On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris how relieving is it that Cal (6-7) finally got in the win column with defeat over the Washington Huskies (1-9) on Saturday?

#2 The Bears got a six point win over the Huskies 84-78 did the game appear to look a lot closer and was there any point in the game that the Bears had to be concerned about holding onto the lead.

#3 Matt Bradley is still out of the line up with an injury but Cal forward Andre Kelly has helped picking up the slack with leading the Bears in scoring on Saturday with 22.

#4 Grant Anticevich has made a return with four points and five assists. Talk about how he’s looked in his return and how those assists helped out.

#5 Can the Bears keep it going they head to Colorado (8-3) the Buffaloes are 3-0 at home and have won their last game beating a very tough Oregon Ducks  (9-2) team 79-72 last Thursday. The Buffaloes have a game tonight in Utah (4-4) before hosting Cal on Thu Jan 14th.

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal women’s (3-0)  game for Friday night vs. UC Davis (1-0) has been canceled due to coronavirus protocols. Santa Clara County does not allow sports of any kind to be played there until early January.

#2 Stanford women’s head coach Tara VanDerveer’s who is one game away from tying the late former Tennessee Vol’s head coach Pat Summitt’s record for wins could have come Friday. As a result Stanford will play at Cal on Sunday and VanDerveer with a win over Cal could tie Summitt’s record.

#3 The Stanford Cardinal (2-2) in football win over the Washington Huskies (3-1) last Sat Dec 5th was huge it evened the Cardinal win loss record at 2-2  and it was the Cardinal’s second straight win 31-26.

#4 Stanford quarterback Davis Mills threw for 252 yards and one touchdown, running back Austin Jones carried twice for two touchdowns and running back Nathaniel Peat ran for one touchdown in the Stanford victory.

#5 Jerry, the Cardinal close out the season against Oregon State (2-3), the last time these two teams met it was last season as it will be the two clubs first meeting of 2020. The Beavers in their last game lost to the Utah Utes (1-2) in a close game 30-24 and the Beavers upset the Oregon Ducks (3-2) on Nov 27th 41-38 could you see this one being as close as the Big Game was when they edged out Cal by just one point?

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal shocks the NCAA world with huge upset over Oregon

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 This had to be the shock of the NCAA on Saturday as Cal (1-3) a team considered a doormat in the Pac 12 a team no one would consider won their first game against the Pac 12’s best the Oregon Ducks (3-2).

#2 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox certainly relied on his defense after getting that lead in the first half and held onto it. They had Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough scrambling throughout the second half and he simply couldn’t convert  as the Bears shut the Ducks out in the second half.

#3 Morris Shough threw for 231 yards and a touchdown in that second half you can bet the Ducks coaching staff were trying to rearrange their playbook but would you say in the loss to the Oregon State Beavers (2-2) that film revealed a lot of holes that Cal could have learned from?

#4 For Cal quarterback Chase Garbers an evening he won’t forget a touchdown for Cal in each of the first three quarters good enough for the 21-17 win and Cal’s first win of the season. Garbers threw for 183 yards and a touchdown. He got touchdown help from running back Bradrick Shaw, receiver Nicco Remigio and Garbers carried one in himself.

#5 Cal now heads to Pullman to face the Washington State Cougars (1-1) for the final game of the regular season. If the Bears who just lost to the Stanford Cardinal (2-2) on Sat Nov 28th in the Big Game by a blocked field goal had won that game no telling what that would have done for their post season chances after a big win like this against Oregon.

#6 Morris the Cal men’s basketball game wasn’t even close on Sunday night at UCLA the Golden Bears were blown out at Pauley Pavilion 76-56. Cal head coach Mark Fox said that the Bruins were ahead every step of the way.

#7 Makale Foreman was one of two players who did not travel to the Southland on Saturday. Foreman and the unnamed player did eventually make to Pauley Pavilion but didn’t make practice on Saturday and the pre-game walk through. How much did that impact the results of their game against the Bruins.

#8 Fox said that the Bruins shot for 70% and the Cal defense wasn’t where they wanted them to be and the offense didn’t play with authority.

Ducks roll past Cardinal in Pac-12 opener 35-14; Mills out due to positive Covid test

Oregon scored 28 unanswered points over nearly two quarters Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore., as the Ducks rolled over Stanford 35-14 in the Pac-12 football opener for both schools.

The Cardinal (0-1) were without starting quarterback Davis Mills, who was held out of the lineup after testing positive for COVID-19 and, according to the school, having to adhere to pandemic protocols.

