#1 Morris talk about Cal Bears quarterback Jaron Keawe Sagapoulutele threw 20-30 passes for 234 yards for three touchdowns against the Oregon State Beavers in a 34-15 win.

#2 Cal held the lead throughout the entire game which also is a testimony of the good works of their defense.

#1 Morris, just wanted to talk to you about Cal Bears general manager Ron Rivera who joins the Bears after playing and coaching in the NFL for decades.

#2 Rivera said that the Bears are at a point where things could go either way. Rivera wants to move the team forward and that Cal has limited resources. Rivera said that the biggest thing is the investment in the soul of the team and that it’s about the time not the dollars.

#3 Rivera in the NFL had won a Super Bowl as a player and two NFL Coach of the Year awards. This GM job at Cal might be even tougher than his work in the NFL at his former alma mater at Cal.

#4 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox that the guys have put in a lot of work in the off season and through fall camp and now and that it’s time to play. The Bears aren’t perfect yet and expects to be better and better but it’s time to go compete against somebody.

#5 Cal opens up against their old Pac 12 team opponents the Oregon State Beavers at Reser Stadium. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is Cal’s starting quarterback he’ll face the Beavers defense and is hoping to find some open receivers.

#1 Cal Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza had himself quite an afternoon last Sat Oct 26th at Memorial Stadium against the visiting Oregon State Beavers with a career high of 364 yards and two touchdowns in defeating the Beavers 44-7.

#2 Morris this was important morale victory for the Bears who had been on a four game losing streak and wanted to break out and get one back in the win column.

#3 Cal was so far ahead that they even had a 31-0 halftime lead and everything on both sides of the ball were working for Cal.

#4 This was under different circumstances to have a meeting between these two teams as they were both in the Pac 12 that since broke up over the off season with Cal being an ACC team and Oregon State 1 FBS. Taking that in consideration was there any advantage for Cal knowing this Beavers team from playing against every year going into last week’s game?

#1 Morris it was quite an afternoon last Saturday as the NC State Wolfpack edged the Cal Bears at Memorial Stadium 24-23 from your view how close of a game was it for Cal in trying to seal the deal on this one?

#2 The Wolfpack’s CJ Bailey was successful in scoring two touchdowns and getting 306 yards enough offensive yards to get the job done.

#3 First half a close game where Cal had NC State close 13-10. The Bears Jaivian Thomas with an impressive 49 yard run for Cal’s first score of the game making it 7-0 with 13:47 in the first quarter. Second quarter Cal kicker Derek Morris booted a 41 yard field goal at 1:12 and Morris added another three points with a 26 yard field goal seven seconds left to close out the first half Cal in front 13-10.

#4 Third quarter again Morris kicked a field goal at 9:10 and a seven yard carry for a touchdown by Thomas with 24 seconds left in the quarter making it 23-10. In the fourth quarter the Wolfpack got touchdowns from Dacari Collins and Hollywood Smothers that edged out the Bears in the for a 24-23 Wolfpack win.

#5 Next game at Cal this Sat Oct 26 at 1:00pm PT as former co Pac 12 team the Oregon State Beavers come calling. The Beavers lost to UNLV last Saturday 33-25. The Beavers are 4-3 and have lost three of their last five games. STANFORD, Calif. — Senior Spencer Jones is the team’s #1 three point shooter (306) in school history, as he and his Stanford Cardinal (13-14, 8-9 Pac-12) surprisingly fell to the industrious Oregon State Beavers (11-17, 3-14 Pac-12), 85-73, on a warm Saturday Afternoon on the Farm.

The visitors opened the scoring of the game with a Three on the Stanford bench’s side of the court. That 3-0 lead didn’t last too long, as the Cardinal went on a 9-0 run, to put them up by six. During that stint, Stanford hit three treys. Including two by Spencer Jones, which made him the All-Time leader beyond the Arc. Maxime Raynaud hit the third basket.

Jones passed former Cardinal great Chasson Randle with the 305th triple of his career. He added another (306) before recess, and had 11 points at the half. Raynaud added 19 to the Cardinal tally.

