Oakland A’s broadcasters Vince Cotroneo, left, and Ken Korach talk in the radio booth before the start of the game against the San Francisco Giants Sunday May 21, 2006 at the Coliseum in Oakland, Calif. This was Cotroneo’s first year with the A’s. (Bay Area News Group, Bob Larson/Staff Archives)
Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:
After 41 years of calling professional baseball Oakland A’s broadcaster Vince Cotroneo is hanging up the microphone. This is my 32nd year calling Major League Baseball.” Cotroneo said, “2024 will be my last year broadcasting for the Athletics.”
Cotroneo joined the A’s after the passing of legendary broadcaster Bill King in 2006. Cotroneo worked minor league games from various locations from 1984-1990. In the 1991 season he got his break with his first Major League job in 1991 broadcasting Houston Astros games until the 1997 season. Cotroneo called Texas Rangers games from 1997 to 2003 and was out of broadcasting in 2004 and 2005.
It was not until 2006 after the passing of Bill King that Cotroneo was hired to be the number two announcer in the A’s radio booth behind lead announcer Ken Korach. Last season (2023) after A’s TV play by play announcer Glen Kuiper who used the N word on live TV and was fired by the A’s Cotroneo stepped in and did a spectacular job as the TV play by play announcer.
For the 2024 season Cotroneo went back to doing radio and the A’s had announced in the off season that they would be moving to Sacramento to play for the interim while their Tropicana ballpark is being built in Las Vegas. With Sutter Health Field being a minor league facility a smaller venue to work in for radio it might have been part of the reason why Cotroneo is leaving.
Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas who locked their doors to the public on Apr 2, 2024. This is a look at the outside of the Tropicana on Fri Apr 5, 2024. This is the hopeful site for the A’s to move to by opening day 2028. Schools over Stadiums are seeking to get the Nevada Court of Appeals to approve legal language for their petition drive to get an initiative on the ballot to stop SB1 the public funding of the Tropicana ballpark. Schools over Stadiums if allowed to go forward will need over 102,000 signatures split amongst four Nevada Districts ready by Jun 1, 2024 to the Nevada State register of voters. On the Oakland podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Jerry, Schools over Stadiums is in the Nevada State of Appeals Court trying to get the language for a petition drive to get an initiative on the state November ballot to stop SB1 public funding for the Tropicana ballpark for the A’s. In appeals court on Wednesday Schools over Stadiums remarks to the court were “John Fisher does not pay his lawyer because he cares about the finer points of constitutional law in Nevada…” and “What this has been about from the beginning is delay, driving up our bills, and keeping this off the ballot.”
#2 NBC reported that Schools over Stadiums also said in court on Wednesday that polling results from Jackson County MO an Emerson Poll that “a majority of Las Vegas voters oppose public money going towards a baseball stadium for the A’s, taxpayers should have the opportunity to vote on where this public money goes.”
#3 Also reported when the A’s president David Kaval turned down the Oakland Coliseum’s five year $97 million offer Kaval said it was above market rate and Oakland Mayor Chief of Staff Leigh Hanson countered saying while the deal was above market rate the city is not receiving parking revenue from the Coliseum, the city gets no cut from concessions from food or beverages and is only getting a small share of the ticket revenue. Kaval then said “this isn’t going to work for us.” Hanson said this isn’t about getting the cheapest deal for you but what is going to work for the city.
#4 Jerry, the national media has been working on this story about Schools over Stadiums being in the Nevada Court of Appeals and there is an indication that if allowed by the court to put the language on the petition drive it could spell trouble for the A’s financing for the Tropicana ballpark could it force John Fisher and David Kaval to possibly return to the table with the City of Oakland or hatch a deal with Sacramento. There could be a legal fight to try and keep the A’s in Oakland that’s a ways down the road right now.
