Sharks chomp into Edmonton 6-3 to match season-high six goals

San Jose Sharks celebrate one of their six goals on Thursday night in Edmonton against the Oilers (globegazette.com photo)

~ By Pearl Allison Lo

~ It was a replay scorewise of the first time San Jose and the Oilers met this season, as the Sharks won again 6-3.

That date was on November 12. Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl scored then, but not this time, as the NHL’s leading point getter was shut out.  San Jose used three two-period goals to achieve victory behind netminder Aaron Dell, who faced at least 31 shots in his third straight game.

The Sharks kept the trend going with a fifth straight road victory when in Edmonton.

San Jose’s Timo Meier nearly had his second career hat trick, but instead settled for a game-high two goals and one assist. The last time he had a three-point night was when he had his first career hat trick, on December 28.

13 different Sharks had points on the night.

One game removed from their NHL debut, San Jose’s Maxim Letunov had his first goal and teammate Alexander True earned his first assist.

The Oilers had a Constant push in the Sharks’ zone, which led to their first goal. Dell was able to stop McDavid’s first attempt less than a minute earlier. Regarding the scoring play, while fishing the puck from the boards, Radim Simek sent the puck to Edmonton’s Ethan Bear at the blue line, who passed it to McDavid. McDavid then swung the puck towards Dell again, from far away, who sent the puck to Darnell Nurse. The puck then somehow found Sam Gagner, who had been seated in the slot, and he converted at 4:04.

Not too long after, the second player in NHL points this season, unthwarted by earlier, managed to score his 30th goal. He did it in his McDavid fashion, taking a pass from Nurse, located in the Oilers’ zone in the neutral area, and then using his speed to singlehandedly fly by two skaters en route to the net at 5:20.

Nurse received a penalty at 8:15 for throwing his stick to replace goalie Mikko Koskinen’s.

The game stayed 2-0 until Meier tipped Brent Burn’s shot at 11:01 to halve Edmonton’s lead.

San Jose killed off a penalty to Burns at 13:21 and then the Sharks got their second and third power play at once as Oscar Klefbom got a double minor for high-sticking Melker Karlsson at 16:33.  With Burns initially credited for the goal, the credit shifted to Evander Kane who was up in front. The play came about due to well timed puck movement. Joe Thornton made the cross-ice pass to Burns, who shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. The goal was also significant in that the timely conversion gave the Sharks their first with the man advantage in their last 12 tries.

The second period featured more of the newer Sharks, as they went ahead and then upped their lead even more with another two-goal period.

Letunov replied with a smile after he netted the rebound off Erik Karlsson’s shot three seconds before 7:07. The rookie fought and spun around with two defenders in front of him.

After the puck went high up in the air behind the net, True recovered it. He found Stefan Noesen camped near the net and fed him for a quick wraparound goal at 12:31.

Meier struck again at 5:05 of the third to make it 5-2. Kevin Labanc attracted three players to him, sent the puck off the boards and then took down one of the three players earlier. That opened the shot for Meier, who aimed from the left faceoff circle.

Bear then broke San Jose’s five-goal streak at 6:33, in a similar spot to Meier, but from the other faceoff circle, pushing the score to 5-3.

To cap the scoring, Meier threw the puck behind the net to Thornton, who in turn patiently fed him. Meier initially had a hat trick, but the scoring switched again, this time to Labanc, who was jostling up front.

Up Next: With a perfect road trip, the Sharks will now return home for a single game, as they see the Calgary Flames for the second time in three at 7:30pm Monday.

Dell in-dell-ible as Sharks rebound on the road, 3-1

photo from canadianpress.com: San Jose Sharks goalie Aaron Dell, right, deflects a shot from Calgary Flames’ Elias Lindholm during the second period of an NHL hockey game, Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020 in Calgary, Alberta

~ By Pearl Allison Lo

~ San Jose goalie Aaron Dell, playing in his home backyard, calmed the Calgary Flames Tuesday.

He made 30 saves, facing 31 shots, his second straight game of doing at least that, as the Sharks halted a five-game losing streak on the road and two-game losing streak overall.

Several of the San Jose players had noteworthy bookmarks during the game, the biggest one saved for last.

40-year old Joe Thornton garnered two assists, his latter one marking his 1500th NHL point. He earned the secondary assist on the Sharks’ final goal.

San Jose was outshot 16-9 in the first and had two power plays as Dell continued to make steady saves.

The Flames briefly had a 4-on-1 as time wound down during their first man advantage.

At 18:08, the Sharks’ Barclay Goodrow stuck up for Evander Kane against recognized fighter Milan Lucic when Kane was clocked.

San Jose’s Alex True and Maxim Letunov made their NHL debuts. True had one shot on goal, four hits, one block, one giveaway and went 60% on faceoffs in 12:52 of ice time. Letunov had one shot on goal, one takeaway and went 50% on faceoffs in 10:17 of ice time.

Calgary’s second power play was obtained when Kane committed high-sticking with 46 seconds left.  It ended up costing the Sharks as Elias Lindholm and Johnny Gaudreau made zigzag passes to score 59 seconds into the second, Gaudreau credited with the goal.

It would be all San Jose the rest of the way.

The puck bounced past in the neutral zone and Thornton scooped it up to go the other way. He then found Brent Burns, who scored his 500th point with the Sharks, from the top of the right faceoff circle at 3:57 to even the score at one apiece.

San Jose pulled ahead using more Goodrow Kane chemistry as Kane shot at the left goalpost and the puck bounced to the boards. Patrick Marleau corralled the rubber and made a behind-the-back pass to Goodrow, who finished by feeding Kane under T.J. Brodie’s stick at 8:02. It was Evander Kane’s 700th NHL game.

