#1 Jerry, the New York Yankees Giancarlo Stanton pointed out after Wednesday’s game that he’s seen a lot of teams fold after the opposition gets the lead in ball games but not with this Yankees team as they came back after the Oakland A’s started out with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

#2 Stanton who homered in the game said this Yankee team knows how to push the envelope night in and night out and they do have one of the best offenses in baseball to make that stand up.

#3 Stanton and Aaron Judge who both homered for New York have the best record in MLB for comebacks leading majors with 24.

At issue is their dispute regarding the California Environmental Impact Quality Act regarding non compliance.

#2 The East Bay Alliance wants the A’s to stay at their current site at the Oakland Coliseum saying that the Coliseum meets all the standards of traffic, public transit, freeway access and plenty of room with no jobs to be concerned about getting cut.

#3 A’s team president David Kaval disputes that notion saying that the East Bay Alliance and the plaintiffs lawsuit is absolutely crazy, “We think they should drop the lawsuit. It’s an odd way to use an environmental law to prevent the environmental review from being completed.”

#4 Meanwhile in spring training at Mesa: Former A’s pitcher Sean Manaea started against the A’s on Sunday after being traded to the San Diego Padres for two prospects Infielder Euribiel Angeles No.12 on their system, plus Adrián Martínez, a pitcher and No.26 prospect. Oakland A’s podcast with Charlie O: Montas and Manaea is their stay in Oakland a minute by minute thing?

Hohokahm Park in Mesa AZ the spring training home of the 2022 Oakland A’s as the A’s go through their paces during a steady diet of roster changes seen taking batting practice Wed Mar 16, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie, When you look at A’s pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas that they didn’t get dealt to any of the teams that were pursuing them how much of a reprieve and how relieved for the meantime is manager Mark Kotsay.

#2 There is the tale of the two stories on the futures of Manaea and Montas, Manaea and Montas might stay for now or the other story that the A’s want to deal Manaea first and Montas next. It’s possible that both could be gone by opening day. Either way you look at it they could help the A’s or help another ball club.

#3 Montas in an interview during spring training this week said that he has to perform whether he’s with the A’s or not and focus on what he has to do Montas said he didn’t want to put himself with thoughts of being on the trade block.

#4 Charlie, we didn’t get a chance to get your thoughts on the A’s acquiring Stephen Vogt Thursday. Vogt had such an influence on the A’s clubhouse and had a veteran presence between 2013-17. Manaea remembers Vogt during his rookie year and pitching to him and says he’s excited that he’s back.

#5 Charlie, talk about the shoulder injuries of right fielder Stephen Piscotty who got a cortisone shot to ease the pain and is hoping to get into some Cactus League games just before the regular season starts and pitcher James Kaprielian who is going to start some throwing sessions as he tries to get his shoulder ready. Kaprielian is not expected back until April 5th or later.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Kaval says until a new stadium plan is in place more favorite players will leave

Oakland A’s team president David Kaval (center) addresses the media with Ces Butner, president of the Board of Port Commissioners (left) and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (right) at a news conference back on Nov 28, 2018 regarding the new Howard Terminal park in downtown Oakland. This past week the Seaport Planning Advisory Commission recommended against the new Howard Terminal ballpark in what is considered a major setback for the A’s (AP file photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry let’s ask you about some of what Oakland A’s president David Kaval said concerning why the A’s are unloading some of their key players. Kaval said in order to have a high payroll the A’s have to have a facility that’s on the level of a Camden Yards, Oracle Park, Petco Park. At the Coliseum the A’s can’t make that kind of revenue and once the A’s can get that kind of revenue and new park to play in then they can consider a high payroll.

#2 Kaval said that a lot of the players that were traded away, Matt Olson, Mark Canha, Starling Marte, Matt Chapman, and soon to leave A’s pitcher Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea are being dealt to see if the A’s can pick up a good return on prospects and Kaval said it’s no secret that vice president Billy Beane and general manager David Forst have built this team up like this in the past.

#3 Kaval said the A’s have not had a normal season in three years that has impacted the team financially, In 2020 a 60 game season with no fans, in 2021 a 162 game season with Covid 19 restrictions, and 2022 a lockout to begin the season.

#4 Kaval said in not signing the star players and keeping key players not having a new stadium in place holding back the A’s adding that the Coliseum in antiquated and it’s been ten years since it’s life expectancy and in order to move ahead with keeping a higher payroll a new stadium is needed.

#5 Kaval said on the higher ticket prices and key players leaving that everything in dependent on getting a new stadium and that elected officials and fans understand that raising revenue is all riding on getting a new stadium.