#5 With 76 days left are left on how language on how a ballot initiative will read to stop SB1 the decision will rest in the hands of a seven member Supreme Court. Lawyers from both sides of the argument from the labor union arguing this measure will prevent jobs and have an economic impact on Las Vegas and Nevada. Schools over Stadiums lawyers argued that being the 48th state in education and 49th in class room sizes the $380 million of public money going to a stadium should be going to education and the time is critical to get the petition started.
#6 Jerry deputy executive director of government relations for the NSEA Chris Daly said that time is running out that once the court is to approve the legal language for the ballot initiative that gives Schools over Stadiums just less than 75 days to get these petitions printed and petition gatherers on the ground and start seeking over 102,000 signatures.
The Sydney Opera House looking ballpark is in question as to how Oakland A’s owner John Fisher will finance the park and the people of Las Vegas are losing interest (Wall Street Journal image)
On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Sources are saying the Oakland A’s are no longer accepting comments from fans or the public on what their plans are for financing the Las Vegas Tropicana and other than the artists rendition of the Sydney Opera House ballpark people want to see the blue prints.
#2 Also it was reported that the Las Vegas community, businesses, and casinos who have been approached about becoming minority owners of the A’s have not taken the bite and have expressed no interest in entering a business with the A’s after observing how the stadium project has been handled.
#3 The A’s have tuned off their X comments page so the public cannot write to them with questions and comments as to what is happening with the relocation of the A’s. As of yet the A’s still have not decided where they will play for the 2025-27 seasons and have a scheduled meeting with the Oakland Coliseum Joint Authority on Tue Apr 2.
#4 Jerry with there being no tangible renderings and blue prints to back it up and no financing since the unveiling of the Sydney Opera House style ballpark A’s fans in both Las Vegas and Oakland are trying to find out what the A’s plans are and have not got a response.
#5 Vegas fans and the business community are really getting turned off after a Wall Street Journal article came out with a headline that read “The Oakland A’s have plans for a new home in Vegas. Now they need a plan to get there.” As this drags out and there is no financing things are becoming more doubtful if this will ever get off the ground.
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao with 31 books of documents she presented to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and 30 MLB owners at the MLB All Star Game over the weekend at the Seattle Four Seasons Hotel (@MayorShengThao photo)
On Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Mayor Sheng Thao presented where the deal was between the City of Oakland and the Oakland A’s at the time when A’s owner John Fisher announced a binding deal with Las Vegas. MLB Commissioner gave Thao an hour with other MLB owners at the All Star Game in Seattle. Thao presented documents to the Commissioner and some of the owners showing the A’s were close to getting a deal done at the Oakland waterfront ballpark location.
#2 MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred as well as the other 30 MLB owners documents showing that the City of Oakland was close to making a deal worth well over what the Las Vegas deal was worth and that the City and A’s were just 10% close to getting a deal done.
#3 Thao made it clear to the Manfred and the owners so there was no misunderstanding that the city did have a plan to finance the Howard Terminal ballpark and that document showed what studies and legal avenues were going to be taken to finance and how infrastructure and construction of the ballpark how it all was going to work and it was proposed to the A’s. This presentation by Thao shows the Commissioner and the owners that she is serious about getting a deal done and that the A’s are Oakland’s team.
#4 Manfred who heard it from the fans at the MLB draft at Lumen Field in Seattle (the home of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders) where the draft set up to “Sell the Team” and “Stay in Oakland.” Mayor Thao’s timing also couldn’t have been better to meet with Manfred to present documents showing the City was close to a deal with John Fisher and the A’s.
#5 Oakland A’s fans handed out protest cards asking fans to stand with them chanting “sell the team” during the game. This chant was echoed throughout T Mobile Field during the All Star Game will this protest have any influence on any of the owners to vote no on the A’s Vegas relocation?
