wilson scored for the M’s win.

It was a tough loss for the A’s but we saw a lot of good things happen in this game for Oakland. Paul Blackburn was excellent. The A’s defense was really good through eight innings. They just fell short in the ninth inning when it really counted. The home run in the eighth inning for the Mariners was the turning point in this game.

The A’s will get the opportunity to tie up this series tomorrow. Frankie Montas will take the mound for Oakland. He comes in with an ERA of 3.20. The Mariners Robbie Ray comes in with an ERA of 3.78. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM PT.

Oakland Levels the Series in Seattle with 3-1 win; A’s snap four game losing streak

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Oakland A’s (26-53) took on the Mariners (37-42) in Seattle and finally got back in the win column with a 3-1 win at T Mobile Field in Seattle snapping a four game loss streak on Friday night. The A’s dropped the first game of their four game series Thursday night 8-6. Oakland was looking to even the series in game two.

Marco Gonzales started the game for Seattle going six innings and allowing two runs. Penn Murfee relieved Gonzales allowing a Sean Murphy home run.

James Kaprielian was on the mound for Oakland. He had six very good innings allowing only one run. He worked himself out of a tough situation in the sixth inning. He kept the walks down and was hoping for his first win this season. He was relieved by Domingo Acevedo in the seventh.

It was a slow offensive start for both teams. In the fifth inning the A’s Tony Kemp scored when Sean Murphy singled giving the A’s a 1-0 lead. Oakland would add to their score in the sixth inning 2-0. Kemp singled driving Sheldon Neuse home.

The Mariners got their first run of the game in the sixth inning. Jesse Winker grounded out and Julio Rodriguez scored.

The A’s were hanging onto a 2-1 lead when in the seventh inning Sean Murphy hit a homer giving the A’s an insurance run 3-1.

Oakland got into trouble in the seventh inning when Seattle loaded the bases. Acevedo lasted less than an inning and was relieved by Zach Jackson who had a terrible outing but got out of the inning unscathed.

The A’s were able to hold onto this game, the final score 3-1. Kaprielian had his first win of the season and Lou Trevino had his second save of the season.

Oakland had a nice offensive game with 12 hits and creating a lot of scoring opportunities. Sean Murphy had a great game with three hits and two RBI’s. He hit the insurance home run in the seventh inning for the A’s.

Saturday the two teams will meet in game three of this series. Paul Blackburn (6-3, 3.12) will be on the mound for the A’s. For Seattle George Kirby (2-3, 4.08) is getting the nod. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM PT.

A’s woes continue as they fall to Mariners 8-6 at T Mobile

Oakland A’s hitter Tony Kemp takes strike three in the top of the ninth inning at T Mobile Field in Seattle against the Seattle Mariners on Thu Jun 30, 2022 (AP News photo)

Oakland’s offense came to life Thursday night against the Seattle Mariners. A’s hitters blasted three home runs and scored six times, but it was not enough as they lost to the Mariners 8-6. The A’s play the Mariners three more times before returning home to Oakland.

The A’s started rookie Adrian Martinez Thursday night. Martinez was making his second Major League start. His first start came on May 10th when he beat the Detroit Tigers. Logan Gilbert was on the mound for Seattle.

The Mariners drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning. Martinez hit the M’s outstanding rookie center-fielder, Julio Rodriguez, with a pitch. Martinez went to third on a double by Jessie Winker.

Martinez walked Mariners’ third baseman Eugenio Suarez to load the bases with no out. Martinez retired Carlos Santana for the first out. Martinez got Abraham Toro to foul out to left fielder Tony Kemp. Rodriguez tagged up and scored on the play as Kemp’s throw was not in time to nail Rodriguez. A’s catcher Sean Murphy threw out Winker as he tried to advance to third. Seattle leads 1-0

The A’s tied the game in the top of the third. Elvis Andrus led off the inning with a blast into the left-field seats. The tie didn’t last long as Julio Rodriguez hit his 13th home run. It was the fourth homer that Rodriguez hit against Oakland in seven games. Seattle led 2-1 after three.

