Changes for Kings Loom After Losing to Timberwolves 124-110

Throughout three quarters the game between the Sacramento Kings (3-10) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (8-4) was a wild ride with the Kings trailing by a single point after three. In the early minutes of the fourth quarter we saw what has become the Kings inability to close out games.

After three minutes of play the Timberwolves took a nine-point lead 103-94. The final was 124-110. The Kings can hang with the best in the league but they just cannot finish. While it was a far better effort then Wednesday’s game it is still another loss dropping the team to a discouraging 3-10 season record.

Domantas Sabonis had the high for the Kings with 34 points and Zach LaVine had a solid second half finishing with 25 points. The changes that Head Coach Doug Christie had alluded too could be eminent.

Game recap: Going into the first quarter both Sabonis and Malik Monk took the court. After the first 12 minutes of play the Kings were keeping pace with the Timberwolves but trailed 35-30.

Sacramento kept at it outscoring the Timberwolves in the second quarter 31-26 and going into the locker room at the half, this game was tied at 61. Sabonis took Head Coach Doug Christie’s words to heart scoring 24 points in the first half.

Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan were stagnant with Westbrook coming away empty and DeRozan scoring only two points. Sacramento was hitting 50% of their three-point attempts which were instrumental in a game so very close.

Both teams were terrible from the line with the Kings shooting at 56% and the Timberwolves not much better with 63%. The Timberwolves largest lead of the half was 11 points which the Kings were able to erase going into the third quarter with the game tied at 61.

Going into the third quarter the question remained; with the exception of Sabonis could these starters get their rears into gear. Could they play the brand of basketball that we know they are capable of.

The Kings got off to a good start in the third taking a 74-69 lead early. They have been struggling all season closing out games but this game looked different as they continued to extend their lead with as much as a seven-point lead.

Time would tell if Coach Christie’s harsh words resonated in any way. They certainly had for Sabonis and would any of the other starters follow suit. The first half indicated that they did but they had a long way to go in this game.

The Kings had a five point lead going into the final five minutes of the third but let the Timberwolves back on top with three minutes left in the quarter 88-84. The third quarter closed out with the Timberwolves clinging to a one-point lead 92-91.

Could the Kings dig deep and close out the fourth quarter? Going into the final quarter this game was up for grabs and Sacramento had a great opportunity to prove themselves.

Early in the fourth quarter this game was tied at 94. It all came to an end three minutes into the quarter when Minnesota took a 103-94 lead prompting a Sacramento time-out. Was history repeating itself or could the Kings right the ship? The reality in this game was yet another fourth quarter meltdown by Sacramento. The final was 124-110, the Kings season record dropping to a dismal 3-10.

The Kings hung with the Timberwolves through three quarters but as seen in the past could not close the game out. Sabonis had the game high with 34 points and 11 rebounds another double double. Zach LaVine finished with 25 points but DeRozan was very quiet finishing with six points. Despite playing for 16 minutes Malik Monk could have been hampered by his sore ankle not scoring at all with only one rebound.

Every Minnesota starter finished the game with double digits. Anthony Edwards had his team high with 30 points. Julius Randle had a double double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Donte Divincenzo had a solid game turning in 20 points and 6 rebounds.

Game notes: Friday night the Kings took another tough loss and their loss streak hit five games. While it is still early in the season there is steep trouble for the Kings and Head Coach Doug Christie is livid as evidenced by a profanity-laden postgame press conference after a drubbing by the Atlanta Hawks 133-100 Wednesday night.

The Hawks were without ace Trae Young and as it turned out they didn’t need him to come away with the win. Christie called that game shameful Keon Ellis had the team high off the bench with 20 points in that game but the starting lineup was abysmal at best.

Domantas Sabonis and Russell Westbrook barely cracked double digits and DeMar DeRozan finished the game with four points. The starters collectively had 45 points while the bench finished with 55 points. While Ellis has been overlooked at times which is puzzling considering the great defense he provides and he has proven to be a strong offensive player.

