On the NHL podcast with Matt:

#1 The Vancouver Canucks, who face the San Jose Sharks tonight at SAP Center, had won five straight, but snapped their streak by a goal 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. The Sharks, on the other hand, are a struggling bunch who have four straight, but are back on home ice. Matt tells us how he sees this matchup.

#2 Speaking of streaks, the New York Islanders topped the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Isles’ eighth straight win 5-3. The Isles got goals from Matthew Barzal (6), Ryan Pulock (2), Josh Baily (5), Anders Lee (5), Derrick Brassard (4).

#3 The Philadelphia Flyers got by the New Jersey Devils 4-3. The Flyers got scoring from Oskar Lindblom (7), Sean Couturier (3), Joel Farabee (11). Flyers won in a shootout.

#4 The Washington Caps won by a convincing five goals 6-1. The Caps scored four times in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres in a period that pretty much established the game. The Caps’ Jakub Vrana scored twice in the first period.

#5 The Carolina Hurricanes got four goals in the second period that pretty much put a lock on the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-3 win. In that second period, the Canes got goals from Sebastian Aho, who scored twice; Nino Niederreiter; and Martin Necas.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh & Len Shapiro: Sharks’ Jumbo Joe at 40, but wants to stay in San Jose, willing to re-up

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 Joe Thornton plans to resign with the Sharks for the 2019-20 season he’s almost 40 had some injuries in past season can you see him entering September and keeping up with the younger players?

#2 Thornton’s plans are to stay with San Jose and he hopes to keep this up for at least five more years if he could he stay healthy.

#3 Thornton has had knee injuries he tore his ALC and MLC in his left knee in 2017 and last season tore his MCL in his right knee in 2018. Thornton in confident he’s back and there are no issues going into next season.

#4 The Philadelphia Flyers will absorb the $3.8 million that former San Jose Shark defenseman Justin Braun had remaining on his contract. Braun was dealt for draft picks Mary talks about how Braun will fit into the Flyers system.

#5 The biggest move was on Tuesday when the Sharks signed Erik Karlsson for a $92 million eight year deal. Karlsson after the post season was expected to go shopping for a team most likely the Ottawa Senators his former team. The Sharks were determined to keep him and got him to the table for a long term deal.

#1 The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Phil Kessel scored his 24th goal of the season. Brian DuMoulin, Patric Hornqvist, Nick Bjugstad (11), Jake Guentzel (36), all scored in the Pens’ win over the Buffalo Sabres 5-0.

#2 The New York Islanders got a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens as the Isles’ Adam Pelech (5) and Anders Lee (25) scored for New York.

#3 The Washington Capitals’ Brett Connolly scored two goals–#18 and #19–to help lead the Caps in a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

#4 The Ottawa Senators got a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Blues. The Sens got goals from Christian Wolanin (4) and Chris Tierney (9). Jake Allen started in goal for the shutout for Senators.

#5 The red-hot Tampa Bay Lighting (54-13-4) defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The Bolts’ Nikita Kucherov scored twice for #34 and #35 of the season.

#1 The Boston Bruins (20-12-4) took care of business with a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators (22-13-2), First period goal from the Bruins Patrice Bergeron (10) and a third period goal–number 11 for the season.

#2 Columbus Blue Jackets (20-12-3) got a 4-3 win past the Philadelphia Flyers (14-16-4) Zach Werenski gets his sixth goal and Cam Atkinson gets his 21st and 22nd in the one-goal win for the CBJs.

#3 Florida Panthers (14-14-6) get a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings (15-17-5). The Panthers got a first period goal from Mike Hoffman (16) at 3:09 and Evgenii Dadonov (17) at 17:21.

#4 The Montreal Canadiens (19-13-5) got a 4-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights (20-15-3). For the Habs’ Phillip Danault got goals three, four and five for a hat trick.

#5  The last place Los Angeles Kings (13-20-2) picked up an overtime win over the San Jose Sharks (19-12-6). For the Sharks, it was their second straight loss after winning five straight. The Kings’ IIya Kovalchuk scored his seventh goal for the overtime winner.

#1 The Arizona Coyotes’ Derek Stepan, the former New York Ranger, got a chance at revenge and defeated his old team in overtime with a goal at 4:28 to help the Yotes snap out of a four-game losing streak at Madison Square Garden. The Coyotes were behind 3-0 at one time, but scored four unanswered goals for the comeback.

#2 The Oilers’ Conner McDavid is one you could count on scoring two goals and an assist and teammate Leon Draisaitl had three assists as the Oilers got a three-goal win over the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1.

#3 The Winnipeg Jets’ Mark Scheifele with 50 seconds into the overtime scored the game-winning goal to edge the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3. Scheifele scored two goals in the game for the Jets fourth win in a row and the Hawks have now lost nine of their last ten games.

#4 The Ottawa Senators got offensive help to get by the Detroit Red Wings 4-2. The Sens’ Mark Stone scored a third period goal, Chris Tierney added a goal on a empty-netter.

#5 In overtime, New Jersey’s Nico Hischier got the game-winner after 41 seconds. New Jersey came back from three goals down to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-3.