From left, lobbyists Alfredo Alonso and John Griffin, Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher, President Dave Kaval and lobbyist Jessica Ferrato inside the Legislature in Carson City on May 31, 2023. (Nevada Independent photo)
On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Jerry the Nevada State Legislature met until midnight last night discussing the SB509 the public funds from the State to fund the possible Tropicana ballpark in Las Vegas. There are residents who voiced their opposition to the ballpark because they feel the A’s might not be the right team for Las Vegas and that maybe expansion or the Tampa Bay Rays might be a better option.
#2 Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has called his second special session to push for the Tropicana ballpark. The bill didn’t get pushed through on Monday night and had been in a second special session for the last two night Tuesday and Wednesday. As of midnight last night nothing has been decided. The Legislature will take a vote tonight on the ballpark bill where the future of the A’s moving to Las Vegas is on the line.
#3 A’s team president David Kaval was put in a spot when asked about the team paying and being obligated to pay the entertainment tax. Kaval was told by assemblyman questioning him that he was answering a direct question when Kaval said the A’s would pay the entertainment tax through profits from the ballpark but would not make a commitment.
#4 The fact that there still is no decision on the A’s Las Vegas ballpark and it’s Thursday does that basically say that Lombardo who wants a budget passed needs to get the ballpark through for this session and the legislature is trying to sell those who are opposed reasons to try and change their minds.
#5 Las Vegas residents who spoke at last night’s session emphasized that 81% of Las Vegas residents polled are against the Oakland A’s moving to Vegas and that John Fisher and David Kaval are not the right people to lead this campaign and that the legislature should vote no on funding the ballpark.
Atlanta Braves’ Ozzie Albies, right, hits a two-run home run in front of Oakland Athletics catcher Carlos Perez, left, during the fifth inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Wed May 31, 2023 (AP News photo)
On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Jerry, after taking the first two games against the NL East Atlanta Braves the Oakland A’s starter James Kaprielian had a great start shutting out the Braves for four inning but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth when the Braves picked up three runs.
#2 Kaprielian pitched 4.2 innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs and striking out four hitters. One thing about Kaprielian it was one of his better starts this season and James was hopeful that he could get that first sweep of the season against Atlanta.
#3 Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies hit his 11th home run of the season off Kaprielian to get the three run inning started. The Braves have an offense Albie provided some punch. Kaprielian’s record falls to 0-6 and is still looking for that first win of the season.
#4 In the bottom of the sixth the A’s Ramon Laureano singled to left to scored Brent Rooker and the A’s ended the shutout by Braves starter Jared Shuster who gave way to the sixth oldest player Jesse Chavez 30 years old who came into relieve. #5 Ken Waldichuk in the top of the seventh pitching for Oakland facing the Braves Ronald Acuna Jr who singled to right and scored Orlando Arcia to put the Braves up by two runs 4-2 for the final.
#6 The A’s getaway after a day off Thursday to Miami to open a three game set with the Marlins on Friday night, Hogan Harris (0-0 ERA 10.13) gets the start for the A’s and Edward Cabrera (3-4 ERA 5.02) goes for the Marlins at LoanDepot Park first pitch at 3:40 pm PT.
Cristain Pache made some great defensive plays for the A’s during his time in the outfield but just couldn’t hit for average and was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wed Mar 29, 2023 for right hand pitcher Billy Sullivan (file photo USA Today)
On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Jerry, how surprised were you at the trade of Cristian Pache who came on the scene as the A’s centerfielder. The A’s had so many big hopes for Pache in center but his hitting suffered so he was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies for right hander Billy Sullivan. How do you see this trade.
#2 Pache was out of minor league options and he was designated for assignment and was exposed to waivers and the Phillies grabbed him. There must have been something that he had going that made the Phillies get him on Wednesday.
#3 The A’s will keep outfielders Brent Rooker and Conner Capel both players have minor league options. Capel hit 13 for 35 and hit .371 in 13 game. Rooker 28, has played in 81 MLB games and has been with three MLB teams.
#4 Carlos Perez will be the A’s back up catch to starting catcher Shea Langeliers. A’s manager Mark Kotsay said that Perez 32 signed a minor league deal last week. Perez knows his way around the A’s system playing for them in 2020 and 2021.
