SAN JOSE–Bay FC hosted the reigning NWSL champions, the Orlando Pride, on Friday night. The Pride haven’t been as dominant as they were last season, but they were still second in the league entering the matchup, behind only the Kansas City Current. The Pride were good enough to get by Bay FC 1-0.

Emmie Allen made her first ever start in goal for Bay FC, against a very dangerous attack that included Barbra Banda and Ally Watt just to name a couple.

Bay FC Starting XI: Allen, Malonson, Hubly, Dahlkemper, Dydasco, Bebar, Pickett, Huff, Oshoala, Kundananji, Lema

Orlando Starting XI: Morehouse, Dyke, Nadaner, Sams, Pickett, Yates, McCutcheon, Marta, Costantino, Banda, Watt

Taylor Huff got the best chance of the opening minutes, as she forced Anna Morehouse to make a diving save in the 10th minute, denying the Bay FC rookie of her long-awaited first-career goal. Ally Watt was taken down by Rachael Kundananji in the 13th minute in a hard collision, which likely could’ve seen the Bay FC forward given a yellow card, but she escaped with just a foul. Asisat Oshoala was getting called for multiple fouls early in the match as well, as a result, she was given a final warning by referee Muhammed Hassan less than half an hour into the game.

Marta nearly got the Pride on the board with a great run into the box in the 26th minute, but her shot went wide of the goal. Karlie Lema was shown a yellow card in the 30th minute when she pulled down a Pride player. Allen made her first save on a shot from point-blank range in the 31st minute. It would remain a deadlock heading into half-time, tied at 0-0.

Banda went down in the 51st minute with an apparent ankle injury after getting tangled up with two Bay FC defenders. After a couple of minutes, she ended up remaining in the game. Caprice Dydasco hit the crossbar in the 57th minute right after a corner kick, nearly giving the home side a go-ahead goal. After the referee called a foul, Orlando played a quick free kick, allowing Banda to get behind the defense, and she scored, making it 1-0.

Bay started bringing pressure late in the second half, getting shots through to Morehouse consistently, but with just 15 minutes remaining, they still trailed by a goal. Morehouse dropped the ball off of a corner in the 78th minute after being bumped by her own defender; however, the shot by Penelope Hocking was blocked, and the follow-up chance by Kundananji went over the goal. Caroline Conti nearly got an equalizer in the 82nd minute, but Morehouse was able to tip it over the bar.

Bay FC brought a lot of fight to the end of the game, but ultimately they weren’t able to get an equalizer and ended up falling to Orlando with a final score of 1-0.

SAN JOSE–Bay FC had a massive hill to climb on Friday night when they hosted the unbeaten Orlando Pride in a crucial game. The night marked the first meeting between two key members of the Zambia national team in the NWSL, as Barbra Banda was facing off against Bay FC’s Rachael Kundananji.

Banda currently finds herself second in the NWSL goal-scoring race with 12, behind only Temwa Chawinga of the Kansas City Current who has an outstanding 15 goals. It also marked the return of Marta to the Bay Area, who previously played for FC Gold Pride that participated in the Women’s Professional Soccer league in the early 2010s.

Bay couldn’t afford to drop points despite their opponent’s dominant play this season, as they had just a three point buffer over Racing Louisville for the final playoff spot entering the night. Bay couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net and Banda would score the match’s only goal for a 1-0 win.

Bay FC Starting XI: Rowland, Dydasco, Menges, Dahlkemper, Malonson, Bailey, Pickett, Boade, Hill, Kundananji, Oshoala

Orlando Starting XI: Moorhouse, Abello, Sams, Dyke, Pickett, Gautrat, Angelina, Marta, Adriana, Banda, Doyle

Asisat Oshoala had the first real attacking opportunity for Bay FC in the third minute, but as she attempted to pass it across the box it went directly to a defender. Bay continued sustaining pressure on Orlando for the next minute straight, getting a couple of more chances they were unable to capitalize on before the Pride attempted to launch a counterattack that was also unsuccessful.

Rachel Hill got her first shot of the night in the eighth minute following a fantastic effort to maintain possession after she nearly lost it inside of the box. Hill found Oshoala behind the defense in the 11th minute, but the shot went directly at Orlando’s goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse.

