On the Cal football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, in the last two games the Cal Bears (1-4) have convincingly been defeated Sep 25 in Seattle by the Washington Huskies (2-3) 31-24 and Oct 2 by the Washington State Cougars (3-3) 21-6. How much would you allude the loses to a break down in the Cal defense.

#2 In the last game against the Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 25-41, 219 yards, three touchdowns, and was intercepted twice.

#3 The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and Cal could only answer with six points in the first quarter for all their scoring for the night.

#4 Cal quarterback Chase Garbers just couldn’t get anything going on offense going 14-30, 152 yards, and no touchdowns as Cal was shutout in the second, third and fourth quarters.

#5 The Oregon Ducks (4-1) are next for Cal this Sat Oct 16th. The Ducks lost their last game to the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 at Stanford Stadium. The Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown was 14-26, 186 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Cal can’t get any offense going drop third straight to WSU 21-6

It’s tough to lose three straight but it’s tougher to lose on your own home field which the Cal Golden Bears (1-4) did at UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium to the Washington State Cougars (2-3) 21-6.

The Cougars quarterback Jayden De Laura threw for three touchdowns, was 25-41 for 219 yards and was intercepted twice but the defense held their ground and De Laura and the offense just got enough scoring for the win.

On one of the two passes from De Laura to wide out Calvin Jackson Jr who made a one handed catch in the end zone at the corner. This was De Laura’s first game back since suffering a leg injury two weeks ago against the USC Trojans.

The 25 completions out of 41 attempts for De Laura tied his career best in a game and it helped the Cougars pick up their first win at Cal since the 2013 season. “It felt fine to go out there,” de Laura said. “I knew I had to bring some energy and do my part. I just gave the receivers and the running backs the ball and let them make plays.”

Jackson Jr had his way with the Cal defense with six receptions for 53 yards Jackson’s teammate wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling had a pretty decent afternoon himself with four catches for 36 yards and one touchdown.

The Cal offense just sputtered and it was tough especially to lose at home and Bears quarterback Chase Garbers came up empty handed for the afternoon not being able to throw one touchdown, going 14-30 for 152 yards and an interception.

The Bears next opponent the Oregon Ducks (4-1) No.3 next Sat Oct 9 who were just knocked off by the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 will be pumped and ready to go and it’s the last thing the Bears want is to walk into a hornets nest which they can expect at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Garbers says the Bears need to be prepared and they need to find out who they are, “These next two weeks we’re really going to find out who we are as a team, who we are as people. They had our number, they did a great job and they just outplayed us. That happens.”

Stanford Hands Oregon First Loss of the Year 35-24

Saturday afternoon Stanford took on the 4-0 Oregon Ducks. Last week Stanford lost to UCLA 35-24 and the 2-2 Cards were looking to upset the powerhouse Ducks in this game.

Stanford started this game with a 25 yard field goal to take the early lead. They added to their lead in the same quarter with a Tanner McKee pass to Brycen Tremayne for 18 yards and the touchdown. They now led 10-0.

Oregon would come around in the second quarter with their first score; an Anthony Brown 3 yard scamper for the touchdown. Stanford would also score a touchdown in the quarter. An Isaiah Sanders rush for two yards gave the Cards a 17-7 lead going into halftime. Stanford would have to pull out all the stops to stop the number three ranked Ducks.

The Ducks would start the second half with the ball. It would be a three and out on the opening drive of the second half for Oregon and the Stanford defense was keeping pressure on the Duck offense. A turnaround could be sensed in the second possession by Oregon. They began to dominate at the line of scrimmage something they hadn’t shown in the first half. At 8:32 in the third quarter C J Verdell scored on a one yard run making this a 3 point game 17-14.

Oregon began pressuring and pushing Stanford in the third quarter and the Cards were having trouble containing the Ducks. As the third quarter began to wind down Oregon did have a first and goal but could not cross the line and had to settle for a 22 yard field goal to tie up the game. Stanford did a great job keeping Oregon out of the end zone.

Oregon did however take the lead in the fourth quarter. Anthony Brown ran for 5 yards and a touchdown. The Ducks had taken the lead for the first time in this game 24-17.

Stanford’s get up and go got up and went in the second half. It’s hard to believe that Stanford had five false starts in the second half of this game. The Card offense and defense had a real let-down that really had started mid-way in the second quarter. This was when the Ducks really got going.

