#1 The San Jose Sharks (4-0-0) it seems like no one can get in their way as they picked up their fourth straight win this time over the Toronto Maple Leafs (2-2-1) 5-3 at Scotiabank in Toronto on Friday night.

#2 The Sharks drew first blood in the second period scoring twice and three times in the third period that speaks to their offense and they made work of Leafs goalie Michael Hutchinson who faced 30 shots stopping 26.

#3 Timo Meier, Erik Karlsson and Jonathan Dahlen all scored a goal each and two from Logan Couture. Talk about the goal contribution the Sharks have been getting from those four on Friday night in Toronto.

#4 Looking back on the Sharks game in Ottawa the Sharks Erik Karlsson a former Senator let one slip on the air while being interviewed by TSN’s Gord Miller the former Senator Karlsson was congratulated by Miller for picking up his first point against the Senators and said “that don’t mean s-word.” Karlsson said they haven’t got the points yet when he was interviewed with 20 minutes left but said it was nice to be back.

#5 The Sharks are in Boston (2-1-0) for their next game on this five game road trip the fourth of the five. The Bruins always a tough customer took it to the Buffalo Sabers (3-1-1) 4-1 on Friday night in Buffalo. Getting got defensive help from goaltender Linus Ullmark stopping 35 out of 36 shots.

Sharks Beat Senators 2-1; SJ improves record to 3-0

The San Jose Sharks won their third in a row, winning 2-1 against the Senators in Ottawa. Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc scored for San Jose, and James Reimer made 30 saves for the win. Drake Batherson scored for Ottawa and Matt Murray made 22 saves in the loss. For Sharks defenseman Brent Burns, Thursday’s contest was his 600th consecutive game. He earned an assist and skated for 25:56.

Sharks Captain Logan Couture said that the key to this win was work:

“We didn’t have our best legs tonight. We didn’t have our best, we turned too many pucks over throughout that game. [Reimer] made some big saves, especially early in that third, but we just worked. Blocked shots at the ends, Reims stepped up huge, stuck together as a team.”

Sharks defenseman and ex-Senator, Erik Karlsson, said:

“This was a great win for us. I don’t think that we played good at all. This was our sloppy game. I feel like you could tell that they had a little bit more energy, they got a little bit more bounces, they were a little bit hungrier. But we thought we might win, that’s the most important thing.”

The Senators’ Drake Batherson scored the only first period goal, at 10:06. A Sharks three-on-two turned into a Senators two-on-one as Sharks scrambled to get back. Batherson opted to shoot instead of passing to Josh Norris and squeezed the puck under Reimer’s arm for his first of the season. Assists went to Brady Tkachuk and Artem Zub.

Midway through the period, the teams took almost simultaneous penalties and played most of two minutes four-on-four. During that time, Kevin Labanc put the puck in the net but the Senators challenged it for off-side and got it called back. Both Brent Burns and Nick Bonino had their skates in the zone before the puck crossed the line. While Burns was legal, since he had control of the puck, that exception did not extend to Bonino.

The Senators were short one forward as Shane Pinto sustained a shoulder injury during his first shift of the first period. He attempted to return for the second but left again after just one shift.

Shots were almost even at 8-7 Senators for the first period. Face-offs were also close, with the Sharks holding a slight edge at 58%. Both teams took penalties in the final minute of the period, so that the Senators had part of a power play to start the second period.

The Sharks killed that penalty off and tied the game with a goal from Logan Couture at 1:58. Brent Burns’ pass from the point found Couture right above the blue paint. Couture tapped the puck into an open net, as Murray was on the wrong side of the crease. Burns and Timo Meier got assists.

Kevin Labanc got his goal back on the power play at 14:36, giving the Sharks a 2-1 lead. Erik Karlsson sent the puck to Labanc at the top of the face-off circle for a quick shot through traffic. Jasper Weatherby created a good screen in front of the goaltender. Assists went to Karlsson and William Eklund.

Shots were even closer in the second, 13-12 Senators. Ottawa took two penalties in the second period, and the Sharks power play tallied four shots. The Senators power play had two shots. The Senators bounced back in the face-off circle, winning 71% of the draws.

In the third period, the Sharks rebounded in the face-off circle, winning 60% of the draws. The shots were very uneven in the final frame, at 11-4 Senators. The Sharks penalty kill gave up just one shot.

