San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc Edouard-Vlasic (44) reaches his stick underneath the Boston Bruins center Trent Frederic (11) to get at a puck in the first period at SAP Center in San Jose on Thu Oct 19, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The Boston Bruins came into San Jose on Thursday night and got scoring help from Brad Marchand and James van Riemsdyk and wasted no time doing it scoring 21 seconds apart in the first period.

#2 The Bruins David Pastrnak added the third and final goal and goaltender Linus Ullmark stopped 26 Sharks shots.

#3 This was the final game of the Sharks four game homestand where they were swept for the entire four games to start the season. How surprising or not surprising was it that the Sharks lost all their games on home ice to start the season.

#4 The Sharks join two other teams in NHL history to open at home and lose four straight games. The 1971-72 California Golden Seals with two loses and two ties and the 1997-98 Calgary Flames lost three and had a tie.

#5 The Sharks open a five game road trip starting tonight in Nashville after seeing what happened in the last four games in San Jose how difficult do you see it for the Sharks to win this one tonight and the rest of the four games that’s waiting for them on this trip.

Los Angeles Kings left wing Pierre-Luc Dubois (80) and San Jose Sharks Kyle Burroughs mix it up in the third period at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Thu Oct 5, 2023 (still photo by the San Jose Sharks)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The San Jose Sharks came up a goal short to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night in their final pre season game in overtime 4-3. The Sharks got goal help from Alexander Barabanov, Mike Hoffman and Thomas Bordeleau.

#2 The Sharks in the first period, Mikael Granlund impressed forechecking the Kings Drew Doughty and stole the puck and dished it off to William Eklund but Eklund’s shot was turned away by Kings goaltender Phoenix Copley.

#3 Also in first period action the Kings Adrian Kempe got behind the Sharks Bordeleau and got a pass off. Bordeleau went to block the pass instead of going in for Kempe and Matt Benning got on Kempe but the skill set of Bordeleau trying to block was impressive.

#4 Bordeleau scored twice and his goal coming in the third period, as Eklund passed to Bordeleau as Eklund was on the same skate speed with Bordeleau who beat Copely in a strike that lit the lamp.

#5 Sharks open up the regular season on Thu Oct 12 at SAP Center in San Jose against the NHL Champions Vegas Golden Knights. The Sharks who beat the Knights on Tuesday is not an indicator as both teams were using their bench, free agents, and trying to see who will make the final roster cuts. Opening night will be a true test for San Jose against Vegas.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa: With Couture out Sharks looking for shot in arm on offense

San Jose Sharks center and team captain Logan Couture is out with a lower body injury for the rest of camp and pre season. His return could be when the regular season starts Thu Oct 12, 2023

SJ Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 Mary Lisa, The first day of camp everybody usually is pretty positive about the upcoming season but when the news was dropped that center and team captain Logan Couture would miss camp and pre season games it gives some doubt in the dressing room about team direction doesn’t it?

#2 The Sharks got the news one hour into the first day of camp that Couture would be out with a lower body injury. With Couture out of the line up what does the offense look like and will enough practices and pre season games help find an answer for his absence?

#3 The odds makers are saying this upcoming season could be the worst start in Sharks history since they broke into the league as an expansion team in 1991-92.

#4 The Sharks who will not be able to lean on former teammates defenseman Erik Karlsson (now with Pittsburgh) and last year’s top scorer Timo Meier (New Jersey Devils) and the way things are looking they might see a difference in their absence right off the next face off?

#5 Nico Strum said there are nine guys with expiring contracts and there is going to be more turnover expected and this rebuild is going to take a while. No doubt there will be an adjustment period.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Preds Johansen shows that he can do it by himself gets gamer in overtime for 1-0 win

The Nashville Predators and left winger Filip Forsberg (9) kept San Jose Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen (34) off balance night in a goaltending duel that went into overtime at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville (photo from San Jose Sharks)

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 Mary Lisa it was a battle that felt like it took all night both goaltenders for the San Jose Sharks (29-33-10) Kaapo Kahkonen and for the Nashville Predators (42-26-5) Juuse Saros. Saros got the perfect game stopping all 25 Sharks shots for the 1-0 overtime shutout. Kahkonen stopped 41 Predator shots.

#2 Mary Lisa there’s a lot that goes into throwing a shutout Saros had to defend against some of the Sharks top shooters Matt Nieto led with four shots, Sasha Chemlevski, Rudolfs Balcers, and Tim Meier had three each to no avail.

#3 Mary, talk about the goal by Ryan Johansen in the overtime stanza at 3:18 it was the game’s only goal and with Kahkonen defending the net as well as he was and the goal coming in the late part of the overtime it gave the Predators a great chance to wrap up the game.

#4 One other note the Predators defenseman Mark Borowiecki was crosschecked in the face and slashed on the hip on Sun Apr 10th by the Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin. Malkin received a double minor and was suspended for the next four games. The league ruled the hit was intentional and not some defensive inadvertent move.

#5 It’s off to Chicago and the United Center and the Blackhawks who have lost eight straight games. The Hawks have not won a game since Mar 24 in a shootout over the Los Angeles Kings 4-3. Tell us how you see the Sharks and Blackhawks matching up Thursday night.
