Sharks fall 5-1 to Kraken in final matchup

SAN JOSE–The Seattle Kraken scored three times in the second period and buried the San Jose Sharks 5-1 at SAP Center. The Kraken got the first lead of the game, with five minutes left of the first, Jared McCann scored his 19th of the season. They extended their lead to two, three minutes later, when Andre Burakovsky scored his tenth goal of the season. San Jose cut into that lead when Will Smith scored his 14th of the season. With the assists, Celebrini and Toffoli extend their point streaks to back to back games.

The Kraken extended their lead three times during the second period. The first was when Chandler Stephenson scored his 13th of the season at 7:39 of the second period. They extended their lead even further when Jaden Schwartz scored his 24th of the season. After letting in four goals, the Sharks brought in backup goaltender Georgi Romanov. Romanov let in his first goal at 18:07 of the second, Jared McCann with his 20th of the season, second of the night, putting him on hat-trick watch.

San Jose had trouble staying out of the box in tonight’s game, the Sharks committed three penalties while Seattle only committed two. Each team’s power-play was put to the test but neither team could capitalize. Both teams weren’t top ten in power-play rankings. San Jose is 22nd in the league and Seattle is 25th in the league.

Seattle dominated in nearly every aspect of the game. They registered 22 shots, had a 54.9 faceoff percentage, had ten penalty minutes, 14 blocked shots, and six steals. While Seattle had those stats, San Jose registered 24 shots, had a 45.1 faceoff percentage, 15 blocked shots, and three steals.

Alexander Georgiev was Saturday night’s starting goalie. After sitting out due to an injury, Georgiev’s first game back ended in a loss. In the loss, his record now moves to 7-18. For Seattle, Joey Daccord was Saturday night’s starting goalie. Daccord recorded the win, making 23 saves on 24 shots.

#1 The Edmonton Oilers Jeff Skinner scored on a tip that broke a 2-2 deadlock against the San Jose Sharks in the latter part of the second period that eventually got the Oilers the 3-2 win.

#2 Skinner’s goal came after Leon Draisatil left the game with an undisclosed injury. Draisaitl never returned and head coach Kris Knoblauch that he had no update to Draisaitl’s injury.

#3 The Oilers Connor Brown and Viktor Arvdisson scored to give the Oilers their third straight win. Goaltender Calvin Pickard save 27 shots.

#4 The Sharks are on a four game loss streak and are in dead last place in the Western Conference and have lost the first of three games against the Oilers with two weeks left in the season.

Kraken Sink Sharks 6-2, Montour Scores Twice

The San Jose Sharks fell 6-2 to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. Chandler Stephenson, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Brandon Montour (2 goals), Jaden Schwartz, and Eeli Tolvane scored for Seattle. Joey Daccord made 26 saves for the win. Carl Grundstrom and Tyler Toffoli scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made seven saves on 11 shots before being replaced by Alexandar Georgiev, who made 20 saves in the loss.

The Kraken took an early lead at 3:55 of the first period. Chandler Stephenson got a break away courtesy of a series of good passes to get the puck out of Seattle’s zone. By the time the puck got to Stephenson, he was almost at the Sharks blue line and there was no one between him and Askarov. The shot went by Askarov on the glove side. Assists went to Oliver Bjorkstrand and Eeli Tolvanen.

Carl Grundstrom tied the game at 17:55. Grundstrom skated to the net from the right side, passing back and forth with Will Smith, before taking the shot. Assists went to Smith and Mikael Granlund.

The Sharks outshot the Kraken 11-8 in the first period. There were no penalties called in the first.

Oliver Bjorkstrand made it 2-1 at 2:03 of the second period. Bjorkstrand scored from just outside the blue paint off a pass from Chandler Stephenson. Assists went to Stephenson and Vince Dunn.

Brandon Montour scored the third Seattle goal less than a minute later. S Wright stole the puck from the Sharks and passed it over to Montour, who was just skating into the zone. Montour took the shot from high in the slot and beat Azkarov on the glove side.

Jaden Schwartz made it 4-1 at 5:58. Jamie Oleksiak’s pass found Schwartz breaking away at the Sharks’ blue line. No one got in front of him as he skated in and shot at the puck past Askarov.