However, after the Stanford offensive run, the Beavers performed their own 13-0 run over a 7 1/2 minute timeframe to lead by seven (18-11). OSU led by as much as nine points, and made several more runs, when Stanford tried to tie the game and/or take the lead.

As the first half ended, the Beavers maintained a 6-point lead, 38-32. They were led in scoring by sophomore guard Jordan Pope (17). OSU also outrebounded the home team 22 to 9, and shot 52% from the field, compared to Stanford’s 41% floor shooting.

After intermission, Oregon State scored an immediate five in a row, taking a double-digit lead. They reached the height of 12 points multiple times, and had a 13-0 run in the second half. Despite those exhornant leads, Stanford continued to fight back.

The Cardinal committed a 14-point run on their behalf, not only tying the contest, but actually taking the lead on a Brandon Angel three, putting his squad up 50-47 (12:30) midway through the half. They would go back and forth over the next several minutes of play. At the tune of two lead changes and 3 ties. The first half was 2:2 for ties and lead changes.

With all the action going on inside Maples, the rebounding disparity (39/22) and missed free throws (8) eventually caught up with Stanford. The Beavers shot 53% overall for the game, while the Cardinal settled for 46%.

The Man of the Hour, Spencer Jones, had a troubling second half. He only added 2 points to his halftime total, and fouled out at the 4:25 mark of the game. He verbalized his disappointment of the loss, and will acknowledge the magnitude of his feat later on in the season.

At the final horn, the Beavers had caused major wood damage on the Palo Alto campus, upsetting the Cardinal by 12 points, 85-73.

Three players for Stanford reached the 10+ points plateau: Raynaud (29) & 8 rebounds, Brandon Angel (15) & 6 rebounds, and the aforementioned Spencer Jones (13).

OSU produced four ballers with double-digit scoring. Jordan Pope (30), Tyler Bilodeau (18), Michael Rataj (22) & 10 rebounds, and Dexter Akanno (11) & 7 rebounds.

The Cardinal will next be in action in Salt Lake City, as they take on the Utah Utes, Thursday, February 29 (Leap Day) at 5:30 PM MST on the Pac-12 Network. Oregon State returns to the Beaver State, but in Eugene to battle their fellow inhabitant Oregon Ducks, Wednesday, February 28 at 8 PM PDT.

Bears do it again, and come back to beat Beavers 81-73

California Golden Bears 81 (12-15 Overall; 8-8 Pac-12)

The Bears have done it again, as they came back from down 11 points to beat the Oregon State Beaver, 81-73.

The Bears returned home following another epic win, this time in Seattle against the Washington Huskies. Tonight, they kicked off their final home stand of the season, as they welcomed the Oregon State Beavers to Haas Pavilion.

The Beavers won the opening tip, and turned the ball over, which allowed Keonte Kennedy to put the Bears on the board with a jumper. Jordan Pope hit a three to put Oregon State ahead, and Chol Marial followed that up with a jumper to make it 5-2.

Fardaws Aimaq drew a, and hit both from the line to make it 5-4. Tyler Bilodeau hit a jumper for Oregon State; and then Aimaq was fouled, and hit one of two.

The Beavers then took control throughout the remainder of the first half. Pope hit a jumper, and then hit a free throw after being fouled on the play to open Oregon State’s lead to 21-10 with 11:47 still remaining.

The Bears didn’t fall any further behind, and closed the gap to 29-23 following a jumper by Jaylomn Tyson and a three by Kennedy. However, the Beavers retained control and were very quickly back out to a 34-23 lead.

The Bears kept up the fight, as an Aimaq three made it 38-31 with 2:53 left, and a Tyson three to make it 40-34 with 1:25 left. Dexter Akanno hit a three with 53 seconds left to make it 43-34, and that score would hold going into the half.

Marial drew a foul for the Beavers, and hit both from the line to start the second half, which put Oregon State back up by 11 at 45-34. The Bears were once again down double digits in the second half, and that only meant one thing: It was time for another comeback.

There the Bears went, as they chipped away at the Beavers’ lead with an 8-2 run. Jalen Cone hit a three; Aimaq was fouled, and hit two from the line; and Kennedy sank a three. Suddenly, it was 47-42.

