Stanford Cardinal podcast Michael Roberson:

#1 Stanford Cardinal (3-6) head coach Frank Reich has benched first string quarterback Ben Gulbranson after having the Cardinal have lost their last four games and replaced him with second stringer Elijah Brown who came in for Gulbranson in the Cardinal’s last game against the Pitt Panthers (7-2) last Sat Nov 1st as Pitt came away with a 35-20.

#2 The Cardinal are last of the 17 teams in the ACC in points per game with 17.8 and rank 16th in yards per game with at 307.1.

#3 Coach Reich mentioned that this was a tough decision and that Gulbranson had done some good things and that he doesn’t put all of the blame on Gulbranson but he said a change had to be made and this was the best decision for the team.

#4 Reich mentioned that Gulbranson has thrown ten interceptions and had completed only 56.9% of his passes for 1813 yards. Reich is looking for improvement in those numbers and hopes to get it from Brown.

#5 The Cardinal are at UNC to face head coach Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels. UNC snapped a four game losing streak with a win against the Syracuse Orange last Saturday 27-10. This one is one the road can Brown deliver against UNC this Saturday?

#2 How important will running back Tuna Altahir be to Stanford’s game plan against the Panthers, and how can the Cardinal’s offensive line help him establish the ground game?

#3 On the defensive side, can Stanford linebacker Hunter Barth help limit big plays by Pittsburgh, especially in the passing game or on screen passes?

#4 Stanford wide receiver Jonanthony Hall is one of the younger playmakers for Stanford — how much of a factor could he be in upsetting Pittsburgh’s secondary?

#5 Finally, how is the Cardinal offensive line—anchored by senior tackle Jack Leyrer—expected to hold up against Pittsburgh’s blitzes and pass rushes?

Traveling across the country proved to be difficult for the Stanford Cardinal in the championship game of the Progressive Legends Classic.

Lamar Patterson scored 24 points, as the Pittsburgh Panthers never trailed in their two games and won the championship in a 88-67 victory over the Cardinal at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Jamie Dixon’s team also got help from Durand Johnson and Talib Zanna each scored 14 for the Panthers, who improve to 6-0 on the season.

Dwight Powell led the Cardinal with 20 points, while Anthony Brown scored 16 and Chasson Randle added 10, but the Cardinal fell to 5-2 on the season.

Despite Powell grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, the Panthers out rebounded the Cardinal 34-30 and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, while the Cardinal pulled down eight offensive boards.

The Cardinal cut the Panthers lead down to 11, but the Panthers got a big three and a free throw for a four-point play to put the Panthers up by 15 and they never looked back.