The Sharks pulled Askarov after that one and put Georgiev in net.

Brandon Montour scored his second of the night on a power play at 7:52. Montour caught a cross-ice pass from Jared McCann before shooting from the hash marks into the far side of the net. Assists went to McCann and Chandler Stephenson.

In the second period, several calls gave the Kraken two power plays and the Sharks one. The Kraken outshot the Sharks 17-9 in the second.

Tyler Toffoli got one back for the Sharks at 8:06 of the third period. Macklin Celebrini got a pass through to Toffoli in the center of the ice. Toffoli got a wrist shot through traffic in front of the net for his 18th of the season. Assists went to Celebrini and Henry Thrun.

Eeli Tolvanen made it 6-2 at 12:18. The Kraken took the puck from the Sharks on a zone entry and went to the other way. Tolvanen used Cody Ceci as a screen for his shot, Ceci being the only Shark to catch him as he skated into the zone. Joshua Mahura got an assist on the goal.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday back in San Jose against the visiting Montreal Canadiens at 7:30 PM PT.

Sharks Win 4-2 Over Kraken, Back-to-Back Wins for San Jose

The San Jose Sharks beat the Seattle Kraken 4-2 on Saturday. It was the second win against the Kraken in two days. Mario Ferraro, Luke Kunin, Cody Ceci and Will Smith scored for the Sharks. Mackenzie Blackwood made 36 saves for the win. Jaden Schwartz and Jared McCann scored for the Kraken. Joey Daccord made 19 saves in the loss.

After the 8-5 game just a day earlier, it would have been easy to expect a low-scoring game Saturday. That is not exactly what came to pass. The Sharks defense was somewhat more effective in this game than the last. After the game, Blackwood said: “They’re great. They really care. They commit to taking away the seams, they block shots when they can and they clear the rebounds.”

The Sharks finished scoring about half way through the game. Nonetheless, Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky said:

“What I like about our group tonight is we did that. We had a 4-1 lead opening night and we gave it up. And tonight we came into the third period and I thought it was one of our better periods of the night. So we learned how to play the right way.”

Mario Ferraro gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Mikael Granlund carried it over the blue line and then gave it away to Seattle. The Seattle player gave it back to the Sharks as Timothy Liljegren intercepted a pass. Liljegren sent it right back to Granlund, who found the Trailing Ferraro with a pass. Ferraro took some time before seeing his chance for a shot.

At the end of the first, the Kraken were outshooting the Sharks 13-9. The Sharks took two penalties and had one power play.

The Sharks scored early and often in the second. At 1:51, Luke Kunin followed Ty Dellandrea into the zone. Dellandrea made a drop pass as they approached the net and then continued on, acting as a screen for Kunin to shoot through. Assists went to Dellandrea and Jake Walman.

Cody Ceci made it 3-0 at 8:59, scoring his first road goal in more than three years and 127 road games. Maccklin Celebrini sent the puck to the net and it ended up going behind the goal and bouncing off the boards on the other side of the net. Ceci was on his way and met the puck in a perfect spot to shoot it in. Assists went to Celebrini and Walman.

Will Smith scored the Sharks’ fourth goal less than a minute later. Mikael Granlund carried the puck from the Sharks’ blue line almost to the Kraken net, skating two-on-one with Smith. Granlund made the pass and Smith shot it in. Assists went to Granlund and Klim Kostin.

The Kraken got on the board at 10:17. Matty Beniers shot the puck into the end boards from the blue line. The puck came back fast and Jaden Schwartz caught the pass and put it on net. It seemed like Blackwood did not expect that puck to come off the boards quite so fast. Assists went to Beniers and Oliver Bjorkstrand.

The Kraken again outshot the Sharks in the second period, 17-10. There were no penalties in the second.

Jared McCann scored the second Kraken goal at 6:27 of the third period. McCann Carried the puck into the zone and then shot it through traffic. Assists went to Ryker Evans and Brandon Montour.

With the net empty and a sixth skater on the ice, the Kraken put the puck in the net at 19:52. Beniers caught a rebound out of traffic in front of the net and shot it back in. The goal was called back, however, for goaltender interference. Yanni Gourde made contact with Blackwood’s head shortly before the goal was scored. The review was initiated by the Situation Room.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. against the Capitals at 4:00 PM PT.