Jordan Pope hit a jumper; was fouled on the play; and hit his shot from the line to make it 50-42, but the Bears didn’t let up, especially Jalen Celestine. Celestine was fouled, and hit two from the line. Then he stole the ball from Akanno on back-to-back Beavers’ possessions, and threw down dunks both times. Now, it was just a two-point game at 50-48 with 15:02 still remaining.

However, as quickly as the Bears got right back into it and made it a two-point game, the Beavers jumped back out to a nine-point lead just as quickly with seven unanswered points. That drive featured a three from Michael Rataj, a layup by KC Ibekwe and a jumper by Pope.

Cone hit a three, and Rataj responded with a jumper to make it 59-51. The Bears were down by eight with 11:51 to go, but that would be no problem at all. Grant Newell hit a three; Aimaq laid one in; and Cone hit a three, as it took the Bears just a minute and 38 seconds to come back and tie it.

The teams remained neck and neck, but a jumper by Pope, and a three by Tyler Bilodeau put the Beavers back up by five at 71-66 with 5:37 to go, but again, no problem for the Bears. Celestine hit a three; and Cone was fouled, and sent to the line, where he hit both shots to tie the game.

Celestine then hit a three to put the Bears ahead, 74-71, with 3:26 to go, and Cal took control from there. Cone hit a three to make it 77-71, and the Beavers’ offense was stymied the rest of the way. The final couple of minutes were fairly quiet, and the Bears won it, 81-73.

Just another comeback win for the Bears, who are back up to .500 in conference play at 8-8, and improve to 12-15 overall. Now, the Oregon Ducks will come into Haas Pavilion Saturday for the final home game of the season. Tipoff will be at 4 p.m.

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 You were there to see it Michael on Sunday as NCAA history was made by Tara VanDerveer becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history with her 1,203 win.

#2 VanDerveer pass coach K better known as Duke and Army coach Mike Krzyzewski for the record. That’s a storied career Krzyzewski held but VanDerveer had been working on this record for awhile and achieved it with a win over the Oregon State Beavers 65-56.

#3 Those in attendance admired VanDerveer’s class after the game thanking the fans, the marching band, and asked the band to stop playing and got on the PA and told the Maples Pavilion crowd that she was overwhelmed.

#4 In Men’s basketball after winning three of their last four games the Cardinal took a tough loss to the USC Trojans 93-79 on Jan 6th. The Cardinal high scorer was Michael Jones who finished with 23 points. Three Cardinal players finished in double figures.

#5 After some 20 days off from live action the Cardinal are back at it again facing the Cal Bears at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Fri Jan 26th. Cal has played some stunning games and won their last game against the Washington State Cougars 81-75 on Saturday. Cal has won three of their last six games. Do you see this Cardinal-Bears match up as a anyone could win game?

Cardinal Outpaced Runnin’ Utes, 79-73, in an Afternoon Conference Battle inside Maples

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (9-7, 4-2 Pac-12) impeded the progress of the Utah Runnin’ Utes (12-5, 3-3 Pac-12) 79-73 on a sunny day in the Bay.

Stanford junior forward Maxime Raynaud was the French Resistance and the NCAA version of the Stifle Tower, as he posted a game high 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks, to propel his squad to a thrilling 3-point victory.  Three other Cardinal hoopers assisted in the huge effort with double-digit tallies: Brandon Angel (16), Michael Jones (15) and Kanaan Carlyle (12).

The game started off with the Runnin’ Utes going up 6-0 on two 3-pointers.  That turned out to be their biggest lead, although they made another 6-0 run in the first half, and actually led  more than 15 of the 20-minute period.  There were five lead changes and five ties, but the home team took the lead for only 33 seconds total, and by two (34-32) on a basket by Raynaud :06  before recess, which was the margin at halftime.

Raynaud paced the Cardinal with 12 points and five rebounds at the midway stanza of the game.  Also the only player on either team in double-figures.  Senior guard Ben Carlson led Utah with 9 points.

The second half started off with a bang for the Cardinal.  Brandon Angel opened up with a three-pointer, instantly increasing the lead to five.  They were able to increase that margin to as high as 12 points in the second 20 minutes.