Much of what Christie said to the team cannot be put into print but suffice to say he was far from pleased. One could not blame him for his colorful rhetoric considering the play the Kings saw against the Hawks. He also said he would not be looking at the tape, seeing it live once was more than enough for him.

Many of the fans began to exit the building when the team was trailing by 37 points going into the fourth quarter. The team was booed off the floor at game’s end. Christie also hinted that there were big changes coming for the team and that the front office was completely on board with those changes. “We’re going to find people who want to compete period,” Christie said.

The Kings have faced the most difficult schedule in the NBA and Friday night they will face yet another tough game. The Sacramento locker room is not a happy place right now and has not been since the start of the season.

The Kings have a lot of talented players who are growing more and more frustrated. Going into Friday’s game both Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk were both listed on the injury list. Sabonis is struggling with a left ribcage contusion and Monk is also questionable with left ankle soreness. They are game-time decisions.

The Kings will continue on the road; they’re next stop in San Antonio for a matchup with Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for Sunday November 16 at 1:00 PM.

NBA podcast Michael Roberson:

#1  The Cleveland Cavaliers Donovan Mitchell will miss the next game against the Chicago Bulls Tuesday night. Mitchell injured his left ankle in a game in Sacramento on Sunday.

Mitchell stepped on the Sacramento King’s Keon Ellis’ foot at center court and lost his balance and rolled over on his left ankle. Mitchell was in pain and had to be escorted off the floor with the trainers to the dressing room.

#2 Portland Trail Blazers general manager Joe Cronin was given a multiyear deal with the Trail Blazers on Monday. The Blazers have improved to over 14 wins compared to this time last season. Portland has 35 wins this season an have gone 22-16 since Jan 19th.

#3 New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson who was out over a month returned last Sunday to face the Phoenix Suns scoring 15 points and getting six assists to help the Knicks to a 112-98 win. While it wasn’t Brunson’s best outing he hit three out of nine from the floor and miss some of his jump shots. Brunson is trying to get his rhythm and timing back.

#4 The Denver Nuggets have been snake bitten since losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 1. The Nuggets now have lost three in row since that 140-139 loss. The loses have been piling up since losing to the San Antonio Spurs Apr 2, Golden State Warriors Apr 4, and Indiana Pacers Apr 6. You would think with all that talent they have they would have been able to snap out it by now?

#5 Some fan was getting smart with the Washington Wizards Marcus Smart and it turned into a shouting match. Smart said a fan crossed the line and was heckling the Wizards bench at TD Garden in Boston while the Wizards were playing the Boston Celtics. Smart a former Celtic said, “You never want to see that, especially for a guy who’s coming back and has given the city everything he has.”

Sacramento Kings podcast Jeremiah Salmonson Fri Mar 7, 2025: Kings need to line up wins if they’re going to make post season

Sacramento King forward Keegan Murray center tries to squeeze between Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (left) and forward Michael Porter Jr (right) in the first half at Ball Arena in Denver on Wed Mar 5, 2025 (AP News photo)

Sacramento Kings podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson:

#1 The Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic scored 22 points and had 14 rebound and teammate Russell Westbrook had 25 points and the Nuggets came back from behind to overcome the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night at Ball Arena 116-110.

#2 The Kings defense had a tough time defending the Nuggets Jamal Murray who scored 24 point and the Nuggets with the win had won the first three games against the Kings this season.

#3 Sacramento Kings DeMar DeRozan had scored 18 of 35 points that help give the Kings a 93-84 lead towards the end of the third quarter. Westbrook however beat back the tide scoring seven points in a row.

#4 The Kings Zach LaVine scored 12 of 20 points and had two 3 pointers that were deep outside shots, and it kept the Kings in the game by three points.