#3 Now the next step is for the city to negotiate the final terms of the new ballpark, affordable housing, retail, public transit to the park and benefits for the neighborhood.

#2 The A’s got great pitching out of starter Sean Manaea went seven innings, five hits, one earned run, a walk, nine strike outs.

#3 Jerry, Manaea had all his pitches working for him on Thursday getting nine strikeouts against a line up as good as the Sox and as good as team like the White Sox that has some pretty smart pitching.

#4 The A’s Josh Harrison got picked off second base in the bottom of the first inning 1-4-5 put out. It’s not often you see a leadoff hitter like Harrison like that.

#5 Jerry, the Texas Rangers might be 30 games out and in last place in the AL West but they are never giving up club they’re won seven out their last ten and have won four straight games going into Friday’s series against the A’s.

Astros and A’s open three game series Tuesday night; Rivalry baseball at it’s best at the Coliseum

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND- The Oakland A’s returned home to the Bay Area after finishing a six-game road trip to Boston and Minnesota. The A’s won four and lost two on the trip. The A’s are in first place in the AL West with a record of 25-17. Their opponent for the next three games will be the Houston Astros (24-17) starting Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

The Astros trail the A’s by 1/2 game in the race for the division crown. The Astros and A’s have met seven times so far in 2021. The Astros won the first five games between the two teams, but the A’s won the last two.

The Astros have a lineup loaded with power hitters. As a team, the Astros have sent 48 balls out of the park in their first 41 games. The A’s are no slouch hitting balls into the stratosphere either. The A’s have played 42 games, and they have hit 53 round-trippers.

The Astros are 8-2 in their last ten games. The lineup features second baseman Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman, Yuli Guriel, Yordan Alvarez, Michael Brantley, and Kyle Turner. Jason Castro and Martin Maldonado share the catching chores. The Astros went to the World Series in 2017 and 2019. They won the championship in 2017. They eliminated the A’s in the 2020 AL Divison Series. A’s manager Bob Melvin has to figure out a way to beat these guys.

Here is a look at the starting pitchers for the series starting Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. Lefty Sean Manaea will go for Oakland. Manaea had a rough outing in Boston last week. The Red Sox roughed him up for seven runs and ten hits in two-plus innings of work.

Manaea will be looking to get back on track against the Astros’ big boppers. Manaea’s last against Houston was on April 9th. He went six innings and allowed one run. Righty Cristian Javier goes for Houston. Javier is 3-1 with an ERA of 3.08.

However, his performances in May have not been that great. In his three starts this month, he has allowed 11 runs in 17 and 1.3rd innings of work for an ERA of 5.71. In his last outing against the Texas Rangers, Javier went seven innings and allowed three runs.

On Wednesday, the veteran righty, Zack Greinke, will face the A’s. Greinke is 3-1 with an ERA of 4.18. In his last start, Greinke went seven innings and allowed three runs. In his three previous starts, the Astros limited him to four innings of work.

The A’s will counter with Frankie Montas. Frankie is 5-2 for the year and has an ERA of 4.93. However, in his last three starts, Montas is 3-0, and his ERA is a respectable 3.12. Frankie beat the Astros in Houston on April 10th. In that game, he went six innings and allowed one run.

In the series finale on Thursday, Luis Garcia will be on the mound for Houston. Garcia had his first career win last week when he beat the Texas Rangers. Garcia is 1-3 for the year and has an ERA of 3.34. The A’s will send lefty Cole Irvin to handle the pitching chores. Irvin is 3-4 for the year and has an ERA of 3.02. In his last start against the Twins last week, Irvin went 6.2/3 innings and allowed one run. His ERA over the last six starts is 1.89.

The series will be a battle for first place in the Western division. The Astros know they will hear many boos from the A’s fans for being caught stealing signs. The Astros complained about the fans being too rough on them. That’s the price they have to pay for cheating.

The A’s pitchers have to be on top of their game to hold down the Houston hitters. The Astros do not have an easy out in the lineup. The A’s have to put runs on the board if they hope to beat the Astros. The A’s have been very successful in winning games by one or two runs. The A’s as a team are hitting about .222. Their hitters can put the ball out of the park, but it would be nice to see them get more hits. The three-game set should be fun.

The teams have finished the first quarter of the season. The Astros and A’s appear to be in the race for the division crown. The Seattle Mariners have rebuilt their team and are not too far behind the A’s and the Astros. The Angels and Rangers have been struggling so far this year. The A’s haven’t played them yet, but they will be seeing them soon.