#1 San Jose Sharks Klim Kostin picked up a Gordie Howe hat trick against the Seattle Kraken on Friday afternoon at SAP Center in San Jose. Kostin brawled with the Seattle Kraken’s Will Borgen during the mid third period.

#2 The Sharks who won 8-5 lit up the lamp with Jake Walman scored twice with Macklin Celebrini, Mikael Granlund, Will Smith, and Timothy Liljegren scored a goal and an assist.

#3 The Sharks Ethan Cardwell scored the go ahead goal in the third period it was Cardwell’s first career goal and gave San Jose a two goal 7-5 win.

#4 Seattle surrendered the most goals in a game for this season with eight. It was pretty much over when San Jose scored with four goals that pretty much put the game out of reach for the Kraken.

#5 Celebrini is tied in the rookie lead for goals with eight and Will Smith has six points in his last three games. After struggling the younger players might have found their stride.

Ethan Cardwell scores his 1st career goal as Sharks beat Kraken 8-5

SAN JOSE–After a back to back goal scoring throughout the game, San Jose came out with the win as Ethan Cardwell scores his first career NHL goal in his fourth game with the Sharks defeating the Seattle Kraken 8-5 at SAP Center.

The Sharks hosted the Seattle Kraken for a Black-Friday matchup Friday afternoon. This is the first matchup between the two teams this season, the last time these teams faced off was on April 11th in Seattle where the Sharks won 3-1. Luke Kunin, Kyle Burroughs, and Fabian Zetterlund all scored that game.

San Jose struck first at 2:07 on a slapshot by Timothy Liljegren assisted by Tyler Toffoli and Alexander Wennberg. After a turnover by San Jose, Seattle tied the game at 1 at 3:03. Oliver Bjorkstand registered his 6th goal of the season assisted by Eeli Tolvanen.

At 14:21, Seattle took a two minute penalty for interference. San Jose’s powerplay is 18.5%, ranked 19th in the league and Seattle’s penalty kill is 78.0%, ranked 18th in the league. With eight seconds left on the powerplay, Klim Kostin netted his first of the season assisted by William Eklund and Fabian Zetterlund. “Just trying to play hockey and enjoy hockey.” said Klim Kostin.

33 seconds after San Jose took the lead, Seattle tied it again at 2-2 with Chandler Stephenson scoring his second of the season assisted by Jaden Schwartz. At 18:48, Cody Ceci went to the box for a slashing call against Jaden Schwartz. After almost killing the whole penalty, Shane Wright scored his third goal of the season assisted by Oliver Bjorkstand and Chandler Stephenson.

At 2:45 of the second, Will Smith tied the game at three assisted by Mikael Granlund. Jake Walman took a double minor for high-sticking Tye Kartye which led to Shane Wright’s second powerplay goal of the night scored at 7:20 assisted by Chandler Stephenson and Ryker Evans.

Staying and attacking in the zone led to three more goals scored by Jake Walman, Mikael Granlund, and Macklin Celebrini all in the second. Granlund accounted for a goal and an assist on the night “Overall I think there was a good performance.” With one minute left of the second, Yanni Gourde scored his third goal of the season assisted by Ryker Evans and Brandon Tanev to cut San Jose’s lead down to one going into the 3rd.

At 7:37 of the third, Cardwell scored his first career NHL goal assisted by Nico Sturm and Henry Thrun. “The puck is going back home. I know they’re watching, I’m getting texts right now.” With 5 minutes left in the game, Jake Walman put the cherry on top scoring on an empty net to secure the 8-5 win.

San Jose will be back in action Saturday night in Seattle to take on the Kraken for back to back games. “Some things we have to be better at and look at tomorrow, I’m sure there’s some goals Grubauer wants back, we got fortunate on that side of it.” says Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky.

#1 Troy, what an event, what trip to Seattle no one would have expected the San Jose Sharks (19-51-9) to come away with a win at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle against one of the Sharks toughest foes the Seattle Kraken (33-32-13) and yet the Sharks came away with a two goal in 3-1.