#5 A’s open up the 2023 season against the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels are going with their ace Shotime Shohei Ohtani and he’ll be opposed by the Oakland A’s left hand pitcher Kyle Muller. Jerry tell us how you see this match up tonight at the Coliseum.
Cole Irvin the A’s starter had the best outing of 2022 giving up only three hits and 11 strikeouts against the Miami Miami at the Oakland Coliseum on Wed Aug 24, 2022 (@Athletics photo)
On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Sky Bolt hit sacrifice fly to centerfield to score David McKinnon from third base in the bottom of the tenth for a walk off win 3-2 to defeat the Marlins at the Coliseum. It was a quick 2:40 contest at the Coliseum.
#2 The Oakland A’s ended a no hit bid by the Miami Marlins started by Jesus Luzardo when the A’s Jonah Bride led off the last of the sixth with a smash single to left for the A’s first hit of the game.
#3 It was a bit of pitching duel between Marlins Luzardo and A’s starter Col Irvin.
#4 Chad Piner hit a two run RBI that scored Nick Allen and Shea Langeliers for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
#5 In the top of the ninth the Marlins when Nick Fortes hit a 367 foot shot for his seventh home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
#5 The A’s open a four game series with the New York Yankees Thursday night at the Oakland Coliseum. The Yankees have not announced a starting pitcher and the A’s will start James Kaprielian (3-7, 4.29) a 6:40 pm PDT first pitch.
Oakland A’s team president David Kaval in green shirt said that the lawsuit filed by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association could stop the Howard Terminal project (AP News photo)
On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 Bay Conservation and Development Commission who voted for the Howard Terminal project is now facing a lawsuit brought on by the East Oakland Stadium Alliance and Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, the Harbor Trucking Association and the California Trucking Association the plaintiffs say that the vote by the BCDC was too fast with not enough thought process going into the project.
#2 Pacific Merchant lawyer and vice president Mike Jacob said that the A’s are only interested in doing something fast where the plaintiffs want to do something right.
#3 MLB and David Kaval the A’s team president have made it clear if the A’s don’t get to move to Howard Terminal there headed to Las Vegas and Kaval stated that he has visited several potential sites and said that it’s easy to build in Vegas than in Oakland.
#4 Jerry, with the trades of Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino how much of a setback will it be for Oakland going forward.
#5 For today’s fourth and final contest in Anaheim going for the A’s Paul Blackburn (6-6, 4.15) and for the Angels Janson Junk (1-0, 0.00) a 12:07 pm PDT fist pitch.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred addresses the media at the MLB Draft Day on Sun Jul 17, 2022 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles (AP News photo)
On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:
#1 During the All Star break MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that Oakland A’s owner John Fisher has committed significant dollars trying to get baseball in Oakland. No doubt Fisher has made every effort to stay in Oakland but on the field the team has suffered and whatever the A’s have left might go before this month’s trade deadline.
#2 To give you an idea how the A’s are trying to save money they booked A’s lone All Star representative Paul Blackburn to fly commercial from Houston after last Sunday’s game to Los Angeles for the All Star Game but the Astros said that Blackburn can join their All Star players who were flying charter to LA.
#3 Manfred who speaking at the annual Baseball Writer’s Association of America on Tuesday before the All Star Game saying that the A’s Howard Terminal situation is, “an extraordinary difficult situation with their ballpark request.”
#4 A’s are coming off ending their first half with seven wins in nine games and hope to get some traction in the second half but a key factor is will they hold onto some of their players that have some experience to get those wins like Frankie Montas, Paul Blackburn, Sean Murphy, Chad Pinder, and Ramon Laureano.
#5 The Detroit Tigers come in Thursday for only one day at the Oakland Coliseum to play a doubleheader against the A’s as the front game starts 12:37pm PDT followed by the night cap. No starters have been announced for either game as of Wednesday night.
