Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Michael Roberson: VanDerveer says moving to ACC was not reason for retirement

#1 Michael, One of the things that Stanford Cardinal head coach Tara VanDerveer pointed out at her last press last Wednesday was she was not retiring because the ACC. Matter of face VanDerveer said that was a motivating factor for her to stay if anything.

#2 The Cardinal are going through big changes from the end of the Pac 12, to the portal transfers, and losing graduating stars Cameron Brink and Hannah Jump and of course dealing with NIL that has taken over the sport.

#3 VanDerveer mentioned that the changes that have arrived has been exhausting for her and it’s become more of a 24 hour job rather than before you would show up in the morning practice and on game days practice and get ready for the game. Now it’s that and constantly off floor basketball decisions but still that wasn’t the reason why she was retiring.

#4 VanDerveer revealed that her real reason for retirement was her mom at 96 years old is someone that she wanted to spend time with, being with her dogs and going water skiing. After awhile VanDerveer realizes as she says “this is not a dress rehearsal, this is your real life” VanDerveer is now 70 years old.

Bears show fight but trounced by Cougars up North in Pullman 85-65

California Golden Bears 65 (10-15 Overall; 6-8 Pac-12)

Washington State Cougars 85 (19-6 Overall; 10-4 Pac-12)

The Bears went up north to Pullman, Washington, and though they put up some fight, they were subdued, as they lost to the Washington State Cougars, 84-65, in the opener of the road trip.

Cal lost a tough one Saturday at home against the UCLA Bruins. The Bears came back from down 14 points to take the lead, but eventually fell in overtime. Tonight, they were going to have to bounce back on the road, and on the turf of the powerful Washington State Cougars.

The game started scoreless for a whole minute and 49 seconds until Jaylon Tyson made a pullup jumper. The Cougars then scored 10 unanswered points to pounce out to an early 10-2 lead.

The Bears then scored eight unanswered points. Rodney Brown Jr. hit a three; Tyson hit a driving layup; and Grant Newell sank a three-ball to tie it at 10-10 with 11:28 to go in the first half.

The game remained tight as the first half went along. Jaylen Wells hit a three to put the Cougars back ahead at 13-10. From there, the Cougars kept the small lead for the next several minutes, but the Bears were able to stay closely behind.

Fardaws Aimaq was fouled and hit two from the line to put Cal within three at 22-19 with 4:22 to go. However, Andrej Jakimovski hit a three, and Myles Rice laid one in to open Washington State’s lead to 27-19.

Jalen Celestine hit a three to make it 27-22 with 2:48 left, but the Cougars closed out the first half with seven unanswered points, and altogether a 12-3 run, to go into the half uo 34-22.

Aimaq slammed one down to start the second half, but the Cougars kept adding. Wells hit a jumper, and Rice hit a three to make it 41-26.

Being down by double digits in the early minutes of the second half was nothing new to the Bears, who have come back from many such deficits this season. There was no reason to believe they couldn’t do so tonight.

The Bears had already come back from a large deficit early in this game. When the Cougars jumped out their 10-2 lead out of the gate, the Bears immediately scored eight unanswered points to tie it up. The Bears had all the confidence in the world that they could come back again.

Keonte Kennedy hit a three, and Tyson dunked one to make it 41-31. The Bears definitely believed they could come back, but the Cougars just would not relent, as they jumped out to a 51-33 lead with 15:17 to go. Brown and Newell then hit threes to make it 53-39, but the Cougars were too powerful, and they put the game away.

The Cougars opened their lead to 20 at 66-46 with 9:51 to go, and it was apparent that the Bears were not going to come back tonight. To Cal’s credit, they didn’t fall much further behind, as they never trailed by more than 23 points.

However, once all was said and done, Washington State comfortably won, 84-65.

Tyson led the scoring with 18 points for the Bears, but there was no stopping Myles Rice, who scored 25 for the Cougars. Isaac Jones wasn’t too far behind Rice, as he scored 21.

The Bears fall to 6-8 in Pac-12 play, and 10-15 overall. Now, they will head across Washington State to Seattle, where they will take on the Washington Huskies at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night.

San Jose State Lose To Oregon State 42-10 In Their Home Opener

San Jose, CA – In CEFCU stadium, the San Jose State Spartans face the Oregon State Beavers and SJSU is coming off a loss last week from USC. Even though the score of that game wasn’t close, it was a big moment for the Spartans to put up four touchdowns on a top 10 ranked team. This game being their first home game of the season in their beautiful revamped facility that would be sure to impress a lot of recruits. A packed house with both Oregon State fans and hometown Spartan fans as we prepared for kickoff.