#2 Troy also the Sharks took advantage of the Kraken mistakes scoring twice 51 second apart and something like capitalizing on a team’s mistakes can help you win games.

#3 It was the Kraken’s last home game in Seattle for the regular season the Kraken had been playing .500 hockey winning five of their last ten games. The Sharks meanwhile had been struggling they have lost five of their last ten games.

#4 Troy the two goals in the third period were key for the Sharks and Cooley kept the Kraken out of the net. The Sharks got a rare road win and the last time the Sharks and Kraken met was back on Mon Apr 1st when the Kraken got a 4-2 win in San Jose.

#5 The Sharks face off against the Minnesota Wild (37-32-9) for a 7:30pm PDT here at SAP Center to close out the Sharks regular season. The Sharks would like nothing more than to close out the home season with a win at SAP Center.

Sharks Beat Kraken 3-1, Devin Cooley Makes 49 Saves

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Seattle Kraken 3-1 on Thursday at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Luke Kunin, Kyle Burroughs and Fabian Zetterlund scored for the Sharks. Devin Cooley made 49 saves for the win. Brian Dumoulin scored for the Kraken. Joey Daccord made 20 saves in the loss.

This was Devin Cooley’s fourth NHL game, his second win and his first road win. After the game, Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro talked about the goaltender’s performance: “Obviously they got a lot of shots tonight, they got a lot of grade A chances and without him in net who knows what the result of the game would have been.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said:

“Outstanding. I mean he was unbelievable. Especially in the first period. I think we got better as the game went on but they certainly set the pace and the tempo for the most part tonight. We were very opportunistic but our goalie was outstanding. There’s really not much more to talk about really.”

Luke Kunin opened the scoring to give the Sharks a lead at 8:07 of the first period. Kunin redirected Henry Thrun’s shot from the left point. Assists went to Thrun and Klim Kostin.

Brian Dumoulin tied the game at 9:22. Catching a pass as he skated through the faceoff circle, Dumoulin slipped between the Sharks defense and beat Devin Cooley with a quick wrist shot. Assists went to Jordan Eberle and Jaden Schwartz.

Despite having the only power play in the period, the Sharks were outshot by the Kraken 20-11.

The Sharks had just one shot on goal at the midpoint of the second period, while the Kraken had 12. The Sharks had their second shot of the period at 12:51.

With their third shot of the period, the Sharks took a 2-1 lead at 14:46. Kyle Burroughs entered the zone late and caught a pass from William Eklund in the slot. Burroughs sent the puck through traffic into the far top corner.

Fabian Zetterlund made it 3-1 at 15:37. Mikael Granlund centered the puck from the goal line and Zetterlund was on hand to lift it into the net. Assists went to Granlund and Eklund.

The score remained unchanged through the third period. The Sharks were outshot again, 16-7 in the period. The final shot count was 50-23 Kraken.

The Sharks next play on Saturday in San Jose against the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 PM PT.

Bjorkstrand key in Kraken 4-2 win over Sharks at SAP

The Seattle Kraken’s (31-30-13) Oliver Bjorkstrand scored a goal and an assist and the Kraken had a three goal rally in the first period that eventually did in the San Jose Sharks (17-49-8) at SAP Center in San Jose 4-2. For Bjorkstrand it was his 20th goal of the season.

The Kraken also got a goal from Jared McCann, Marty Beniers, and Shane Wright. Veteran Shane Eberle picked up his 700th career point when he got an assist. Meanwhile Kraken goaltender Phillip Grubauer stopped 24 Sharks shots.

The Sharks dropped their tenth in 11 games, that’s 19 loses in 21 games so far. The Sharks Fabian Zetterlund picked up a goal and assist and left winger Klim Kostin scored a goal, William Granlund extended his point streak to five games when he picked up an assist.

Sharks goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood stopped 28 shots but allowed four goals and the first period kept him on his skates with three goals against in that opening period. Sharks head coach David Quinn said that they needed to be physically engaged to have a chance against a team like the Kraken. Quinn said they were not focused in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Next up: The Sharks host the Los Angeles Kings (35-25-11) Thursday night at SAP Arena in San Jose. The Kings are fourth in the Pacific Division and are on a three game losing streak. Face off is at 7:30pm PDT.