Defensive end Trey LaBounty and wide receiver Connor Wedington were also missing from the Stanford lineup on Saturday due to COVID-19 protocols. Wedington tweeted that he tested negative, but was contact traced.

Jack West filled in for Mills and completed 13 of 19 passes for 154 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Austin Jones led the Cardinal rushers with 100 yards on 20 attempts and both Stanford touchdowns. Nathaniel Peat added 93 rushing yards on six carries.

Michael Wilson caught four of West’s passes for 35 yards, while Brycen Tremayne and Simi Fehoko each caught three passes for Stanford.

Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough completed 17 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Shough also carried 11 times for 85 rushing yards and a TD.

CJ Verdell was the top rusher for Oregon, finishing with 105 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Travis Dye ran six times for 78 yards.

Shough’s top targets were Johnny Johnson III and DJ Johnson. Johnny Johnson caught four passes for 60 yards and DJ Johnson snared five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Stanford scored first on Jones’ 4-yard TD run at 4:13 of the first quarter. From there, it was all Oregon (1-0).

The Ducks tied the game at 7-7 with 1:36 left on Verdell’s 10-yard touchdown run. Oregon surged ahead to stay late in the second quarter, when DJ Johnson caught a 5-yard TD pass from Shough.

Rushing touchdowns in the third quarter by Dye (14 yards) and Shough (9 yards) put the Ducks up 28-7. Jones’ 2-yard scoring run cut Stanford’s deficit to 28-14 at 8:27 of the fourth quarter, but Oregon’s Cyrus Habibi-Liko scored on a 4-yard run, extending the Ducks’ lead to 21 points with 4:12 left.

Stanford returns home next Saturday to host Colorado (1-0). Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.

 

Ducks, Pritchard overwhelm Cardinal in regular season finale 80-67

Payton Pritchard poured in a game-high 29 points for Oregon Saturday, as the No. 13-ranked Ducks defeated Stanford 80-67 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene in the Pac-12 regular season men’s basketball finale for both schools.

The Ducks (24-7 overall, 13-5 Pac-12) won the conference title and clinched the No. 1-seed in next week’s conference tournament. Oregon had clinched a share of the Pac-12 title earlier on Saturday when Southern California defeated UCLA. It’s the Ducks’ seventh league championship and third in the last five years.

Oscar da Silva led the Cardinal with 18 points and seven rebounds to go with an assist, a steal and a block. Spencer Davis was 4 of 5 from 3[point range and finished with 15 points. Daejon Davis scored 13 points, dished out seven assists and collected two steals, and Bryce Wills added 10 points.

The Cardinal shot 47.1 percent from the field (24 of 51, 7 of 16 3-point).

Helping out Pritchard was Anthony Mathis with 14 points and Will Richardson with 12. Shakur Juiston pulled down nine rebounds, as Oregon outrebounded the Cardinal 28-20.

The Ducks shot 56.9 percent (29 of 51, 10 of 19 3-point).

Oregon extended its five-point halftime lead to 40-31 early in the second half. A Pritchard 3-pointer sparked a 10-point run as the Ducks built their biggest lead at 57-42

The Cardinal battled back with a seven-point run, cutting Oregon’s lead to 57-49. Pritchard hit another 3, followed by a layup to build the Ducks’ lead to 62-49 with 6:38 to play.

Stanford (20-11, 9-9) plays Bay Area rival California Wednesday in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. Oregon meets the Oregon State-Utah winner in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Record-setting night for Tinkle lifts Beavers past Cardinal 68-65

A record-setting night for Oregon State forward Tres Tinkle sparked the Beavers past Stanford 68-65 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

With the victory, Oregon State (16-13 overall, 6-11 Pac-12) is assured of a winning season, and completed a sweep of the Cardinal (20-10, 9-8) while snapping Stanford’s four-game winning streak.

Tinkle broke the OSU all-time scoring record with a game-high 23 points. He passed Gary Payton, who scored 2,172 points for the Beavers. Tinkle has scored 2,190 points (seventh in Pac-12 history) and has one game left to play.

In addition, Tinkle was 6 of 6 from the free throw line in the final 1:25 as the Beavers held on after rallying from a 30-26 deficit in the final two minutes.

Etan Thompson was next on the Beaver scoring list with 15 and Zach Reichle added 10. Thompson also had five rebounds and five assists, a steal and a block. Kylor Kelley contributed nine points and seven rebounds for the Beavers,

Bryce Wills led a balanced Cardinal attack with 16 points, followed by Oscar da Silva with 14, Tyrell Terry with 13, Daejon Davis with 10 and Jaiden Delaire with nine.