The first drive for SJSU went the distance, but they were stopped trying to convert on 3rd & 8, but Oregon State had a completely different tune to it. The Beavers went 11 plays and 82 yards for a touchdown to take the first lead of the game plus an extra point, 7-0 Oregon State.

In his second drive SJSU QB Chevan Cordeiro faced pressure from Oregon State’s defense and was rattled as they couldn’t convert on another drive, but they pinned the Beavers with a great punt. The first quarter closed out with Oregon State in the lead 7-0.

SJSU’s opening second quarter drive was way better than anything they strung together in the first with Cordeiro getting yards in the air and on foot, but once they got to the red zone, a penalty and an incompletion caused them to attempt a field goal for their first points of the game and they got it, 7-3. Oregon State’s quarterback DJ Uiagalelei gets his second touchdown, this one in the air with a 14 yard pass play and Oregon State goes up 14-3.

SJSU followed it up with another drive that didn’t result in a touchdown, but another punt and the Beavers received the ball with two minutes left in the first half. In those two minutes, Oregon State scored again on six plays going 60+ yards, which ended the first half with the Beavers up 21-3 on the Spartans. SJSU only converted on one third down in the first half, but the positive for the Spartans was that they had zero turnovers.

The second half started with the Beavers with the ball and it looked like they picked up right where they left off, but even after trying to convert on fourth down, SJSU finally stopped them and took over possession.

Oregon State’s scoring was right back on schedule with six minutes left in the third quarter, when QB Uiagalelei completed a 31 yard pass in the end zone and after the extra point was converted, Oregon State was up 28-3.

The rest of the third quarter was a combination of solid defense and effective offense by SJSU, even utilizing the clock while they were on offense. The third quarter ended with SJSU having the ball in the red zone after stringing together 20 yards with four plays.

The fifth play of that drive was the opening play of the fourth quarter and Chevan Cordeiro ran 2 yards into the end zone making the score, 28-10. The Spartans needed to cool down this Oregon State offense or else this game would be over before the fourth was even halfway done and Oregon State wasn’t going to be stopped.

The Beavers scored again after seven plays and 65 yards with Uiagalelei throwing his third touchdown pass, this one received by Anthony Gould for 28 yards, 35-10 Oregon State. San Jose State found themselves in a terrible spot where on the drive in the fourth quarter that would be the part where they can strike a comeback, but Cordeiro was sacked and then with 6:26 left in the game, the Beavers had the ball, seemingly ending the chance of the Spartans coming back and stealing a win.

Oregon State wasn’t done yet, they scored another touchdown with 3:13 left making the score 42-10, but the cut was deep and the majority of fans left in CEFCU stadium were in black and orange representing Oregon State.

The Spartans didn’t want to end this game without one more touchdown for their own confidence and backup QB Jay Butterfield completed a 19 yard pass to Brandon Alvarez with four seconds left in the game. The final seconds ticked and the horn blew for the end of the game and the Spartans lost 42-17 in their home opener. Chevan Cordeiro went 18/32 for 143 yards, but no passing touchdowns.

The Spartans lose back to back games to PAC-12 teams and start off 0-2. The next game for SJSU will be at home against Cal Poly, September 9th and San Jose State is hoping they can get their first win of the season, especially against a non PAC-12 team.

#1 Bruce, what is your take away regarding all the criticism that 49ers quarterback Trey Lance had been receiving about his performance last Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

#2 Which Giant team will show up, the Giants before last night who lost 10-2 on Monday night or the Giants of last night who got some hitting and used four pitchers to get a 7-0 shutout of the Tampa Bay Rays.

#3 Bruce what do you make of the possibilities of the Baltimore Orioles relocating. It sounds preposterous but Orioles managing partner John Angelos said recently that the Orioles would never leave Baltimore but Orioles are looking for prime downtown property and although they would get $600 million for Camden Yards improvements Angelos whose wife owns a music entertainment company in Nashville makes the idea of moving all the more interesting.

#4 Bruce the Pac 12 reportedly will incur 11 teams from the ACC. It was first mentioned the four remaining Pac 12 teams Cal, Stanford, Washington State, and Oregon State would join the ACC but that has been reversed with the ACC planning to not charge 11 schools exit fees and move to the Pac 12.

At some point it became very clear to everyone it wasn’t every man for himself but it was it was every school for itself. Once every other schools starting leaving the Pac 12 you can’t blame Cal and Stanford for leaving.

The plan isn’t to rebuild the Pac 12 there wasn’t another school to say “hey were here to replace the school that just left” that wasn’t going to happen and the media money that was going to be part of where they were going to go the Pac 12 had to get something done quickly.

So it’s not surprising that they’ve taken this move as I said as a longtime west coast guy of the Pac 10 that was my heart and soul growing up. It kills me because this is part of tradition not just for the schools but for the communities, Berkeley, Palo Alto, this is a long history of their players in and out of town.