Bay FC was desperately trying to get out to an early lead, but the Pride were doing a great job of fending them off. Angelina went down in some difficulty for Orlando around the 16th minute, with an apparent leg cramp but remained in the game after some attention from the trainers.

Katelyn Rowland made a massive save in the 20th minute and a follow-up shot was blocked by Caprice Dydasco using her face to prevent a goal. Dorian Bailey was tripped up outside of the box in the 26th minute, which gave Bay FC a dangerous free-kick. After a few passes, Emily Menges slipped while running after the ball, turning over possession to Orlando.

Bay was doing a phenomenal job pressuring and frustrating the Pride in the first half. They were regaining possession by force, which was clearly frustrating Orlando’s top players like Marta. It was generating quite a few chances, even though they weren’t able to finish them off.

It was just a matter of time though. This matchup didn’t feel like an unbeaten team against a team barely in the playoff spot, the intensity and competition level felt like two teams at the top of the table against one another.

Banda was getting a few shots off as the game progressed, but they were often rushed due to strong defending by the home side. Moorhouse made another diving save in the 41st minute to keep it scoreless. Despite Bay generating the most chances, it would all be meaningless if the teams went into halftime scoreless.

Oshoala had another great chance in the 44th minute, but Orlando was able to break up the play and prevent her from getting a quality shot off. Neither team would be able to break the deadlock in stoppage time, and they’d head into the break tied at 0. Officially, the statistics from the first half showed that Orlando had been the better team but the eye test showed differently.

The second half started with Orlando taking over control. While Bay FC were getting a few chances, they weren’t getting near as many or as high-quality of ones as they did in the first half. Banda got her most dangerous chance of the night so far in the 58th minute, but a perfect tackle by Abby Dahlkemper was able to knock the ball out of play for a corner kick.

Albertin Montoya made his first change at the hour mark, bringing in Maddie Moreau for Alyssa Malonson. A collision between Kundananji and Cori Dyke ended with Kundananji accidentally stepping on the back of Dyke’s calf, and she went down in some difficulty before being helped off the field by the training staff. Due to the injury, Orlando was forced to make a substitution bringing on Carrie Lawrence in her place, along with a couple of other substitutions.

Around the 70th minute, Moreau was brought down inside the box for what seemed to be a penalty however the referee ruled it a goal kick and play resumed to the dismay of Bay FC. Moreau was shown a yellow card for a challenge on Marta in the 77th minute.

At that point, Oshoala came out for Penelope Hocking. Dahlkemper saved a goal in the 78th minute when Rowland parried the ball, but it landed right in the middle of the box and the defender was able to clear it out.

Bailey was denied on a point-blank shot that Moorhouse saved with her leg while spinning before she landed on top of it. A phenomenal run by Kundananji in the 83rd minute nearly helped Bay take a late lead, unfortunately, once she passed it to Hill, Hill missed the shot just wide.

Banda got Orlando on the board in the 84th minute, Rowland wasn’t able to stretch out far enough to block the shot and the Pride led 1-0 with minimal time remaining. With stoppage time nearly at its end, Bay FC got one final free kick in the 96th minute. Bailey crossed it in, and Orlando cleared it out.

Orlando would ultimately hold on and maintain their lead until they walked away with a 1-0 victory on the road. It was a game that Bay FC could’ve won, but a few mistakes led to defeat. Importantly though, they proved that they have what it takes to hang with the best team in the NWSL which will certainly build confidence for their playoff push.

Orlando shuts out Bay FC 1-0; Bay FC drops fifth straight match

Bay FC continued their inaugural season with a road trip to Florida to take on the undefeated Orlando Pride and their star players, Barbra Banda and Marta. However, Marta was out of the starting eleven so if she was going to make an appearance it would be as a substitute.

Meanwhile, the visiting team got two key attackers back in this match as both Rachael Kundananji and Asisat Oshoala were available after missing the previous game due to injury. Maya Doms, who was celebrating her 23rd birthday was unavailable due to injury.