Finally, Thornton and Timo Meier helpd Kevin Labanc provide the icing on the cake as he  skillfully skated himself into a position to score at 7:45 of the third.

The Flames had four shots in the final frame.

Up Next: The Sharks will travel to Alberta’s capital city to take on the Edmonton Oilers Thursday at 6:30pm.

Sharks Fall to Lightning 3-0; fourth loss in six games

photo from sbnation: The San Jose Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell (30) under fire from the Tampa Bay Lightning as the Sharks get shutout 3-0 on Saturday night

By Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 on Saturday at the SAP Center. Goals were scored by Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat. Curtis McElhinney made 30 saves in the shut-out win, while Aaron Dell made 32 saves in the loss.

It was the Sharks’ first game since Tomas Hertl’s most recent injury, which will keep him out for the rest of the season. Additionally, Joel Kellman was injured Saturday. As of the post game report, he was still being evaluated.

The Sharks recognized Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s 1000th NHL game with a silver stick ceremony. Vlasic is the first defenseman to have played all 1000 games with the Sharks.

In the first period, the Sharks had just two shots on goal to Tampa Bay’s 13. Tampa Bay had power plays at 3:32 (Dylan Gambrell for holding), and 8:51 (Erik Karlsson for hooking). The Sharks had one at 6:56 (Cedric Paquette for roughing against Melker Karlsson).

The teams played four on four at 15:56 when Brenden Dillon went to the box for hi-sticking Yanni Gourde and Yanni Gourde went for roughing back. Two of Tampa Bay’s shots came with the man advantage.

Joel Kellman went into the boards during the first, with some help from Kevin Shattenkirk. Kellman got up slowly, and only skated one shift in the second period before leaving the game.

The Sharks went on a power play just 53 seconds into the second period. Erik Karlsson drew a tripping penalty that put Ondrej Palat in the box. The Sharks got three shots on that power play. They went on to out-shoot Tampa Bay for the first half of the period 10-4.

Nonetheless, Steven Stamkos scored at 4:04, after a lengthy play in the Sharks zone and a cross-ice pass from Kevin Shattenkirk that went between two Sharks defenders. The puck found Stamkos right in his old hangout around in the faceoff circle, and the shot went by Brent Burns and Aaron Dell and into the net. Shattenkirk and Mikhail Sergachev got the assists.

The Sharks killed off another Tampa Bay power play at 8:29 when Marc-Edouard Vlasic was called for hi-sticking Stamkos. The Sharks had their third power play at 13:30, when Tyler Johnson went for slashing Evander Kane.

By the end of the period, the Sharks had outshot the Lightning 18-8.

The third period was penalty-free and Nikita Kucherov put the game away at 17:57 with a backhand off as he skated out of the slt in traffic. Assists went to Stamkos and Brayden Point.

The Sharks pulled their goaltender with almost two minutes left and Ondrej Palat scored an empty net goal at 19:43. An assist went to Anthony Cirelli.

The third period shot count was 14-10 Tampa Bay. The face-off edge in the game went to the Sharks, who won 54% of them.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Calgary against the Flames at 6:00 PM PT.

Milestones Galore for Marleau in Sharks 4-2 Win Over Ducks

sfgate.com photo: The San Jose Sharks Patrick Marleau gets congratulations after scoring in the second period of Monday night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks at SAP Center in San Jose

By Jerry Feitelberg

It’s a shame Patrick Marleau didn’t pick a song for the first game the San Jose Sharks decided to use individual player songs, because he’d have a nice personal soundtrack to a few NHL milestones. Marleau scored a pair of goals in the Sharks 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in a return to action following the All-star break, moving into the top 25 all-time in goals and top-50 in points.

Stefan Noesen scored a pair of goals for the Sharks as well, and Erik Karlsson dished his 600th career point on an assist, but the night belonged to Marleau. He became just the 4th player all time with 22 consecutive 10+ goal seasons, joining Gordie Howe, Mark Messier and Alex Delvecchio. He also netted his 1,100th and 1,101st points in San Jose teal and picked up career game-winning goal 101 as a Shark (109 in total).

It was Stefan Noesen who opened the scoring for the Sharks on a deflection 1:55 into the game but Marleau’s veteran savvy led to the Sharks’ next strike. Marleau picked off an errant Ducks pass in the slot before beating John Gibson for his 9th goal of the year.

It was also Marleau’s 650th career goal, moving him into a tie with Guy LaFleur for 26th place all time in goal scoring. The goal was also Marleau’s 1,100th as a Shark and tied him with Rod Brind’Amour for 50th all-time in points with 1,184.

Ondrej Kase scored the first of the Ducks goals short-handed 9:04 into the second, but Marleau responded on a wrist shot with 4:28 left in the 2nd to move past LaFleur and Brind’Amour for his place in history. By edging past LaFleur. Marleau found himself moving further up the ladder. His second goal places him in 25th place, tied with Mike Modano’s 651 career tucks.

It also put him in the company of the aforementioned Hall of Famers by having 22 double-digit goal total seasons.

Noesen scored his 2nd goal of the game 2:28 into the third, with Erik Karlsson assisting for his 600th career point. A late power play goal by the Nick Ritchie of the Ducks soured an otherwise strong showing from Aaron Dell who made 26 saves on the night.

The Sharks look to continue the second half push against the team that smoked them heading into the All-star break when the Vancouver Canucks come to the Bay Area Wednesday night.
