NHL podcast with Len Shapiro: Canucks are a playoff team says prez; Bruins Marchand takes captaincy; plus more news

On the NHL podcast with Len:

#1 The Vancouver Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said that this is a playoff bound team but Rutherford feels not all the pieces are in place yet. Rutherford said to be a playoff team everything has to go right, the goaltending, special teams, and you can’t get a lot of injuries.

#2 Brad Marchand forward for the Boston Bruins has taken over as team captain, Marchand said that he’s proud to wear the C for the Bruins. Marchand takes over the captaincy for Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. Bergeron retired on July 25th and Chara was team captain from 2014-2020.

#3 Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele had 31 game season and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck are trying to focus on the coming 2023-24 season. Hellebuyck in his ninth season with the Jets this is the last year of his contract. Also Scheifele after this season becomes a unrestricted free agent. How important is it for the Jets to sign these two players?

#4 The Toronto Maple Leafs William Nylander has moved from right wing to center opening training camp on Thursday. Nylander according to Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is a high priority signing. Nylander is in the final season of his six year $41.4 million contract averaging $6.9 million a season.

#5 San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture is listed week to week with a lower body injury. Couture will miss the start of training camp and no doubt he’ll have to sit out some of the pre season games which starts Sep 24th. Couture was injured while training in the off season saying it frustrating and he’ll miss playing with the guys.

On the NHL podcast with Marko:

#1 Marko one of the key Winnipeg Jets Josh Morrissey will be out for the remainder of the playoffs due to an lower body injury. The Jets who trail the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 in the Jets 5-4 double overtime loss to the Knights on Saturday night saw Morrisey suffer the injury at 1:43 of the first period. Marko talk about how Morrissey’s absence will impact the Jets.

#2 The Boston Bruins defenseman David Krejci sat out for game 4 against the Florida Panthers on Sunday afternoon. Krejci was a late scratch Sunday after taking in the morning skate and the pre game warm ups. Krejci has only one assist in the first two games of the playoffs. Also the Bruins are missing center Patrice Bergeron who did not travel with the Bruins to Florida. Bergeron is likely to return on Wednesday for game 5.

#3 The New Jersey Devils came away with a 2-1 one goal overtime win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. The Devils Dougie Hamilton scored at 11:36 in the overtime stanza for the game winner. Despite the win for New Jersey they still trail the Rangers by a game 2-1 in the series. New Jersey and New York battle again for game 4 tonight at MSG.

#4 Los Angeles Kings left wing Kevin Fiala is a possible return against the Edmonton Oilers tonight in Los Angeles. Fiala looks forward to getting in the game as he has not played since Apr 1 due to a lower body injury. Fiala did practice with the Kings wearing a non contact jersey. Fiala suffered the injury back on Mar 9th when he got into knee on knee hit with the Colorado Avalanche’s center Andrew Congliano, the Oilers came away a 5-2 winner in that game.

#5 Marko, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Sam Lafferty was fined the NHL maximum $3,108.11 according the collective bargaining agreement for cross checking the Tampa Bay Lightning’s forward Ross Colton in game 3 on Saturday. Lafferty checked Colton at 15:10 in the second period. The Maple Leafs edged the Lightning in overtime 4-3 to take a 2-1 series lead.

On the NHL podcast with Marko:

#1 Just an amazing year for the Seattle Kraken (46-28-8) their second year in the league and they make post season. The Kraken open up a best of seven series against the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night in Denver. The Kraken have some scorers Jared McCann 40 goals, Matty Beniers 24 goals, and Daniel Sprong 21 goals.

#2 Marko, talk about the Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron who might miss the first playoff game against the Florida Panthers tonight due to an upper body injury. The Bruins set the record for the most wins in NHL history with 65.

#3 The Colorado Avalanche Cale Makar and Josh Manson are expected to be in the line up against the Seattle Kraken Tuesday night in Denver. Makar didn’t skate on Sunday and has missed the last seven games of the season. Manson has missed the last 23 games of the season for the Avalanche.

#4 Minnesota Wild defenceman John Klingberg is in question for tonight’s game 1 against the Dallas Stars. Klingberg is suffering from a lower body injury in practice he sustained on Saturday. Wild head coach Dean Evason said that Klingberg had issues during practice. Klingberg looks like he’ll be a game time decision.

#5 Winnipeg Jets defenseman Nikolaj Ehlers skated on his own but did not practice with the team because of an upper body injury. Ehlers is also questionable for tonight’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Jets head coach Rick Bowness says that Ehlers is day to day and is being watched carefully during his skates.

Sharks Fall 3-1 to Bruins

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks fell 3-1 to the visiting Boston Bruins Saturday night. The Bruins got two goals from Brad Marchand and one from Patrice Bergeron. Jeremy Swayman made 15 saves for the win. Timo Meier scored for San Jose and James Reimer made 34 saves in the loss.