If Bay FC was going to end their losing streak, they’d have to overcome one of the most difficult opponents in the NWSL. Despite not being at the very top of the goal-scoring and not conceding the fewest goals in the league, the Pride were top five in both categories which is a big part of the reason they find themselves joint-top of the table alongside the Kansas City Current. The Pride got by 1-0 shutting out Bay at Inter & Co Stadium in Orlando City. It was Bay FC’s fifth straight loss.

Bay FC Starting XI:

Rowland, King, Menges, Sharples, Malonson, Pickett, Boade, Castellanos, Kundananji, Oshoala, Camberos

Orlando Starting XI: Moorhouse, Sams, Rafaelle, Strom, Abello, McCutcheon, Gautrat, Yates, Adriana, Doyle, Banda

The first five minutes were mainly spent in Bay FC’s defensive third and the Pride were getting quite a few scoring opportunities. Alyssa Malonson got booked in the sixth minute for a challenge from behind which would be followed up by Orlando’s first booking on Emily Sams.

Malonson’s yellow card would be very dangerous for Bay, as a defender on a card that early against a team with a very effective attack could easily lead to a second yellow. The first 15 minutes were all Orlando, they were leading in possession, had all the shots, and were thoroughly outplaying Bay FC but the score still didn’t reflect that as it remained a 0-0 tie.

This was a very strange situation for Bay who pride themselves on a possession style of play and to that point, they’d been unable to establish that in this game. When Bay did have the ball though, it was no surprise that

Tess Boade was one of the players most commonly on the ball. She was playing a physical game and had quite a few early collisions leading to free kicks for her team. Bay got their first shot on target of the night in the 23rd minute when Kundananji forced Anna Moorhouse to make the save.

Orlando was bringing heavy offense pressure when Deyna Castellanos fouled Banda inside of the box, giving the Pride a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Adriana took the penalty and scored her first of the season beating Katelyn Rowland low to the left side of the goal.

Over the next few minutes Banda made two similarly dangerous run into the box but Emily Menges broke up the first and Kayla Sharples perfectly defended the second while avoiding fouling her. Scarlett Camberos had a very rough challenge on Kylie Strom but somehow avoided a card despite Strom flipping over her in a dangerous manner.

At the half, Orlando led 1-0 while also controlling possession with 60% and 12 shots on target, 17 shots total. Rowland had played very well for Bay despite the lack of a clean sheet and the defense was doing their best to prevent any high-quality scoring chances despite being stuck in their own box for a big portion of the half.

In the second half, Marta came on for Orlando as did Dydasco for Bay. Oshoala drew a yellow card in the 53rd minute when Rafaelle essentially wrapped around her. Bay started the second half much better, however it was still clear that Orlando was the better team up to that point.

Bay was making progress though, and they were desperately trying to find an equalizer. Bay’s first corner of the night didn’t come until the 61st minute, which was also out of character for them. Castellanos is usually taking corners all night long, but that wasn’t the case this time out.

All Bay needed to do was find a way to score and none of that would matter though, the fact that they had been drastically outplayed on paper would become irrelevant if they could find a way to get a result.

In the 66th minute, Kundananji got a yellow card following appeals from Orlando’s coaching staff following a hard collision with Strom, who did receive some medical attention after the play. Boade and Castellanos would be substituted off after the delay with Joelle Anderson and Dorian Bailey taking their place in an attempt to help maintain possession in midfield.

By the 75th minute, things had evened out a bit with Bay having 43% of the possession at that point. They needed to play with more desperation, however, it also seemed like the Pride were letting off of the gas pedal a bit. Camberos didn’t fully escape a yellow card in the match, picking one up in the 80th minute.

Sharples and Menges certainly had their work cut out for them over the course of the game and it became clear that fatigue was starting to set in, but they were still playing very well. With a final push ahead of them, Princess came on for Camberos in the 88th minute.

Moments later Ally Lemos came on for Banda who had played a great game for Orlando, as you’d expect from her at this point. Savy King would end up coming out late in stoppage time with Maddie Moreau coming into the game for her.

Despite Bay FC’s attempts, they were unable to tie it up and lost 1-0. Although they were statistically outplayed, this game could’ve easily been a 0-0 draw thanks to the defense if it weren’t for the penalty. They’ll look to end their growing losing streak next week at home against San Diego.