However, Utah was not going to go down without a fight.  They scratched and clawed at the lead for a great portion of the half, but were not able to get over the hump on the road.

Their best opportunity was with just under four minutes left in the game, and they were at the free throw line with a chance to tie the game with a 1 & 1 scenario.  Utah missed the shot and Stanford converted a crucial 3 by the aforementioned Raynaud.  That was a 5-point turnaround that the Utes could not recover from.

Utah still tried to overcome the odds, despite missing another critical free throw, but Stanford stood tall and sturdy, as their mascot represents, and held on to the lead at the final whistle, 79-73 Cardinal.

Utah had three players in double-figures: Branden Carlson (14), Gabe Madsen (16) and senior guard Deivon Smith messed around and got a Triple-Double (16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds).

The Cardinal will next be in action Thursday, January 18, hosting the Washington State Cougars at 8 PM PDT on the P-12 Network.  Utah returns to Salt Lake City on the same date to host the Oregon State Beavers at 7 PM MDT on ESPNU.

Stanford used big scoring nights from Canaan Carlyle and Brandon Angel, combined with a double-double for Maxime Reynard to earn an 88-84 Pac-12 men’s basketball overtime victory over Oregon State at Corvallis, Ore.

Carlyle led the Cardinal with 22 points and Angel scored 19 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer in OT. Raynaud had 18 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.

Tyler Bilodeau’s jump shot gave the Beavers (9-7 overall, 1-4 Pac-12) a 76-75 lead with 3:28 remaining in overtime. Carlyle then made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game, Angel connected on a 3, and Stanford (8-7 overall, 3-2 Pac-12) maintained the lead over the final 2 minutes and 49 seconds.

Carlyle made his 22 points on 5 of 12 field goals with two 3-pointers and hitting 10 of 16 at the line; he also had six rebounds and six assists. Angel connected on 7 of 9 field goals along with two 3s, Michael Jones drained three from behind the arc and finished with 11 points.

Jordan Pope led the Beavers with 21 points on 8 of 14 field goals, including two 3-pointers. Bilodeau finished with 17 points, and Dexter Akanno added 14 points off the bench. KC Ibekwe contributed 11 points and six boards for OSU.

With the win, the Cardinal took a 77-76 lead in the all-time series. Stanford has won three of its last four games.

Stanford returns home to host Utah on Sunday. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.

Trojans defeat Stanford men 93-79 in LA; 3 USC players score over 20 pts in win

Stanford’s final men’s basketball Pac-12 road trip to Los Angeles ended in a split on Saturday, as the Cardinal fell 93-79 to Southern California at Galen Center.

Isaiah Collier collected a game-high 26 points for USC, followed by Boogie Ellis with 22 points and five rebounds, and Kobe Johnson with 21 points, five steals and five assists. Ellis, Johnson and Joshua Morgan each had five rebounds for the Trojans.

Michael Jones led the Cardinal (7-7 overall, 2-2 Pac-12) with 23 points on 8 of 9 field goal attempts while sinking 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Brandon Angel was next with 18 points, including 3 of 3 behind the arc, along with five rebounds and six assists. Spencer Jones added 12 points and Maxime Reynaud grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Cardinal lost despite shooting 52.7 percent from the field, including 59.1 percent on 3s. When Spencer Jones hit his second 3 of the game, he moved into 11th place on the Pac-12’s all-time 3-point standings, passing former Arizona State guard Rihards Kuksika.

The two teams traded one-basket leads in the opening minutes, but USC (8-7 overall, 2-2 Pac-12) eventually took a 39-35 halftime lead. Spencer Jones scored the Cardinal’s first seven points of the second half – nine of their first 11 – and Stanford later used a 10-0 run to tie the game at 61-61.

USC regained the lead and held it for the remainder of the game,

The Trojans made 47.8 percent from the field (32 of 67) while making 14 of 25 (56 percent) of their 3-point attempts. USC had a 34-31 rebounding edge.

The Cardinal return to action Thursday at Oregon State. Tipoff is at 8 p.m.