The Sharks have not beaten the Bruins since 2016, and this year’s Boston team is clearly a contender. So the loss was not surprising. But it did highlight some ongoing issues for the Sharks. The Sharks had just 16 shots on goal in the game, a low for the season. Their power play, however, continues to produce at a good clip, with nine goals in their last nine games. But their inability to score first is looming large. They have given up the first goal in eight games in a row.

Defenseman Mario Ferraro had to be helped off the ice midway through the second period. The Sharks have used eleven defensemen this season. Nicolas Meloche is also out with injury now, and Erik Karlsson is still recovering from surgery.

Also in the troublesome injury category is the fact that James Reimer played his tenth game in a row Saturday, and may play his eleventh tomorrow. It would not be unreasonable to expect to see Zach Sawchenko in net Sunday, if Adin Hill is still not recovered from his injury. If ever there were a good reason to put an untested goalie in net, ten starts in a row would be it.

Brad Marchand gave the Bruins a lead at 14:24 of the first period. Jake Debrusk carried the puck in with Marchand two-on-one. Debrusk made the pass and Marchand put it past Mario Ferraro and Reimer for his 22nd of the season. Assists went to Debrusk and Erik Haula.

The Sharks tied it up at 12:50 of the second with a power play goal from Timo Meier. Brent Burns, midway up the slot, faked a shot before making a mass to Meier in the face-off circle. Meier’s one-timer beat Swayman on the glove side. Assists went to Burns and Logan Couture.

Early in the third period, Brad Marchand scored his second of the night to make it 2-1 Bruins. Taylor Hall made a backwards pass from the goal line to the left of the net across to the circle on the right side of the net. That is where the pass found Marchand for the game-winning shot. Assists went to Hall and Craig Smith.

Patrice Bergeron added another for the Bruins with just 40 seconds left in the game. David Pastrnak skated in as if to shoot, but then centered the puck for Bergeron. Bergeron put it past Couture and Reimer both for his 14th of the season. Assists went to Pastrnak and Marchand.

The Sharks next play on Sunday at 7:00 PM PT, in San Jose against the Seattle Kraken.

NHL Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals podcast with Matt Harrington: Bruins with 1-0 series lead, host Hurricanes for Game 2 Sunday night

On the NHL Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals:

#1 Six games in the second round of the playoffs, the Boston Bruins won four of out those six games to defeat the  Columbus Blue Jackets. Was this a series that the Bruins from the start an indicator that they would win?

#2 The third round began on Thursday night with the Bruins taking Game 1 of the series against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 5-3. The Bruins scored early and held the lead. Does scoring early for the B’s often means big problems to their opponents?

#3 The Bruins got two power plays within 28 seconds. Marcus Johansson and Patrice Bergeron scored power play goals.

#4 Bruins forward Charlie Wagner, who contributed with a goal himself, said that the power plays no doubt have made the difference in the B’s Game 1 win by two goals.

#5 Boston’s famous sports bar and grill near TD Waterhouse Garden named Hurricanes had to think of a way to fix their name as the Bruins were facing off against the Hurricanes. The bar cleverly came up with a banner that read “Beat the” over the Hurricanes sign above the restaurant awning.

NHL Stanley Cup Conference Finals podcast with Joe Lami: Sharks’ DeBoer didn’t underestimate Avs; Bruins getting it done on the power play

On the NHL Stanley Cup Conference Finals with Joe Lami:

San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer, after things settled down after the Sharks’ Game 7 victory on Wednesday night against the Colorado Avalanche, said the Avalanche were a team that handled a tough Calgary Flames team and got through them in the first round and it gave him some concern having to face Colorado.

While it gave DeBoer pause, he said he was proud of the job that the Sharks did in taking the second round against the Avalanche. Winning the second series without team captain Joe Pavelski, how both Brent Burns and Erki Karlsson both contributed with strong offensive performances. Burns and teammate Tomas Hertl combined with nine goals and 14 points.

The Boston Bruins held it together on Thursday night in Game 1 of the third round with a three goal win 5-3 over the Carolina Hurricanes, mostly because of the power play. The Bruins’ Marcus Johansson and Patrice Bergeron scored power play goals in 28 seconds. The Boston Bruins forward Charlie Wagner commented on the NHL Network that the Bruins took advantage of the power play, getting that huge 5-4 advantage gets them in their other end and they found their way to the back end of the net.

The Bruins, with their 5-3 win and having a 1-0 series lead, go to Game 2 on Sunday and the Bruins feel good to be on their home ice for this second game. Joe says the Bruins the huge favorite to take this series in five or six games.