#5 The Kings are now ninth in the Western Conference behind the Clippers, Minnesota and Golden State for a shot at a playoff spot. The Kings tip off against the San Antonio Spurs at Golden 1 in Sacramento on tonight at 7:00pm PST. The Spurs are 13th in the Western Conference and lost four of their last ten games. Crucial game for the Kings if they plan to make that climb to sixth place for that last playoff spot.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Kings host Magic Wednesday; Levine to make his first appearance

Sacramento Kings Isaac Jones (17) drives the ball against the Minnesota Timberwolves guard Rob Dillingham (4) in the first half at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Tue Feb 4, 2025 (AP News photo)

On the Sacramento Kings podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, how much of the decision to move De’Aaron Fox was a Kings decision or a Fox decision. After the firing of former Kings head coach Mike Brown thing took a different turn for Fox who like working with coach Brown and wasn’t exactly happy with the change.

#2 There was that period that Fox was on the trade block, Fox a long time King was a mainstay with the team but during that trade search were the Kings having internal problems was the trade rumors a distractions.

#3 Zach Levine is the anticipated King to come aboard and the Kings are hoping he make up for the loss of Fox. He didn’t play in the Kings last game against the Minnesota Timberwolves and is expected to be in the line up on Wednesday night in Sacramento against the Orlando Magic.

#4 What role, what expectations are expected from Levine once he does get on the floor and play his first game with the Kings?

#5 The Kings had struggled and after the Fox trade to San Antonio they were able to get back in the win column which they did against the Timberwolves on Monday night. Did dealing Fox pretty much smooth out the dressing room issues of the direction of the team?

Murray Shines As Kings Finish Off Spurs In San Antonio 140-113; Sabonis, Fox, and Monk all score 22 each

Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (11) gets fired up against the San Antonio Spurs in the first half at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Fri Dec 6, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Sacramento Kings (11-13) took on the San Antonio Spurs (11-11) winning the game 140-113 and evening the score after the team had lost to the Spurs last Sunday. The starters had a tremendous effort and Keegan Murray finished the game with 17 points and three rebounds.

It is only one game but Murray has certainly taken a step in the right direction. Sabonis had another double double with 22 points and 16 rebounds. The three musketeers Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk all scored 22 points each.

Game recap: The Spurs got a great start leading 28-19 with three minutes left in the first 12 minutes of play. After a King’s timeout, Sacramento went to work to tie up this game at 33 and we had ourselves a ball game. The Kings made up the deficit in record time and were looking to keep it up going into the second quarter.

The Kings took a 37-33 lead in the opening minute of the second quarter but it dissolved as the Spurs took back the lead. Three minutes into the quarter the score was tied at 40 and this game had all the signs of a real battle as the lead see-sawed back and forth.

The quarter got even more interesting when the Spurs Zach Collins was ejected from the game with a personal foul. With the Spurs down two players, Wembanyama who was out with lower back soreness and then Collins with the ejection Sacramento went on to take a 48-40 lead spurred by a Keon Ellis shot from downtown.

Four King bench players were getting in on the action and had 14 points through 1 1/2 quarters. Sacramento outscored the Spurs in the second quarter 36-26 and led at the half 69-59. The Kings protected the ball well in the first half coming away with six turnovers and were shooting well in the field at 56%. Sabonis was on the edge of another double double with nine rebounds and 13 points. DeMar DeRozan and Malik Monk also had double digits in the first half. They would need to play with the same energy in the second half and would be looking to extend their lead.

The Kings did indeed take the momentum from the first half into the third quarter. After three Sacramento had extended their halftime lead to 110-86. Every starter had double digits, Sabonis had his double double and the best of all, Keegan Murray had 12 points.

Sacramento would have to tighten up to finish off the Spurs in the fourth quarter. The Kings only had six turnovers through three quarters which was another plus that could help lead them to a win over San Antonio.

The Kings had a tremendous start in the fourth quarter and held a 20 point lead at 9:23 111-91. Kevin Huerter had been spotless from downtown going 4 of 4. As the clock wore down on the game Sacramento had taken a 130-109 lead. Every starter for the Kings was having a banner game and Sacramento had evened the score after the loss to the Spurs last Sunday 140-113.

