Oakland A’s Relocaton podcast with Daniel Dullum: Fisher says he’ll explore ballpark funding with the Las Vegas Community

On the Oakland A’s Relocation podcast:

#1 Oakland A’s owner John Fisher said after Wednesday night’s Coming out party at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas that he’s working with Bally’s and GOPI on the renderings for the Tropicana ballpark instead of just releasing the renderings for the ballpark but also for the planned resort and wants both projects on the renderings

#2 Fisher said it’s going to take time to get the drawings up and measuring the ballpark on nine acres plus how and where the resorts will be designed.

#3 As far as financing for the ballpark the stadium costs will run $1.5 billion and Fisher said he would seek funding from his family and the Las Vegas business community. What makes Fisher think he could go to each Casino owner and business owner in Vegas and put enough money to help pay off the construction cost. He’s basically looking for investors and minority owners.

#4 Fisher was also asked at the Wednesday function where they’ll play for after the 2024 season. Fisher did visit Sutter Health Park in Sacramento and Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City last week saying, “We haven’t made a choice but hope to do soon.”

#5 Fisher did say that Summerlin is a terrific asset and a great place and it’s the Oakland A’s triple A affiliate home of the Aviators. No one from the players association has not said anything yet about it’s members playing in a minor league park but it’s been said the players are not in favor of playing in a minor league park.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 The Tropicana Hotel and Casino the future site of the Las Vegas A’s have reached a five year deal with the Culinary Union 226 which covers 300 employees. The deal may not reach the full five years. The Culinary union is one of the strongest unions in Las Vegas if not the strongest. It was one of the unions who stood behind the State Legislative drive to publicly fund the A’s new ball park.

#2 The A’s are scheduled to break ground April 2025, the construction plans are still being drawn up and insiders say renderings are either partially ready but not completed to present to the public yet. Vegas residents have expressed concerns about more taxes as a result of the A’s new park. Some are not excited about the A’s coming to Sin City.

#3 As of Dec 28 the A’s nor the Tropicana have provided renderings of the ballpark and how A’s owner John Fisher is suppose to pay his share of the $1.1 billion for the ballpark in Vegas and Fisher and the A’s have been pretty hush hush on both issues.

#4 The new contract with the Culinary union allows the union to organize hiring employees to work at the new Tropicana ball park. The workers will be food service, cashiers, cooks, restaurant service, just to name a few positions.

#5 The A’s were going to unveil their renderings at the beginning of this month but that was postponed because of two Nevada State Highway Patrol officers were killed and out of respect for the families the unveiling was postponed.

#6 The A’s, MLB, the Tropicana are also waiting for approval from Federal Aviation Administration, development plans, finalization of bonding, a lease agreement, construction timelines, which should take most of the 2024 calendar to finalize these issues.

#7 Schools over Stadiums and Oakland A’s fans have announced they will host a Fan Fest. Joining the Fan Fest are the Oakland 68s, Oakland Ballers, Oakland Roots, Oakland Soul, Oaklandish, and the Last Dive Bar. Most likely this will be a FanFest to push raising monies for legal funds and a campaign money for the Schools over Stadiums drive to put an initiative on the ballot to stop the use of public funds for the Las Vegas ballpark and put the funds for use for schools for the Nov 2024 election in Nevada. The FanFest is scheduled for Sat Feb 24th at Jack London Square in Oakland.

On the A’s relocation podcast with Daniel:

#1 Former Oakland A’s executive Andy Dolich wrote his own commentary in the Mercury News telling MLB owners to vote no on the A’s move to Las Vegas and keep them in the sixth largest market in Oakland and go back and finish negotiating with the Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and the city of Oakland.

#2 Dolich said that MLB owners would be making a huge mistake if they were to leave the sixth largest TV market for the smallest and that every possible effort should be made to keep the A’s in Oakland where they belong.