The Cards had a great drive going in the final two minutes. They had a first and goal with 12 seconds left on the clock. The loss of receiver Brycen Tremayne loomed large in this final drive. On fourth and goal a penalty gave Stanford another shot as the clock ran out. The Cards would tie up this game at 24 and this game went into overtime. The tying touchdown was a McKee pass to Elijah Higgins for two yards.

Oregon won the toss and elected to kick. Stanford scored on their first possession in overtime. McKee would connect with John Humphreys for 14 yards to take the 31-24 lead. The Ducks were not able to score and Stanford had the upset handing the Ducks their first loss of the year.

It was a shocker for the Ducks who had the game well in hand in the fourth quarter. Stanford’s record would improve to 3-2. They will take on Arizona State next Friday in Arizona

#1 Former NFL great and Hall of Famer and current head coach at Jackson State Deion Sanders insists that everyone call him coach that includes media, alumni, fans, and especially his players. Sanders said that doctors, nurses, and other have earned their title and so has he. Sanders even walked out on a media scrum when a reporter who refused to to address him as coach. Is Sanders correct on insisting that he be called coach?

#2 Michelle, how surprising is it that the Ohio State Buckeyes ranked #3 lost to #12 Oregon 35-28. The Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown threw 17 for 35 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks scored for 14 points in each of the second and third quarters and the Buckeyes just couldn’t get any offense going.

#3 For Michigan State Spartans (2-0) no contest on Saturday as they upended Youngstown State Penguins (1-1) 42-14. The Spartans quarterback Payton Thorne was throwing all day the only time he got any rest was when his back up Anthony Russo came in at the end of the game to give him a rest. Thorne was 15 for 21 for 280 yards and had four touchdowns.

#1 Morris, one consolation about the Cal Bears season (8-19) the Pac 12 Tournament will be their last hurrah for the 2020-21 season.

#2 Let’s talk about some of the players who shined and had some good games during the season for Cal we’ll start with the very popular Matt Bradley who finished the season with 18.4 points per game average

#3 The Bears Andre Kelly finished in second in average season scoring with 10.4 not the biggest overall season number but Kelly did help out with some games this season.

#4 For head coach Mark Fox looking past the Pac 12 Tournament he should have a busy off season recruiting.

#5  The Bears are in Vegas on Mar 10th and will face Stanford do you see any outside chance the Bears could make this an interesting game although their long shots for advancing in the Tournament.

Morris on Cal Bears basketball podcast:

#1 Morris, final game of the regular season on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion a frustrating loss to end the season for the Cal Bears (8-19) against a very good Oregon Ducks (16-5) team 74-63. Like you said in your headline the Ducks did harass Cal all night long.

#2 Cal did play hard and were focused but the Ducks dominated both halves and from the beginning you get the sense Cal would have a long night trying to keep up with Oregon.

#3 Although Cal had four players in double figures those figures were low scoring from Ryan Betly (13), Matt Bradley (12), Andre Kelly (12), and Jarred Hyder (10).

#4 The Bears (8-19, 3-17) last place finish in the Pac-12 comes with an alarming distinction: among Power 5 conference schools (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) only Boston College will finish the season with a lower power rating. Boston College at ranked 261 while Cal ranked 246.

#5 Its off to the Pac 12 Tournament for Cal’s next game on March 10th at T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas and Cal gets one more chance to shine how does head coach Mark Fox prepare for this tournament?

#1 Cal (8-18) who suffered another loss their tenth out of their last 11 games this time in close fashion to the visiting Oregon State Beavers (12-11) on Thursday night 59-57.

#2 Michael did you think it would get worse after they lost in Seattle to a struggling Washington Huskies (5-19) team on their last road trip last Saturday?

#3 Cal had a good first half taking the lead at intermission 33-28 they were getting some good defense and the Beavers just couldn’t covert enough to keep up going into the locker room five points down.

#4 In the second half the Beavers outscored Cal by seven and it was Cal who couldn’t keep the defense up and to make matters worse a tough loss on the home floor.

#5 Cal hosts it’s last game of the regular season against the Oregon Ducks (15-5) on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion the Ducks have won seven of their last eight games. The Ducks in their last game against Stanford (14-10) won on Thursday night 71-68 how do you see this last home game for Cal against Oregon on Saturday night.