Terry also had 10 rebounds and five assists; Davis had five boards and three steals.

Oregon State shot 43.8 percent from the field (21 of 48, 8 of 20 3-pointers), while the Cardinal finished with a 44.6 shooting percentage (3 of 15 behind the arc).

The Beavers led 34-32 at halftime, and forged a 9-2 run to open the second half.

A Terry jumper put Stanford up 65-64 with 33 seconds to play. Two free throws by Tinkle put Oregon State back ahead at 66-65 with 17.6 left.

The Cardinal called a time out after advancing the ball to midcourt with 3.1 seconds remaining. Isaac White’s 3-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer.

Stanford needs a win at No. 13 Oregon on Saturday to help make its case for an NCAA tournament bid. The Cardinal haven’t played in the Big Dance since 2014.

#1 Morris the Bears (10-13) tallied their lowest point total for 2019-20 with a 60-45 loss in Utah (14-9) and Bears head coach Mark Fox tried to explain how to fix the offense that looked like they recovered in games against Stanford (16-7), OSU (14-9) and Oregon (18-6).

#2 When you look at the miniscule number of only 45 points scored was it a matter of Utah’s ability to shut down all of Cal’s offensive efforts and playbook or Cal just went right back to the former offense they were before the Stanford game?

#3 The Utes Timmy Allen who led Utah with 21 points said after Saturday night’s game that he was stress free, that he could almost do whatever he wanted on offense does that speak to Cal’s lack of stopping Utah’s offense or Allen really was that good to do whatever he wanted with the basketball

#4 The Bears Matt Bradley had only 13 points on Saturday night he at times was well covered and couldn’t take the kind of shots he normally takes

#5 The Bears go back to the drawing board this time they go back to Berkeley and face the Arizona schools first this Thursday against Arizona (16-7) and then against Arizona State (15-8) on Saturday can they get back that old mojo they had before they went to Utah?

#1 Cal (10-9) played a close game against the Oregon Ducks (18-4) on Thursday losing by five points 77-72 Cal gave it their all and could have very well won this game

#2 Cal was coming off a huge win against the Stanford Cardinal (16-4) and then played a very close game against a nationally ranked team like Oregon speaks to the improvement of the team in just a short time after taking a ten point loss in UCLA

#3 Cal also hosted a much improved Oregon State Beavers (13-9) team and beat the Beavers by two points 69-67 in a game where it’s a two point difference it reflects that it’s a all team effort as oppose to relying on one guy

#4 The Cal numbers are improved on offense the Bears had four players finish in double figures against OSU including leading scorer Matt Bradley with 25 points.

#5 The Bears head to Colorado (17-5) to face the Buffaloes on Thursday night the Buffaloes are a tough customer can Cal head coach Mark Fox and the Bears keep it going in this style of basketball

#1 After coming off loses to Cal (10-9) and Oregon State (13-9)  the Cardinal felt the pressure to win and avoid a third straight loss and beat the Oregon Ducks (18-5)

#2 The Cardinal Oscar da Silva led the way for Stanford and scored 27 points one of two players in the Cardinal line up who scored in double figures

#3 Tyrell Terry who scored 12 came in second in scoring although the ball was going to de Silva much of the night the Cardinal did rely on Terry on offense

#4 Oregon always tough in the second half of games got crushed in the second half against Stanford that made all the difference 42-24.

#5 The Cardinal are in Utah (12-9) on Thursday night the Cardinal have lost two of their last three games including a brutal loss to the Cal Bears, Jerry talks about the match up in Utah.

#1 The loss for Stanford (15-4) to Cal (8-10) certainly came at a big surprise as the Bears Paris Austin scored two free throws that clinched it for Cal 52-50.

#2 It was a battle and Stanford heard Cal’s footsteps all game long as Stanford took a 23-21 half time lead into the dressing room

#3 In the second half Cal clipped the Cardinal’s chances in the closing minutes of the game 31-27

#4 Cal had a 17-2 run on Stanford to catch up and although both teams scored a low total it was a cliffhanger all game long

#5 Stanford finds themselves in a very strange place on a two game losing streak coming off loses to USC and then Cal. The Cardinal face the Oregon State Beavers (12-8) they’ll be heavily relying on Oscar da Silva and Daejon Davis for tonight’s game.