The Mariners plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Adam Frazier singled. The next hitter, Dylan Moore, hitting a buck sixty-three, homered to make it a 4-1 game.

The A’s tied the game in the top of the fifth. With one out and Nick Allen at first, Tony Kemp singled, sending Allen to third. Ramon Laureano homered into the right-field seats to tie the game. The tie didn’t last long as Seattle scored four times in their half of the fifth.

With one out and a man on first, Carlos Santana singled to put men on at first and third. Abraham Toro singled to make it 5-4. Oakland’s manager Mark Kotsay brought in lefty A.J.Puk to pitch to the Mariners’ catcher Cal Raleigh.

Raleigh loves to hit against Oakland. He came through with a booming fly ball that bounced off Skye Bolt’s glove for a triple. Raleigh scored on Nick Allen’s throw past third baseman Sheldon Neuse. The Mariners in front 8-4.

The A’s added a run in the eighth, and Ramon Laureano hit a solo home run in the ninth to make it 8-6. Seattle held on to win 8-6. Seattle has won 17 of the last 19 games played against Oakland.

Game Notes: With the loss, the A’s are now 25-53. Seattle improved to 37-41. Adrian Marinez was the losing pitcher. He went 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs and seven hits. Seattle’s Logan Gilbert won the game and is now 9-3.

The hitting stars for Oakland were Ramon Laureano with two home runs and Sheldon Neuse with three hits and a walk.

The A’s announced from their press releases several player moves on Thursday.

The Oakland Athletics recalled right-handed pitcher Adrián Martínez from Triple-A Las Vegas, selected infielder Vimael Machín from Las Vegas, and reinstated outfielder Skye Bolt from the 60-day injured list, the club announced today.

The A’s also placed Jed Lowrie on the 10-day injured list retroactive to June 27 with a sprained left shoulder and optioned right-handed pitcher Adam Oller and outfielder Cristian Pache to Las Vegas. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated left-handed pitcher Adam Kolarek for assignment.

There was a significant decision made by the BCDC that improved the A’s chances of staying in Oakland. The story follows below from KTVU Fox 2 News.

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission voted Thursday to move forward with the Oakland A’s stadium project at Howard Terminal.

The commission voted 23 to 2 to reclassify a 56-acre terminal at the Port of Oakland as a mixed-use area where a new ballpark could be built. The vote is the first in a series of legal hurdles the team would have to overcome before it gets permission to break ground for the project.

The BCDC must give its permission whenever a port is to be used for a non-maritime purpose, such as a ballpark or stadium.

Other government bodies, including the Oakland City Council, must still vote on the A’s plans.

Mayor Libby Schaaf said the vote is a step in the right direction.

“Today’s vote moves Oakland toward a more prosperous future. Our city has historically been overlooked for major economic development, but today that story about Oakland changes,” Schaaf said.

The proposed 56-acre ballpark at the port has garnered some strong support and opposition.

“It’s a maritime port, a working maritime port, the fourth largest with 80,000 workers. By having a hotel and stadium and 3000 luxury condo units, you’re actually gentrifying and hurting the port,” said Steve Zeltzer of Schools and Labor Against Privatization.

The Oakland City Council will be attempting to put a non-binding advisory measure on the ballot in November. If they are to stay in Oakland, the A’s have several obstacles to overcome. Let’s hope things continue to go well in the A’s desire to build here.

New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton takes a cut in the bottom of the third inning for a home run against the Oakland A’s at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Wed Jun 29, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry, the New York Yankees Giancarlo Stanton pointed out after Wednesday’s game that he’s seen a lot of teams fold after the opposition gets the lead in ball games but not with this Yankees team as they came back after the Oakland A’s started out with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

#2 Stanton who homered in the game said this Yankee team knows how to push the envelope night in and night out and they do have one of the best offenses in baseball to make that stand up.

#3 Stanton and Aaron Judge who both homered for New York have the best record in MLB for comebacks leading majors with 24.

#4 The A’s after scoring those three runs in the top of the first inning continue to struggle at the plate where they didn’t score a run after the first inning and lost by two runs 5-3.