Ducks win 71-68, despite second-half surge by Cardinal

Chris Duarte’s 24 points topped a balanced Oregon attack on Thursday, as the Ducks held off Stanford 71-68 in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford’s Ziaire Williams had a chance to tie the game with 0.4 seconds remaining, but missed his 3-point attempt.

Oregon took the lead for good at 65-64 on a Duarte 3-pointer, Chandler Lawson’s dunk made it a three-point lead 48 seconds later, and the Ducks sank 4 of 6 at the foul line down the stretch to secure the win.

Williams scored seven points in a 13-4 run that gave Stanford a 56-50 lead with 9:06 left in the second half. In this competitive battle, there were four ties and five lead changes.

Duarte scored 17 of his points in the final 10 minutes. He also had two steals, two blocks and three rebounds while hitting 9 of 16 from the field. LJ Figueroa was next for the Ducks with 13 points and three assists. Figueroa and Duarte each made three 3-pointers.

Eugene Omoruyi scored 10 points, Eric Williams Jr. was next with 10 and Chandler Lawson added nine points for Oregon (15-5 overall, 10-4 Pac-12). Omoruyi pulled down 10 of the Ducks’ 32 rebounds.

Jaiden Delaire was the Cardinal’s top scorer with 15 points, followed by Daejon Davis with 13 points and Spencer Jones with 11 points. Delaire was 7 of 14 on field goals, while Davis and Jones each hit three 3-pointers.

Bryce Wills led Stanford with seven boards, with Delaire, Davis and Jones each grabbing five rebounds.

Oscar da Silva, Stanford’s leading scorer and rebounder, did not play due to an undisclosed injury.

Stanford (14-10 overall, 10-8 Pac-12) lost the game despite outscoring the Ducks 36-30 in the paint and 18-9 off the bench. Oregon outscored the Cardinal 14-8 off turnovers and 12-7 on second-chance points.

The Cardinal shot 53 percent from the field in the second half, 49 percent for the game. Oregon, meanwhile, shot 41.9 percent on field goals and 9 of 13 at the free throw line.

Stanford hosts Oregon State on Saturday for Senior Day with a 3:30 p.m. tipoff at Maples.

#1 Jerry, the Cardinal (14-9) are coming off a tough loss to Washington State (14-10) 85-76 in triple overtime Sat Feb 20th and their last scheduled game against the USC Trojans (19-4) was canceled. The loss to the Cougars a tough one in Pullman.

#2 Normally when you get five players in double figures your chances go up for a win but the Cardinal were outscored and the Cougars defense just held them in check to stay ahead.

#3 The Cougars had come off a win against the Cal Bears the Tuesday before they faced the Cardinal. WSU had four scorers in double figures but key factor was Noah Williams who wound up the lead scorer with 40 points an impressive total in college basketball.

#4 The Cougars defense was able to contain Oscar da Silva who scored only 11 points and Michael O’Connell was the Cardinal lead scorer with 17.

#5 The Oregon Ducks (14-9) are at Stanford tonight. The Ducks got whipped by USC in their last game 72-58 Monday night in Los Angeles. The Cardinal play host and after getting beat by the Cougars their going to be pressing too. Jerry, how do you see this match up tonight.

On the Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 The flight from the state of Washington for the Cal Bears (8-17) was only two hours but it had to feel like eight as Cal got served up another cold dish of rough basketball in their loss to their standings neighbors the Washington Huskies (5-17) in Saturday night’s 62-51 loss at Alaskan Airlines Arena in Seattle.

#2 The loss pretty much assures that Cal will finish in last place in the Pac 12 for this season. The Bears will need a miracle as they have two more games left at home.

#3 The Bears suffered their worse shooting performance of the year 27 percent and lost the game by 31 points. The Huskies turned up the defense and Cal just couldn’t hit their shots.

#4 Quade Green led the Huskies in scoring with 17 points and Jamal Bey followed up with 15 points on an offense that gave Cal fits all night.

#5 The Bears return home on Thursday night to close out their regular season facing Oregon State (8-17). Saturday Feb 27 will be their last game of the season at Haas Pavilion against the Oregon Ducks (14-4) third in the Pac 12.