The Sharks next play on Friday in Toronto against the Maple Leafs at 3:00 PM PT.

#2 In what is partly shocking but also one of the good wishes Montreal goaltender Carey Price has entered an assistance program. Carey was working out for his post knee surgery and had to recover from a non Covid 19 illness. Prices wife Angela said putting Price’s mental health comes first.

#3 Ottawa Senators 27 year old forward Brady Tkachuk remains an unrestricted free agent and will not make it to the Senators opening day roster which starts Oct 14, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said Tkachuk was expected to be signed by Sep 22.

#4 The Los Angeles Kings center Quinton Byfield is on the injured reserve list since Wednesday due to a fractured left ankle. Byfield 19, left early in the third period on Tuesday after getting hit by the Arizona Coyotes Christian Fischer. Kings head coach Todd McLellan said Byfield was in good spirits and he was around the rink and the guys which was good.

#1 Matt, let’s take a look at some of today’s action in the NHL the Calgary Flames (10-10-2) are getting some offense as Mikael Backlund, Andrew Mangiapane,  Matt Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan, and Juuso Valimaki scored a goal each in their 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators (7-15-1) at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

#2 The Philadelphia Flyers (10-4-3) goaltender Brian Elliott threw a shutout today against the Buffalo Sabers (6-9-3). Elliott stopped 23 Philadelphia shots for the shutout. You know about goaltending Matt talk about Elliott’s stops between the pipes today in Buffalo.

#3 The Flyers got some scoring help from Sean Couturier, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Scott Laughton each scored a goal a piece for the 3-0 win.

#4 The New Jersey Devils (7-7-2) may have shutdown the Washington Capitals (11-5-4) Alexander Ovechkin from scoring any goals on Saturday but they couldn’t stop the Caps offense from scoring five goals from Nic Dowd, Lars Eller, Garnet Hathaway, Daniel Sprong, and Jakub Vrana for the 5-2 win.

#5  In goal for the Capitals was Vitek Vanecek who stopped 22 out of 24 shots against the Devils on Saturday afternoon.

#1 The Philadelphia Flyers who were coming off two wins took a tough loss to the Buffalo Sabers on Monday night 6-1. The Sabers Curtis Lazar and Sam Reinhart both scored twice. The Flyers just simply could not get any semblance of offense going and Flyers goalie Carter Hart was having a tough time stopping shots facing 18-22.

#2 The Carolina Hurricanes got a two goal victory over the Nashville Predators 4-2. The Hurricanes down 2-1 came back in the third period getting goals from Vincent Trocheck, Sebastian Aho, and Nino Niederreiter.

#3 Big night for the Toronto Maple Leafs getting a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets. For Toronto scoring Monday night John Taveras and Mitch Marner who scored twice in the two goal win.

#4 In a back and forth game between the San Jose Sharks and the St Louis Blues the St Louis Blues just escaped going overtime with the scored tied 4-4 and the Blues Jordan Kyrou scored the game winner at 10:28. Final was 5-4 Blues. Same two teams meet again on Wednesday night at the Enterprise Center.

#5 The Columbus Blue Jackets picked up their first win of 2021 with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. The Jackets scorers Oliver Bjorkstrand, Alexandre Texier, and Pierre Luc Dubois.

Sharks Lose 2-1 in OT to Senators

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks fell 2-1 in overtime to the Ottawa Senators Saturday at the SAP Center. Ottawa goals came from Nick Paul and ex-Shark Chris Tierney. Goaltender Craig Anderson made 31 saves for the win. The lone Sharks goal came from Evander Kane, while San Jose goalie Aaron Dell made 36 saves in the loss.

After the game, the Sharks goalie said: “We had only a couple breakdowns. For the most part I think we played a really solid game. And we had a lot of chances, just bounced over our stick a couple of times, just you know some bad luck I think. One of those goes in, it’s a whole different game.”

Sharks defenseman Brent Burns was asked how he felt after getting 31.5 minutes of ice time. He said: “I feel great, I feel good. I think we’re all in the same boat. We all train for the summer to play more than what we ever play so it’s good. I get to eat more tonight now.”