Sacramento got some great offense from the King’s starters every one of them shooting double digits. DeRozan had the high for the team with 23 points. Sabonis, Fox and Monk each had 22 points.

Murray broke out of his funk scoring 17 points with six rebounds. It is only one game but it is sure a step in the right direction for Murray. The team only had 11 turnovers and shot 56% from the field. It was a badly needed win for Sacramento. Huerter was perfect from downtown hitting four shots and finished with 16 points off the bench.

Game notes: Western Conference battle last Tuesday evening, the Kings went onto lose to the Memphis Grizzlies 115-110 Thursday night and so it was back to the drawing board. The Kings were struggling dropping seven of their last ten games but managed a big win in San Antonio Friday night.

Something was going terribly wrong with this team but they seemed to have shaken it off on Friday with that outpouring of scoring. The talent on the team is undeniable as they got some answers against the Spurs.

Friday night they played in San Antonio taking on a team that beat them last Sunday 127-125 and got a little payback. They were riding a rocky road before Friday’s game. Along for the ride is Murray who had also struggled but scored 17 points against the Spurs.

Murray has fought through his miserable streak. The Kings had hoped that Murray was potentially a breakout player in this 2024-25 season. Murray had gone five straight games without a free throw in fact he has not gotten to the line in 11 of his last 12 games previous to Friday.

When the Kings signed DeRozan the thought was that DeRozan’s presence would open up some great looks for Murray. At age 24, Murray has gotten looks but his accuracy was not been very good but Friday he finished third in scoring.

Last season Murray had a 15 points per game average which is hardly the case this year he hopes after this game Friday he might have corrected that. He has been on a roll defensively and there is the hope and he was able to play some catch up Friday.

The Kings now return home to Sacramento to take on the Utah Jazz Sunday evening looking to start a string of wins; something they have not seen for awhile now. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

#2 The Grizzlies Desmond Bane contributed with 18 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Santi Aldama each scored 15 points. Aldama also added 10 rebounds.

#3 DeMar DeRozan led the Kings in scoring with 26 points while Malik Monk had 23 points, DeAaron Fox had 18 and Domantas Sabonis had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

#4 Jeremiah anytime you have 20 lead changes and lose it has to be frustrating for the Kings after they had put together a big win against the Rockets on Tuesday night in Houston.

#5 The Kings head to San Antonio where they tip off with the Spurs Friday night. The Spurs have lost their last two games and are 8-5 at home. The Kings hope to recoup for their loss against Memphis.

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Spurs Wembanyama’s triple double helps do in Kings 127-125

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) takes a shot against the Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk (0) and forward Domantas Sabonis (11) in second half action at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Sun Dec 1, 2024

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Sunday night. They were coming off their most recent game, a blowout loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. It was a real gut-check loss for the Kings, who fell further below the .500 mark. On Sunday night, the Kings welcomed the San Antonio Spurs to Golden 1 Center, with tip-off set for 6 PM PST. The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Sacramento Kings 127-125 as the Kings fell to 9-12 on the season.

Mike Brown made a pre-game change to the starting lineup, electing to go with Malik Monk. It was the first time Monk had started a game during his time in Sacramento.

In the first quarter, the Malik Monk spark appeared to pay off. The Kings exploded for a 42-point quarter, while the Spurs managed only 28 points. It was a breath of fresh air for a Kings offense that had struggled to score recently. However, their perimeter defense continued to be a concern.

In the second quarter, the Kings’ performance dipped. They became sloppier with the ball, committing four turnovers. The offense managed just 23 points, while the Spurs put up 30. All in all, it was still a decent quarter for the Kings, who aimed to maintain their solid shooting in the second half. At halftime, the Kings led the Spurs 65-58. DeMar DeRozan led the Kings with 18 points in the first half, while Victor Wembanyama paced the Spurs with 16 points.