#3 Dolich was an A’s executive under the Haas family between 1980-1994. Dolich and the A’s won three American League Championships getting in the World Series in 1989-1990 and won one of those World Series in 1989 against the San Francisco Giants. Dolich says the A’s can win in Oakland and team owner John Fisher just won’t spend the money to do it and the owners should not vote for the relocation.

#4 Dolich said that the A’s attendance is not because the A’s are the worst team in baseball but because it’s self inflicted as a mechanism to turn their customers off and the A’s can point to poor attendance for wanting to get out of Oakland.

#5 Dolich also wrote that he’s in favor of keeping the A’s at the Oakland Coliseum location and build the Coliseum complex to professional sports. Build a state of the art ball park for the A’s, a stadium to lure an NFL team. Have retail, hotels, and restaurants to lure customers that can change the Coliseum, neighborhood and bring more fans to East Oakland.

#6 The problem with all of these scenarios is that A’s owner John Fisher is not selling. If the deal does fall through or the owners do vote no will he go back to the City of Oakland with hat in hand and try all over again to get a ball park built at Howard Terminal?

#7 Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, the Oakland City Council, and the Port of Oakland are holding a press conference on Tue Nov 7 at Oakland City Hall regarding a proposal to keep the A’s in Oakland. Although a deal and a plan is already worked out to relocate the A’s upon the MLB owner vote Nov 14-16th in Arlington. The City of Oakland could use litigation to stop MLB and the Oakland A’s from relocating the team if the City can get a deal to build a Howard Terminal ballpark and show they can produce financing to keep the team in Oakland.

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Oakland City officials have indicated that they are not impressed with the job the Oakland A’s, or the Tropicana at Bally’s in Las Vegas is doing. The A’s have not submitted a design for the ballpark, the A’s have not said whether the park will be domed or have a retractable roof.

#2 The cost of the ballpark is $1.5 billion on a 35 acre lot and the A’s need to present a design by the beginning of January. The MLB owners will be taking a vote in mid November to approve the A’s relocation but must have the renderings in hand before that time.

#3 The issue of where the A’s intend to play between 2025-2027 still has not been decided. They have a lease with the Oakland Coliseum through the 2024 season. The A’s need to submit where they plan to play before submitting the relocation application to the MLB three man committee.

#4 With the lease expiring in 2024 and needing to submit the relocation application by mid November the A’s are still seeking locations where they will play for the remaining three years while the Tropicana is being built. Suggestions have been three minor league parks, Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, Greater Nevada Field in Reno, Las Vegas Park home of the Las Vegas Aviators, and Oracle Park home of the San Francisco Giants. Many think staying at the Oakland Coliseum is the most practical place for the A’s until their new park is built.

#5 A’s team president David Kaval said that the Tropicana location is quintessential, it’s right on the strip, i has people, cars, and eyeballs. Kaval added in many ways the Tropicana has the best location because it’s one of the busiest intersections in the world.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: Nevada voters could vote down public funding for new A’s Vegas ballpark; If MLB owners vote yes Vegas voters could vote no

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 Daniel, in Las Vegas a drive called “Schools over Stadiums” with the Nevada State Education Association as they have filed for a PAC (political action committee). NSEA is committed to stopping the spending of public funds for spending billions for a new ballpark.

#2 An NSEA spokesperson Dawn Etcheverry said that they are using every possible avenue to stop the use of public funds and to pay for a billionaires new ballpark. This is a move by NSEA to give Nevadans “the opportunity to vote to stop this misguided project” said the spokesperson.

#3 Daniel, how effective and helpful is it for those opposed to the A’s moving to Las Vegas to have a vote to stop the Tropicana Park from being built in Vegas and how crucial is it for voters to get this measure on the ballot when considering school funding versus ballpark funding?

#4 To get a ballot measure in favor of SB1 the measure to fund the ballpark 140,777 signatures are needed and 35,195 valid signatures are needed from the four petition districts. A poll during the special session on would Nevadans support a new ballpark via public funding 87% of voters opposed the measure. Can this election sink a new publicly funded Las Vegas ballpark for the A’s?