The Senators scored on their ninth shot of the first period, at 10:33. The Senators moved the puck from the blue line, below the goal line, back to the blue line, and behind the net again. Jayce Hawryluk gathered the puck behind the net and Anthony Duclair made a short pass to the front for the net for Nick Paul.

The Sharks had the only power plays in the first period, one at 7:41, one at 17:11 and a third at 19:32. They got three shots on those power plays before finally scoring at the tail end of the period.

Evander Kane tipped a Brent Burns shot but that did not go through. Kane followed up and got his stick on the puck again to pop it into the net. Assists went to Brent Burns and Timo Meier.

The shot count for the period was 16-14 Sharks. San Jose also had a very good period in the face-off circle, winning 65% of the time. Joe Thornton, Evander Kane and Dylan Gambrell shared the bulk of those face-offs, each taking five draws.

In his first NHL game, Nikolai Knyzhov took the Sharks’ first penalty of the game at 4:28 of the second. The Sharks killed that off, allowing just one shot on goal.
The teams traded breakaways in the final few minutes of the second period but both goaltenders were up to the task.

Radim Simek kicked the puck into the net with 24.8 seconds left and the goal was immediately waved off. Simek then went to the other end and swept the puck away from the crease before it could cross the line. Since he closed his glove over the puck, that earned the Senators a penalty shot, taken by Chris Tierney. Dell attempted a poke check, and then Tierney lost control of the puck before he could take the shot.

By the end of the period, the shots were 10-9 Senators.

Both teams had good chances in the middle of the third period, including shots from Couture and Labanc in quick succession, without breaking the 1-1 tie. The Senators pressed hard in the final minute and Dell had to stop a great chance for Colin White in the final 20 seconds to get the game into overtime. The shot count for the period was 13-5 Senators.

Overtime did not last long, ending after just 35 seconds. Christ Tierney scored in a two on one after Anthony Duclair made a pass across the ice, around a sliding Brent Burns. Assists went to Duclair and Chabot.

The Sharks next play against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday at 7:00 PM PT at the SAP Center.

#1 The Philadelphia Flyers got a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night with goals from Ivan Provorov, Michael Raffi, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, and Sean Courtuier. Flyers goalie Carter Hart saved 28 out of 29 shots.

#2 The Ottawa Senators got a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders, the second period was key for Ottawa scoring two goals from Mikkel Boedker and Anthony Duclair as each team scored one goal in each of the other frames making the Ottawa second period the difference

#3 The Nashville Predators Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene scored a goal each in their win over the Dallas Stars 2-0. Preds goalie Juuse Saros stopped 30 of 32 Stars shots for the shutout.

#4 The Chicago Blackhawks got three goals in the third period good enough to get by the visiting Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at the United Center on Thursday night. The Hawks Jonathan Toews scored a goal and Alex DeBrincat, scored twice in that the third period.

#5 Minnesota Wild second period goals from Alex Galchunyuk and Zach Parise turned out to the be the difference as the Wild got a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. The Sharks Joe Thornton score in the third period but the Sharks fell short ending their three game win streak.

#1 Bobby Ryan of the Ottawa Senators coming off a NHL/NHLPA alcohol assistance program since November 20th stepped on the ice and scored a hat trick for the Senators 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

#2  The Winnipeg Jets Connor Hellebuyck picked up his fifth shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over the Washington Capitals. Hellebuyck had his moments standing on his head stopping a Alex Ovechkin twice and a great glove save from the Caps Ilya Kovachuk’s shot in the second period on a power play.

#3 The San Jose Sharks picked up an overtime win against the New Jersey Devils 3-2 when the Sharks team captain Logan Couture scored an overtime goal his first since his return from his injury

#4 The Nashville Predators Mikael Granlund got a game winning goal with just 0.1 of a second left in the game to force overtime against the Calgary Flames. Granlund then scored in the overtime stanza at 1:20 for the game winner.

#5 The Chicago Blackhawks Dominik Kubalik scored a hat trick in the third period during the Hawks five goal rally to come back to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2. The Blackhawks Corey Crawford stopped 37 shots. It was the Bolts fourth loss in a row.

#5 The St Louis Blues got a 1-0 shutout against the Arizona Coyotes as the Blues Ryan O’Reilly scored the games on goal and goaltender Jordan Binnington made 14 saves  for the shutout.