In the third quarter, the Kings struggled to find their rhythm against the Spurs. They managed to hold on to a five-point lead but were clearly losing the sharp edge they’d built early in the game. The Spurs outscored the Kings 34-32 in the quarter, narrowing the gap. Heading into the final quarter, the Kings led 97-92.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings surrendered their lead. With the game tied at 111 and 4:50 remaining, the Kings desperately needed a win. For the rest of the quarter, the Kings fought hard but ultimately came up short. They were outscored 35-28 in the fourth quarter, losing to the Spurs 127-125. Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs to victory with 34 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists. DeMar DeRozan led the Kings in defeat with 28 points.

Postgame, Malik Monk spoke about what is holding the Kings back. Malik said, “It’s attention to detail… we have to be better on the little things… we will figure it out.” Mike Brown echoed similar sentiments when he addressed the media. He appeared pleased with the addition of Malik Monk to the starting lineup and noted that it would continue for the foreseeable future.

Up Next: The Sacramento Kings will remain at home to face the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night. The Rockets enter the game with a 14-6 record, sitting in second place in the Western Conference.

Kings Flat Against Portland Losing 115-106

Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons (1) dribbles on Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray (13) in second half action at the Rose Quarter in Portland on Fri Nov 29, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Sacramento Kings (9-11) suffered a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers (8-12) 115-106 in Portland. It was a really off night for Keegan Murray who came away with three points scored in the final minutes of the game.

Missed shots, 20 turnovers, and no success rebounding offensively led to the terrible showing. DeMar DeRozan was not in the lineup tonight with back issues and it was an off night for the Kings with not much going right. Malik Monk finished with the team high of 29, De’Aaron Fox with 22 and Domantis Sabonis with 21. Sabonis did have another double double with 12 rebounds.

Game recap: The Kings took a slim lead for the first half of the opening quarter. At 3:54 the Blazers took their first lead of the game prompting a Sacramento timeout. The Kings took back the lead 24-18 with under three minutes in the quarter. Domantas Sabonis already had 14 points with under two minutes left in the first 12 minutes of play. As the first quarter came to an end the Kings had established a 30-25 lead.

The Trail Blazers continued to trail but not by much; they remained within striking distance through the first four minutes of the second quarter. With 8:48 left in the quarter the Kings took another timeout hanging onto a 35-33 lead.

Portland was hanging tough and refused to go away. With six minutes left in the half the score was tied at 39. Sacramento already had 11 turnovers and the Trail Blazers went on a run taking a 49-41 lead winning the battle in the paint.

They had a 54-50 lead going into the second half. The Kings had 14 turnovers in the first half and the Trail Blazers were limiting the Kings offensive rebounds.

Sacramento continued to fall further and further behind and with 8:10 left in the third quarter were trailing 55-68 and another Kings timeout. This game was turning into a blowout, the turnovers continued and the Trail Blazers continued to win the battle under the glass.

After three, Portland continued to dictate the pace of the game leading 87-72. Murray remained scoreless, Kevin Huerter came out of the game with injury and the Kings had dug a hole that continued to grow deeper and deeper trailing 72-87.

Going into the fourth quarter nothing much indicated an upswing for Sacramento. They were on the edge of 20 turnovers with 19. Portland had a death grip on their lead and they were not letting go.

The Kings did finish with 20 turnovers and they were pretty flat all night. The Trail Blazers really got the game in their direction in the third quarter outscoring the Kings 33-22 putting this game pretty much on ice. The final score was 115-106.

Game notes: Friday night the Kings took a little trip up north to take on theTrail Blazers at Moda Center. The Kings will again be without DeMar DeRozan who was ruled out for Friday night’s game. Two weeks ago DeRozan missed three consecutive games with lower back soreness and after a three-game return he was sidelined again.

While the Kings missed DeRozan, they did have Malik Monk back on the bench so Sacramento does have the fire-power as Monk scored 29 points. Sacramento’s Keon Ellis was on starting roster in the absence of DeRozan. Ellis scored six points on Friday night.