#1 Jerry since last week’s Colorado Buffaloes announcement regarding leaving the Pac 12, Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has not made any statements regarding the Buffaloes and also with additional departures from Washington and Oregon.

#2 Washington State Cougars team president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun said that while it’s disappointing that up to five teams are leaving there is always a possible positive outcome that could unfold. They both are hopeful over the Pac 12’s deal proposal with Apple.

#3 Teams remaining after four teams that have left, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, Kliavkoff will have to do some quick work after this season in getting other schools to join the conference.

#4 In terms of how this works for the Cal the school you cover their alumnus and donors have to be concerned that they no longer will get to see the rival teams especially USC and UCLA.

#5 One interesting note is that Oregon and Washington will be entering the Big Ten on a reduced payout while USC and UCLA will get more than $60 million each for media rights. That’s the rewards of being in the second media market.

#6 Jerry you had a chance to cover two Stanford Cardinal appearances in the Rose Bowl how does this break up of the Pac 12 effect the Rose Bowl tradition.

#1 Michael, talk about the big announcement last Thursday regarding the Colorado Buffaloes leaving the Pac 12 this being the third team now to leave with USC and UCLA how will that impact the league.

#2 Now with three teams departing the Pac 12 do you see the Pac 12 getting the opportunity to add some teams or could they end up disbanding?

#3 The Pac 12 ironically has won more championships than any other league but now the league has lots questions about it’s future.

#4 The Pac 12 has problems with their TV contract regarding it’s media rights contract did that play into the three teams departures knowing that they can’t stay profitable.

#1 Taking look at this week’s ESPN Invitational on the Memphis Tigers opened the first half with a slim lead in the opening minutes 4-0 but the Stanford Cardinal wasted not time in catching up and taking the lead mid-way through the first 20 minutes 14-9. The Tigers fought back tying the game at 14 and the teams traded leads for most of the opening half.

#2 At 15:42 in the second half, the Tigers took a double digit lead 31-21. The Cardinal continue to fight back but both Harrison Ingram and Brandon Angel were struggling in this game with three and two point efforts midway through the second half.

#3 Angel had 22 points in the Florida State game and Ingram had 24 against Ole Miss. It was a let-down that Stanford could not afford.

#4 Stanford showed the will to win in the final minutes but every time they got to within striking distance, Memphis answered and refused to let Stanford back into the game. The Cardinal had pulled to within four points at 2:12 50-46. Stanford just didn’t have enough to pull this game out. The final was 56-48.

#1 Daniel looking at the Cal Bears (3-5) winning their last two games is this a vast improvement after losing three in a row?

#2 The Bears were coming off a healthy 26-3 win against the Colorado Buffaloes (2-6) to start the first of two wins and in convincing fashion 26-3 and after losing three in a row Cal hosted the Oregon State Beavers (5-3) and won what most critics have said was a big test going back to Memorial Stadium.

#3 The Beavers coming into Cal last Sat Oct 30th had won five of their last six games and had defeated some of the Pac 12’s most challenging teams like the Utah Utes (5-3 and first place) and USC (4-4) for Cal to defeat them 39-25 had to be the Bears biggest win of the season so far.

#4 Daniel, talk about Cal quarterback Chase Garbers he had a big day last week against the Beavers throwing 17-26 for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The point that he didn’t have any interceptions says the O line was giving him lots of time to throw three touchdowns.

#5 This Sat Nov 6 in Tucson the Cal Bears take on the Arizona Wildcats (0-8) a 12 noon kick off Daniel your in Arizona right now. The Wildcats have not won a single game this year and are starting to feel the pressure. The defense simply could not hold USC in their last game and Wildcats quarterback Will Plummer was 20-34 for 264 yards, no touchdowns and no picks. How do you see this match up this Saturday.

#1 Daniel, in the last two games the Cal Bears (1-4) have convincingly been defeated Sep 25 in Seattle by the Washington Huskies (2-3) 31-24 and Oct 2 by the Washington State Cougars (3-3) 21-6. How much would you allude the loses to a break down in the Cal defense.

#2 In the last game against the Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 25-41, 219 yards, three touchdowns, and was intercepted twice.

#3 The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and Cal could only answer with six points in the first quarter for all their scoring for the night.

#4 Cal quarterback Chase Garbers just couldn’t get anything going on offense going 14-30, 152 yards, and no touchdowns as Cal was shutout in the second, third and fourth quarters.

#5 The Oregon Ducks (4-1) are next for Cal this Sat Oct 16th. The Ducks lost their last game to the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 at Stanford Stadium. The Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown was 14-26, 186 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.