#5 Also it was mentioned in the Nevada Independent report that Nevadans would prefer to have an expansion team rather than have the A’s who are coming in with hat in hand asking for public money. An expansion team would have an owner paying with private money to build a new stadium without using public funds.

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, just wanted to start the podcast discussing the elephant in the room it’s been weeks since we heard anything from the city of Oakland in their efforts to try and keep the Oakland A’s in Oakland those hopes are fading fast as A’s management in the last few months have been seeking a site for a new Las Vegas ballpark.

#2 Daniel, the average income in Vegas is $35,000 to $51,000 and a much smaller population than the Bay Area that said are the A’s looking at the successes of other sports teams who are in Vegas and they can sell games near capacity or is this just one big roll of the dice for the A’s going to a smaller 40th size TV market and hope to sell out most of their 81 home dates?

#3 The city of Oakland did not get federal financing of $182.9 million back in January from the US Department of Transportation. The City of Oakland’s Transportation manager Fred Kelly said that the city will seek other streams of income to finance the Howard Terminal Ballpark so far nothing.

#4 Daniel, back out on the field the talk of the town is Japanese pitcher Shintaro Fujinami who will bet the start against the Shohei Othani and the Los Angeles Angels on Thu Mar 30th at the Oakland Coliseum. Fujinami was 4-4 with an ERA 4.26 in spring training and he’s expected to be a key starter for the A’s this season.

#5 The A’s will open up their season against the Angels on Thu Mar 30 and have a rare Friday off on the 31st before getting back to the Coliseum on Fri Arp 1st against the Angels. One of the top concerns at the start of this season is how will the hitters and pitchers adjust to the time clock.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: How not having Laureano in the line up will impact A’s

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, Ramon Laureano will have to sit out the first 27 games of the regular season due to a suspension for PED use last season. He was allowed to participate in spring training but when the first day of the regular season arrives he’ll have to sit out.

#2 Laureano is definitely a presence and wields a mighty bat how much of a difference will it make not having him in the line up for the first 27 games of the regular season.

#3 The A’s manager Mark Kotsay was trying to see who was going to be a fit for first base and they had all of March to try and nail that decision down. They were considering Seth Brown, they took a look at Jed Lowrie who actually played shortstop, second base, and third base, Lowrie played 28 innings worth of first base so far in camp.

#4 Other A’s players who own a first baseman’s glove Chad Pinder, Austin Allen, and Stephen Vogt. Most likely Kotsay is hoping to settle on a regular first baseman soon and Lowrie has seen the most action.

#5 Stephen Piscotty the A’s right fielder is making progress trying to come back from the sore shoulder. Piscotty has been playing for the A’s minor league affiliate the Las Vegas Aviators and said he got a triple and told Kotsay everything went well.

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 It’s been a busy month for the Oakland A’s and the first pitch of Cactus League is today as the A’s face the LA Angels. The A’s with the departures of Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, Mark Canaha, Starling Marte, Chris Bassitt, have gone to greener pastures. Where does this leave the A’s.

#2 As far as the A’s brand goes fans should be familiar with the way the team goes about business when they players value goes up it’s time for a fire sale and time to rebuild no secret in what is happening with this year’s A’s team.

#3 Daniel, the A’s are looking to deal pitchers Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea is this more of the cost cutting moves by Oakland or is it a matter of seeing what they can get for two veteran pitchers.

#4 It was predicted by Baseball Prospectus that the A’s will have the second worst record in the majors second to the Baltimore Orioles. The A’s are predicted to finish the 2022 season with a .407 winning percentage just above the Orioles with .381.

#5 Three veteran players could be the only ones returning to the A’s line up as everyone including former A’s manager Bob Melvin have departed, the remaining A’s expected to return are outfielder Stephen Piscotty, infielder Elvis Andrus, and catcher Sean Murphy is a maybe.
