San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Pence buys some time from Giants shopping with game-winning two-run double

On the SF Giants podcast with Morris:

There was so much talk about shopping Hunter Pence that it sounded like it was good as gold that he was going to get traded. Pence’s two-run RBI double might have saved his job for now in a Sunday game that won it for San Francisco.

The Giants have improved on the homestand with a 5-2 record with three more games left with Colorado starting Tuesday night. The Rockies are in fourth place in the NL West. Morris will tell us how he sees this series coming up. Giants outfielder Austin Jackson’s name had come up as being shopped by SF, but the Giants are concerned like Pence giving up Jackson–they could eat a lot of his contract.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Battle of Brandon Bats–Crawford and Belt hitting over .300 gives Giants’ offense a punch

On the SF Giants podcast with Miguel:

The Giants’ first baseman Brandon Belt’s success of .304, 65 hits, 35 hits and 12 homers and Giants’ shortstop Brandon Crawford’s success of .310, 78 hits, 32 RBIs and eight home runs. Both are the main staples in the Giants’ lineup. Also, Giants’ outfielder Hunter Pence was noted as struggling as he had two RBIs last Wednesday against the Miami Marlins, but in hitting and defense, Pence has struggled. What has been his frustration?

Pitcher Madison Bumgarner improved his record to 1-2, tossing an eight inning, three-hit shutout and got bullpen help from Mark Melancon. Who closed the door on the Padres on Thursday night in the ninth inning?

Giants and Padres tonight from AT&T Park. The Giants will go with Chris Stratton 8-4. Michael goes over Stratton’s performance of late.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips and Michael Duca: Giants with lowest save percentage in NL looking for relief

On the SF Giants podcast with Morris and Michael:

The San Francisco Giants have the lowest save percentage in the MLB. The Giants are not even in the ballpark when it comes to saves with the rest of the National League bullpens. The Giants’ save percentage is 14 saves in 30 opportunities.

Right around 52%–surprisingly, San Diego is No. 1 at 82%. Obviously, the Padres haven’t had that many save opportunities that allowed the percentages to jump up. If your closer is having a great season (statistically) and you got 14 blown saves, four of which are attributed to Giants’ relief pitcher Hunter Strickland, you have to ask how do you characterize that?

Hunter Strickland out 6-8 weeks with a broken right hand

By Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO — You can add another player to the list of San Francisco Giants who have been injured during the 2018 season.

Hunter Strickland, who became the team’s closer during the season after replacing the injured Mark Melancon, will be out anywhere from six to eight weeks after breaking his right hand after Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins at AT&T Park.

Strickland, who blew just his fourth save of the season, broke his pitching hand after he was pulled from the game and punched a door.

Prior to breaking his hand, Strickland converted 13 out of 17 saves on the season and in Monday’s game, it was the second consecutive blown save for him.

It was just the fourth time in Strickland’s career that he allowed two or more runs in the same game.

Giants’ hand surgeon Dr. Scott Hansen is repairing the broken right hand of Strickland.

Either Sam Dyson or Tony Watson will fill the closer role until further notice, and Pierce Johnson will be recalled from the Triple-A Sacramento Rivercats to take Strickland’s place on the roster.

Strickland is the second Giants player to have hand surgery today, as Evan Longoria underwent surgery on his right hand earlier today in Los Angeles.

Longoria, who broke his right hand after he was struck on the hand by a Dan Straily pitch in the series finale on Thursday afternoon at Marlins Park, a game that the Giants would eventually win 6-3 in 16 innings.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: With Posey’s injuries over the years, Bart looks to be Giants catcher in the future

photo from abc7.com file: Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart signed the biggest contract for a position player coming out of college with the San Francisco Giants over the weekend

On the SF Giants podcast with Morris:

It’s early, but with some of the injuries that San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been enduring over the last few years and currently riding the bench with hip and back issues, the Giants’ most recent signing of college phenom catcher Joey Bart gives them some confidence about their future at the position. Morris takes a look at the highly touted Bart and the Giants plans to use Bart as the catcher of the future.

The Giants’ Brandon Belt and Nick Hundley took the Los Angles Dodgers deep off starter Caleb Ferguson.  Belt ripped his 12th home run of the season and Hundley with his eight round tripper. Giants starting pitcher Chris Stratton got in a quality start going six innings, three hits, a run, one walk and struck out three hitters to shut down the Dodgers on Sunday 4-1.

Back to Bart, Bart is expected to visit AT&T Park on Tuesday night. He might even suit up and take a few swings, but that’s yet to be seen. The Giants signed Bart for a record $7.25 million the highest college signing for a position player.

Moons over Miami: Tonight the Giants host the Miami Marlins at AT&T Park. The last time these two teams met at Sun Trust Field in downtown Miami the Giants were nearly swept losing three games out of four. The Giants will start Andrew Suarez, who’s 2-4 and a 4.92 ERA in a 7:15 pm first pitch.

MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O: From Oak to Ok–A’s Murray will rejoin A’s next year; Giants looking to get tracked with road win tonight

photo from normantranscript.com: The Oakland A’s Kyler Murrray joined the A’s for workouts on Saturday at the Coliseum. Murray signed with the A’s to play on the club next season as he will join the Oklahoma Sooners as quarterback in August for the 2018 NCAA season

On the MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

Today’s opponent for the Oakland A’s, the Los Angeles Angels, came in Friday night with a five-game losing streak, which they ended and the A’s extended their four-game losing streak to four in the loss to the Angels.

The A’s will try and reboot and get game two of this home three game series today at the Coliseum today. The A’s got a little pick me up when Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray was selected and worked out with the team over the weekend. Murray said he would quarterback at Oklahoma and after football season Murray will be back swinging the bats for the A’s for spring training in February.

Murray has a deal worth over $4 million with Oakland and his contract allows him to play football and go to school at Oklahoma which would be during August through early January.

San Francisco Giants update: The San Francisco Giants’ road problems continue after they dropped the opener of their three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night 3-2 at Dodger Stadium. The Giants are suffering on offense and couldn’t rally on Friday night.

The Dodgers are fighting to get into first place and they know the Giants are in a world of pain, losing four of their last five games, and are out their All-Star caliber players: pitcher Johnny Cueto and third baseman Evan Longoria with injuries.

The Giants were missing Brandon Belt due to an appendix surgery. Belt is scheduled to be suited up at Dodgers Stadium tonight and he was on a roll before he had to have the surgery. Belt made a fast recovery and is anxious to start swinging the bats.

Charlie O does the A’s podcasts weekly and is filling in for Matt Harrington on the MLB podcast today at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Longoria expected to be out for 3 weeks after hit with 89 MPH fastball in hand

On the SF Giants podcast with Michael:

The San Francisco Giants’ Evan Longoria broke his hand during an at-bat against the Miami Marlins in game four on Thursday afternoon in Miami. Longoria will be out for an estimated three weeks and could be back by early July.

Longoria got hit in the back of the hand by an 89 MPH fast ball in the fourth inning. He realized after getting hit by the pitch that he couldn’t play or use the hand afterwards. Pablo Sandoval said Longoria is a great teammate, a great hitter, and Sandoval said he hopes his recovery is quick so that he could help the club in the postseason.

The Marlins almost swept the Giants, but Giant starter Ty Blach pitch 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball and the Giants wound up beating the Marlins 6-3 in 16 innings. Longoria was hitting .246, 10 home runs, 34 RBIs and committed 11 errors.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca and Morris Phillips: Giants drop two straight to last place Marlins; Marlins staffed with lots of unknowns

Miami Marlins pitcher Trevor Richards pitches during the second inning of a Major League Baseball game against the San Francisco Giants at Marlins Park on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. David Santiago dsantiago@miamiherald.com

On the SF Giants podcast with Michael and Morris:

You could have predicted that the San Francisco Giants would have gone into Miami playing in front of nobody, playing a bunch of guys they’ve never faced before. It seems to be a characteristic of this franchise back to the days of former Giants pitcher Charlie Lea–guys who haven’t beat anybody manage to notch their first Major League wins against the Giants.

It happened with the Miami Marlins starting pitcher Trevor Richards, a 25-year-old right hander. The Marlins were 0-3 coming into the game. Richards walks the first two batters. Obviously, Richards is nervous if he walks the first two guys and gives up a run in the first inning without allowing a hit. Richards goes on to allowing just two hits, struck out three and walked two batters to win the ball game.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Crawford has a swing going that would make Rogers Hornsby proud

sfexaminer.com file photo: Brandon Crawford who went 4-4 on Sunday and just missed the cycle leads the Giants with a .326 average has been a force at the plate

On the Giants podcast with Morris Phillips:

San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is swinging the bat that would make former Major Leaguer Rogers Hornsby proud. Hornsby was a Hall of Fame second baseman and shortstop that hit .350 career from 1915 to 1937. Crawford on Sunday hit .326 for this season.

Not an easy achievement Crawford was able to get his perfect 4-4 on Sunday off Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer is one of the best pitchers in the N.L. Crawford got a first inning single, Crawford also hit for a two-run home run, a double in the sixth, in the fourth at bat Crawford missed the cycle with a double with hit up the left field line.

Giants pitcher Derek Holland went five innings, three hits, walked two, struck out four, Holland is now 4-6. The Giants start a four-game series in Miami Monday night. The Marlins have struggled all season, but Morris gives his take on how he sees this series.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Bochy on Crawford, “You couldn’t ask for a better hitter”

sfgate.com file photo: San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford had a break out month of May and has started out June with an extra innings game winning base hit on Wednesday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael:

The Giants’ run of six wins out of their last seven shows the team has come together like no other time of the season. Giants’ shortstop Brandon Crawford has had a great month of May and continues with a game-winning hit on Wednesday a 10th inning RBI single.

Manager Bruce Bochy said of Crawford, “We couldn’t have asked for a better hitter up there.” The Giants head on a nine-game road trip starting tonight in Washington. The Giants have a road record 12-20 and are looking to improve their record. With what’s happened lately, can the Giants do it?

Hunter Pence made his return on Wednesday with a hit in one at-bat. How much of an impact will he make now that he has returned?