#5 After getting swept in New York the A’s are off to Seattle they will face the Mariners for a four game series starting Thursday night at T-Mobile Field in Seattle the A’s will start right hander Adrian Martinez (1-0, 0.00) going for the Mariners (Logan Gilbert 8-3, 2.44) 7:10 pm PDT

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: MLB will not charge A’s with relocation fee if they move to Vegas; A’s back in loss column after losing lead to Yanks

An overview of the Resort Corridor located by the Stratosphere and the Mirage Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip is a location that the A’s and the city of Las Vegas are interested in building a new ballpark. (file photo Las Vegas Review Journal)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 MLB is leaning towards Las Vegas make no mistake about it and didn’t hide the fact announcing Monday that the Oakland A’s will not be charge a relocation fee if they end up moving to Las Vegas.

#2 When the hockey Golden Knights moved to Vegas they were charged a $500 million relocation fee and the football Raiders were charged $378 million for a relocation fee. When asked why MLB will not charge the relocation fee to the A’s MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred refused to make a comment.

#3 The A’s are averaging 8,358 fans per game at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s are 30th the bottom in MLB attendance behind the 29th place Miami Marlins. MLB by waiving the relocation fee makes the appearance that they want to make the path to Las Vegas as easy as possible for the A’s.

#4 The Resort Corridor is a area that the A’s and Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft were pleased with MLB’s waiving of the relocation fee and the location is not far off the strip close to the Mirage Hotel.

#5 With all this under consideration if the Bay Commission passes the Port usage for the A’s the A’s need to get past the two environmental lawsuits from Southern Pacific and Amtrak. Then the next hurdle the affordable housing between the A’s and the City of Oakland.

Oakland Loses Another One to KC 3-1

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Oakland A’s (23-49) took on another struggling team In Kansas City, the Royals (26-43). Oakland is coming off three straight losses against Seattle at the Oakland Coliseum.

Cole Irving took the mound for Oakland. He pitched 5 2/3 innings and did have a good game but it wasn’t enough as the A’s failed to give him any run support in the 3-1 loss at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.

He has not won a game since April 24th. Something that he rarely does is allow more than a single home run in a game but Kansas City’s Edward Olivares did exactly that hitting one in the third inning and a second in the fifth inning.

The Olivares home run in the third inning gave Kansas City the early lead 1-0. In the fourth inning Seth Brown hit a single and drove Tony Kemp home to tie up the game 1-1.

Olivares’ second home run gave the lead back to the Royals in the fifth inning 2-1. The Royals solidified the win in the sixth inning when Carlos Santana singled driving Hunter Dozier home.

Zach Greinke pitched for Kansas City back with the Royals handing the A’s their fourth loss in a row.

Oakland had six hits in the game but but only managed the one run in the fourth inning. They could not string hits together and that has been a problem for the team all season. Seth Brown and Sean Murphy each had two hit games for the A’s.

Oakland will play game two of this series at 1:10 PM tomorrow afternoon. On the mound for the A’s will be Jared Koenig (1-2, 6.59) who had a great game in his last outing with a much improved ERA at 6.59. His last win was Sunday beating the Royals 4-0. Kansas City will start Brad Keller (2-8, 4.30).

The Oakland A’s Sheldon Neuse slides in at home plate in the bottom of the first inning to score the A’s only run of the game against the Seattle Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum on Thu Jun 23, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, Oakland A’s pitcher Frankie Montas left little doubt that he’s a front line pick for the July trade deadline. Montas went eight innings and threw a no hitter for 7.2 innings against the visiting Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum.

#2 Montas has been keeping opponents off balance all season long with his brand of pitching. Opposing teams know that they’ll have their hands full when they face him.

#3 The pair of wild pitches by reliever AJ Puk in the top of the ninth that allowed the tying run and go ahead run had to be one of Puk’s worst meltdowns this season?

#4 It also had to be a tough afternoon for A’s reliever Zach Jackson who loaded the bases for Puk and he ended up taking the loss because he was responsible for the runners left on base.

#5 The A’s open a three game series with the Royals tonight the A’s will start Cole Irvin (2-4, 3.14) he’ll be opposed by the Royals Zack Greinke (0-4, 5.05) this ball game is underway at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