Sunday evening the Kings will take on the San Antonio Spurs At Golden 1 looking to put out a much improved effort. Hopefully DeMar DeRozan, who is listed to return Sunday, will indeed be able to take the court. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Kings Get Whitewashed By Spurs 116-96; San Antonio’s Wembanyama’s 34 points leads the way

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) is defended by the Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (right) at Frost Bank in San Antonio on Mon Nov 11, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings (6-4) came out in the first quarter with great energy winning the first 12 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs (4-6) 26-22. That was about all they could muster losing the game 116-96. The Spurs won all of the remaining quarters in the game.

The overtime win yesterday over the Suns weighed on the team. They had lost their sixth man Malik Monk to injury in that game and they will happily hop a plane and head home to Sacramento for a four game home-stand which begins on Wednesday.

Game recap: The answer came early for Sacramento. They took a first quarter lead 26-22. They continued to push that lead in the second quarter taking a 33-27 lead to open the second 12 minutes.

The Spurs continued to push the issue pulling to within one point 33-32 after having trailed by nine points earlier in the quarter. At 7:36 the Spurs took the lead 37-36. Sacramento took back to lead but by the slimmest of margins and this game went back and forth. San Antonio’s superstar Victor Wembanyama had scored 13 points in 13 minutes. Sacramento would have pull out all the stops dismiss their fatigue and fight for this one.

At the half, the Spurs led 60-55 after trailing by nine points. Had fatigue caught up with the Kings? We would find out in the second half of play.

In the third quarter, the Kings just plain ran out of steam. They were missing shot after shot and after three the Spurs had a 84-71 lead. Sacramento typically has had some very productive fourth quarters and they would need to step up both their offense and defense if they would have any chance in this game.

The Spurs continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter leaving the Kings in the dust. With 10:13 left in the game the Kings trailed by the score of 75-87. Victor Wembanyaama had already hit 25 points with 12 rebounds.

Kevin Huerter had not hit a single three and with 8:19 left in the game the Spurs had a 95-78 lead. Huerter had only scored two points, and Keegan Murray had hit five points. Sacramento had a lot of ground to make up and they had to get within striking distance in the final three minutes of this game.

It just didn’t happen. The Kings fell further and further behind and with less than a minute left in the game trailed 116-96. That would be the final and Sacramento had suffered a 20 point loss.

The Kings protected the ball well in this game with only 11 turnovers but the missed shots weighed heavy on the outcome of the game. Sacramento hit 10 threes but the Spurs were on fire scoring 22 shots from outside and the Kings couldn’t manage Victor Wembanyama.

He hit six shots from downtown, had 14 rebounds and finished the game with 34 points. The Kings Kevin Huerter finished the game with a disappointing two points and Keegan Murray was equally disappointing with five points. The team will be happy to put this game behind them as they head home for a four-game home-stand. It was close to being one of their worst games this season.

Game recap: Monday night the Kings took on the Spurs (4-6) at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs are on a downward trend losing three of their past five games. Saturday night their Head Coach Greg Popovich became seriously ill and missed the game and will not be on the bench for this game.

This has been a blow for the team attributing to part of their decline. The Kings suffered a loss of their own Sunday night in Phoenix losing Malik Monk to a right ankle sprain. There is so far no indication as to the seriousness of the injury nor a timeline for his return.

The Kings really need their sixth man since their bench has been a bit lackluster although Keon Ellis has been a defensive powerhouse. The Kings came into this game after beating the Phoenix Sun handing them their second loss of the year 127-118 on Sunday. It was an epic battle and the question remains; how much gas do these guys have left in the tank.

Tuesday will be a travel day for the team. They will be grateful to get some much needed rest on Tuesday before taking on the Phoenix Suns Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 PM. In the coming days the Kings will be watching for some update on the extent and possible return date of Malik Monk.
